The L Word Discussion Is Jenny as calculated as I think?

I just finished a rewatch and maybe I’m just verryyy anti shane and jenny, but their whole relationship arc I just felt like Jenny was being manipulative. They get together right after the whole Nikki thing and suddenly Jenny’s just madly in love with Shane? Shane even pointed out the “crazy jenny act” she was putting on to see how far she could push

Sidenote on shane and jenny- I wish the writers would’ve put them together earlier in the series. I always felt like it was a possibility but after them repeatedly mentioning how much they valued each other’s friendship it just felt random. But then again all of season 6 felt random 😭

On Angus…

I’m sorry, I know I’ve been posting a lot here lately. It’s just that I’m rewatching and I need help processing. Do people really like Angus? I haven’t even gotten to the part where he does outwardly bad stuff yet and I already did the thing where you search his name to find older posts of people hating on him. All I could find was praise for their early relationship? but I’m soooo disappointed in him as a love interest. It feels like when it came to Kit’s sexuality the writers just threw a dart at a board (not a read on Isaac, I loved that storyline). First, I’m sorry they don’t look good visually together. Second, when Kit said I’m old enough to be your mother, he corrected her and said “my grandmother.” 🤮🤮 Not true in the least and crazy thing to say. Then when she told him about her menopause his response was to publicly serenade her about it. It just seems like he’s a thoroughly embarrassing man and the only reason the show runners made room in Kit’s heart to tolerate this kind of relationship is because she’s a black woman. I’m worried because it seems like Angus was originally meant to be some hot fling, boy toy, it’s-you’re-time-to-have-fun kinda thing but if that was their intention they failed.

Discussion Australian L Word fans, is Stan cutting things out?

Hiya! I've just started watching The L Word (late to the game, I know), and I'm mid-season 2 right now - having a love/hate relationship with the show lol - but I am wondering if anyone has noticed if Stan cuts scenes short?

I have noticed that streaming platforms will occasionally cut things out, like a line at the end of a scene here or there, or even cut transitions between scenes, and when watching my DVD copy I notice the difference. Does anyone know if Stan does this to L Word? Because sometimes I find the cut aways very jarring, or feel like I'm missing context for things that happen, like there was a line missing. Stan has ads now, so are they snipping bits here and there, or has The L Word always been a bit quirky in it's post-production style? 😅

Discussion Jenny discussion: I see her with compassion

I know a lot of us who love The L Word hate Jenny, but I don’t.
No I’m not here to talk about her trauma and give excuses for her behavior. I just wonder if other people feel the same way I do: she is a flawed human like people we meet in real life.
I LOVE all the women in the show. I just think Jenny feels much more real than they do at times because she gets swept up into her self destructive spirals and does things she regrets terribly later.

Bette too, seems like a real person you could meet in real life (I wish!).

When I say she’s my favorite character in conversation about the show, a groan is usually heard 😂 I get it. She has done irredeemable things (Sounder 🐕) but she’s also funny, relatable in some ways, feminist af, and loudly exactly herself.

What do you guys feel after all these years? I’ve rewatched probably 6 times.

Why did they make Bette evil?

In the beginning of season one, her character was way more nuanced. She had some major flaws, but so do all of the other characters. By season two, she progresses into an over the top villain, impossible to root for. First she cheats on Tina. Then she assaults Tina. Then when Tina doesn't forgive her right away she has the nerve to be angry with her. Right now I'm on episode five of season two where Bette is literally angry with Tina because she won a grant?! And accuses her of only applying for it to get back at her?! Does she not know how fucking grants work? You cannot convince me that the writers regard her the same way they do the other characters. At first some of this stuff felt justified. Like they were trying to communicate that Bette feels she's entitled to Tina. But now every single scene of Bette is just her being a major asshole in some way. It's clear the writers hate her.

I kind of understand from a writing perspective why something major had to happen in their relationship by the end of the season. In the very first episode they set up that their relationship is struggling in ways neither of them are willing to admit. But I think it should have been something other than Bette cheating. At the very least, they should have had Bette make some self-discoveries in the beginning of season two (why she cheated, why she has to control Tina).

CN: Emotionally abusive relationships and friendships / Tina’s need for autonomy in season 2

Hi!

I’m a non-binary butch lesbian (she/her) from Germany, and I have known The L Word since I was 15 (I’m turning 30 this year).

I haven’t watched the show in ages because of the BAZILLION things I f*cking hate about it, but I just realized that the part in season 2 that’s about Tina wanting her autonomy is just SOOOOO f*cking wholesome for me!!!!

