This is a bit of a discussion post, talking about the differences between a tonsil stone versus an infection. I have personally seen many posts as of late, "Is this a tonsil stone?". Nine times out of ten, it is NOT a tonsil stone. This post here is to help guide someone to know if it is a tonsil stone, or if you need to go to the doctor due to an infection.
Let's start this off with, what is a tonsil stone? A tonsil stone is a lump of calcified materials within the tonsils, also known as a Tonsillolith. Tonsil stones are benign, and oftentimes easy to remove with a gentle push against said tonsil if said stone is visible. Tonsil stones will appear embedded within the tonsil, NOT sitting on top of the tonsils. Oftentimes, the tonsil stone will not cause pain. Common symptoms can include a sensation of something stuck in the throat and bad breath. Much rarer symptoms include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and ear pain. These symptoms are rare, and oftentimes not seen.
What is NOT a tonsil stone? Oftentimes, posts on here include images of people with patches on their tonsils. Patches are on top of the tonsils, not embedded within. Think of a scab on your arm, that's what a patch is. DO NOT touch said patch whatsoever, as that can spread the bacteria or virus that is causing said patches. There are a few main things that can cause patches and tonsillitis (swelling of the tonsils), such as a bacterial infection, viral infection, or an STI.
What is the bacterial infection? The bacterial infection is more commonly known as Strep Throat, also known as Streptococcal Pharyngitis. Symptoms include a sore throat, fevers, chills, patches on the tonsils, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. The bacteria is contagious and is transmitted through the mucus or sores of someone else with strep throat. Oftentimes, after a diagnosis a doctor will prescribe antibiotics.
What is the viral infection? The viral infection is known as Mono, or Mononucleosis. The symptoms are large lymph nodes, fatigue, sore throat, and can cause tonsils similar in appearance to those in Strep Throat. Antibiotics will not help with a virus.
What is the STD? Most STDs do not affect the throat, but the most common is Chlamydia. Though rare, it can cause symptoms such as a sore throat, mouth sores, and dental problems. Oral STDs will not look similar to Strep or Mono. Tonsils may be enlarged, but may not have patches. Oftentimes, the main symptoms will be a sore throat and swollen tonsils.
Also a note, we aren't doctors. Some of the images I've seen on here require medical attention due to the severity of the patches. It doesn't help that people keep picking off their patches. PLEASE do not touch your patches, I swear to God. You will make your condition worse. Please look up pictures of tonsil stones versus strep throat and compare the differences. Also, if your throat is sore, don't touch it whatsoever even if you're 100% confident it's just a tonsil stone.

Went to urgent care two days ago and the doctor said I had a white spot on my throat. I half jokingly asked if it was a tonsil stone. She said no, so I didn’t bother checking.
Today I go again because of sudden severe nausea and this doctor said it was tonsil stones. I knew deep down they were since sometimes when I coughed, I swallowed something hard.
So once I got home I ran to the mirror, and I was so shocked. I should’ve taken a picture of my throat, but if you’ve had tonsil stones before you already know what it looks like. I poked at it with my finger and a piece came out, which I didn’t expect, so I started to panic slightly. Then I went at it with this q tip and good lord.
I know it doesn’t look like a lot, and I’m sure many of you have had worse. I’m surprised I didn’t gag getting these out. I saw a little more deep in a little pocket, but I started to gag so I left it alone. My tonsil is decently swollen, not from the prodding, and I’m somewhat relieved.
To those who get severe tonsil stones, I want to apologize for underestimating your struggles.

I have tonsil stones quite often. I feel like it happens most of the time due to me not chewing my food fully. Is that one cause of it? I have had it for years but then it stopped for a while and it's now it's bad again.
The biggest issue with tonsil stones is the feeling that something is stuck in your throat when you swallow because you know there are tonsil stones there. The only way I have gotten tonsil stones out is if I accidentally cough it out or I intentionally gag and throw up.
I then recently tried salt with water rinse as I read that helps. I done that a few times and noticed I was able to cough at a few of these tonsil stones. Recently, I coughed out several tonsil stones doing this. However, I still have 1 or 2 tonsil stones stuck there as I still feel it in my throat. I wasn't able to cough it out after salt and water rinse.
When you rinse your mouth with salt and water, you do make sure the salt and water gets touches the bottom of your throat right? Otherwise, it doesn't help? My tonsil stones are not visible if I open my mouth.
I read some people mention CVS Daily Sea Salt Oral Rinse, Arctic Ocean and how it helps. Can others confirm this works? So after you rinse your mouth with it, do you usually cough the tonsil stones out immediately? Or does it come out later? Has anyone here not had any success with it?
Is it essentially the same as you using salt and water but this is more expensive? Or is it really better since it has other ingredients? Is there any concern with swallowing a bit of it or not? I know with listerine mouthwash, you can swallow a bit as long as it isn't much.

My left tonsil and peritonsillar pilar is already bigger than my right d/t having a PTA 3 months ago. But 4 days ago I had swelling at the top of the peritonsillar pillar and over the last couple days these lumps are appearing. The soonest I can see my ENT is in 5 days. Does it look like embedded tonsil stones? Mucoid cyst? Something worse? No pain, just slightly when I swallow due to location and where it rubs

I’ve been getting tonsil stones every day for the past three months and that’s not an exaggeration. My tonsils have a bunch of holes in them and every day i’m taking one, sometimes up to 5 out a day. Do you think i’ll qualify to get a tonsillectomy? It’s been ruining my day to day life because I’m constantly checking and extracting tonsil stones. I’m just worried that tonsil stones alone are not enough for me to qualify for the surgery because I know that they are pretty hesitant about taking tonsils out in adults.

