  • Any discussion regarding Moles/winners/results of previous seasons AND any discussion regarding "I think Contestant A makes it farther based on trailer footage" or similar must be properly wrapped in spoiler tags. Your comment will be removed if it is not properly tagged (and a LOT of people last season incorrectly tagged their spoilers).

Hey all,

A few weeks ago I made a post asking people to apply to an online game of The Mole, that me and a few of my friends will be running for charity. Since there is only one week left to apply I thought I would make one last post, for those of you who may not have seen the initial post.

It's completely free to participate. Each player chooses a charity to play for, and at the end of the game I will donate the amount of money earned to the charity of the winner's choice. On top of that, the rest of the money that isn't earned by either the mole or the winner will be redistributed amongst all players. This means that all the available money will go towards charity, and each charity will receive some of it. If you want to know more, and join the server, I have written down all the important information below.

Thoughts AMA! Greg here from Netflix's The Mole (2022). In honor of the 4-year anniversary, Let's Reflect

79 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm Greg. I was a contestant on Netflix's 2022 reboot of The Mole, which premiered four years ago on October 7, 2022.

I'll be popping in over the next 48 hours to answer questions, ask me anything about the game, the cast, reality TV, or life since the show.

I wrote a long reflection below in case you’re curious where my head is at four years later. Optional read but let’s get into the tea!

~~~~~
TL;DR: After 10+ years of auditioning, I booked The Mole: a dream come true that was also psychologically brutal. Four years later, I’m grateful, at peace, and done editing myself: loudly Jewish, gay, and witchy.
~~Reflection~~
This week, four years ago, Sandy flew out to Seattle so we could watch the premiere together. It was her first time visiting the city, and we spent the days leading up to it snapping glam shots of each other, stockpiling content for our inevitable social media fame. (So cringe lol.)
On the night of October 6, minutes before the first batch of episodes dropped, we sat at my apartment building's fire pit, savoring our last moments of the "before" — we were about to cross the threshold from TV watcher to TV character.
For me, it went deeper than wanting to be an influencer. Wanting to be on camera was baked into my Jewish soul, like challah on Shabbat.
From my community theater debut as a village boy in “Fiddler on the Roof,” to my Survivor-themed Bar Mitzvah (Outwit, Outlast, Out-Pray), where I made guests compete in elimination challenges.
From my ANTM-themed 18th birthday, to my college theses about the Real Housewives.
From TV-industry internships in New York and Los Angeles, to countless self-taped rants at the camera — my teenage brain bubbling over with Bad Girls Club and Laguna Beach reenactments.
I auditioned for countless shows and faced many rejections: a High School Musical competition show, 90 Day Fiancé, The Real World, Below Deck, and Amazon's dog version of The Amazing Race, The Pack — that one stung, because I trained my dog in agility for 12 weeks.
Then, after 10+ years of auditioning, manifesting, and daydreaming, it happened. Exactly 18 years after my Bar Mitzvah, I got the call that my spot on The Mole was almost a done deal.
Almost: because in reality TV, nothing is certain until you're standing in front of the camera, and even then you could be edited out.
I spent the final weeks preparing intensely: working out, packing my belongings into boxes, watching old seasons of The Mole and The Amazing Race Australia, taking notes in a Google Doc. I even studied the star charts for filming and did an Art of War–type analysis of zodiac signs.
And I meditated — deeper than I ever had. My mantra was "I surrender." I felt like I was on a roller coaster ticking upward. The casting team was optimistic, but it wasn't a done deal. I had to move through the world as if it was, knowing that if it fell through I'd be moving back in with my parents (I couldn't afford summer rent where I was living). I couldn't regret changing in preparation for something uncertain.
I surrendered. I made my body a limp noodle and released my grip on expectations. I would jump off the cliff and embrace whatever caught me. What else could I be describing but religion? Devotion to a higher power.
In June 2021, I boarded the empty plane to Sydney — it was still the pandemic, and we needed special government permission to fly there. I was vibrating higher than I ever had.
A quick note: this next part gets into the mental-health side of filming.
What truly happened inside me while filming, and what was done to me externally, will take time to explain. But multiple truths can exist: it was a dream come true, and it was hard.
Everyone says, "Go on Survivor, go on Big Brother." I think: if the cameras weren't there, would you actually enjoy what's happening? Waking up with a camera in your face, bugs, sunburn, gross food, injuries, don't get me started on dating shows. Filming The Mole was nothing like that.
Because of a COVID outbreak, the schedule built in extra time, sometimes days, even weeks between shoots. We had downtime in different cities across Australia, never woke up with cameras in our faces, and stayed in very nice hotels, each of us with our own suite.
We weren't sequestered in one location. If eliminated, we could remain in the country with a per diem, phones, and freedom to leave the hotel (though COVID had closed most indoor dining and attractions).
