Novel Mr Smith's Unfortunate Predicament: A tale of rampant capitalism, dysfunctional secret policemen, extraordinary rendition, bizarre medical experiments, life support, interrogation, and a pig.
Smith was an ordinary, conscientious engineer in a large company until aggressive investors took over his firm and trashed his life’s work, all in the pursuit of billable hours.
You might have experienced something similar. But you probably haven’t been offered, or accepted, a highly lucrative, but illegal, opportunity by an old client. You are also unlikely to have been extracted from your workplace by the secret police who have convinced themselves that you are a major-league spy. And you will most certainly not have woken up one day, as Smith did, to find yourself trapped in a bizarre experiment in life support and deep interrogation – at least, not this version.
This book does not ‘do’ political correctness. The humour is dark. Your HR department would not approve. There are so many questions, including: Why are the fitter-looking rough sleepers disappearing? Why are the Universities, … OK, … Polytechnics, almost empty? What does HSE have to do with it? Why do dogs need internal colostomy bags? What is the Purchasing Manager really up to? Why do the least-likeable people always walk away with all of the money? And what do pigs have to do with it all?
Some questions are answered but, as in life, there are some absurd explanations, many expletives, inexplicable inconsistencies and tiresome ambiguities along the way. And. Some troubling unknowns will have to remain unknown. Until the next book in the series.
