Other If another prequel happens, which characters do you predict will appear?

Personally I think it's gonna be set between Ballad and Sunrise. So my guesses are:

Snow (i wanna see him as gamemaker-possibly headgamemaker-and see his rise to presidency. I wonder who was his political rival? Also i bet he cane up with the ideas of arenas, victory tours, parades, cornucopias, quells etc. Also maybe show why in SOTR propaganda was used so much, maybe a earlier game went terribly?

Tigris- her story is absolutely not over (why else would Suzanne bring her back?) And the fact she wasn't in Sunrise is very suss. Also a interview when SOTR released seemed to hint we haven't seen the last of her. I wanna see how she became Tiger like, part of the rebellion and her fallout with Snow.

The Heavenesbees- whether it's Plutarch, Hilarius or another member, I DEFINITELY think we have more to see from them. Plutarch especially (how did he become a rebel and what is his connection to District 12?)

Mags- I found it interesting in SOTR that when Wiress and Mags are introduced we got a deep explanation of Wiress' games but little on Mags'. All she kept saying over and over again "my main goal was to protect my district partner" and that felt like a tease to me.

Dr Gaul- wanna see how she and Snow worked together

Clemensia- always felt Suzanne spared her in Ballad for a reason

Drusilla Sickle- SOTR mentioned she's been the D12 escort since the first quarter quell so I wonder if we'll see a younger Drusilla one day

The Covey- let us know why only Tam Amber and Clerk Carmine are the only ones from Ballad in Sunrise. Also Clerk's lost romance could be a tease for a future prequel.

Coin- honestly a Coin/D13 origin story is something I could totally see Suzanne doing

Other Finished The Hunger Games trilogy and came out thinking Gale was the most interesting character

That doesn't mean I think he's perfect, of course. He's controlling, stubborn, and self-righteous; can be incredibly dismissive of perspectives that clash with his own; and is extremely possessive of Katniss, but I think that's consistent with his angry personality. Gale is an angry, bitter, and deeply resentful person, and I think his anger is pretty much who he is. It makes him impulsive, uncompromising, and, in the end, downright cruel, but I don't think that makes him any less interesting as a character.

"Oh, but Peeta, Katniss, and other characters have been through worse things and didn't turn out like him" Okay, and? He is still a person who has been radicalized by the experience of living in a reality of extreme poverty and violence. It surprises me that the fandom is frequently so harsh towards him, as if he, individually, were a maniac, as if he had become that way in a vacuum, rather than as a result of the very circumstances the series criticizes. Gale's character is there to represent a cycle of violence, resentment, and oppression that other characters also reproduce, like several Hunger Games winners agreeing to a new edition with the children of the Capitol, something that even Katniss initially agreed to to avenge Prim's death. I can understand his violence and the way he directs his anger at the wrong people because, when it was time for others to extend him or the people of District 12 any sympathy or understanding, no one did. He genuinely never had the opportunity to see people outside his immediate circle as anything other than potential threats to his own well-being and the well-being of the people he loved. I can understand why he developed such an angry, violent, and impulsive personality, just as I can understand why Katniss, after everything she went through, doesn't want to cause any more deaths and destruction.

Narratively, Katniss, and especially Prim, exists to represent the consequences of this war on innocent people who have nothing to do with the power structures that oppress vulnerable individuals. Katniss is there to question who this revolution serves, while Gale is so dominated by his anger and the desire to end that structural oppression, which, in fact, could only be ended with the emancipation of the oppressed, that he comes to justify virtually everything he does as necessary for the greater good, believing that the ends justify the means. He was willing to kill and die for the cause. He refused to run away with Katniss, the woman he loved, because he didn't want to live in a state of alienation in the face of a possible revolution. This man saved the surviving population from the District 12 and took care of them. He was also one of the first to volunteer for the mission to rescue Peeta. He did all of this because he believed in the cause with everything he had.

Katniss never really wanted to be the face of the revolution. She always only wanted to protect herself and the people she loved. She repeatedly found herself pushed into a symbolic role she hadn't chosen, and she agreed to become the Mockingjay under considerable pressure. This, obviously, isn't a criticism of Katniss. Her reluctance makes perfect sense after everything she's endured. But Gale has a different relationship with resistance. He has a sense of community and a vision of a future beyond his immediate circle that Katniss never had, which actually gave him a cunning that Katniss also never had. Like, when they're in District 8, in the makeshift hospital for the wounded, Gale questions whether grouping all the wounded together in one place is a good idea, then the hospital is bombed by the Capitol, and he says he imagined that would happen because those severely injured people would be useless to the Capitol even if District 8 were retaken. He is extremely intelligent, pragmatic, and such a fierce critic of the Capitol that he understands exactly how it works, so much so that he become susceptible to reproducing its dehumanizing logic.

