Politics Could James Talarico break a Republican streak older than he is?

Paxton is a bag of shit with no redeeming qualities.
I'd love to hear any counterarguments.

Not a counter argument, I agree with you about Paxton, but through the countless ads and spam text messages supporting Talarico, the only thing I’ve learned about Talarico is that Paxton gave a sweetheart deal to a pedophile.
5
u/Reflexes-of-a-Tree 8h ago
At least that’s true, unlike 95% of what the other side is saying about Talarico.
If you’re looking for more information on what James stands for, I suggest searching YouTube for his interview with Jimmy Kimmel or for his sermon on separation of church and state.
1
u/selfdestruction9000 5h ago
I’ve researched them both; it just strikes me as odd that the countless ads and spam text messages don’t tell me anything about their candidate, just how terrible their opponent is. Everything is “vote for me because the other guy sucks” rather than “vote for me because I’ll do this.”
2
u/Known-nwonK 9h ago
I’ve seen the ads from Paxtons (ex)wife saying vote for the team and not the candidate, one from a republican politician not to vote Paxton, a few saying Talarico is weird, and even one from Talarico asking for money. May have seen one feom Paxton talking about the good he’s done, but I don’t remember it much. Haven’t seen anything about what Talarico will do for us

u/TheTangoFox 10h ago
If you voted R primary, you're getting the spam from the R candidates too.
Just, ya know, not much from the shitbag
0
u/selfdestruction9000 10h ago
I’m getting a ridiculous amount of spam from both sides, and neither say anything about their candidate, just about how the other guy is terrible.

Paxton is an objectively bad candidate and the only thing any of the Republicans in Texas seem to be running on are wedge social issues. They can't run on their record of improving things here and for sure don't want to remind non-MAGA people that they will do whatever Trump says. Don't forget, Cornyn authored a bill to rename a Texas highway after Trump just before he endorsed Paxton. Cornyn wasn't high and mighty, he was just as willing to kiss the ring.

Can you not? Every vote is needed and we gain nothing by criticizing voters who are planning to show up for our candidate. I literally don't give a shit who someone voted for last time, if they're voting for Talarico I applaud them.

u/AtomicSymphonic_2nd 18h ago
Be nice.
Right-leaning moderates can have full faith and trust that progress in society is inevitable. They just would like it to come slowly, with time to adapt to it.
They aren’t refusing progress as a whole like right-wing folks are.

Independent doesn’t mean you haven’t chosen a side. Politics is not a 2 sided coin. It’s a spectrum. A lot of libertarians are socially liberal, but they just believe government should have a smaller role in the economy. They align a lot with progressives on reigning in war powers, releasing the Epstein files, legalizing weed, and generally advocates for people’s privacy. Their economic ideas of letting the free market decide a lot things for us is bonkers to me and doesn’t translate well to reality we are living in now. There are many left leaning independents as well who believe the Democratic Party does not represent them, mainly applied to leadership. Some of them align more with Mamdani, AOC, and Angie Nixons of the party, but with party leadership actively (or passively) working against more progressive candidates, who can blame someone for feeling like they’re not being represented?

Tell me you are ultra left without telling me you are ultra left lol.
1
u/Fickle_Finger2974 18h ago
In this country and state? Absolutely. Wanting our tax dollars to cover healthcare, education, and social services makes you ultra left
1
u/AtomicSymphonic_2nd 17h ago
In the United States? Yes. Social democracy is very much classified as left-wing around here.
0
u/ExBig4CPA2025 18h ago
Not going to argue politics, but sorry buddy that’s not going to happen in this country any time soon.
2
u/Fickle_Finger2974 18h ago
And that right there is exactly the problem. “You want normal, reasonable things for our country. Ha good luck you fucking communist”
3
u/StupidSexyAlisson 17h ago
It's not that. I probably have the same politics as you but you have to recognize how deep in the shitter the country is for seeking so many social programs. 1 election cycle or candidate isn't going to do it. James is that baby step in the right direction.
-1
u/ExBig4CPA2025 17h ago
Again not going to argue politics, but I think respect goes a long way everywhere. The comments that you made in this thread doesn’t do any justice for the left wing party.

Dude be nice. I’m sure there are things in your past you’ve done wrong - and learned from, grown from, to be the better person you are today.

Anyone who is an “independent” is not someone capable of learning.

Judging someone's entire person based on a few words, or in this case a single word, seems kind of harsh no?
For example if I were to do the same, and base my take on you from solely your one sentence: you seem very negative, close minded, and anti-social. But I don't truly think that's who you are as an entire person. I think you're probably quite nice and level-headed, but that the mid-terms have us all a little overexcited.
1
u/aggierogue3 17h ago
People with these different opinions exist. If anything we should be very welcoming to more moderate conservatives in hopes they take the place of what we have today. Then the middle can shift back to what I would perceive as a more “normal” middle.

