Three of my roommates and I applied for a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom Suite as soon as applications opened (3 weeks ago).
Today they just told us that not only are they sold out of their 4 bedroom 2 bathroom Suites so now we have no room, but they said we can switch to a four bedroom three bathroom which is like $200/$300 more than what we signed our lease for!! They also sent us email today that it was our fault since we “didn’t sign our lease”, even though the people at the front desk told us that we did sign our lease weeks ago.

My roommate and I could barely afford what we applied for and are now told we need to pay an extra $300 a month, not including other fees and utilities.

They also said we can’t cancel our lease and so we are stuck having to pay more than what we can afford even though it’s not our fault they sold out and still sent us the lease.

The people at the front desk told us this has been happening to a lot of people which means management knew about it and didn’t do ANYTHING or even tell us quick enough and now other apartments are also sold out.

It feels like they were happy to send us a lease agreement with the cheapest option knowing that they don’t have availability and now are telling us that we need to pay more and there’s no other options and we can’t break out of the contract.

We can’t afford to pay more than what we applied for.

I've graduated from UIUC and no longer have access to student legal services. I don't have a lawyer and haven't been able to find legal assistance for my security deposit dispute with UGroup.

I've already filed a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General's Office, but the issue is still unresolved.

If anyone is considering organizing a class action lawsuit against UGroup over unfair move-out charges, I'd be happy to share my documentation and evidence.

I know I'm not the only one dealing with this, and I hope we can eventually hold them accountable.