He reminds me of Eren from Attack on Titan in so many ways. I really like this archetype of the angry, resentful, rebellious character, completely outraged by the submissive role they play in the world they live. In dystopian stories, I think everyone likes to imagine themselves as the great revolutionary who would destroy the system, but in their daily lives, how many people actually feel indignant and willing to act against the injustices and oppressions that occur every day? Essentially no one, because these behaviors are normalized, historically and daily. How many people harbor such intense anger toward an oppressive system that it shapes who they are? I get why the fandom has a problem with Gale (especially in comparison to Peeta), who represents the complexities of this world and how an oppressed person, contrary to what we tend to imagine, won't always be an empathetic pacifist for understanding the effects of violence on an oppressed community, while Peeta is essentially a nice guy uwu golden retriever boyfriend who's obsessed with Katniss. Like, don't get me wrong, I like Peeta, but I think Gale is much more interesting as a character. And, for the Hunger Games universe, his instance is more realistic as an oppressed individual who ended up internalizing the values and behaviors of their oppressors.

Btw, although I don't even consider myself "Team Gale" because, after reading all three books, I genuinely think that the relationship between Peeta and Katniss has more depth, and I also think it's a huge disservice to reduce such a complex and interesting character as Gale to nothing more than the love interest who lost the main character in a love triangle, some people are just coping when you insist that Katniss was indifferent to him. Katniss gets jealous of Gale, like when Haymitch implies that something might be going on between him and Madge. She mentions several times how Gale knows her better than anyone and how she trusts him. She admits that if their roles were somehow reversed, if Gale had gone to the Hunger Games and had to ally himself with a girl, pretending to be in love with her, she would be driven mad with jealousy. She explicitly says that she felt she was cheating on Gale somehow by kissing Peeta. I don't think it's a stretch to say that, if Katniss had never gone to the Hunger Games, the two of them would have ended up together. Yes, their relationship reaches a point of no return after Prim's death, and by the end of the series, Katniss wants to distance herself from all the anger that Gale has and represents, but that doesn't mean there was no romantic tension between Katniss and Gale, especially before the 75th Games.

It's kind of sad to search for Gale's name in fandom spaces and only find people talking about the love triangle (especially on Tumblr) when I believe his character has much more to offer. Everyone seems so overly focused on downplaying the importance of the relationship between Gale and Katniss, saying it was merely "transactional", as if the relationship between Peeta and Katniss didn't begin as a pragmatic scheme to gain public sympathy in the Hunger Games. Katniss was pretty much forced to pretend to be in love with Peeta in order to obtain the necessary resources to survive and keep Peeta alive during the Hunger Games and, later, to avoid punishment from the Capitol after their suicide attempt. It's funny because people say that Gale was never that important to Katniss, and yet they feel the need to diminish the relationship between Gale and Katniss when, canonically, Katniss describes their bond in terms of belonging to one another. You don't have to interpret that as proof that she was destined to end up with him, but you certainly can't pretend that he meant nothing to her.

Narratively, I would have liked to have seen more of Gale. He disappears from Catching Fire after being whipped, and I would have liked to have seen a stronger reaction from him about Prim's death and his role in it in Mockingjay, but he himself said that Katniss would never forgive him and that he failed to protect her family, so that's pretty much it, I guess. He understood that his presence would cause Katniss pain forever and that there was nothing more he could do for her, that their friendship was over. Still, I wanted to know more about what happened to him besides him getting a job in District 2. I saw a comment that, instead of ending up single (as far as we know), he could have ended up with Madge. I totally see that, and I think it would be interesting. Imagine him being attracted to Madge while a part of him despises her because, wanting or not, she is part of the power structures of the Capitol, as her father was the mayor of District 12 (even though he knows that being angry with her is pointless and that she herself is not to blame for anything).

SOTR and Chaff

OK, but can we talk about the fact that in Catching Fire, Katniss refers to Chaff as "one of Haymitch's particular friends"..... and yet there is no mention of him in Sunrise at all?!

I actually thought for sure HE'D be one of Haymitch's mentors. The Victor of the 45th Games, a full year before Palladium Barker (the brother of one of Haymitch's opponents) won the title, and a mentor for five years, surely there could have been a moment when the two future drinking buddies meet? Chaff would have been at the absolutely minimum barely 20 by the time the 2nd Quarter Quell rolls around.

