Small megathread rule change

Hi y'all,

Unrelated to the other stuff going on, I just wanted to quickly call to attention to a megathread rule change. TL;DR at the bottom.

Previously all prof-specific, 'searching for friends', and non-TXST owned housing posts were directed to megathreads. This is no longer the case.

The first two categories were not as useful as I thought they would be going in. The posts did not happen often and, once relegated to the megathread, got no traction (thank you to those who pointed this out). For that reason, they are no longer megathread topics.

Non-TXST owned housing is still a megathread. People often ask the same question (how is x complex) or want to sublease. Both of these are good applications of a megathread.

TL;DR, only off-campus housing is still megathread. Everything else is not.

Winter Intermission Classes

For anyone who is planning on registering for them, have registered in the past, or a freshman like I am, does anyone know where I can find the winter intermission classes offered for this Winter Break? I tried to do advanced search on the plan ahead section, but the “part of term” field doesn’t pop up. Wasn’t sure if you can only view them when it’s your turn to register or if you can look beforehand.

Anything would be helpful!

Anything to do about the spotty WiFi?

My WiFi signal is so consistently bad. It’s to the point where I can barely stay on my class zoom meeting at Alkek without glitching out or having to rejoin the meeting every few moments. I’ve resorted to joining my online evening class at home but I just don’t feel like it’s an optimal environment for me, I’d rather be on campus where I can find a quiet-ish corner and not feel distracted by my home environment.

Decent WiFi feels like a basic amenity that any reasonable university should be offering as part of attending. I could even get on the campus WiFi at my previous university a block away from campus. It seems like it’s been a problem at TXST for a while but my guess is that IT dgaf?? Can anything be done? Anyone have any luck with personal connection amplifiers?

Engineering at Texas State is wild

From the hundreds of micro-projects to the endless homework assignments and dry, unhelpful lectures, engineering at Texas State University has been a huge disappointment.

There are some amazing professors who are genuinely passionate about teaching and care about their students’ success. Unfortunately, the number of professors who struggle to teach, explain concepts, or make difficult material digestible is astounding.
Some professors act as if their class is the only one we’re taking, piling on assignments and deadlines without considering the workload students are already carrying.

Since when is it acceptable to cut an exam short? Since when do we tell students to just “wing it” without providing a proper review?
Professors will literally say things like “plug and chug” or “this is an easy test!” only to hand out five ridiculously difficult problems, each with multiple objectives, and expect everyone to pass with flying colors.

If it takes you three lectures to explain how to solve one problem, how can you reasonably expect students to solve five of them during a single exam?

Then there are professors who can’t be bothered to get up and work through a problem on the board. Others seem to let personal relationships influence how they treat or grade students. Some yell at students, and others have displayed behavior that is downright uncomfortable and inappropriate.
Engineering is supposed to be challenging. We understand that. Nobody expects an engineering degree to be easy. But there’s a difference between challenging students academically and making their education unnecessarily difficult because of poor instruction, unrealistic expectations, or a lack of professionalism.

Being knowledgeable in a subject doesn’t automatically make someone a good teacher. And making a class unnecessarily difficult doesn’t make someone a great professor.

I know I’m not the only engineering student feeling this way. I’m sure many of us are exhausted, frustrated, and questioning whether the amount of stress we’re experiencing is even necessary.

To my fellow engineering students: stay focused, keep pushing, and don’t lose sight of why you started. We’ve made it this far, and we’ll make it through.

This will be over soon, my friends. Keep going.

Can’t register for classes

I just met with my pre-business advisor and was notified I cannot register for any classes since I will have completed all my business pre reqs. Because I need one more class to apply to McCoy, I have to wait until I get in to register for courses, which looks like December. Has anyone been in this situation? I’m scared of not being able to sign up for courses by then due to them being full.

financial aid is being rescinded

Earlier this year, I accepted my financial aid package for Fall 2026 through Spring 2027. Shortly afterward, I received an email stating that I had reached my lifetime student loan limit. I contacted financial aid and was told that I would be fine since I am graduating in Spring 2027. They explained that the notification would only affect me if I needed financial aid for Fall 2027 through Spring 2028.

However, last week I received another email stating that my financial aid had been recalculated and approximately $5,000 would be taken away from my already accepted Spring 2027 aid.
I cannot afford monthly payments on private student loans, and this situation could prevent me from graduating when I am only one semester away.

I am currently enrolled in a healthcare program that requires me to maintain at least a C in my courses. While I meet these requirements, my GPA is not high enough to qualify for many merit-based scholarships.

Has this happened to anyone else? I’m not sure what my options are currently. Is there any way to appeal this decision, restore my original financial aid package, or receive additional assistance so I can graduate in Spring 2027?

Update: I will be doing a 401K Hardship Withdraw more than likely to pay for the final semester. Thank you to everyone for the support and suggestions.

Political Science Major

Major was Pre-business but recently found out I’m horrible at mathematics and it’s been over 8 years since I did algebra so I decided to change majors. The advisor told me I would have to take 4 semesters(2 years) of foreign language. I understand the 2-semester for the 100s courses but idk why I need 20”s courses for PS. Seeing if anyone in the major also have to do that same.

Thanks in advance 🤙🏾

Friend lost item on Redpoint bus

Hey, everyone. If anyone is from Redpoint or picked an item up, my friend lost a small bunny plush that was hanging on her bag. Her high school teacher she loved a lot made it for her on her graduation, and she’s devastated over losing it. I don’t have a photo- but if you found something similar on the private shuttle or see something, please let me know. She’s given up on finding it, but I know she’s really upset and stressed out, and I don’t want to give up hope yet.

It’s a small purple and pink gradient peep bunny keychain. Please, if you use that bus, or have seen it, let me know.

So Thursday there is going to be a football game at 7pm at UFCU, will commuters be allowed to have their cars there at that time? This is my first semester and I haven't been to a game here before so I don't really know how it works for parking.

Masters Regalia

Hi everyone!

I'm graduating from Texas State University this December with my master's (HIM) degree. I'm looking for a cap, gown, and hood for the ceremony. I wanted to see if anyone knows of rental or borrowing options instead of buying a new set. If any previous graduates have a master's regalia set they're willing to lend, rent, or sell at a reasonable price, please let me know!

I'm 5'3", so something suitable for my height would be ideal.

I won't be doing commencement, but I do want to take some photos. Also looking for photographers, ideally in the Austin area if anyone has any recs. Thanks !

Best ways to find a roomate

Hii, I just got accepted into TXST (nursing) and was wondering what are good ways to find a roommate, or even friends in general. I also don’t know when the right time is to find roommates, or dorms since there’s pretty much a year till I start attending. But i’ll take any helpful advice that will help me prepare for my freshman year!

PSA for Parenting students:

Y'all are eligible to register for the spring semester earlier than most everyone else. (As you should!)

You can register on Oct. 21st.
https://onestop.txst.edu/registrar/student-registration/time-tickets/spring.html

Now, as for being recognized as a parenting student in CATSWEB or whatever system it that needs to know that you are a parenting student... you'll have to find that out yaself. I suggest Contacting TXST One Stop to get that situated.

May the odds be in your favor, cuz lawd knows its hard to be a parent and a student at the same time. I could never....