Does anyone else feel that way, too?

Personally, I have never been in a relationship with someone resembling Bette being a total f*cking self-absorbed control freak and just all around fricking bossy — thank God!!! —, but my ex-girlfriend was abusive in other ways, too, and I’ve also had my share of emotionally abusive “friendships”.

So I guess that’s the reason why my subconscious just reminded me of that autonomy thing with Tina 💪🏻, which is deeply soothing for me.

I was also wondering if it’s common for people in their late 20’s to still struggle with sh*t like that.

At the end of the day, I just wish it was common for TV and movies to also portray emotionally abusive friendships (and not just romantic relationships) because I feel the need to feel less alone about that by seeing myself reflected in the cultural mirror.

Shitpost Had a sex dream about Bette now I’m sad

No spoilers please. I’m on season 2 where Bette is trying to get back with Tina and in my dream Bette and I were a flirty little duo and at one point she was sat in an audience next to Tina and I walked past and whispered in Bette’s ear, “I know your girlfriend is here but I want to fuck.” Followed by getting railed from behind by her over a freezer.

Woke up feeling like I’ve lost someone and something. Ha. You know that feeling when you finish a book but you’re not ready to let go of the characters yet?

Literally love this show. It’s cringey and quirky and funny. Despise Jenny.

Generic Replacement Music for Season 1

I need to talk to someone about this. I've been rewatching the series (piracy) and I read that when the series was moved to streaming a lot of the copyrighted music was replaced with generic music. Well, I'm on the season one finale and during the scene where Alice shows up at Dana's door telling her not to marry Tonya, the lyrics in the background are "may the light of heaven shine over you, may god bless you and give you peace." Just thought that was crazy. You would think they'd at least try to match the spirit of the original music.

Hot take - I love Gen Q

I’m 30, and JUST finished the OG L word for the first time ever (late to the game, I know) so I decided to watch Gen Q

Look I know there’s hate but damn I love this show. There’s something so humorous and playful about it. Bette, Alice, and Shane just have this undeniable fun relationship that genuinely makes me smile (just finished watching the Love Shack Karaoke scene lol) I also just finished the “so gay for you” book from Kate and Leisha and I was surprised they didn’t like the direction of the show.

Anyway, thoughts? lol

Discussion Imagine if Sarah Paulson starred on “The L Word” in 2005-2008

I think about this a lot, but in retrospect, Sarah Paulson would’ve been a great addition to the show in S2-5. Maybe, instead of the creepy camera guy, Sarah’s character could’ve moved in with Jenny and Shane. Or a love interest for Tina, Bette, or Helena. Or she could’ve been Alice’s sister (cause they kinda look alike in some of these photos).

I don’t know. This is just a fantasy of mine because I love Sarah Paulson and I think she’s hot. I need her to star in a lesbian show at some point. What are y’all thoughts?

