Job Search Tips (2025-12): Maybe Start Here?

This is a collection of tips for being more effective in your job search, written on 2025-12 and updated as recently as 2026-05.

See also the r/torontoJobs Wiki.

1. The Resume

Your resume is the among the first starting points for improvement. A decent checklist to check your resume against is the one at the Canada Job Bank Resume Guide (Backup link: here).

Where to get some more help on a resume:

  • Employment Ontario: If you are a Citizen or Permanent Resident, you can get 1-on-1 assistance for your resume at an Employment Ontario agency (website). If you are a temporary resident, you can still attend their group workshops on resume writing if they hold any. They may also provide wage incentives.
  • Brainfuse at Public Libraries: Many libraries in the Greater Toronto Area offer a service called Brainfuse. You can upload your resume and receive critique within 24 hours.
  • University/College Career Centres: For post-secondary students and alumni
  • Lifemark Vocational Services: Free workshops
  • Reddit: Subreddits like r/resumes or others can be a way to get crowdsourced feedback on your resume.

More Notes Related to Resumes:

  • Writing resumes is not just a matter of "just use AI", no automated tool exists which can completely eliminate the need for thoughtful human input on resumes.
  • Even if you don't have time to tailor your resume for every job, at least do this for every type of job.
  • The quality of resume editing varies significantly, even among those who call themselves "professionals."
  • Having a poorly done LinkedIn public profile can work against you.
  • If your target job typically expects you to provide a portfolio such as the case of graphics design portfolios, consider your portfolio an extended part of your resume which needs to be polished.
  • Lying on your resume can backfire on you, unfortunately this point is worth mentioning again here.

2. Expand Your Job Search

MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE UPLOADED YOUR RESUME ON JOB BANK. If you see jobs shown as LMIA, see this guide here.

Consider this in addition to using the usual typical job boards (e.g., Job Bank, Indeed, Eluta).

Some additional considerations for the job search:

  • Timing of Job Posts: Generally speaking, try to apply to jobs that have been newly posted. If the job has been posted for quite some time but has still not been filled, it might be a dormant job posting and may not be worth your time.
  • Seasonality: Notice how hiring fluctuates depending on time of year and respond accordingly.
  • Target "Adjacent" Roles: Look for related roles where you can use your skills, be open to being more flexible.

Online job posting websites can become crowded with job applications. You may need to add other methods:

  • Go Directly to Employer Websites: Job posting websites may not include postings which may be found on an employer's website.
  • Network: Let people you know that you’re looking for work. Reach out to people in your target industry for "informational interviews." Attend relevant job fairs and career events.
  • Recruitment Agencies: Some companies outsource their hiring to staffing firms. Note that these recruitment agencies get compensated if they get you hired, and that they aren't necessarily looking out for you.
  • Targeted Walk-ins: For local businesses as well as certain businesses, dropping off a physical resume to the hiring manager can be more effective than only doing online applications. Go during a less busy time and ask to talk to their hiring manager.
  • Volunteer for Experience: Volunteering for non-profits can be a way to build up your network, gain references, and relevant skills. Food pantries and thrift stores are examples of several to start volunteering.

3. Employment Ontario Agencies

Employment Ontario is a provincial network of agencies that helps people find work. The level of help they provide is limited by your status in Canada. In addition to providing one-on-one job counselor, they may provide group workshops related to employment.

Their website: Employment Ontario

Eligibility for Services:

  • Assisted Services: One-on-one sessions with a job counselor (for resume help and job matching) are generally limited by your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses.
  • Temporary Residents: If you are here on a study permit or work permits as a temporary resident, you may not necessarily qualify for their one-on-one job counseling. However, you might be able to attend some of their group workshops free-of-charge depending on the agency.

Employment Ontario agencies operate under a "results-based" funding model to meet certain "outcome numbers" such as placing people in any job, this can influence the type of help you receive.

Pick your agency carefully, they may have different employment partners as well as differences in how much support you can get.

4. Subsidized Training and Funded Work Experience

The government offers various programs to help specific groups enter the workforce through free or paid incentives and training. These programs are limited to your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses. Many of these programs are with Employment Ontario agencies, ask them about it.

Some such programs as follows:

  • Pre-Apprenticeship Training: Free programs that include job-specific training to help you start a career, many of these programs being for the skilled trades.
  • Better Jobs Ontario: Provides up to for tuition and living expenses if you have been laid off or are in a low-income household and need to retrain for an in-demand career.
  • Wage Incentives for Employers: Programs like Canada Summer Jobs provide wage subsidies for employers to hire youth (ages 15-30). Other specialized incentives may exist for employers who hire persons with disabilities or those facing significant barriers to work.

