Learning turkish by myself

Hi there, I've been studying arabic for several years and developed an interest towards learning turkish as well. Are there any textbooks that you would recommend or any other methods. I have already tried learning from apps but from my experience there is no structure and i barely understood anything. For now my goals are to conversate with people and understand their culture. Im open to more tips and tricks from people that have gone through this as well.

"The delights of learning turkish" by Yaşar Esendel Kuzucu. I am using it to structure my studies . Others you can use are yedi iklim & istanbul A1 to C2. I am making a personal 500 verb list, if you interested. Or just check 100 verbs online. Verbs are pretty much a huge thing in turkish. The conjugation isn't complicated like some languages (spanish) or irregular like English. No gender and no articles. I fell in love with turkish back i 2020 and have been only consuming content since then and I would say I understand more than I can speak or write but, yeah that's on me. That's how I learned English, so it's what it is 😂

If you someday in the future you travel to Istanbul, consider enrolling in Dilmer Language School in Taksim. I believe they also offer online classes through every CEFR level.

Interesting! I will look for those textbooks, thanks for sharing. I have heard so many good things about Dilmer. Emailed them a few times and they were very polite.

I think it’s on Amazon and available from several other places.

Not gonna lie..I personally just pirated the PDF of every book mentioned so far, lol. But obviously per the rules I won’t be giving instructions on that.

It’s just in-depth introductions in English followed by Turkish Articles. Either part will have varying length and be shorter/longer. Then following each article is a vocabulary breakdown and a set of exercises.

It’s honestly a B2 book, maybe even C1+. I myself personally am still lacking the Turkish level required to fully appreciate and learn from it.

Oh ok! I just skimmed it while i was working! I will look at it more depth! That’s my level B2/C1.

Thank you for the recommendation! I’m super excited!

It’s hard for me to find materials at my level actually.

Well done, that must’ve been a journey. I’m envious! I hope to reach your level next year. 🥹

It was quite a journey! I love Turkish so much though so i enjoyed it. It’s been a labor of love and honestly it will probably be lifelong to maintain this! But it’s so much fun when you get to this side of it. Deep conversations with Turks , consuming media that isn’t translated. It’s awesome! Keep on keeping on! Feel free to message me to chat about all things Turkish.

I may message you someday in the future; we can have conversations in Turkish when I’ve improved. 🙂

I’m a dizi freak, I love Turkish media too.
Istanbul has stolen my heart and I’m planning to move as soon as I can, it’s my only dream.

Dizi freak you say? Well what are your faves? It’s a mandatory question. I wish i could move to Turkey as well. I just don’t see a path for that right now.

Aside from the books mentioned here, for structure I’d really recommend the ‘Intro to Turkish’ audio course by Language Transfer.

Elon.io is also a really good website. It has a foundational course https://elon.io/learn-turkish/lessons and then CEFR courses https://elon.io/learn-hardcore-turkish/lessons, it definitely covers structure as well.

I totally agree with starting from Language Transfer. 👍🏻

I’d do a simple course in Turkish to get the vocabulary to 1000 word forms or so. Duolingo should work pretty well there.

I’d then switch to comprehensible input with apps like DuoNinja. At the same time I’d slowly learn grammar as well but wouldn’t make this a priority.

When you feel like you’ve plateaued, that’s when it makes sense to go all in with an in-person course, tutors etc.
