SUGGESTING [Suggesting] Sweetpea

I may be biased because I'm a huge fan of Ella Purnell (Fallout, Yellowjackets) but I have to say even objectively that Sweetpea is a great show.

So far it only has one season that consisted of 6 episodes (standard for a British series) but it's really great. Season 2 is coming late 2026/early 2027. A date hasn't been set but it's done filming and is 100% coming.

I won't give anything away but basically a meek, shy girl named Rhiannon decides she's done taking everyone's shit and starts standing up for herself in a big way while trying to balance other aspects of her life and suspicions of the people around her that she's taken a turn for the OMG. Nothing further. I don't want to spoil anything, but if you've got some time I highly recommend giving it a chance.

I loved this show and it's such a crazy ride. I don't relate to the choices she made, but I felt seen as an "invisible" middle-aged woman who was bullied at school. You build a life where you don't want to be noticed, because you used to stand out in a bad way. And then it just gets too much and something has to change.

I also love Ella Purnell & thought Sweetpea was excellent. Also check out Sweetbitter, if you haven't yet. She's incredible in that.

They are so good my mom got me the set for Christmas and I burned thru them at work and fairly short time. The character development is amazing! Ella Purnell is so perfect and Rhiannon’s character is so beautifully imperfect I was surprised to hear she was the one cast in the show although I loved her in Fallout. I’m a huge Yellowjackets fan but her character wasn’t my favorite honestly but I love her now. Hope they bust out some more seasons of the show and we don’t have to wait literal years for its completion! I hope you love them!!

I only have one issue with the show, and it hasn’t come to pass yet.

In the books, she’s a ruthless psychopath. Just evil. In the show, she’s a sociopath, which is fine because watching a show about a psychopath would be boring for the non-readers. There needs to be an element of humanity to cling to.

My issue is I hope they don’t redeem her character. She should continue down her trajectory until she’s as devoid of all humanity like her book counterpart. It’s a common trope nowadays where any lady-villain gets redeemed and sympathized with in near every show or movie. “Send Help”, “Ratchet”, even “Bring her back” gave her a semi-sympathetic ending.

Some people are just villains and no matter what their traumas are, they’re Evil.

So I like the start, and I’m looking forward to season 2, but I hope they don’t somehow make her this tragic figure where everything is everyone else’s fault, and “oooh she would’ve been this lovely lad if it weren’t for the world around her.” Rubbish. She damn near had an orgasm on her first kill.

I thought I'd like it more than I did, I didn't really get into it. I feel like Obituary does the concept better