These guidelines keep posts more consistent and help the community at r/torontoJobs to find information quicker. They may not be strictly enforced due to limited moderator capacity.

1. Post Title Prefix

You can also use the corresponding post flairs to have your posts have more visibility.

2. General Guidelines (For Both Job Posts and Job Requests)

  • Posts must be relevant to the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Remote roles are allowed if GTHA-area applicants apply.
  • Don’t post personal information such as SIN numbers or personal contact information; use DMs to private message or use posted contact information of employers.

Job hunting really shows you who's real. People I've known for months offer referrals without me asking for it, while friends of 10+ years send me LinkedIn job posts

I've landed all my jobs on my own, mostly by applying through LinkedIn without any referrals. So I'm not saying I expect people to find me a job or pull strings for me.

But something I've noticed whenever I've been job hunting is that people I've known for just a few months have offered to refer me to their bosses without me even asking. Meanwhile, people I've known for 10+ years who work in the same field just send me LinkedIn job postings. Lmao, thanks, I have LinkedIn too 😭

I'm not currently looking for referrals, but I've always found this interesting. I wonder if friends in the same industry sometimes see me as their competition, which makes them less willing to help.

And btw, I never expected referrals for roles above my skillsets. In the past, recruiters reached out to me about roles that were too senior and I humbly declined because I'm not willing to fake it.

Obviously, nobody owes anyone a referral, and even sharing job postings is a nice gesture. But it's interesting how people you've barely known can sometimes go out of their way to help more than people you've known for a decade.

Stats from just under a year of job searching

Post image
30 Upvotes

Thought the sub might find this interesting. Posting on behalf of my partner who is 30F with 5+ years of experience in marketing.

She was looking for a new job while working a full-time job, so most of the searching and applying was during evenings and weekends. This also meant she could afford to be a little picky and withdrew early from a few positions where the fit didn’t seem right.

Started applying a bunch in December and January, a bit in February, then slowed down and did a little over the summer until the last bunch in September finally led to an offer.

A couple of the final round exits were rejections, but she also had one where the position was paused indefinitely, and one where she backed out because she got bad vibes from the hiring manager.

Graphic made with AI from a spreadsheet she kept tracking all of her applications.

It finally happened!

After 4 months of looking for a job, I have finally got an offer and will be starting early next month. Countless days of scrolling through this subs and talking with people who are in the same situation have helped me a lot going through rough time. And I just want to give back to the community however I can, I would like to share a leads on where you could look for some opportunities.

My background and industry: AEC - grads in 2024, have 2 years of working experience (most recently a year oversea) + 4 more years of managerial experience in unrelated industry.

Where to look for temporary employment (maybe skewed because some option here are only for citizens): sign up with employment ontario and get them refer you to employment agency. I know right now [YES](https://www.yes.on.ca/) is hiring a lot of positions in various sectors. And be aggressive if they are not effective (switching agency, ask your employment ontario rep to switch to difference agency). And don't lose hope !

Feel free to DM me or reach out even if you just need to vent (i know) :)

Hang in there!

soon to be uni grad with no career plan...help

I'll be graduating with a BA in psych in 6 months and i'm genuinely lost on what direction to go in after school. i've always been a big academic person i enjoy school a lot but this last year has sucked the life out of me i know i seriously need a break.

ive been open to lots of things like masters programs in either counselling psych or social work. also considered teachers college but have heard rly bad things esp being in ontario. originally i liked the idea of private practice for the flexibility and good money but idk if that's what i want to do. i do like working with kids for the busy environments with variety to keep things interesting. i also like working with older adults so i thought SW for the diversity of opportunities yet i have also heard downsides abt pay and how emotional taxing it is. i am a people person ive worked admin/ customer service jobs all my life and i like things that keep my mind/body active not mindless repetition. Ive considered sales or real estate or being a business owner but huge risks and i like the security of a good paying job with benefits. work life balance is a big priority for me. there are just so many factors to consider - which im grateful for - but also its very overwhelming as well. i dont think i could just do a job for money but also i have many hobbies and travel i want to fund so who knows...

any insight helps!!! i'm 22 and in southern ontario

How are you landing a job?

Those who landed a job this year, how did you do it? Did you personally apply to jobs, got AI to do it or got help from a headhunter? Please also specify your industry to get a better idea which strategy is showing better results where though I know no strategy is really working in this job market.

If there's anyone who is in process engineering or health and safety, please let me know.

Has Anyone Withdrawn and Reapplied for the Same TTC Job Posting?

Hey everyone,

I recently applied for a co-op position at the TTC through their careers portal. Unfortunately, after submitting my application, I realized I forgot to attach my unofficial university transcript, which is one of the required documents.

I noticed there's an option to withdraw my application, and the TTC website mentions that applicants can resubmit before the deadline.

