Discussion Heat Wave!

This unseasonably warm day really sucks for anyone who lives in a building with central air that's already switched to hearing and has no AC.

Cooking in here tonight.

I have all these handknits that need wearing before it gets really cold and I just have to cover them up with a winter coat.

AC has been off for about 3 weeks now. My place is roasting.

I get the bylaw but it seems silly they don't factor in the time it takes for a building to cool off + the natural heat generated by everything inside a unit. It can be 10C outside, all my windows open and its still 27C in my condo.

So glad I've kept the window AC still installed. My nephew was born at the end of September, and he came home from the hospital on the hottest day of the year. My mum knitted him a going home outfit and he ended up in a ninja turtles onesie.

It's been interesting to see people in parkas and others in shorts today.

As a long term Toronto high rise enjoyer, I consider owning a high quality portable air conditioner to be non negotiable.

Not that the INDESPENSIBLE feature is dual hose - single hose are such trash they should be illegal. Keeping in mind, some of them have two hoses in one, and those can be decent.

Super curious how the dual hose changes things for you? I’ve got a single because of how painful shoulder seasons are in high rise condos… and it’s pretty crap. It’ll do the job when it’s only 22 degrees outside but on warmer days? Forget it. Not to mention noisy as heck for very poor efficiency.

It's because the single hose ones are warming the air you're sucking from outside before it even gets to the unit. In a dual hose one tube sucks in air from outside and the other dumps the even hotter air back outside, since they don't touch you're not warming the intake air up, it's way more effective.

I have a 12,000 BTU dual hose unit and it is great, it can make the bedroom ice cold even if it's 40 degrees outside, single hose units suck in comparison. If you can definitely upgrade to a dual hose one, it's worth it. Although it's still going to be noisy at least it can actually cool your place.

Note: you should check to make sure the hoses will fit in your window as that part tends to be bigger since it has two of them of course.

Shouldn’t the unit be removing some ambient room air?

2

No, the air inside just goes into the unit, gets passed over the cool evaporator coil and is blown right back indoors at a lower temperature, no air from inside goes outside.

The heat is removed from the unit by the flow of air going outside, that's why the exhaust air is hotter than the intake from outside. But that is a separate loop, the outside air and the inside air never mix.

Before we got a lawyer to help us draft a Section 98 agreement permitting us to install our own heat pump on the balcony we had both single and dual hose portable AC units. The dual hose was a huge upgrade over the single hose because waste heat was exhausted outside instead of just warming the air inside around the unit. This means the dual is more efficient and has better cooling capacity than a single hose with the same BTU because its not also attempting to cool its own waste heat.

I got mine a day before the wildfire/heatwave week and absolutely love it. My mum sent pics of her new china cabinet that she's been enjoying displaying/looking at her fragile things. I responded with a pic of my new AC that I'd been gazing at adoringly.

I bought a south facing condo because I thought it’d be great saving on heating costs…didn’t count on it always being insanely hot lol.

I’m next to a park and my balcony gets quite warm, so there’s tons of boxelder bugs and other assorted critters that love it, so I can’t even keep the door open (and I have a screen!).

next time I buy I’m definitely making sure the building is a four pump system lol.

Wish they had an option to choose between heat vs AC :-|

Those exist, best purchase of my life!

It feels like every time my condo switches on the ac or off the ac, the weather changes to me needing it for a few days after.

Can never make everyone happy…

Overall it would've been the right call to switch to heat by now based on recent weather. Sucks tonight tho

23

u/McFestus 1d ago

Yeah, and there's legal requirements on minimum temperature that make landlords nervous about delaying. But we switched in the last week of September and I haven't had to actually turn the heat on at all, at any point.

7

u/cliffx 1d ago

It hasn't been all that cold yet, I've resisted turning on the heat so far and it's been absolutely fine. I'll probably get around to it this weekend.

20

u/Whohasredditentirely 1d ago

There's no need to switch to heat until it drops to below 10c outside regularly. The city guidelines are insane

2

u/SeverenDarkstar 1d ago

Yeah it was getting quite cold last week

2

u/GAMING_SERVER_ADMIN 20h ago

Can't make everyone happy, but temperature should be 20-22 if I recall. People in 25-30c heat is insane and not healthy at all especially for babies and kids.

