Minneapolis/St. Paul Winter car tips for new MN transplants (pun intended).

Since a lot of people have been moving to MN for safety reasons, I thought I'd give a bit of winter advice: MN uses lots of road salt in the winter to melt ice. Not all other states do this. So if you're moving from a state that doesn't and you brought your car with you, you might want to look into getting a rust-proof undercoating for your car if you are able to.

If you are unable to do that, then you may want to do more frequent car washes that clean the underside of your car.

And for people from states that don't get that much snow/ice in the winter, a winter driving tip: speed and brakes are NOT your friend in the winter. Pressing your brakes hard can lead you into an uncontrolled spin. When possible, increase your estimate of stopping distance to stop signs and stop lights, be light on both the gas and the brakes, and let inertia slow your car down when you don't have to brake.

Community Events Relocating to MN? And/or looking for LGBTQ+ service providers? Here's a great resource!

Hey y'all-- I'm not sure if this has been shared recently but Quorum is the MN LGBTQ+ chamber of commerce and a great way to plug into safe spaces in MN. They've created a relocation page that I think a lot of folks here would find helpful.

https://www.twincitiesquorum.com/Relocation-Guide

Also, buzz around their website, it's a cool org actually doing the good work. They have a big presence at Twin Cities Pride as well, so go day hi!

VENT This state sucks for trans men and I'm tired of pretending

Apparently this state has the highest percentage of trans people per the overall state population in the US. We are also known for our healthcare. Despite these two facts, the healthcare in this state, in my experience, has been poor, specifically in my experience as a trans man.

In the past few months alone, I have had terrible experiences. It should be noted that I am passing and mostly/almost fully stealth.

Outed by a phlebotomist to the people in the clinic's lab and lobby because she felt a need to question (loudly) why I was getting a vaginal swab STD panel done, she seemed confused why a man would get this, even though I had just fucking walked out of HealthPartner's Minneapolis Gender Services wing and she knew this.

Asked if I had a vagina by somebody at Allina, then "oh okay, we just have you as male in our system." Yeah that's because I'm male. My legal sex is male.

Misgendered by a receptionist at Hennepin Healthcare who was correctly calling me he at first then only started throwing theys and shes at me once they saw I had an appointment booked with the Gender & Sexual Health clinic, which wasn't even for anything related to me being trans and I have given Hennepin Healthcare no such information.

Then recently at my primary through Fairview Smiley's my doctor is scrolling through my chart and I read "[my age]F" despite the fact that I legally changed my sex to male years ago and informed them (likely multiple times) to change it in their system.

I started silently freaking out about it and never ended up saying anything to my primary because I've basically developed a trauma response from the repeated strange and bad experiences I've had with healthcare workers the past few months. I'm fed up.

That's just some stuff within the past few months. Don't even get me started on the shitty experiences I've had over the years, like I had when getting a hysterectomy where I was in excruciating pain and denied pain meds and had people treating me that either had no idea I was trans, or straight up just didn't like that I am.

Or getting a surgery last year, completely unrelated to me being trans, and the private surgery center had the wrong legal sex on file, despite me having it changed years ago, likely from a release of information from some other clinic, so this private center then knew I was trans. I tell them they have to change it otherwise it won't bill to my insurance correctly, they tell me they can't because their policy states it has to be based off of "sex at birth," I start freaking out about possibly getting hit with a $20,000 or more surgery bill before my family members have to get involved and we have to make a whole scene in front of everybody in the lobby about the sex marker needing to say male for my insurance. They eventually changed it but I was stressing and ended up having a vasovagal response once they put the IV in.

Even Family Tree asked me for my sex at birth rather than my legal sex so I just fucking lied when I went there for STD testing after the bad experience I had with HealthPartners, didn't want to deal with explaining really basic concepts about changing your legal sex to people that work with trans people every day for a fucking living.

There was also the time before I got top surgery where one surgeon I had a consult with, despite me being very young and having no family history of cancer, insisted on a mammogram before the surgery could be booked. I asked for a referral, did endless research on my own as well. All these places were labeled as women's centers and wanted me to be binder off tits out in a gown in a lobby/waiting room surrounded by a bunch of cis women. You must be fucking joking. Eventually called Family Tree to ask them if they could point me to any place that could do mammograms for trans men in a way that was accessible, and was told straight up, no, we don't know of any such thing, they usually don't require mammograms.
Which means there is just no fucking resources for trans men or male presenting people that genuinely need healthcare such as mammograms or OB/GYN care. I pray to fucking god that the situation has changed or improved regarding that in the past 3 years otherwise people are genuinely going to die. If it's like this here, I don't even want to imagine what it would be like trying to get this kind of care in a different part of the country.

This has woken me up and I'm genuinely scared that one day I could have a heart attack or go into a coma or something could happen to me and my life could be in the hands of literally anybody who just decides that my life isn't worth as much as theirs because of something they read in my medical chart.

I was born and raised here. I'm tired of people acting like this place is some kind of mega woke LGBTQ+ safe haven. I've had problems with a majority of the major providing clinics of gender affirming care in the twin cities. Not only is the state of healthcare shit for trans men but the social situation and community is scarce and the social environment and stigma has got to be a driving force behind why we don't have these resources. I'm tired of being treated like a fucking unicorn or alien from outer space. I deserve the same things that everybody else deserves. I deserve to feel safe going to the doctor. I'm now avoiding healthcare all together because something happens every time I go to the doctor atp. I have a therapist but it doesnt fucking matter when the fears you have aren't irrational ones and you're just avoiding walking into the lion's den. I just want this city to fucking change

Minneapolis/St. Paul Laser with PMAP/Medical Assistance

Hi all, I am currently in the process of trying to get bottom surgery done thru the University of Minnesota Gender & Sex Clinic. I have a consultation, and I know my insurance covers it, but you need laser hair removal down there before so. I was told Fairview doesn't have a laser tech anymore, one of the other numbers didn't have one anymore either, the other didn't accept my insurance, and I haven't gotten a call back from the last one. Does anyone know the best thing to do ? I really need bottom surgery, my bottom dysphoria is so bad, and I'm so scared if I don't get this done soon, I'll be denied bottom surgery, and IDK, I feel like it'll fall apart.