I try not to hate, but Paxton and Cruz need to be gone. FYI: I'm a RINO. 30+ years of GOP. Some people it just doesn't matter because they are wasting my money

u/slothaccountant 19h ago
Maybe but ones things for sure. No matter who wins republicans will cry about cheating and blame democrats for everything thats wrong in a republican led state.
3
u/2ManyCooksInTheKitch 14h ago
For sure. The amount of lawsuits they'll file the day after election day is going to be hilarious. They'll do anything to get the election results tossed out

I hope he can, but if he cant, we need to admit that running polite christian white boys that democrats think republicans find pallatable when they move to the right while campsigning isnt the answer and I want to see the most radical queer bipoc run and at least see how they would do.

u/GuyanaFlavor-Aid 18h ago
When did Talarico "move to the right" exactly?
3
-14
u/space_manatee 18h ago
Trans issues
5
u/GuyanaFlavor-Aid 18h ago
In what way? By denying the Paxton campaigns lies that he supports surgery for trans minors?
-4
u/space_manatee 18h ago
He gains nothing from this and it throws kids under the bus. He only plays into their hands that this is a real issue.

Show me where trans kids in sports pose a safety issue or is unfair.

You show me. You’re the one upset about Talarico. That’s the only time Talarico is against it in this huge “reversal” of his. So if they aren’t a danger and it’s not unfair, he’s not against it and you’re tilting at windmills.

Why not if it shuts down culture warriors? He was probably silly to think those on the correct side of the issue would actually be smart enough to listen to the words he used, but c’est la vie.

What is Allred? What is Beto? At a certain point you just have to point to the Republicans and admit they have no morals and will vote for corrupt candidates and pedos.
2
u/space_manatee 16h ago
Exactly my point. I usually hear it from well meaning liberals that "we need a guy that republicans can digest" but what if the way out of this mess is a candidate that can speak authentically and inspire the non-voting majority to get out to the polls for a change. Something like an Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan or even Zohran Mamdani in New york (though thats a very different situation).
We dont win texas by siphoning off a couple republican voters that vote as a block. They arent driven by policies but by group think and an authoritarian mindset. They have very different values than the majority of people and this is the part those well meaning liberals miss: conservatives dont think like them. They want to win. They dont care about policies other than whatever Reagan poisoned the well with on the maxim of "government bad"
1
u/GuyanaFlavor-Aid 10h ago
what if the way out of this mess is a candidate that can speak authentically and inspire the non-voting majority to get out to the polls for a change.
That's exactly what Talarico is doing. He hasn't changed his position on trans people or athletes, he's just double-speaking here on Faux News because Texas PAC and their boy Paxton have tried to make such an issue out of his support for trans people and run ads like from "concerned Texas mom Miriam" who claim he's trying to prosecute parents for not letting their trans kids transition surgically when all he ever said was that parents not supporting their trans kids was abusive. They're lying and saying he wants to prosecute parents who won't do gender surgery for minors, he has to combat that in some way on Faux News during an interview.
You are the perfect example of "perfect is the enemy of good" by highlighting this bullshit, and by doing what you're doing here in this thread you are literally helping Paxton whether you realize it or not.
1
u/space_manatee 10h ago
If I didnt want the ability to call out things I dont like, id be a republican. Im not saying talarico isnt a good candidate. Honestly, hes the type of person youd want as a senator.
That being said, im not saying throw the baby out with the bathwater. Obviously going to vote for him and voted for him in the primary.
-1
u/welsalex 18h ago
No offense, but they would do poorly. As you know, the culture war focus from the right is primarily about Trans kids, so therefore they wouldn't do well at all.
2
u/space_manatee 18h ago
Maybe. Or maybe we'd find out those things arent as important as the liberal establishment thinks they are because theyre so out of touch with how conservatives think.

Don't forget all the other positions on the ballot which are equally are arguably even MORE important than this race. Lt. Governor, Railroad Commissioner, etc. Research and vote for all (hint: you're not going to find much of a platform on any R in any race beyond bs buzzwords)

u/_clandescient Austin 9h ago
Honestly I kinda hate these kind of articles, because I don’t want one single person to get lazy and complacent and say “Nah, he’s got it on lock. I don’t have to go vote for him.” I know it’s tinfoil hat shit but it almost seems like a psy-op to serve exactly that purpose. I’m always keeping the mindset that dems don’t stand a chance until proven otherwise. Nothing is guaranteed. Especially not with all the rigging bullshit. Go vote and take two friends with you.

If you don’t want to trust him, take a look at how Ossoff and Warnock in Georgia have been doing.
Neither of them are extreme liberals, and both are still in the Democratic Party.
There’s no more reason to believe Talarico will suddenly “reverse” himself if he’s elected to office.
He’ll be more like WV’s Joe Manchin, if anything.
