CUPE 2278 Executive AMA: Questions about the possible strike? Step into our office hours October 7th 1-4pm.

So, you may have heard that the TAs, GAAs, and EIs voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike in their strike vote a few weeks ago. But if this and this are anything to go by, y'all have some questions about the potential strike and what it would mean to you as a student, employee, or member.

Tomorrow, between 1 and 4pm, President Jessica Wolf (u/JessCUPE2278), Component 1 Chair Josh Bradbury (u/JoshCUPE2278), Grievance Officer Keegan Parkhurst (u/KeeganCUPE2278), and Recording Secretary Braedon Pauzé (u/BraedonCUPE2278) will be stopping by to answer your questions.

This thread will be used for tomorrow's AMA, so please Ask Us Anything below.

SOME BACKGROUND

On September 28th, the local announced that over 1500 members voted in the Strike Vote with 95.4% of them voting in favour of a strike. While this provides the local with the authorization to call for job action, it does not necessarily mean that a strike will be occurring.

The pressure exerted by such an emphatic, overwhelming mandate has resulted in our mediation dates with UBC being moved forward to October 7th and October 8th.

What are we negotiating for? Our main bargaining priorities are:

  • Employer-paid healthcare.
  • Setting fair GAA wages.
  • Ending minimum funding clawbacks.
  • Maintaining workload and class sizes.
  • Paid breaks for workers at the Centre for Accessibility.
  • Protections for academic freedom.

These priorities are aimed at maintaining the quality of undergraduate education here at UBC while meaningfully improving the lives of our members.

We're looking forward to talking with you tomorrow.

EDIT: Office hours are officially open! We're looking forward to chatting with y'all 'til 4pm!

EDIT II (4:00 p.m.): Office hours are officially closed! Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by! If you have any further questions reach out to a steward or a member of the executive!

Discussion These boyfriend and girlfriend posts are really annoying

Post image
142 Upvotes

Bro, this is so annoying. Where are the UBC photography posts? None of those are up anymore. No one’s posting those anymore. All I see is this like dating stuff over and over and over and over again. It’s getting a bit annoying. If you need someone to date at this point, man, they should just start a club called UBC Dating Club or something. But the whole point is asking or making these stories on Reddit is not going to lead to you finding your love. The only way you’re going to find it is I don’t know because I don’t have any love in my life either, but it’s definitely not on UBC Reddit, and that is clear.

CHEM 233 Test Vent

Hi everyone, I am very sorry to say this here, but rather just venting at night, I also wanna seek for some advice. I’ve been studying for the whole past week, and I check the answer key today and I approximately get a 40%-50% (Well, if lucky I will get above 50). I don’t know how to recover from this. I did all the practice, come to class regularly and take notes, review it once a week. Two practice midterms I both score above 80s/90s and finish in time. I also had an exam from another class which I finish the practice test with 95 and 100, but turns out I only got 58%. Since first year, every single class I study it’s been like this. I originally thought there’s something wrong with my methods, but I tried a multiple time it just doesn’t work. I don’t know how to get good grades on exam anymore. I’ve been crying since midterm finish and don’t know how to become good at test anymore, maybe never. Any advice is appreciated, thank you very much.

Why is most crime on the endowment lands committed at the aquatic center? It's the only place I see the police with their lights on.

since everyone wants a bf/gf here

my best friend got one and now she completely neglects me and spends all her time with her boyfriend. Please don’t be one of these people it’s heartbreaking seeing someone do this to you

edit: there’s nothing wrong with having a s/o you guys. However removing every person in your life for one singular person is selfish, especially if it is people who have been there for you even before your s/o. Never forget what others have done for you. I’m grateful for having this phase when i was 16 as i know how to balance connections now, and i know how quickly relationships can turn! And trust me when that happens you will definitely need your friends again

Likelihood of 24hr library on campus

What are the logistics of extending hours of a library/multiple libraries to be 24hrs?

I think many other Canadian universities have this and I don't know why we don't, so I feel like I must be missing something

I know ikb is open for a very long time but it's not ALL the time and many students would like to continue working later

Also, I know you can technically be in faculty buildings as long as you want but an open library would be a much better option

Please don’t come to school if you’re sick!

I understand there’s midterms and whatnot, but the amount of people who come to school (whilst coughing up a lung) is insane. Some of us have health issues and can’t afford to get sick. And some of y’all don’t even wear a mask, like, are you intentionally trying to spread your germs?

Would a pet’s death allow for academic concession?

My companion of 19 years has deteriorated significantly and upon visiting the vet today, they recommended euthanizing her to preserve her quality of life and prevent suffering. As such, my family has decided to put her to sleep soon (of course, after planning to pamper her for the foreseeable future).

Even the prospect of this news has impacted me significantly, but especially after the fact, I just know I’m going to be in a terrible mental state. I’ve already cried for a few hours.

I don’t have any major assignments of exams coming up, a few essays here and there, but I’m not sure if I would even be able to attend class in my state of grief.

Do you think this would be reason enough for academic concession on compassionate grounds?

eating and studying on campus

I am a commuter and I am wondering in what study spaces is it appropriate/not appropriate to eat.

I can't focus in busy places like cafes or the nest so I like to find faculty buildings, classrooms and libraries. However when it's super quiet it feels like it is not appropriate to be eating... Are there certain places where it's 100% not allowed?

Possibly put down my old institution's student id on a midterm

I'm freaking out because I'm a transfer student, and so by habit I may have accidentally put down my old institution's student id on my first two midterms this year. I've already emailed the professor and the TAs. Will I be getting a zero? This is so brutal I hope that isn't the case.