HRT low-dose T?

hi all~ i recently was prescribed low-dose T for androgynous results (shoutout north memorial, it was a breeze) but i am having a real hard time actually getting my hands on the stuff. i was told that a lot of places don’t carry the 100mg/mL variety and they aren’t able to look up where in my area carries it (and i don’t feel like calling every pharmacy in town). they switched me to 200mg/mL with a proportionally lower dose to hopefully have an easier time getting it but now i’m running into insurance issues. a bunch of pharmacies just keep cancelling my orders without any communication or reason given. anyone have info on which pharmacies (preferably in Minneapolis but idc at this point) carry 100mg/mL depo-testosterone?
(edited cuz i got dosage wrong bc im dumb :P)

Greater Minnesota MN 2026 Elections

I'm a recent transplant to MN, and was planning on voting today, but I was struck by the lack of information available about all the open court positions? There are almost 30 seats up for election across state and federal courts, each with no formal opposition on the ballot, and nearly no information available on their past decisions or inclinations. Adding to that, according to an article on twincities.com which was in a footnote on one state supreme court candidate's site,

Minnesota Code of Judicial Standards bars judicial candidates from telling you where they stand on issues like abortion, gun control, legalizing marijuana and other current topics.

How can you be expected to make an informed decision? I've tried to search some of those aggregator sites like isidewith or bluevoterguide out of curiosity, but they also just list the candidates with no commentary.

I don't want to just bubble in the default/incumbent, because I might be helping to entrench someone horrible.

Minneapolis/St. Paul Anyone have a physical therapist they love?

I am a former (and currently lapsed) lifter & runner due to a disease I like to call "fucked body", where I have reoccurring ankle and knee and wrist and hip issues for no discernible reason. I am finally in a position where I can see a physical therapist and ask things like "is it normal for it to do that?" and attempt to unfuck my fucked body disease. Does anyone have a physical therapist they love? They don't need to be trans or explicitly do trans-focused physical therapy, I'm just looking for someone who can be normal about me being trans so we can focus on the issue at hand.

Minneapolis/St. Paul Affirmative PCP or electrolysis in Anoka County?

We've only been here a year and I need to find my daughter a new PCP / gender affirming doctor already.

Dr. Cruz is no longer at Allina Health in Blaine and if a letter was sent, we missed it. My daughter loved Dr. Cruz so is pretty gutted right now. She has enough meds to give us some time at least.

I have access to provider lists but I will have to bump them against the maps so I thought I might ask in a post first because personal recommendations are always great. I have BCBS so most doctors are usually covered, I'm not locked into Allina. She prefers female or transgender doctors. She also does not drive and public transit in our area is awful, so I will be taking her for the most part.

Any gender affirming primary care doctors in the Andover / Coon Rapids / Blaine area you can recommend? Or maybe a bit further south? I don't really want to drive all the way into Minneapolis unless I have to, or if her care there will be that much better to justify it. Or anything that isn't too far off the bus routes from Anoka County (since they killed the Northstar).

Also on the lookout for great clinics for facial and body electrolysis in Anoka County that take BCBS. She has very light red hair so I don't think laser will cut it. I saw some earlier threads about electrolysis so I'll be reviewing those, but also appreciate recommendations, especially since I've read some clinics may not be as friendly as others.

Greater Minnesota I told someone and I feel so much better

I told my sister who I knew would be supportive and it still took a lot of courage to push myself to say it I'm glad I could just text her (unfortunately she lives out of state with her dad's family) I don't think I could have told her with words I was actually getting choked up crying just typing it out and then it took me a couple of days just to hit send I love my sister and sometimes I don't feel like the older siblings

VENT How do you work up the courage

I don't think my family is homophobic (not the ones who matter anyway) and I'm still not even sure if I can say I'm trans (I'm currently questioning my gender and when I think about it it goes all the way back to my childhood) but even the people I know 100% that I trust I just can't come out to them I'm scared I think idk

Community Events Bar nights/good hangs?

My husband and I (T4T) will be in the Cities for the month of Octoby for an artist residency. It'd be great to meet people while we're there! Any good bar nights/reading series/brunch spots/play parties/whatever we should go to?

If there are spots that are more trans woman-specific I am also curious about those for myself!

Community Resources Primary care physicians and HRT?

Hi! So long story short is I recently moved up here and have a job with an incredible and open health insurance plan. (Also the company is trans/queer friendly and hiring if you’re looking)

Anyway I’m looking for recommendations on doctors and clinics, or better yet doctors and clinics to avoid. I’ve looked at this resource many times https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-1Z7KYtcjrxwvMOy3Luwt6ICnCpt5sgNTrYGPZtW_yk/edit?usp=drivesdk and have an idea but personal anecdotes always help.

Minneapolis/St. Paul Looking to move/ ISO roommate

Hey there! I am 21 and I’m planning to move out of from parents place in the Chicago suburbs to a different state, so that there’s no chance of running into them accidentally. After I move out, I plan to start my transition from male to female. I’m on here looking for suggestions on which area would be safe yet affordable to move to. And if anyone is looking, I’m also down to be roommates with someone who is accepting.
