Race/Event It's the Kona Race Day thread! Who to watch, how to watch, and all the race day chatter will be here throughout day!

It's almost time! First things first- your options to watch, here they are from Ironman.com.

  • Globally: YouTube (free worldwide — coverage starts 4:30 AM HST, pro men race start is 6:20, pro women ready start is 6:30), ironman.com/proseries, DAZN

  • France: L'Équipe

  • Germany: HR

  • Spain: RTVE Play

  • Latin America & Caribbean: ESPN via Disney+

  • China: iQIYI

  • South Africa: SuperSport

And as always, the IRONMAN Tracker app on your phone / mobile device will be your best bet for live info.

I'm really looking forward to hearing from a great commentary team tomorrow: Carfrae, Ryf, Frodeno, McCloy, Siddall, and Appleton.

Some great race previews below!

From TRI 247:

A formidable field preparing to chase triathlon's most coveted full-distance title though the defending champion Casper Stornes will be missing following his training crash.

And Triathlete.com's pro preview:

Løvseth "came to Kona last year as a World Championship rookie and left with the title" — while Laidlow "owns the Kona bike course record and the fastest time ever over the full distance."

And from Ironman.com:

"with Kona exclusively hosting a reimagined event format with men and women racing together on the same day" — "nearly 3,000 of the most competitive and committed triathletes in the world," because athletes want "to race together, and do that at the beating heart of our sport in Kona, Hawai`i."

"Norway dominated last year's IRONMAN World Championship in 2025, sweeping the podium with Casper Stornes, Gustav Iden and Kristian Blummenfelt" — the hype train is back minus one. Official men's start list (55 pros): M2 Iden, M3 Blummenfelt, M4 Van Riel, M5 Laidlow, M6 Lange ("final appearance racing in Hawai'i"), M7 Schomburg, M8 Thompson, M9 Marquardt, M14 Foley, M20 Hanson, M22 Von Berg, M26 Long, M36 Wurf, M40 Ditlev, M53 Furuya.

Some other great sources for previews race day news:

Who are your favorites? What will you be watching for? The field is stacked and I think this might be one of the most exciting World Championship since the last one, at least.

And of course if you're there, how are you feeling? Ready to race? We'd love to hear about it! And I'm incredibly jealous.

Can I do it? Long Triathlon in upper 50’s

• Upvotes

Oh, boy! Second (late) mid-life crisis and I am feeling the pull toward triathlon addiction again. 18 years ago I started a fitness kick that ended up with me completing a full IM in 2012 (and bunch or other races along the way). Fell out of shape but started walking 2 years ago and am now running a few miles a few times a week. I am enjoying the feeling again and am starting to dream about what is possible. I have a big regret about my IM and would love to pull another off. I expect needing 2 years to work up to it. Knees and body seem good right now, but I am curious if there are some later-life (50+) full IM people who have made a “comeback” type IM journey. Love to hear some experiences. Thanks!

Gear questions Brand new Zone3 wetsuit arrived with deep, compressed creases

Thumbnail

Just received a new Zone3 wetsuit and I'm unsure about the creases. Photos attached.

I know some fold lines from storage and shipping are normal. But around the armpit and shoulder area the neoprene looks properly compressed, with sharp, deep folds and not just light wrinkles.

Context: this is already the replacement for an earlier complaint, so I'd rather not go through a third round if it's not necessary.

Questions:

Is this level of creasing normal for a wetsuit that was shipped folded?

Do creases like this relax on their own after a day or two lying flat or hanging, or do they stay?

Have you had a suit like this, and did it affect fit or durability?

Training questions RPM vs. HR - Which to focus on?

• Upvotes

Hey all! Starting to train for my first triathlon. I feel good about the swimming (lifeguard) and running (marathon) but have zero experience biking. I'm in Week 1 of Base Phase (10 weeks) of training.

I'm familiar with Zone 2 Heart Rate training, but when I try to stay in the suggested RPM range for beginner biking (75-85 RPM), it launches me out of Z2 HR training.

Currently I don't have a great aerobic base - I just got back into training after a long hiatus - but I don't know if I should slow down to around 65 RPM to stay in my HR Zone 2, or if I should struggle a little to get to the suggested RPM. Or alternatively: How do you know what RPM you should be at? Currently my training plan has me doing 30 minute bike rides at Z2 HR.

Any advice is appreciated. If anyone has any informational things they can link to I would love to read it. Thanks!

Training questions Any working moms of multiple little ones training for long distance triathlons ?

Hi all,

I'm hoping to find some fellow moms of several young kids who work and are training for long distance triathlons (70.3 or Ironman). I'd love to hear how you make it work.

A bit about me:

35yo mom to three: a 4.5yo, a 2.5yo and a 5 month old baby. I did my first 70.3 last summer in 5h45 (34:44 swim / 3:01 bike / 1:54 run). I got pregnant two weeks after that race, and I ran my first marathon at 3.5 months pregnant. I'm now about 5 months postpartum and back to 2 swims, 2 bikes and 2 runs a week.