The 1st Quarter Quell would be the most compelling next book

I just need to speak a 1QQ prequel into existence, for a couple of reasons. Aside from the obvious kernels that Suzanne dropped in SOTR, seeing Panem scarcely a generation out from the rebellion would be super compelling.

  1. We have canon characters who we can tie back to that era. Really, two, both of them mentors: Mags (11th Games) and Woof (Games number unknown, though probably not too far behind Mags - sometime in the teens, perhaps?). They would be only a pair amidst two dozen Victors - really, 23 (enough to fill the entire body count of one arena), since Lucy Gray is missing and presumed dead.

  2. A 1st Quarter Quell book would give us an opportunity to see a Games that is completely clean from start to finish: 24 tributes go in, only one comes out. Every other Games we've seen has had either a different parameter or something go wrong to prevent this normally predictable input-output from occurring:

Ballad (10th): Only 14 tributes survived to go into the arena.

Sunrise (50th): Quarter Quell with twice the number of tributes.

HG (74th): Dual Victors

CF (75th): Six Survivors (No Victor).

  1. While most people want to see the Games from a Career perspective, and even have the Victor BE a Career (maybe even introducing the concept of trained tributes and how those Career camps in 1, 2 and 4 came to be), I think it would be really neat to see an outlier district win a Quell, as 12 did. It might be actually really funny to have the Victor be from District 9, since Collins likes to rag on it so much.

  2. Have the Quell be told from the perspective of multiple tributes, or even all of them, and those perspectives are erased as the tribute pool dwindles. There is fanfiction that actually does this, and it's super cool!

Most annoying/least favourite movie changes that people don't talk about?

Let's be honest, there are a lot of complaints about the movie changing things from the book. I couldn't tell you the amount of times I've heard people complaining about "The movies don't have Madge!" Like yeah I get it. It would've been great to have Madge as a character, but they can't keep as much stuff in for budgeting reasons.

Then there's also "They changed how Thresh dies, and completely changed the death order in Ballad!" Now don't get me wrong, I really think Circ and Teslee should have stayed so they could actually use the drones. It would've been really fun, but it's one of the most basic complaints I hear. And people really need to let go of how Thresh dies, sure it's a bit annoying, but it's not as big of a deal as people make it out to be.

Some for me would be how the wolves from the first movie don't look like the tributes, Peeta's amputee, Greasy Sae or the avoxes not being real characters, but they're not the one that probably gets mentioned the least that annoys me the most.

The main one for me that gets mentioned the least, is probably gonna need to be Delly Cartwright. She was honestly a nice addition to the movie for me and would've done an insanely better job at speaking to Peeta than Prim. I love how Haymitch and Katniss react to her saying that people liked Katniss

Second place is probably gonna be the Prep team and Portia just getting replaced by Cinna. Cinna is amazing, love him to death, but I really thought that the prep team were a nice addition to the book and should've made it to the movies.

Third is the really babied and more boring deaths to make the movies more accessible to younger ages. I understand why it happened, but it's just worse.

Anyways, what are your least favourite changes to the movie that are barely mentioned?

Other Ballad of songbirds and snakes

What is your honest opinion of the movies as an adaptation after reading the book? Any of them not necessarily just songbirds and snakes.

I finished the ballad of songbirds and snakes and then watched the movie a few days after and I feel like it’s one of the worse movie adaptations I’ve ever seen. Hot take probably but I’m curious if anyone else opinion.

Other Help for deluxe editon hunger games Spoiler

Hey everyone,

I need some advice because Scholastic's weird formatting choices are driving my bookish OCD absolutely crazy.

Right now, I own the 4-book Deluxe Box Set (the gorgeous hardcovers with the stenciled/sprayed edges). However, I also happen to own a separate, standalone deluxe copy of The Hunger Games. When I put them next to each other, the standalone copy is noticeably smaller—it’s thinner, shorter, and narrower than the exact same books that came inside the actual box set.

With Sunrise on the Reaping coming out, I am completely stuck on what to do. I know Scholastic is releasing a standalone Deluxe Edition for it, but I’m terrified it’s going to be the smaller size and completely mismatch my box set.

Should I just risk it and buy the standalone Sunrise on the Reaping Deluxe Edition when it drops, or should I bite the bullet and buy the brand new 5-book Deluxe Box Set just to guarantee they all perfectly match in size and fit inside the same slipcase?

Decan Highbottom predicting the rebellion in the Hubger Games Mockingjay

One of the lines in Ballad of songbirds and snakes that connects so well to the rebellion in HG Mockingjay

C. Snow talked to Dr. Gaul and Decan Highbottom. It was a conversation about Gaul&Highbottoms knowledge of Snow's and Lucy's kiss. Then, Decan Highbottom says something along the lines of: 'Well, what's the saying? It's only over when the mockingjay sings.' Before that, Gaul says something like 'too bad she won't live til the end of the day.' The others can't ask further questions because someone, Rhemus Doolittle, interrupts, saying that the boy from district 5 died during the night because of an asthma-attack and they'd have to take care of it.