Has anyone actually done this before? If I withdraw my application, will I be able to apply again for the same position from scratch and upload all my documents properly? Or will it just resubmit my original application without allowing any changes?

I've already emailed TTC Recruitment and left a voicemail, but I haven't heard back yet.

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences from anyone who's been through something similar. I don't want to risk losing my application.

Thanks in advance!

Just need something 😢

I had an interview at a ‘company’’ about a month ago it went ok but I didn’t get it, about 10 days later I was excited to see another job appear and applied and got an instant interview, 8 minutes later the interview got cancelled.

Like I said before, imo there was no flags, it went ok and the interviewer even talked about the onboarding if I got it.

Fast forward to the past weekend, I applied for another job at the same company, got an interview but it got cancelled in 2 minutes

Is it possible that I have a DNH on my file? The 2nd cancellation was just too quick imo 😢

On top of this, I’ve had 3 interviews the past 3 weeks and was ghosted on getting a reply for all of them.

I just feel totally useless and what little confidence I’ve had has gone and I need something asap and just keep applying and get nowhere. It’s just so tough right now and I feel that it’s not when I get a job, more if 😢

Unemployed in Toronto: How are you managing/making money right now?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been unemployed for almost two years now, and to say the job market in the GTA is rough right now feels like an understatement. The job hunt has been brutal, and with the cost of living here, staying afloat is getting harder by the day.

For those of you currently without a full-time job, how are you getting by?

  • Are you doing side gigs, freelancing, or contract work?
  • Have you found any decent casual or temp labor options around the city?
  • Any under-the-radar ways you’ve been managing expenses or earning a bit of extra cash?

I'd really appreciate any tips, advice, or even just hearing how others in the same boat are navigating this.

Thanks in advance.

3 interviews later, this agency handed me 3 days of unpaid work. I said no thanks.

I went through three interviews with a marketing agency that works with some pretty big brands. Everything went well and they told me there would be a short assignment to complete before the final interview. However, there were already a few red flags.

During the interviews, they repeatedly emphasized how hectic the work environment is and how tight their deadlines are. They also mentioned that next year would be their busiest yet, which made me wonder how secure this position would actually be once things slowed down.

Most of their questions revolved around how quickly I could work and how many projects I could juggle. I started feeling like I was interviewing for a position in ER. Their contract also prohibits employees from taking on freelance work outside the company. Meanwhile, the salary isn't even competitive.

Anyway, I made it to the final interview and they sent me an assignment document. I open the assignment and it's FIVE PAGES, FOURTEEN DELIVERABLES!?!?

I'm talking two videos, an entire marketing campaign, multiple design assets, and a bunch of resizing work. And here's the best part: it wasn't even for a fictional company. It was for one of their actual clients.

I've been working in design and marketing for over five years, and even if I worked very efficiently, this assignment would take me around three full days to complete. All unpaid. And still no guarantee of a job.

I stared at the document for about 30 minutes, then I emailed them, thanked them for their time, and politely declined wanting to move forward. They CCed some managers, thanked me and said if I change my mind, I can contact them.

I've completed design assignments in the past and successfully landed jobs because of them. But those assignments usually took no more than 2–3 hours, and some companies actually paid me for my time. With the job market being so competitive, some employers seem increasingly comfortable asking candidates to complete ridiculous tasks, knowing that desperate applicants might feel they have no choice.

Please value your time. A job opportunity shouldn't require you to become an unpaid employee.

HIRING POST (WE'RE HIRING) [HIRING] Love stocks, investing, social media AND have a sense of humour? We're hiring! ($20/hr)

Do you live and breathe social media, love stocks and investing, and have a great sense of humour?

Are you the kind of person who lives on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or Reddit, but also finds yourself constantly curious about stocks, learning about investing, and thinking about the financial markets?

Can you explain why a stock is interesting, understand what makes content go viral, and find the humor in the absurdity of financial markets?

If social media, investing, and comedy are three things you're passionate about, we want to hear from you.

What we're building

I'm the founder of Wholeheart, a Toronto-based production and talent management company. We produce Breaking Bread with BeardOh, a celebrity dining and interview show featuring guests including Yung Gravy, Steph Tolev, Ari Kytsya, and more.

We're now developing a new digital media channel focused on stocks, investing, and financial education, and we're looking for a Content & Social Media Coordinator to help us build it from the ground up.

We're starting with short-form educational and informational videos, but we're planning to quickly expand into podcasts, interviews, and longer-form original programming. We'll explore individual companies, market trends, investing strategies, and the experiences of everyday investors.

And we want to have fun doing it. Humour, personality, and creativity will be a big part of what makes this channel different.