The sleep/nursing situation: I've been breastfeeding non-stop for 4.5 years across the three kids, and I'm exclusively breastfeeding the baby right now. I haven't had a full night of sleep in 4.5 years, and at the moment I'm up several times a night to nurse. My husband is a triathlete too and is incredibly hands-on, so I'm lucky on the support side.

What's coming up: I go back to work in early January, part-time, with Fridays off. That's my long ride day. Saturdays are family days, so it's rest. Sunday is my long run. I have two 70.3s planned for summer 2027 (June and July).

What I'd love advice on:

Nutrition: How do you fuel for long sessions and eat enough day to day while nursing? Any tips on how much you eat, what works before and after long rides and runs, and how to avoid under-fueling when you're exhausted?

Training: How do you structure a week around broken sleep and a work schedule? Do you adjust intensity when you've slept terribly, or just go by feel? What do you cut first when life gets in the way?

Guilt: How do you deal with being gone for a 3-4 hour ride or long run when the kids are little? I know it's good for me, but the guilt still sneaks in, especially when I'm out on a Sunday morning while everyone else is home together.

If you're in the same boat (or were a few years ago), I'd love to hear what you did and what you'd do differently. Even just knowing I'm not the only one doing this would be great!

Thanks 🙏

Can I do it? newbie here! can I do it? as someone whose never been great at endurance sports and hasn’t been super active in years

I’m 25 big bodied gal. I’ve felt a recent draw to complete a triathlon as I want to feel strong in my mind and body. I did all kinds of sports growing up until 18, then fell off and haven’t done much since then. I was never great with endurance, but I love to bike and swim, just not sure about running.

I’m considering the Supertri Chicago, debating between sprint and supersprint, and just if I can do it. Any thoughts, encouragement, recs are welcomed. Also shoutout any Chicago specific clubs or athletes to follow

Swimming Using paddles in swim workouts

I’m an instructor and Masters coach/swimmer. I see a lot of triathletes using hand paddles in their workouts—big ones, too. While paddles have their place, I worry about overuse—like 1000+ yards in an hour’s swim. If a swimmer is not proficient, paddles can amplify anomalies in stroke mechanics and put undo stress on joints. So I’m wondering why, compared to fitness and masters swimmers, triathletes seem so reliant on paddles.

Race/Event Lake Murray Sprint (SC)

I'm considering the Lake Murray Sprint for my first triathlon and was just curious if anyone here has done this race and what your thoughts are on the course/overall experience?

The bike is a little long for a sprint (16 miles) so just curious to see what thoughts anyone has about the course set up

2020 Quintana Roo PRSIX with Ultegra di2 & ZIPP 404 fire crest. Rim break. KOGEL OSPW

Price is $2500. Not having disc breaks is kind of throwing me off to it, but I feel like it’s a solid bike. I haven’t ridden rim breaks in forever and I don’t know if it’s something I’ll even miss
Or notice.

Also don’t know if I’m in love with the color. On a scale of 1-10 how soft is it this pink
Color way?! Let me get your opinions.

Also attached my current race set up. Seka spear with tri bar cockpit. Do you think I should just stick to my current set up? Or is it worth it having a dedicated tri bike? I miss just riding my seka spear as a regular road bike which is a big reason why.

Seka spear. Ultegra di2. Enve 4.5 wheelset. Di2 shifters on the tri bars as well.

Competing in first Ironman next year. Do I use my new Tarmac Sl8 Pro which fit Tri bars cannot be fitted to the one piece Roval bars. Or do I use my 12 year old Cube Agree ( upgraded wheels to carbon) which can have tri bars fitted. Or do I fork out more cash and have some tubular bars fitted to the tarmac. What with the cost of inroman hotels etc…. Looking for cost efficient solution.

Can I do it? My first 70.3 in 10 days, shin splints, and tonight is the deadline and last chance at a full refund

I was supposed to do my first 70.3 in sept, but got cancelled due to the noreaster. They resecheduled to oct 24, and i decided to give it another shot after taking a week off of training.

now my shins are giving me problems, mainly my left one. IT started as super super minor pain at the end of a run a few weeks ago and wasnt really worried about it. but since getting back into training, its gotten worse.

i work retail part time, so im on my feet for 6hrs at a time, and ive started noticing some pain while working as well. yesterday, i went for a run after my shift, and couldnt maintain my mormal pace comfortably because my shin was bothering me.

i saw a PT today who said a stress fracture is unlikely, but basically said that while i could race, it would be slow and miserable, and i could make the injury worse. she suggested some really easy run over the next few days, to see how it feels......

the problem is, tonight is the LAST NIGHT I CAN GET MY FULL 630$ REFUND!!!!!. i dont have a few days to "feel it out"

im genuinely torn. ive spent months preparing for this, had it cancelled, and now this happens 10 days before!!! part of me just wants to drop running until race day, wear supportive shoes everywhere i go, stretch, and hope for the best.

has anyone dealt with something similar? would you just take the refund at this point?