Had a sore throat for a couple days. Promoted me to look at my throat and saw white streaks. Never had a fever or any other symptoms (other than the usual sinus congestion that’s on and off for me; probably allergies)
Sore throat went away after like 2 or 3 days. White stuff persisted. It’d been almost 3 weeks and I spent way too much money on an ENT appt. He said it’s most likely mucus buildup / tonsil stones and not to worry just observe if anything gets significantly worse.
It’s been 2 more weeks, it’s ebbed and flowed. I’m freakin out!
Tbh, I do vape. 🙃

I have tonsil crypts on one side of my throat and even though I can remove some tonsil stones and I brush three times a day, I use coconut oil as mouthwash and scrape my tongue. I feel like I still have bad breath because I cannot reach all tonsil stones in the back. I also use warm salt water to gargle but it still doesn’t loosen them.
Any tips?? I’m scared of removing them through surgery. I want to try other methods first.

So I pushed on my tonsil to try and get this tonsil stone out because the area is literally swollen to the size of about a nickel. Like when I swallow it feels like there is something stuck in my throat. Now it’s bleeding and there is greyish pus/tissue, I can’t tell which one. Trying to figure out if I should wait to be able to make a dentist appointment, go to urgent care (they said they probably can’t do much), or head to the emergency room. The blood isn’t gushing, but is steady and bright red, enough to color my spit bright red. My stomach hurts bad, unsure if I swallowed a lot of blood or not and my ear on that side is very sore as well. Of course my throat is also sore.

I watched a video of someone extracting tonsil stones once, and somehow, it has now become my weekly routine. I’m able to remove most of them from the pockets of my left tonsil, but my right tonsil seems much tighter, and I can barely get anything out of it.
Has anyone else experienced this? Also, am I making the pockets in my left tonsil looser by scraping them every week, or is it normal for the two sides to be different?
Also, I’m currently using an earbud. Should I upgrade to anything specific?

I’ve never gotten tonsil stones before, I’m 23. A few months a go I woke up in the middle of the night to huge stones coming out of my tonsils. Now I wake up every day with bad breath. EVERY SINGLE NIGHT I: floss, brush my teeth, scrape my tongue with a metal scraper, waterpik, and mouthwash. Sometimes i garge hydrogen peroxide. Wtf do I do. It’s triggering my ocd and now my tonsils hurt from prodding them with q tips. It’s really starting to piss me off and freak me out, I’ve gotten them consistently after the past few months.
My right tonsil and left tonsil have very different shapes so I can’t push on the left one I just wait until big ones fall out. My right one has little pockets that I squeeze

Hi guys, I’ve been having a lot of issue w tonsils stones lately. However, I noticed that they are not really coming from the tonsils, maybe a few, small ones since my crypts are really tiny.
But even the dentist said that my tonsils are fine and I shouldn’t be having. Lately, I noticed that when I cough in a certain way, kinda like gagging, they would come out but really really tiny ones, and a lot of them. Then I noticed that they are coming from this gap.
The stone in the picture is one I took it out from there and they are only open and visible like this when I force my throat to gag.
I know it sounds crazy but I’ve been trying to make experiments w that stone 😭. Like I wanted to see how to make the smell go away. So I dipped it in Listerine and it helped a bit but I could still smell it, then I tried salt and water and I was shocked. Odor completely vanished. However, im sure inside my mouth it doesn’t work in that way, as simple as submerging them in some liquid and letting it be.
So I’m here to ask, does anyone has any tips or suggestions on what to do or take. I know I can continue trying to cough and remove them manually but I was hoping for ways to stop them from forming.
Thanks 😁

Look at these litol tiny baby tonsil stones which I got out from my problematic right tonsil crypt LOL
A week ago, I got one out from this crypt using a qtip and I thought that was it, couldn't see anything anymore. Today I checked, and something was peeking.
Used a qtip, got one out again, BUT THERE WAS STILL SOMETHING PEEKING? Finally got my dental syringe, which after my attempt last week, did not work. But alas, today I figured out the "technique" AND TINY ONES KEPT COMING OUT OF THE CRYPT HAHA I probably swalloed some LOL
So how often should I do a maintenance cleaning of this crypt??

I get a lot of Lingual tonsil stones. Not the typical tonsil stones in the Palatine tonsils but tonsils behind the tongue. I can feel them stuck there and can never cough them up. Do lot of rinses, have good hygiene, im assuming the area is just conducive to trapping food. Anyone have any good options othet than surgery?

I dislodged a large tonsil stone, then a few days later I saw a smaller stone. Then that dislodged and a few days later I saw a larger stone.
Can they form in a few days or are these old stones that somehow move forward in the crypt after old stones are dislodged?

I have had recurring long term swollen submandibular glands for the past year or so. I had a lot of issues with strep and mono, and I think it left with me with enlarged crypts. I can occasionally get one or two large stones out, and the swelling decreases a lot. It would come back later on, not too long after, but wanted advice on this. What has everyone done for stubborn ones you can’t find. I was using a q tip and can’t find any! I know they’re there though!

I've had the stones for a few months now. I had a cough before and since then my throat hasn't been the same. So I noticed a stone I've been trying to get it out but my gag reflex doesn't help. And when I do try to poke it with a qtip my tongue gets in the way and I can't see anything. I've been gurgling with salty water but it seems as though it doesn't reach where it needs to reach.
I can't also get a water flosser because they're not that common in my country so they're very expensive.
Help!!!
Edit: I can also feel something lodged in my throat like around the neck area

Idk if this is tonsil stones but my throat area is hurting and my tongue is black
