What is a good space-efficient font that's legible at small sizes?

• Upvotes

I'm making some prints of various fanfics for some of my friends for Christmas (I got into bookbinding, and have permission to make these prints). I have no experience in typesetting or imposing, and while I've gotten some okay work done, I noticed that Times New Roman used significantly fewer pages over my favorite font (Atkinson Hyperlegible). It's also about as readable at the 10-11 font size I've been using. I assume this has something to do with kerning?

At any rate, since the stories I am printing are 2-3 standard novels long by word count (between 200k - 300k words) I would like to keep the books manageable sizes. If there are any fonts specifically made to be space efficient and easily readable at small sizes, I would love to hear about them.

After one year, Shuffle got a new house and family at @localtypeco :)

Hi! :)

About one year ago (link to the original post), I launched my very first commercial font, Shuffle.

The idea of building my own type foundry rather than just a single font stuck with me, and after all that time, I'm really excited to finally share Local Type Co.

For its debut, I couldn't go with anything other than revisiting Shuffle. What started as a single release has now evolved into a variable font with 2 axes and 12 static styles, including one that I made available completely free for personal and commercial use.

I've had a blast and learned SO MUCH throughout this process. From developing the typeface to figuring out the technical side of things, building the website, and actually getting everything ready for release, it's been quite a journey.

I'd love to hear what you think, both about the font and the website. Any feedback is genuinely appreciated!

If you'd like to see more of the project:

Building something from the ground up isn't easy, so if you have any questions I can answer, I will be more than happy to do so!

To Smooth or Not to Smooth?

4 Upvotes

What got me curious is that, some aren't using them and other are using it.

Do you enable -webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased or -moz-osx-font-smoothing: grayscale on your websites? Or do you prefer the browser's default font rendering? Curious to hear what other typographers and web designers recommend

Bright Grotesk Geo, a refined take on my original Bright Grotesk

4 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’ve been getting back into type design after quite a long hiatus, and I’d like to share something I’ve been working on.

This is Bright Grotesk Geo, a new interpretation of my original Bright Grotesk. Both are rooted in geometric design, but Geo explores a more refined, upright approach to the letterforms, with subtle adjustments to their proportions, construction, and overall character.

The family includes 8 weights, matching italics, and variable font support. I’ve also put together an interactive specimen page where you can explore the different weights.

You can check it out here:
https://andrew.paglinawan.com/typefaces/bright-grotesk-geo

It’s been really enjoyable getting back into drawing letters again. I’d love to hear your thoughts, particularly on the proportions, spacing, and overall feel of the typeface.
Thanks for taking a look!

Does anyone recognize these typefaces or know similar ones?

I’m working on a book cover about the US’ path to war, and I’m in love with these two typefaces. I think they might work well together.

Ok, one more font release: Alas

Alas is a new take on blackletter, a thousand-year old genre that can still prove refreshing. It mixes refined calligraphic elegance with psychedelic twists, like bottom-heavy letterforms and seemingly liquid swashes. Alas pushes boundaries: of the established type corpus, and of my own skill, in an attempt to make something that feels sincerely new.

I built free web tools for typeface designers

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Introducing galleytype.com, a bunch of web-tools to assist typeface designers in their workflows.

A few days ago I signed up for an online course on typeface design. One of the first exercises is to photograph your letter sketches and work out their vertical metrics (ascender, cap height, x-height, the usual suspects). The course pointed us to a web tool for it. I opened it, and it just... didn’t load.

So, being a designer with a deadline and zero patience, I built my own. Drop in your sketch, drag a few lines onto it, and it tells you every metric in font units. I showed it to my teacher and they graciously added it to the course content! (Yes, I’m still a little smug about it.)

Then I actually started drawing glyphs, and the questions kicked in. How tall is everyone else’s x-height? How much room does an “n” get on each side? How thick are those stems, really? Squinting at Helvetica and guessing wasn’t cutting it, so I built a second tool that opens any font (local ones, and more from Google Fonts and Fontshare) and measures it from the actual letter shapes.

The third tool wasn’t even my idea. My teacher asked if it could make type specimens, and when your teacher asks, you do the homework. Now you can drop in font files and get a specimen page, or A4 sheets ready to print as a PDF.

It all runs in your browser, so your sketches and fonts never get uploaded anywhere. It’s free, it’s a side project, and it definitely has bugs, so hit the feedback button if you find one.

Give it a shot!

Edit: Yes, AI was used to make this.

I made a Cyrillic version of Averia

Post image
0 Upvotes

I made a font. It’s called Splav.

Averia Serif Libre was made by averaging hundreds of fonts. That is where its soft shapes come from. But it has no Cyrillic, and I wanted to use it in Russian.

So I added Cyrillic the same way. I averaged the letters of 18 open serif fonts into one. The Latin, numbers and punctuation are Averia’s own.

Splav has six styles. It is free and open source.

Try it: https://kidpudel.github.io/splav/
Download: https://github.com/KidPudel/splav

This is an early version. If something looks wrong, I’d be glad to hear about it.

I built a variable font that writes itself - Inkwell

This is Pendown. Monoline stroke font, two variable axes: DRAW (0-100) and Weight (wght 100-800).

At DRAW 0 every letter is a dot at the pen’s starting position. As the value rises the pen follows each stroke in writing order. At 100 the letter is complete, which is also the default, so plain text reads normally with no setup.

Every letter is stored as the centre line a pen would follow. Weight only changes how wide that line is. Advance widths stay the same at every DRAW value and every weight, so nothing shifts while text writes itself.

One variable file, 39 masters: 13 pen-progress stops across 3 weights. Interpolation moves points in straight lines, so the stops are what keep the pen tip close to the curve between them.

One CSS value drives the whole thing, no JavaScript:

css

 --d { syntax: "<number>"; inherits: true; initial-value: 100; }
.ink { font-variation-settings: "DRAW" var(--d); animation: write 3s forwards; }
u/keyframes write { from { --d: 0 } to { --d: 100 } }

All letters write together. For one-at-a-time, give each its own delay.

Ligatures drawn in stroke order: <3 :) :( -> <-

Three loading glyphs where DRAW is literally the percentage: ... is three dots appearing in turn; (o) is a progress ring and [==] a progress bar, both with a thin track under the fill.

Limits: all caps (lowercase uses the capitals), A-Z, figures, basic punctuation. ( Can expand it later ).

Built on iPhone using Font Studio (Android, iPad, Mac). The app builds the variable font from the masters. OFL licence.

Is there a way to add custom fractions?

2 Upvotes

I'm using Adobe products at work, and I deal with a lot of text that has non-standard fractions (think 5/32). Is there a way I can make and add fraction symbols to a typeface, so that they look like the standard ½ instead of having to manually turn 1/2 into ½ every time it's a weird fraction?

Dutch Taste (Goût hollandois) font recommendations

3 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I've been looking for fonts similar to the so-called "Dutch Taste" (Goût hollandois) and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

I'm particularly interested in its historical Dutch/Flemish printing aesthetic, especially the old-style serif letterforms and the character of early modern Dutch book typography.

Would love to hear your suggestions. Thanks!

Finished my Böcklin revival: Arny.

Sorry this is heavy on the self-promo. About a year ago I shared some WIP images of my revival project, “Better Böcklin”, and I have never had such a strong response to a font as that one. At least once a week for the next year, I received messages asking for a beta trial.

Today I am happy to announce that Arny is finished, alongside a simplified companion face, Arny Sans.
I’ve written a long blog post on the history of the typeface and my angle on redesigning it, which you can find on my site.