TLDR: first 70.3 got cancelled and rescheduled. now ive got worsening shin pain 10 days out. PT says i could probably race but it might suck and worsen my injury. hav until tonight to get my 630$ back... really dont know what to do.

had another post up, but it got taken down because it was ai lol but i typed it now mods see im not a clanker i just didnt wanna write all that

How do I start? 25 f Complete beginner to fitness signed up for duathlon in February

Hi everyone! I used to be very into fitness until I turned 23. The past two years I have not gone to the gym except one time and I got rhabdomyolisis from it. I used to have pretty good cardio, but I vape. I’m sure it’s worse now since I vape but don’t work out.

I’m planning on quitting the vaping but I would love any advice on training for my upcoming duathlon. It’s 2 mile run 12 mile bike and 2 mile run again. Any advice to train especially after rhabdo, injury prevention, endurance tips, all would be appreciated

Training questions Can't sleep because of post-training body heat. Are cooling mattress recovery system worth it?

Hi guys! I've recently started triathlon training and I've ben running long distances and at time training gets so intense that even after a cooldown session, my body still feels physically switched in. I have been taking care of my nutrition, hydration, scratching, compressions, ice baths, and massgaes, and etcetera, But lately none of that is helping me when I'm having trouble sleeping not because I'm tired but because my body is too warm. My trainer suggested I get a specializwd mattress layer that controls the temperature of my bed, I've looked up some options like eightlseep that has left/right temp control, but upper/lower body have the same temp, and the oval one which has four zones so it can heat or warm upper or lower body separately.

So, experienced triathletes, how do you cool down your body after intense training and which of these mattress cooling systems actually delivers the best recovery results?

Hi! I’m looking into buying my first tri bike after riding a 20 yr old specialized allez for my last bit of racing. This listing just came up and it seems pretty solid. My main worry comes with the sizing. It’s a size L, and I am a 6’ 1.5” male with a 35in inseam. Ai says that I’m right at the verge between L and XL, but I’ve also seen things saying that experienced triathletes will say to size down anyways. Any advice or thoughts on the bike/price?

Training questions How to turn 100m-rep pace into a continuous 1.9k swim?

Hi all,

I'm 5 months postpartum (3rd kid) and building back toward two 70.3s next June and July, with possibly a few smaller races (swimrun, short-distance tri) before then. I'm 35F, 5'3" / 1m59.

Current swim: 2 sessions a week, 2k each, done in 100m blocks. My average is 1:34–1:38/100m.

The problem: I know I can't hold that pace for 1.9k straight. Short rest between 100s is doing a lot of the work.

My question: what's the best way to bridge the gap?

Keep doing 100m reps and just push the pace down?

Progressively lengthen the reps (200s, then 300s, 400s...) while keeping the pace?

Something else (CSS-based sets, descending sets, shorter rest, big continuous swims)?

Constraints: I can only swim 2x/week since I'm also fitting in 2 bike + 2 run sessions, plus three kids and FT job. So I need those two sessions to count.

Thanks, any structure or sample sets welcome!

Race report Ironman 70.3 Versailles - Race report

Post image
93 Upvotes

Like the title says I completed the 70.3 in Versailles last weekend after it had been postponed in the summer.

On Saturday the race briefing was held in the stables, which was a pretty cool venue and the speaker came fully dressed in 17th century french garb, quite the touch.

Sunday morning every triathlete left town to walk 30ish minutes to t1 to prep everything and head to swim start. It was still dark outside but they did a good job with lighting the transition zones.

As soon as the first athletes got in the water we noticed that they were walking the first 100 meters, we had been warned it was shallow but I don’t think people were expecting this. I got in and walked for about 70 before I started swimming because the ground was sharp and hurting my feet. The water was quite cold at 15.5 degrees and visibility was 0 but once we got to the middle of the water you could look over and see the palace and that made it all worth it. I swam (and walked) a PR though I suspect the course to be short, I don’t wear a watch for the swim so wouldn’t know.

T1 was hectic, small area to change and everyone took their time to put on extra clothing for the bike leg as it was quite cold and windy in the morning. It was also about 1km long of walking with your bike. I thoroughly enjoyed the bike leg. It’s a fun course with a couple short punchy climbs, some fast descents and otherwise decent flat riding. the only annoying part is the french love their speedbumps in towns. I took the bike easy as I was here for a good time and didn’t feel like burying myself.

T2 was an equally long walk to get to the run bags area. Once on the run it became apparent that this was indeed a pretty special venue. The palace as a backdrop is amazing and the support in the town was awesome. The surface was very rough at places around the course and you really had to pay attention. I found it to be fine on my asics metaspeeds. The run was the best part for me, it was the first time in a race (this was my 9th) I hadn’t been forced to walk due to gut issues. It was also my first negative split on a run leg of a tri ever so progress is being made.

My time was 5:41
S: 36:30
T1: 13:34
B: 2:45:34
T2: 11:37
R: 1:54:25
