One can only hope! It’s not like the democrats are necessarily in a position to make good on the opportunity again, especially if they try to reelect kamala. I’ve got no issue with her personally but she had VERY bad publicity.

Vance doesn't have the hold on Trump's cult that Trump has. He hasn't been building himself into that position. I figure the cult is going to turn on him and tear him apart unless Trump comes out strong supporting him, which I doubt he'll do.
6
u/Kat121 13h ago
I really think he chose Vance because he knew Vance wouldn’t have the balls to impose article 25 and take over. Vance has to hear the boos at his rallies and recognize how disliked he is, and knows that his only shot at presidency is taking it from Diaper Donny.
Yet he does nothing.

That is comedian Druski impersonating Erika Kirk. It is a parody of the Charlie Kirk funeral that took place 11 days after his death. IRL, she was visibly crying but there were a lot of those spark showers. It was weird.

Why do Americans have such high regard for their servicememmbers when theyve spent the last 50 years bombing children and invading nations?
America has only ever fought offensive wars since WW2
139
u/ChipRockets 21h ago
America first (and only). It's ingrained in them. Look at how much they hate their cops for how the police treat Americans, then look at how they revere their military despite how their military treat foreign civilians.
57
u/greg0rycarson 17h ago
I think those who dislike cops are largely the same faction within America who want to cut military spending. Abuse of power can look many different ways, lots of Americans are against any armed people uniform taking advantage of disenfranchised and/or defenseless persons.

We are the poster child of the military industrial complex. So many contracting jobs everywhere, most people work to satisfy the wants and desires of those making weapons, ammunition, and vehicles of war. As for the service members, it’s pretty sad. The poor join up, because the benefits are great. The rich decide to send us somewhere for reasons (oil, regime change, etc). We get there, and all we have is each other when everyone around us wants to kill us. So we do crazy heroic shit to save our brothers and sisters in arms. Those stories get glorified, the people eat it up, and more poor people join.
I’m a veteran. I’ve done things to save my brothers, and people have done things to save me. I love all of them to death, and I see every veteran as a member of my extended family. It’s a bunch of (usually) selfless warriors being directed by a rich dick.
2
u/Kumquat_conniption Free Palestine! 🕊️ FUCK ICE! ✖️🧊 7h ago
I think it stems from the few times the U.S. actually fought for something decent, like the Revolution, the Civil War, and World War II. But now it’s mostly wars of aggression and imperialism. My husband is a veteran from Somalia in the late ’90s, so I’m not saying this lightly, but the men who sign up for these wars shouldn’t be praised like they’re doing something noble. At this point it’s a job with good pay and benefits, not honorable service.
After decades of Middle East wars, all of them stemming from blowback for the shit the U.S. did, especially in Iran with the Shah, and we’re still acting like every deployment is heroic. Sure, there is plenty of propaganda and recruiters target teenagers, so the blame isn’t only on the guys signing up, (and is mostly on those with power) but I don’t think enlisting itself is honorable anymore.
I’m just glad my husband ended up becoming a fireman instead of staying in the military (or becoming a cop- no fucking way would we be together now if he did that). He still loves his time there and don't get me wrong, the shit he had to endure doing basic and as infantry (which I am not saying is worse than others, its just what I know) sounds so fucking miserable- like some of that training in the heat and the freezing cold- but some of it was an adventure too. Jungle training in Panama, going to Africa, etc. But he did it for himself; it was no "act of service." He wanted adventure. He was from a middle-class family (as do most soldiers- the idea that the majority of soldiers come from poor families and is their only option is a myth).
Anyway, I hope I did not cause offense but those are my thoughts. No way am I going to thank anyone for their service when they worked a job just like I did. No one goes around saying "thank you for working on your feet doing doubles as a bartender/waiter" (which is what I did at the age most sign up for enlistment).

u/Kumquat_conniption Free Palestine! 🕊️ FUCK ICE! ✖️🧊 7h ago
Oh and you had to do "heroic shit" to save your fellow soldiers because people were trying to defend themselves from getting killed by your "brothers and sisters." You were on their land, killing THEM. Maybe it was not so heroic after all?

It's a feature. Make the service members untouchable and people won't dare to critizise the military or it's operations.

This is one president that disgraces soldiers when he salutes.
3
u/fournameslater 19h ago
Isn’t there a thing about non-military people that shouldn’t be saluting military personnel? I thought it applied to Presidents too.
2
u/dgillz 17h ago
No. Biden, Obama and Clinton never served in the military and they regularly saluted during their terms in office. This is tradition, not a requirement.
FWIW, Reagan is the one who started this tradition. Prior to this Presidents typically did not salute back. However, it is required for the service members to salute the president because the president is, in fact, Commander in Chief of the military - a superior officer.

u/Poultron72 21h ago
Why doesn't he just decease? He's got about 3 years of breath left in him and then humanity will be able to say, "Well. THAT got interesting! Let's just rename everything to how it was before, and as a species forget it ever happened."
27

But i don't want to forget. And everyone else should not either. We need to remember and hold accountable all who played a part. Etch this shit in stone so future generations know what happened.

If you live to be 80, you will have lived through about 20 presidents, and had the opportunity to vote for, or against, 16 of them. To spend your days picking apart one of them, to the degree of how they walk really shows a level of pettiness and childishness, that has become a hallmark of the younger generation, liberal women, and much of Reddit. Go build something, and come back in two years and vote for your hero. That is, if the incoming caliphate allows Americans to vote by then.

I’m wondering if this is getting a little petty. Stuff like him nodding off or not walking perfectly straight feels like it pulls attention away from the genuinely awful things he’s doing. If this were anyone else, we wouldn’t post them “attempting to walk in a straight line,” and I’m not even sure this counts as a failed attempt. We don’t know if he was really trying to walk straight.
It’s been up for 9 hours, so most people who were going to see it already have. What I really want opinions on is whether posts like this - ones that aren’t much of a failed attempt and don’t highlight the serious harm coming from this administration - should stay. We do give some leeway for posts that show how bad things are, but this one feels borderline to me (although also kind of silly to take down now, so I am looking more for broad opinions on posts like this- this one can stay.)
If you think posts like this should stay, tell me why. I genuinely want to hear what regulars think. I don’t want to impose my own judgment on the subreddit unless it’s hate speech or something clearly over the line. I really do care about what the users want.
Edit: Seems I am in quite the minority, and we will keep allowing these. Thank you everyone for your feedback! It really did help me to see the value in posts like this.