Screw these bldgs and their dumbass management. Ours, a supposed "luxury" building built last year switched it. My mom had to leave the home today because she's ill and it was unbearably hot.

4

u/BrilliantCucumber444 1d ago

Blame the city bylaws then. They have to turn it on Oct 1

5

u/WhereIsMySun 1d ago

Fair, screw these bylaws. Totally misses the needs of the people

u/niamulsmh 1d ago

Got switched off on the 8th.. last night was brutal, as was the whole day

Landlords are stuck with provincial rules where individual units don't have climate control. Or where the landlord/property management doesn't have the time or interest in micromanaging building temperatures. Uncomfortable, sure, but not dangerous. I had a south-facing high rise apartment for a while and it was always too warm. I've also been in older steam-heated buldings where I would have the windows cracked all winter

Hit a high of around 31c here. All windows open. As of right now around 26c.

Thankfully I have a portable AC for the bedroom. Camped out there at 22c with the door closed.

Honestly with the world warming up we shouldn’t switch to heat until mid November.

2

u/Whrecks 1d ago

It's literally going to be single digits every evening/ night starting tomorrow

2

u/Over-Imagination3924 1d ago

I went outside and felt it.

2

u/astrangeone88 1d ago

Had a day off, started off wearing a sweatshirt over a tee shirt and pants and ended up sweating through BOTH. Didn't take off my sweatshirt as was doing a massive grocery haul via TTC and my hands were full.

6

u/Live-Low-7725 1d ago

25 degree gang

7

u/BoomJayKay Harbourfront 1d ago

27.5 here. South facing is killer.

4

u/tdeee10 1d ago

Ugh felttt. It’s fucking hot right now !!

3

u/tekky101 23h ago

Climate change is making it harder to plan these changeovers. Spring used to be a relatively smooth warming curve over time and Autumn used to be a relatively smooth cooling curve over time. Now these curves are jagged and choppy.

Buildings are required by law to maintain a minimum temperature but there is no restriction for maximum temperature so Management will typically plan changeovers to occur when temperatures are forecast in single digits for several days but anomalous heat spikes into double digits still occur.

Don’t worry. You’ll be freezing in a few weeks. Everybody is a complainer I swear.

u/MeowMix1206251 1d ago

It being cold in the future doesn’t help present hotness, and vice versa lol.

I’d stay off Reddit if you want to avoid people complaining online

9

u/GlobexSuper 1d ago

Valid complaint since it was 25C today

Last chance to hold an impromptu beach theme party.

u/magicdowhatyouwill 16h ago

Whole bunches of people got crappy sleep the last few nights. This is what happens when everybody's that much tireder.

I am confused how did a warm afternoon cause you poor sleep? I don’t have any AC and I slept fine.

2

u/magicdowhatyouwill 13h ago

I have an east-facing apartment with one of those glass window walls. When there's a day this warm and no AC (and actually, especially when it's humid) it holds that heat like a sauna. So yeah, I woke up a few times last night having kicked off the sheets and full-on sweating.

3

u/Sushi69_ 1d ago

Never say bad about a random warm day just before the winters

2

u/6sbeepboop 1d ago

I can’t schleep and I’m grumpy

1

u/ShesAaRebel 18h ago

I'm not sure if my building heat is on, but its usually a bit cool in the winter. I don't mind it, cause I like wearing my comfy clothes, and I have a space heater if desperate.

There's no central AC, and I have a portable one. No need to plug it in yesterday! Jist had the window open a crack, and turned on the fan when I got home to cool off.

Sometimes the crappy old buildings have their advantages.

1

u/magicdowhatyouwill 16h ago

Days like this I really miss my old apartment in the first floor of an old house where the walls were eight miles thick and it was nice and cool, all the time.

1

u/PlasticWolverine302 14h ago

Try radiant heating, being on the top floor and facing the direct setting sun. 🥵 All my windows are open and I'm still running fans a lot lately (already removed my window AC before October 1st as per building notices threatening fees).

Do takeout for the night instead

u/Away_Ad_6262 1d ago

Some people will find literally anything to complain about. Soon you’ll be complaining about the cold.

You don't know the definition of heat wave
