Announcements Subreddit Changes + Updates!

Heyo, Y'all!

You may have noticed some recent changes to the subreddit over the past hour or so. I'm happy to announce I've stepped in to manage this sub moving forward.

I found this sub after discovering that a community I run, r/TransPlace, had become overrun with name-suggestion posts. While looking for a solution to provide a better place for trans individuals seeking name suggestions, and responding to my subreddit members' request to calm the seas of name suggestion posts, I stumbled upon this subreddit.

After finding this subreddit to be unmoderated for the past few months, I didn't really feel comfortable sending members of TransPlace here as-is. I made a request to claim the subreddit, which has just gone through now.

With it, I've made some updates, which brings us up to speed! You'll notice a new icon (which I hastily created in a few minutes, hopefully its not too bad), and the subreddit banner we used over in r/TransPlace (This will likely be changed once I have a new one made <3).

I've also updated the flair names to capitalize them, revised the rules, and added an AutoMod configuration that should hopefully help with the subreddit's moderation.

I'll also be working on getting more subreddit mods moving forwards, so please look forwards to a post soon where we have an application if you're interested.

Cheers'

- Cleopatra

PS: If you have any suggestions for the subreddit, please feel free to post them in the comments here, I'll try to answer everyone <3

Story I have a different name in every friend group

Apparently, it's relatively common for transgender people to have multiple names they go by. But every person I know knows me by only one name; I just have different names in different communities.

I'm not going to say my real name, but I have an example name that is similar.

Legal name: Margaret

What my parents have always called me: Maggie

My name at school: MJ

My name at work: Mars

My name at summer camp: Rhett

My name at my other summer camp: Garret

Idk just wanted to share this. You can do whatever you want and if you can't pick a name, take all of them :)

Name Feedback Sonette vs Sonnette

Hello, I transitioned like six years ago but am thinking about changing my name to something gayer. I’ve landed on Sonette (pretty sure I made this up.) I want it to be pronounced similarly to the poem but with a distinct “ette” sound at the end. Similar to the word brunette.

I would like for it to read as sonn-ette and people to just understand that it’s supposed to be pronounced like the poem. To that end I can’t decide if I should include one letter N or two. I both want to guide people towards the correct pronunciation and have it be grammatically correct in English. I’m not particularly worried how the French will read it but it would be great if everyone got it right lol.

Any help is appreciated.

Edit: I do know that Sonnette means small bell but I don’t think most English speaking people know that.

Feminine Names New me, new name

I asked for some name suggestions a year or two ago, but ultimately, I decided to stick with Sophie, despite some really cool suggestions. Since then though, I have had a bit of a glow up, and it seems like it really is time for a change.

I’ve considered Emma, Evie, maybe Katie, but not quite sure they really fit.

All suggestions welcome, thanks 😊

Name Feedback formal or informal?

hi! so I (25ftm) am filling out paperwork to legally change my name and have reached somewhat of a conundrum. I go by charlie and have for a while now, but am wondering if i should have that as my legal name or go with the formal version of charles. I do like the name charles, so its not entirely alien, but ive really only gone by charlie.

however, I think it may be weird to have it as my legal name. charlie is a very gender neutral name where i live, a lot of little girls or even women my age are named charlie nowadays. i’ve had people who i’ve met via buying things on facebook marketplace say “oh i thought you would be a girl! with a name like charlie you never know!”

plus, my last name is very short and one syllable. its also pretty formal. nobody in my family has a name that ends in ‘ee’ and i think it may be because it just doesn’t sound quite right that way. trying not to dox myself so i’ll just say its very similar to ‘Tar’. so Charlie Tar or Charles Tar???

i think i’m starting to drive myself crazy over this lol i’m really just posting because i’m in desperate need of a sounding board! thanks!!!

Name Feedback Is the name “Rubin” a good name?

Iv been going by it for a bit now (though only one person irl calls me it) but I have heard people say it’s not a good name and they compare it to a sandwich and a whole bunch of other things. I know one person asked if it was set in stone or if I should change it

Masculine Names Guys I'm not trans but I need help

I want a masculine version of the name "Juri" I couldn't think of any. I'm designing an oc based on me but it's a guy and I've always used Jude or Jayden but I want something REALLY close to Juri than that. Any suggestions? It'll be better if it has Arabian, Hispanic, black or Latino backgrounds.

Masculine / Neutral Names Legally changing my name, but never thought of a new middle name?

I turn 18 in less than a week and I plan to finally start the process of legally changing my name. While looking at everything that's required I realized I never decided on a preferred middle name because, well why would I? Not like anyone calls me that. But my current middle name is Elizabeth which is a little too fem for my liking. I'm not exactly the most creative and this isn't something I feel is the most important in the world, so I thought I'd try to find some suggestions from other trans people.

Greyson "insert middle name" Winstead

My options right now are

Adrian - idk I just like the sound of it

Lee - also my siblings middle, named after my great grandma (never met her; she was lowk crazy)

Joy - after my grandma and aunts middle name (pretty chill people)

Open to suggestions or put in ur two cents idk lol, nobody I know personally has any input

Name Feedback Is it unusual to use names from different origins?