We all know about the scene when Katniss sits at the Lake she and her dad used to go to back then, with her team, making the propos for the rebellion. She and Pollux see Mockinjays in the trees and Pollux whistles, which ends in a whistle chit-chat between Pollux and the MJ right after.

Then after a while Katniss remembers a song and sings it. Katniss is called the mockingjay and she sings. The song later (movie version) is used for the rebellions attack to the dam, followed by the whistle notes from rue in the wood district when they attack the peacekeepers. The capitol fights and fights but in the end, fails.

So its only over when the mockingjay sings(sung).

What do you think about the line from Highbottom? Where do you think does it come from? And what connection do you draw out of it?

Other I believe if there’s another book it’ll be about Plutarch

I’m currently rereading sunrise on the reaping, and I’ve been trying to think about what a next book could be about. Here’s what I’ve thought up lol

We know from the first trilogy the book covers progress throughout the series, the first bird dodging an arrow (death in games), the second a bird trapped in a ring (which I believe signifies the capital), and the final being the bird breaking free of that ring.

For TBOSBAS the bird and snake aren’t together, they are simply on the same branch and looking in opposite directions. I think it symbolizes how snow and Lucy Grey were so opposite, but bound together by the games (the thorny branch). The second book the snake and bird are one, and looking directly at each other. I might be wrong but I think this represents Plutarch being a rebel and from the capital. I believe a 3rd book would be maybe a double headed snake? It could take place around the 75th games, or leading up to the capital’s fall. The bird from the mockingjay would be the counterpart to the snake from this book. Idk!

But also what has stood out most about these two books is that the capital is way more fragile than it seems in the first trilogy. So, I don’t think it makes sense to be showing points of weakness like they have been, only to end the trilogy with another games POV.

Imagine how weird it would be to encounter a cat as a resident of District 13

It just occurred to me how bizarre the concept of Buttercup as a cat must have been for a District 13 resident.

Obviously they don’t have any pets. Does the book even mention any animals for agriculture?

So to then have this scraggly, cranky orange cat with them during the lockdown— probably the first time many of them were even aware there was a cat present.

I wonder if anyone was afraid of how unpredictable it was. I wonder what people thought of it.

I assume schools still taught about animals even though District 13 didn’t encounter them.

How do you think District 13 citizens reacted to Buttercup during the lockdown? And in general?

Other I think a book of short stories would be the PERFECT way to follow up sunrise on the reaping

I’ve been thinking a lot about how a potential third prequel book would work, and I came up with a lot of ideas for what it could focus on…

Then I read Neal Shusterman’s “Arc of a Scythe” series and his “Unwind” series, each of which have an entry that is entirely composed of short stories within the worlds of the respective series. These stories range from character origins to completely original ideas.

So what if the hunger games…just did that?

Suddenly, the possibilities for a third prequel book expand exponentially.

I’ve heard a lot of REALLY interesting ideas for a prequel, and they could ALL be included as a short story.

-The first quarter quell (presumably with Snow as game maker.) (If there is going to be a third prequel, this is the most likely scenario for what it will be)

-A Finnick story. Everyone likes Finnick, everyone cried when he died, and everyone wants to learn more about him and his games.

-Stories about other characters like Johanna, Plutarch or Effie.

-A story about the dark days and District 13 separating from Panem.

-A theory I like is that in the very first games, 13 hadn’t actually separated from Panem yet, and they participated in the very first Hunger Games and WON. If that’s the case, that could/would be explored here.

-Stories about all the other districts since we don’t know all too much about them. Maybe we could explore various games through their eyes?

-A story about Snow’s father and his relationship with Casca Highbottom and the actual creation of the games, or a story about Dr. Gaul and her continued impact on Snow.

-A story about the Covey and what life was like before and after the first rebellion

-A story about the founding of Panem and what up to it, and what led up to the first rebellion and the dark days.

-And Lastly, an Epilogue story about what comes of Panem and Katniss after the second rebellion.

What do you think? Would you prefer a third prequel book to focus fully on one story, or would you prefer to explore more characters and stories in less detail?

(Oh, and side note-Anyone who wants to read something like the Hunger Games needs to read the Arc of a Scythe series. Now’s a great time to get into it, since it’s getting its own prequel book this December.)

Edit: Beetee and Cinna stories would also be appreciated
