no but genuinely does the voice spawn when they realise they're gay or...
130
u/Fuzzy-Manner8308 9h ago
it originally formed as a way for gay people to spot each other without straight people knowing theyre gay.
now its just when a gay person spends a lot of time in gay circles, they naturally adapt the voice.
ive seen a lot of gay people who might be gay but really do not have "the voice" because they just arent in gay spaces that much56
u/PiningForAnApple 8h ago
Wym straight people wouldn't know? The voice is obvious to everyone
64
u/rinontheinternet 8h ago
It’s almost like.. over time they became more obvious because gay people…. Were legally allowed to exist?
9
u/PiningForAnApple 8h ago
The dude is saying gay people used a feminine voice so straight people wouldn't notice them. Where is the logic in that.
And another thing stop with these seemingly rhetorical questions with a million ellipsis. I see this shit all over reddit it's so cringy. It doesn't make your point any better.

u/Jesus-lover-24-7 OLD 6h ago
The logic is that it worked. In the 60s, it was not obvious. The voice was slightly more subtle, usually, but people were a lot more ignorant. Although with your comment, we are reminded ignorance persists.

u/StrategyPuzzled7332 7h ago
It didn’t sound the same as now it’s started as a softer tone rather than a high pitch to silently signal but still have enough deniability if you were being accused and it would work since humans have so much social range. It could also be a form of finding a mate and since similar speech patterns in women do that it was adopted. And dialects often evolve around the groups you are in which in this case would be other gay men and women. (This is only if you actually wanted to know how it came about)

Holy shit gay has an accent? I always just thought it was a tv thing. None of my gay friends speak like that
4
u/Shady-777 18 4h ago
Wonder what lesbian accents may sound like
3
u/Eena-Rin OLD 4h ago
Knowing what little I do about the lesbian community, an accent might help them bloody locate one another (I've heard it's a struggle)

u/Old_Perception_7335 5h ago
completely unfactual it is naturally occurring and has nothing to do with knowing other gays. i myself am an example. i spoke like this since i was a child. never knew another gay person til i was 15. never saw one on tv til jack from will & grace. this is an urban legend.

u/WarriorCats_4Life 14 9h ago
Yeah, I’m wondering that too. I mean obviously it’s not just like poof! my voice changed, but still
2
u/thelittleone4242 5h ago
So funny enough, I think it started sometime recently, but it mainly happens for me when I’m like energetic or my voice is just higher for one reason or another. I personally don’t want the voice, but I found that when I speak at certain times it happens
2
u/OOGIEBOOGIEMANEEEEEE 8h ago
so as a straight man you have to perform more masculine its like guy code and part of that is being no homo so when you are gay you can get past that and express yourself more and be more open with how you present your masculinity and femininity and it shouldnt be a gay thing more men should be open with both sides of themself and be free from the boundaries of "being a man"
-11
u/Hippo_gooner67 9h ago
It’s because they typically spend time around women and just talk like them.

u/RareShip7315 9h ago
Objectively the first one is a fair question. As for the others it suggests that gays put on a performance b/c that's what they think gays do and as a result no gay is really being themselves
10
u/AdAdvanced8522 16 9h ago
Its a feminine presenting gay man used a higher pitched voice nothing else. Its just a queer person presenting queerly
1
u/Give-cookies 17 8h ago
I wouldn’t say queerly exactly, that implies it’s the default for gay men which it isn’t.
1
u/liliputian87 1h ago
As a gay man I can confirm we do put on the voice a bit. Of course we do. We want people to know we're gay. Why wouldn't we?
It's no different than straight bros who put on their straight bro voice.
1
u/Savings-Pie176 5h ago
It is a performance in the same way that all ways of expressing gender and sexuality are performance.
17
u/No-Consequence-6713 19 9h ago
I don’t think asking ourselves why homosexuality exists in nature and in society is a particularly bad conversation to have. The question could’ve been worded a little better, though it’s only trying to fill in the blanks for what you already typed
As for the gay voice? It’s an actual phenomenon. I don’t really see the area of offense there
I think the actual “outrage” here is how you began to type a (what you thought to be) provocative statement into Google and screenshot what is automatically filled in by a machine, and held it up like some undeniable evidence of… what? Homophobia? I’m an openly pansexual man and I see nothing wrong with this.