I know that somebody can use a name from a different origin, but is it "clocky" to do so?

My first and middle names are both Scottish. Tbh I had no idea, I couldn't be assed to find out the origin. One scottish name is kind of whatever, but both? I'm not Scottish. I don't think anybody will care but if they do, is it clocky? I think I'm overthinking it but I'm planning on going very stealth long term and again man I'm not from anywhere near Scotland

Name Feedback How To Tell If You're Forcing A Name?

Hi! I have a name that I love (Alula), but I have tried going by it a few times and it hasn't stuck. I'm trying again with it, because Some people have told me that they went back to a name and it was right that time, but I'm getting worried that I'm trying to force it. While I love it, and I think I would like to go by it, it also doesn't really fit me. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Name Feedback Would it be wrong to use this name??

Ok so basically there's this name thats been on my mind for a good while(I have alot of others that im happy to use but I wanted to add this ome to the list) the name is "Kovalsky" its a slightly altered version of the name "Kowalski" which is a Slavic sur name, and I wasn't sure if it would be in anyway rude to use "Kovalsky" as a first name and if it was, is there any names that sound akin to it that would be on the table?

Name Feedback Debian as a name?

I've been really seriously questioning Debian as a name (transmasc) but I'm not sure if it's a good idea considering that it's literally a Linux distro lmao

I'm a pretty nerdy guy who lives on Linux and a friend proposed Debian as a name at first as a joke but like, it could be a great name. It sound approximately llike Dorian, Lilian, or Demian, so it could totally be a name

The thing is that I'm going to uni for data science and my name might cause some questions but arguably it's a cool name to have in a community of computer geeks so it's a pro looking at it like that

Neutral Names Names?

Sooo I have 3 names in mind because I hate my first name (ppl just call me by my last name.)

Krypton:-not the kryptonite that makes Superman weak, but it sounds really cool and cyber themed. Also used in lasers! Pretty cool right?

Xenon:-kinda gives off an alien vibe. Used in spacecraft ion engines.

Astatine:-radioactive, medicine vibe? (Well fun fact it’s used in cancer medicine)

(Can you tell I like the periodic table?)

Oh yeah forgot these are my top 3 choices so which one should I choose lol

Masculine / Neutral Names Name I’m unsure about

I’ve been going by the name ‘Cole’ around some friends (trans masc/non-binary for context), and it felt great at first, but now it just kind of feels strange, almost like it’s too masculine and it doesn’t fit me anymore?

I really like the name Cove, but after having asked a few people (aka made a different post on a different subreddit) they said it sounds feminine to them, when I’m more looking for something that’s masculine/neutral sounding. And Cove sounds like that to me, but if it doesn’t to other people and that’s how they perceive me…

I’m curious about your opinions on the name Cove, if it makes you think feminine or masculine or somewhere in between. I also want to hear if any of you have any different names suggestions. I just want them to begin with C and preferably be kind of short, but I’ll take any ideas. Thank you.

Name Feedback Name test

Hello! I’d like to be personal with this post and will also post in r/transnames as well. I am currently is HS right now and really wanted to change my name before freshman year for a clean slate. It’s way too late for me now, but I still need some opinion. I have a clocky given name (not a deadname if I don’t have a chosen one🥲) and it had definitely affected my ability to pass. I was given (Spoiler for individuals who’d like to respect my privacy) Alice by my parent, and I don’t hate the name, but I pass 100% of the time with strangers until they know my name. The name also just isn’t for me, so I wanted opinions from other trans people on the topic. I’ve had trouble picking out a name because I don’t know what it means for the name to feel like it fits. When I find a name I like it’s because I like the name, but not for myself. Currently my top contende is Calvin, some others are Peter, Toby, Ryan, Jack, Alex, and (only because of my given name) Alistair. My parents were between Alice and Josephine, the masc equivalent was Jonathan, but not one for Alice. I have posted a couple time in other subs on what name suits my face best, but I didn’t really get enough votes for good poll result. I know I like They/He pronouns for myself, and was wondering if there was an agreed acronym for interchangeable in our community.

Edit: Calvin is a name my mom had picked out for in the uterus me. This came from the character Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes. I am blonde haired and can now see a resemblance to him between us, and I have come to a liking of it.

Neutral Names neutral names - nonbinary

hello everyone! i’m looking for a gender neutral name — i’ve been going by ‘bee’ for several years now, but as i’m growing up it doesn’t seem to suit me anymore. it works great a nickname from friends, but i want something more serious as i’m graduating from university and moving into the workplace soon. names can’t be inherently unprofessional, but it seems like a name for 14 year old me rather than 21 year old me.
i’m open to any and all suggestions! i tend to lean a little more feminine i think because of my upbringing and what i’ve always been used to, but i’m also open to more masculine-leaning names. pure androgynous names are most preferred, though.
i’d also love to hear suggestions based on my deadname, lucinda. that name isn’t mine anymore, but it holds a special place in my heart and i like the idea of it being connected to my new name. it’ll also help ease any transition with family members.
bonus points for spanish and scottish names!
anyway, here are some pics of me that might spark inspiration :-)