What you'll be doing

This isn't just a job scheduling social media posts. You'll be involved in helping shape the content, creative direction, and growth of a new media brand.

  • Help develop and execute our social media and audience growth strategy.
  • Research stocks, companies, investing topics, and financial news to identify interesting content opportunities.
  • Assist with writing video scripts, social media copy, captions, and creative hooks.
  • Brainstorm entertaining, educational, and funny content ideas.
  • Manage content calendars, publishing, and community engagement across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, Discord, Substack, and emerging platforms.
  • Identify trends, creators, and opportunities to reach new audiences.
  • Track analytics and help figure out what's working, what's not, and how we can improve.
  • Collaborate with our production team as we expand into podcasts, interviews, and long-form content.

You'll also have opportunities to contribute to Breaking Bread with BeardOh and other Wholeheart productions.

Who we're looking for

There are three things we're especially looking for:

1. You live and breathe social media.

You understand the platforms, follow trends, know what makes content engaging, and have ideas about growing an audience. You're someone who notices why a video works, not just that it went viral.

2. You're genuinely passionate about stocks, investing, and finance.

You don't need to be a financial expert, but you should enjoy researching companies, following markets, learning about investing, and discussing financial topics. Bonus points if you're already active in investing communities.

3. You've got a great sense of humour.

You appreciate comedy, have creative instincts, and can help make financial topics entertaining without sacrificing their educational value. We're not looking to make another dry financial news channel.

Beyond that, we'd love someone who:

  • Is a strong writer who enjoys researching, brainstorming, and developing creative ideas.
  • Is organized, curious, proactive, and comfortable collaborating with others.
  • Has experience building, managing, or growing social accounts, communities, or digital projects.
  • Is excited about helping build something new and contributing ideas rather than simply following instructions.

Students, recent graduates, and self-taught creators are all welcome to apply. We're more interested in your abilities, interests, and what you've actually done than your specific degree.

Opportunity for growth

This position will start part-time to start, but we're building something with much bigger ambitions.

Our goal is to grow this channel into a substantial digital media property, expanding from short-form content into podcasts, interviews, and original programming.

If the channel takes off, there's a very real opportunity for this role to evolve into a full-time position.

We're looking for someone who's excited about getting involved early, contributing creatively, and helping build something from the ground up.

The details

Company: Wholeheart
Position: Content & Social Media Coordinator
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Compensation: $20/hour
Type: Paid, part-time position with potential to become full-time
Start: As soon as possible

How to apply

Email [jobs@wholeheart.co](mailto:jobs@wholeheart.co) with:

  1. Your résumé and a short introduction about yourself.
  2. Links or examples of social accounts, communities, campaigns, or digital projects you've helped create, manage, or grow.
  3. Why this combination of social media, investing, and humor interests you.

If you've written scripts, created funny content, grown a social account, or built something interesting on your own, we'd especially love to see it.

Subject line: Content & Social Media Coordinator – Reddit

Looking forward to hearing from you!

How does everyone switch jobs in IT in Toronto?

Hello,

I have been working in IT operations and infrastructure for one of the top construction companies, started off as user support however, my responsibilities moved more towards operations and cloud infrastructure, and escalations from other junior colleagues and mentoring them.

The problem is my title has not changed, my pay has not increased as much over time besides annual increments. There are couple of junior colleagues that are paid higher than me, my boss and I tried alot to get the pay and promotion I deserve but got another insignificant increase with reasoning that it’s an off cycle pay raise so this the best.

I am sick of waiting for the next annual review for a promotion probably it’s not going to make any difference.

I love what I do so I keep doing it despite issues with pay and my title, but it keeps bothering me that the guys that I mentor when they need help are getting paid more than me, meanwhile I am the one taking ownership of most complex projects and handholding people that make more money than me sometimes.

I have been applying on linked in doing the basics tailoring resume based on the JD, etc. reaching out to people, I will admit I am still not putting in my 100% on it. But after couple days of applying I see same postings or postings posted months ago.

What are some other platforms other than linked in?
Any tips on stepping up my game or standing out?

I have never switched jobs before so not even sure how the transition works lol

Any sort of advice, tips, motivation is appreciated

commute and mental health

i am wondering how everyone handles their long commute time and the effect it can have on your mental health. i drive into the city daily from about 30 minutes north of vaughan give or take. my total drive each way is approx an hour and a half/two hours. sometimes this adds up to 4 hours a day of driving. i previously have done long commutes but the opposite way so i was never going with traffic. it has been about a year and i am finding it completely unbearable and hard to justify. i see everyone else doing it, sometimes even father from barrie etc and think maybe it will get better? finding it hard to find work closer to home as i recently switched careers so this has been my one shot in my new field. does it make others crazy? how do you justify it and bear it day in and day out?