The L Word Discussion Thoughts on Jenny NSFW Spoiler

A lot of people claim that bette had murdered Jenny in the last episode because of weird dialogue and kind of weird mannerism. And a lot of people hate on Jenny for being an asshole throughout season 5 and 6 specifically. But what if I had an explanation for her behaviour? I am specifically someone who likes Jenny and how complicated she was, and I see myself in her a LOT in earlier seasons. The big shift in season 4 wasn't that big in my opinion, it feels like she got louder, a bit more annoying and wrote an accurate book about EVERYTHING that happened from season 1. But, I wouldn't consider it a big big shift, in season 5, I feel like it shows how different she got. But a lot of people ignore the fact that she went through shit as well in season 5, she liked shane more than platonically def, and she saw her girlfriend at the time cheat on her with the girl she loved. Her reaction was definitely justified. She took that movie really seriously and according to Tina it looks amazing, so her actions in season 5 could be excused to some extent. Season 6 really shows the shitty side of her, and pretty sure so does the ends of season 5, but people forget that season 4-6 took place within exactly 2 years. And withing 2 years its enough to plan out an entire suicide and how to make people stop missing you. What I'm saying is, the reason Jenny got meaner and shittier the further the seasons went was because she was planning a suicide. She wanted everyone to get pushed away or hate her in someway, so when she does kill herself, no one would really miss her. Now to back that up, it's simply the entire tape she made for Bette and Tina at the end because they were leaving for New York. If she did hate everyone, why would she do all this to create an entire TAPE just to say goodbye? To her friends that would def visit or that she could visit in New York? And it wasn't just a small circle saying goodbye, it was EVERYONE in that tape. Including her ex boyfriend that tried to rape her before moving out, despite probably knowing what she had already went through as a kid. And if that tape wasn't a way to say goodbye, then why would she make her entire friend group watch it and not JUST the people who she supposedly made the tape for? I feel like people really ignore the shit Jenny went through in the show and undermine how bad it fucks up a person. If you watch the last episode again, especially her section of the tape after she was found, the voice of her recording in an empty room, it was so eerie, not just because she was dead. I thought I was reading too much into it but, in that tape she clearly was back to herself, before season 4, 5 and 6. You could legit also feel her energy was off in the video. As if she was thinking about something. Her smile in that video was sad and expectant as well. She sounded.. melancholic in a way. A lot of people who are planning a suicide start acting like assholes towards people around them, Jenny was planning death since 07, and she finally went along with it in 09, hence the tape, and how hopeless she seemed in later episodes. I mean come on, she was misgendering and being transphobic to max despite the fact that SHE was the one who paved the way for his transition and supported him the most through it, she also hid the tapes from Tina despite them getting closer together and her having no personal beef with Tina EVER. I feel like she also cracked multiple times during season 5, like when Tina tried to make her miss the meeting, and she showed up. Also, the way she hid the letter from Molly, it was like a selfish way of getting what she wanted, at least for a bit. I feel like everything in the show indicates that it was all on purpose. Jenny loved her friends a lot, this is shown when Jenny refuses to include the SheBar in her movie, and everywhere in the earlier seasons. Her being an asshole to them so they miss her less makes so much sense to me. Also, in the episode, while bette was already downstairs, you could hear a splash in the background if you listened closely, this splash is definitely jenny body slamming in the water. Which is basically a confirmation that bette couldn't have killed her, because bette was downstairs the time the splash came. I don't know if this theory makes sense for anyone but it really really does for me, I feel like everything I said matches up, too much for it to be JUST a coincidence.

Candace Jewel had the hots for Bette the moment they were introduced to each other by Yolanda. But Bette only noticed Candace when Slim Daddy said "well, I still think the two of you would ummm....Lord have mercy on me!" You can see it in Bette's eyes right here.

Do you think Bette would have still had an affair with Candace if it wasn't for this seed that Slim Daddy planted?

S4 E12 top tier episode

this has to be one of my favorite episodes, i’m on my first watch and i just finished s4. the music in this episode is so good, from start to finish. it’ll really get you in the feels. the scene with Shane and Paige showing her 1950s fantasy as they’re making love- it felt so tender and it’s a side of Shane we never get to see. I feel like Shane’s intimate scenes are always so passionate and fiery but this one felt so raw and nurturing. The directing in this episode really shines. Dana making an her first appearance back and speaking to Alice really put tears in my eyes (so heartbroken that they killed her). The ending scene of Tasha and Alice sitting together on the beach knowing it’s their last time together, ugh chefs kiss. Bette’s romantic gesture, Tina’s indirect declaration of love, Angus and Kit jamming to music together. All of it was so nicely done and just strikes a chord. Every character had a meaningful storyline on this episode where we really saw into how they were feeling, their emotions and point of view. Even Helena realizing she’s had enough of Kathryn, Papi accepting Kit needing to put herself back together and letting her go, Jenny accepting she’s fired from her movie. Really Shane and Bette’s plot lines were the highlights for me (they are my fav tho so i’m biased). All in all a great episode, any details i missed?

Does anybody else mentally split the show into two eras - with a Dana and a post-Dana era?

I feel I do. It isn't like there was a huge tonal shift (other then Seasons 4 & 5 having more goofy/lighthearted episodes)

But, when Dana left, something was lost, something broke and never got fixed and the dynamic never quiet felt the same way again.
The funny thing is i don't think Dana was the lynch-pin in the friend group. Hell, I wouldn't even say she was super core as say Alice, Bette and Shane where and her storylines really revolved around Alice more then anybody else.

But to me, there was this level of fun and cuteness and quirkiness with the Dana era. Multiple characters (Jenny, Dana, even Kit in a way) discovering themselves. That the later seasons didn't have.

Maybe it is just how my brain operates, but the first three seasons in my mind are more colourful, while the later are more sepia toned.

Anybody else feel this way.? (And how you described it?)

Discussion I now get why everyone hates Jenny

I'm watching for the first time and season 6 jenny is so unhinged and her personality changed so much from the other seasons. What is going on? She bipolar or something?