But there were very long stretches of isolation in hotel rooms we didn't have the keys to. If I walked out, I'd have no phone, wallet, or passport — nowhere to go, and I'd be locked out. Most meals were delivered; each day we could choose a walk or a supervised hotel-gym workout. With unpredictable schedules and no way to contact our handlers, meals and walks were sometimes late, rarely forgotten.
Sometimes the isolation felt like torture. Sometimes it felt liberating. My mantra was still "I surrender," and the uninterrupted time deepened my meditation. I brought myself to tears with gratitude, trusting I was part of something incredible.
I had to brainwash myself, plain and simple — it was the only way to commit fully to the game. And I was committing to something that could hurt me.
My heart chakra was wide open to an experience designed to heighten paranoia and suspicion and dark impulses for entertainment. My approach was as lighthearted as I could make it, but like the end of The Truman Show, I lived inside a delusion.
Waking up was painful, and I relied on the show's psychologist. After my elimination — my metaphoric ego death — she helped me remember it was only a game, and how I acted in a game isn't how I act in real life. I was being hard on myself; I could count my ugliest on-camera moments on two hands, and I was terrified the edit would define me.
For 18 months I tried to recover from main character syndrome, with no idea what would air. On October 7, 2022, I watched a different version of events than the one I'd agonized over for two years. The edit was kinder to me than I'd feared.
The influencer career I assumed would materialize? It never happened. Though I did get sent crystals and a candle — thank you — and thank you for the Cameo requests. I'm grateful for the post-show support. Pretty quickly, the fanfare died down, and it was time to move on.
Another year passed, and I watched Netflix reality controversies pop up. Around six months after airing, the disillusionment settles: post-show life is pretty much the same as pre-show, celebrity is the exception, and fame-expectations turn out to be scaffolded on clouds. When the dust settles, some former contestants feel like victims of something they signed up for.
I remember realizing I was the only cast member cast from a cold submission — I saw the flyer on Reddit, while everyone else had been recruited. I hadn't just signed up; I'd searched for it, manifested it, prayed for it.
I started seeing an art therapist. I listened to recordings of myself telling my best friend the full tea a week after I got home from Australia, transcribed them, and removed identifying details, just to understand in my own words what had happened. Then I wrote a novel based on that experience; I'm slowly working on the second draft.
Today, on the anniversary, it's important for me to be loudly and proudly Jewish. Visibly Jewish, and gay, and witchy. I showed all those sides while filming; most got edited out. Today I don't need to self-produce or edit out identifying details.
So what does it all mean? Surrendering to a TV show, to producers, to fame, to the camera — yes, it's a tool, a means to an end. But it's also a false G-d.
The peace I'm looking for now is in moving on. Always grateful that a pipe dream from when I was a little boy actually happened. I still believe in an optimistic view of humanness; that belief, and my open heart, can be my guide.
Discussion When social experiments are framed as a game show
1 Upvotes
There is a rather new category of reality tv. I am talking about betrayal game shows like „the traitors“ or „the mole“.
Usually, when you read up on these shows, the term „social experiment“ is mentioned once or twice. So you‘d think then people would understand, when they watch it, that they are watching a social experiment, right?
I have watched several of these shows and I found out today, that I wasn’t actually realizing, that I was watching a social experiment.
But today, something changed. We have a german tv show named „werewolves“ that I found today. And when I watched it, something about the interviews felt off. Every interview sounded extremely scripted. Some of them sounded like they were handed actual lines to say.
Now this is generally not unusual for reality tv. It’s known, that these interviews are cut together, that the questions they have to answer want to maintain a plot and that sometimes, the interviewers ask them to repeat what they told them to say. Interviews frame what the audience should focus on. That’s known.
But in this new series, the interviews sounded even more staged than that. And then I realized, that the people aren’t ever actually saying, what they feel or experience. And even if they say „i’m afraid“ they somehow say it in a very positive emotional way.
In other reality tv shows, the experience and the emotions are the focus of the interviews. They talk about how they are doing and sometimes even say what the environment of being filmed, having almost no privacy and no way to distract themselves, is hurting them.
In this series, none of that is mentioned. The psychological effects are simply not a topic.
Every reality tv format is kind of a social experiment. But the betrayal shows make it one where you can’t even really talk to anyone about it. In other reality tv formats you are able to talk about the situation you are in with other people. In this one, there are a lot of things that this experiment does to you, about which you can’t talk to anyone.
And all while the situation these people are in is drastic and potentially harmful, their psychological state is not even mentioned.
In the german show, the whole framing of the show actually also distracts from everything that could make people notice, that there is actually a social experiment happening.
the social experiment is called „game“ every single time
The people who are in it are always referred to as „players“
The interviews only show „strategic thinking“, no emotion
And I think, that the social experiment is actually quite dangerous and framing it as a game is therefore harmful.
