"Why The Same Questions?"

The mod team gets questions/comments about this all the time. People will ask - often condescendingly toward the mods - why we allow people to post questions that have been answered. There's a few reasons we let this go:

  • New people have questions that are new to them. This isn't Juilliard, and this isn't a scene from Whiplash) - this is Reddit. There will be new people all the time - often beginners - who have questions that are novel to them. The grand scope of the field of music isn't going to be known to someone just walking in, and they're going to ask a question they feel is unique. If they're chased away, it's just going to be a subreddit with people silently agreeing with each other over circular topics.
  • People suck at using search features. No, this isn't just older folks, or even younger people. By large, people are awful at even finding where the search bar is; and unless it's literally Google, they're terrible at using it in general. ...They're also pretty bad at using Google, but I digress.
  • Even if people can use the search function, they'll often get terminology wrong, which will return poor search results. Think about when you kept Googling something and coming up with nothing, only to realize you used a wrong word, and it would have saved you 2 minutes if you knew that in the first place.

So, for whoever feels r/trumpet is not on their level, there's only so much anyone can do for you. First, nobody owes you anything, so check the sense of entitlement at the door. Second, if you're so great at everything, please feel free to chime int o help people who are asking legitimate questions; or even suggest ways they can make their questions better. People who end conversations by default are either salespeople closing a deal, and/or assholes.

So, blah blah blah, use a search function, don't be mean to one another, etc. Most people will never read this far, and this post will get ignored by 98% of the people here anyway. Have a great day, unless you're a jerk.

Question ❓ Advice on a beginners trumpet for my boyfriends birthday

Hello!!

My boyfriend loves jazz and plays the piano and has mentioned how he’d love to learn how to play the trumpet.

I’d love to get him one for his birthday but I know nothing about them at all. I’m based in Glasgow in the UK and would like buy one second hand or brand new but I don’t know what to look for.

Does anyone have any recommendations of make and model? My budget is up to £200 which I know isn’t a lot but hopefully there will be something.

Thank you in advance :)

Picked this up for £75. Everything was seized and it needed a hell of a clean and service, but all fixed up now after soaking overnight in a bucket of soapy water then scrubbing through everything thoroughly. Loads of crusty black crap came out of it! Previous owner had 3 felt washers on each valve stem (sending the valve alignment way out), valve 2 and 3 switched around, and a tenor horn mouthpiece! Surprisingly there's not a single dent on it, and the lacquer wear around the valves suggests it's been heavily used but taken care of at some point in it's life. Serial # is 710665 which by my reckoning dates it late '70s early '80s (?).

From what I can ascertain from what little info there is online, these were Czechoslovakian, designed by Josef Lidl, used standard Amati valve blocks with quality hand-built tubing, leadpipe and seamless bells. Has some neat features like 1st and 3rd slide triggers, nickel slides, a reverse leadpipe and an unusual bell rim that's folded over the wire further than usual. Feels very solid and well made. The valves are a little finicky but now they're working they feel good, if a little clunky. I think they'll be quite oil-hungry. Compression seems decent enough for a well-used instrument this age.

Haven't had a chance to give it a proper toot, will report back with how it plays.

Anyone know anything about these?

UPDATE: Gave this a blow with my trusty Warburton 3M, and I'm very impressed. This definitely plays like a pro horn, with a bright and focussed sound with a little sizzle when you want it. Good intonation, and easy to dial in with the triggers. Feels like a large bore, needs lots of support up to top end but plays with a nice open tone up there - lots of power on tap. Tone is quite Strad-like, but a little brighter. I really like it. The valves have quite a long travel compared to my other horns, which takes a bit of getting used to but useful for slides/gliss. Pleasantly surprised, and definitely a keeper.

I used to own an Olds Super, and I reckon this plays better than that.

Now to find a suitable case for it.

Question ❓ Stimmzug erstes Ventil

Hallo,

Question ❓ Am I overstretching myself?

I started late in life and I wanted to improve quickly. Been playing now for about 4 years. I'm currently in 2 brass bands on cornet (solo & 2nd), a 3rd brass band on flugelhorn and 2 jazz bands on trumpet and flugelhorn. I don't get many evenings off but I love it.

My concern is, the techniques for each of them are different. Brass band flugel playing is very different to jazz band playing so am I actually harming my progress by doing so much or will the similarities between the instruments help me?

Currently own 2 cornets, 2 flugelhorns, 4 trumpets and a bugle. I haven't told my wife I'd quite like a trombone...

Question ❓ Why do composers do this?

Post image
173 Upvotes

The Bb is literally in the key signature (and the note in the bar before was unrelated - can't remember what it was, off hand, but it wasn't something like an A natural).