I feel like "why do gay people" as a prompt is always going to bring up searches like that, most people who don't think this way don't question "why gay people" (as a whole) do anything.

u/Background_Music5926 6h ago
No offense to gay people but this is true, it’s like an accent they have when they hang with girls a lot.

If you're interested in why gay people (particularly gay men) talk the way they do, I recommend watching Do I Sound Gay by David Thorpe. I had to watch it for a class last year, and found it interesting

u/_LemonySnicket 9h ago
"why do gay people do the voice"?? if you're a feminine presenting gay man that can come out in all sorts of ways, including a higher pitched voice.
17
u/Rich_Arrival795 9h ago
not just a higher pitched voice tho, the really zesty one. Never understand it.
0
u/the-clock-enthusiast 14 9h ago
its mostly used in a mocking way in reference to the 1900s movies that made that the stereotype . 99% of gay people don't actually sound like that
4
u/Rich_Arrival795 9h ago
yea I've actually heard two people with it, one I know isn't gay and the other idk about. So not really sure if it's actually a gay people thing or just people using a zesty voice for no reason
2
u/SarcastikBastard 9h ago
bro said 1900s movies... mf take that shit back
1
u/the-clock-enthusiast 14 8h ago
were there not movies in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s that spread the stereotype of the "gay accent"
1
u/_LemonySnicket 8h ago
i dont believe so. i think its just seeing yourself more feminine youll naturally start changing your voice, appearance, behavior. this only goes for feminine gay men though
1
u/Old_Perception_7335 5h ago
they (we) do not do it on purpose or to mock anything or sound like other gays or imitate movies. it is a naturally occurring affect that the homosexual man develops.
2
u/the-clock-enthusiast 14 5h ago
you guys really just . develop that?
damn. i've been queer for most of my life (transmasc lesboy) and been in many circles, youre the first to tell me something like that, though youre probably also the first gay man to testify who isnt like a teenager
1
u/_LemonySnicket 5h ago
I don't think it's just random development, you see yourself more feminine so you'll subconsciously act more feminine, including in your voice
1
u/Old_Perception_7335 4h ago
yes it develops naturally. i spoke like his before i ever met another gay person or even saw one on tv or in a movie. i was a child who spoke like a gay child.
1
u/_LemonySnicket 8h ago
zesty is a pretty offensive way to describe it. let me try to describe it more simply.
the more you feel feminine in your own skin, the more you'll project that with your style, voice, etc. some people don't even realize they're doing it.
3
u/Rich_Arrival795 7h ago
sorry, didn't mean zesty in a bad way. Just felt like an appropriate term
1
u/Choice_Decision_2533 6h ago
Camp is the word you are searching for. It refers to the behaviour that people traditionally associated with being 'gay' or 'fruity' or 'zesty'. There are gay people who are camp, there are straight people who are camp etc.
1
1
u/Old_Perception_7335 5h ago
effeminate is actually the correct term. camp is a descriptor for like...bad comedy that knows it's bad, it's winky. gay people are not "camp."
2
u/_Joeythegoat_ 18 9h ago
“why do gay people exist” 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Why do they tho?
2
u/No_Cantaloupe2765 2h ago
As a mildly gay person and technically still a teenager I have never really got the fay voice other than maybe to seem feminine, I like a man's voice and a woman's voice but I personally am not a fan of the awkward in between
1
u/pigintheclown 2h ago
I always saw the guy voice/gay mannerisms as a code to see eachother. Like, I could be talking normally to a guy and he slips a lil of the 💁 so then I do that too until we both nod and continue our conversation as if nothing ever happened (I am a lesbian) I also know gay guys who just talk like that all the time, not only with gay ppl. No idea, but I think it's cute

It really fascinates me. I’m not really sure when I developed it and it isn’t the strongest thing ever but spend enough time around me and you’ll hear it, especially if I get excited about something