I think, even if this side is not mentioned for the audience, there needs to be a very good psychological treatment for the participants.
I think you need:
tell people exactly what they are participating in and what the psychological consequences could be for them
Have a psyche pre-assessment
Regular or if needed sessions with an educated person
Aftercare
I don’t know if these shows already provide this. But I think they should.
All in all, I think these formats are really fun to watch. But what I am missing is that the social experiment is shown and that the people and their mental state is mentioned.
I don’t see the need to cancel these kinds of shows, but I feel the need that this is talked about. Because I think people can do what they want, but they should really be informed what they are entering, before they do it.
And I actually think: filming a social experiment, while doing everything to cover up the actual social experiment, should not be allowed.
And you‘d think that there are articles upon articles who warn people about this, right? Well I haven’t really found a lot. I have seen one article that generally criticises reality tv, and that mentions the psychological effects these betrayal game shows can have on the participants. I actually thought there would be more. And since there is not a lot out there, I am gonna throw a stone.
I expect that these questions will be discussed in the future. But right now there doesn’t seem to happen a lot of discussion about it.
I want people to be informed and cared for when they join experiments like these and that the consequences get mentioned for the audience.
Because otherwise, these series are framing a social experiment as a fun game.
Question We’re trying to replicate a Game Experience like The Traitors ⚔️ and The Mole 🕵️ for Group of 14 Players
1 Upvotes
Hey Faithfuls (and a couple traitors 👀)!
We’re trying to replicate an Immersive Game Experience for a group of 12-14 people but I would love to hear input from the Game Enthusiasts themselves… so I have a few questions to ask the group…
1. Are 4 nights too long? Or too short? Why or why not?
2. What concerns or questions would you have before you participated in something like this?
3. Would you be interested in something like this if it was with a group of people you only met online through Zoom?
4. What would make you feel safe participating in something like this?
5.Let’s say the experience included 5 days with all meals and game activities/challenges… and you could room solo or share a private room with your travel partner. How much would be too much to participate?
Old Seasons The mole prediction
6 Upvotes
First of all, no spoilers, I’m currently watching traitors and someone had said it’s because who know who the traitors that we think faithfuls should have figured it out by now and all
I came across the show mole where the audience don’t know who the mole is and are figuring it out with the players
My prediction for season 1 after watching 3 episodes is Joi, she has clearly been sabotaging but then it could be to throw us off as well😂
Hey all,
Soon, I'll be organizing my own The Mole game on discord, together with a few friends of mine. It's free to participate and I thought some of you might be interested in this as well. Each player chooses a charity to play for, and at the end of the game I will donate the amount of money earned to the charity of the winner's choice. On top of that, the rest of the money that isn't earned by either the mole or the winner will be redistributed amongst all players. Thoughts Season 2 was broken as hell
35 Upvotes
I really really loved season 1 of the Netflix revival, but is it a hot take to say the contestants broke the game so badly in season 2 by all pretending to be the mole that it wasn't even enjoyable to watch? They really need to alter the game mechanics in a big way for season 3 imo or else they shouldn't even bother. Apologies if people already talk about this topic a lot on this sub, I'm a new joiner.
Watched every episode since I was 11 back with Anderson Cooper. Multiple times. And now I have lights that add to the vibe as I’m watching on YouTube (thank you MoleKing!!!).
Kind of a shit post. But I’m having a blast
Edit to add : I have them as “warm white” or “amber” normally. But during my mole streams? I change them to green or red during the executions. It’s fun to pretend.
I’d love to play this game
Thoughts Is the Mole rigged? Spoiler
0 Upvotes
Okay, so in the season I just watched Greg is talking about how he has been thinking Kesi was the mole the whole time. And he has been selecting her for his quiz. The other contestants were all saying other people besides Kesi. Like each person was saying 1 of the other players. Even in his interview he stated that he got there by picking her. So he was gonna stick with it. Then he gets eliminated. Making me believe it couldn’t be Kesi. Turns out, it was!?! I think they intentionally eliminated him to make you believe Kesi wasn’t the mole. Hopefully this came out as a coherent rant. How do other people feel about this? Is there any legitimately to this theory? I feel like the show wanted Will and Joi at the end.
Media Made a Mole-style game that plays out over 5–10 days. Looking for people to fill a cohort.
I built a Mole-style game that plays over 5–10 days. One or two players in a cohort of 6–20 win by deceiving the rest while everyone else tries to ID them across the days.
The deception plays out over the whole run, not in one sitting. The suspicion you build on day 2 is what you're acting on by day 6, and the ID you lock in is the one you've been refining the whole time.
It's in playtest, so it's free and stuff breaks sometimes. I'm around to fix it when it does. No host narrating, no edited reveals. The cohort is the whole game.
If you want to play: https://peckingorder.ca You join with a magic link, no setup. Happy to answer mechanics questions in the comments.