10 Internet points to someone who can guess the piece/composer?

Edit: I understand the theory, I just find it annoying that, whilst it's technically correct (albeit the best form of correct), it is unhelpful to the person actually playing the music

Question ❓ Sheet music blurb meaning

This is from a Bass Trumpet part- I don't play the instrument; I'm just studying orchestration.

Any idea what the instruction blurb above straight mute means? For Bass Trumpet.

Question ❓ Adult learner living in apartment

My fiancé would like to learn the trumpet. I am behind him 100%. My only concern, is we live in an apartment. I was thinking of going the way of an electronic trumpet? Is that a thing for a learner? What’s the best way, to help support this new hobby, and surprise him with a gift this Christmas. TIA!

Nothing seems to work.

Hello, I’m a freshman music major in college and I practice constantly. Before I even got into college I sounded great and I was very consistent with my playing. Now that I’m in college it’s very much the opposite, the same exercises that I used in high-school don’t seem to work anymore and my range has gotten extremely worse and my tone is awful (I used to be able to play in the High C to High F range with ease). My lessons teacher recommended exercises but nothing seems to work. I really don’t know what to do and I’m losing motivation especially with seeing regression to my playing.

What are some steps I could take to slowly ease back into improving my playing?

Equipment ⚙️ brightness

i had my solo for state a bit ago and they only really gave one comment which was that the sound was too bright and told me to switch to a 3c. the issue is that i am alr using a 3c and i was wondering if i should switch mouthpieces. also my range is extremely variable per day as some days i can easily hit high c but other days g (just above the staff) is a struggle. i never knew that a 3c was technically harder to hit notes

edit: i did not realize that the judges comment was that bad lol i was not at all like upset i was just confused

Tuning tendencies

I am a horn player but teach high brass, so I don’t know everything about trumpet yet. I am wondering about the tuning tendencies of a Stradivarius Bach 37G, or just Bach trumpets in general.

I make my trumpet players kick on every note that they press 3rd valve down for, but this Stradivarius my student plays on makes her first space Fs sharp. Would it be appropriate to tell her to kick every time she plays an F, or just lower her tongue more?

Edit: thank y’all for the information- like I said I am still learning trumpet, and want my students to be as good as possible. Any links or book recommendations are highly appreciated

Equipment ⚙️ Trumpet Recommendations

This is probably one of those too often asked and ultimately unanswerable questions that absolutely drive me crazy when I see them. So, I apologize to all of you in advance. Mea culpa!

I recently posted about possibly taking up trumpet again as an older person. My immediate plan is to rent a good student trumpet to see if I can still, with a little practice, do anything, and then maybe look into buying a horn.

Which brings me to my question. When I was a young player and asked my teacher about good professional horns he said Bach Stradivarius…so that’s pretty much stuck in my mind as the gold standard.

But I’m wondering, is it really the best/only choice?

As far as trumpet-centric music is concerned, I like classic Jazz, swing, and bop. I’ve actually been listening to some Souza lately because the Ken Burns Jazz documentary reminded me that marches were part of the DNA of jazz…

But other than the more classically oriented exercises in Arban, I don’t see myself tackling a trumpet concerto anytime soon.

What brands/models would you recommend I at least try before making a decision?

P.S., I should also note that I’m not interested in being a screamer. What I loved when I played, and was occasionally complemented on, was a warm, rich, lyrical tone.

I’m pretty sure my student trumpet was an Olds. It was Baltimore County (MD) Public Schools public schools in the lates 70s. I think we were supplied by Menchey Music in PA.

Question ❓ King Super-20 Question

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

Hey guys! I was given this trumpet from the music studio I work at, but I have no clue what I’m working with. It appears to be a King Super-20, but most of the instruments I see when looking for it have a silver bell. If anyone can give me more information on what Ive got ex. year made, quality, value vs cost of restoration, that would be awesome! The valves stick when pressed, but I havent had the chance to test it out (I can play maybe three notes lol) so i’d love to know what I should ask about when I bring it into a repair shop :)

Flute doubler on brass. I usually play low brass so I'm still figuring out this instrument.

This is a 100 dollar horn from amazon. All tuning slides are frozen so i cant fix much regarding intonation.

Restriction and bore size on trumpet

I am currently playing a .460 bore trumpet with Bach 3D mouthpiece. My instrument feels very open and sometimes I feel like I’d like to try some restriction. Does anyone have opinions on how to do that, should I look for a mouthpiece with a tighter bore? Has anyone ever tried inserting a thin wall sleeve into the lead pipe, maybe 1.5 out you guys inch long spring steel that could reduce the bore to maybe .450? What happens if you do?
