Lol I thought doom loop meant it was spiraling into depression like Marvin the paranoid android.

When's the last time you read a positive take on martians? It's always "invasion" this or "massacre" that. People are very racist about martians. We are out to get him.

Stranger in a Strange Land had ascended Martians who helped an orphan. The next one to come to mind is A. E. van Vogt's Vault of the Beast, where the long-gone Martians are at least sensible. (How do you factor the Ultimate Prime?)

Stranger in a Strange Land had the same Martians destroy the 5th terrestrial planet in the solar system out of paranoia (resulting in the asteroid belt), and sent said orphan they raised to scout Earth to see if they needed to do the same to us.

A. E. Van Vogt?  Now’s here’s a fella that knows his hard SF.

The Martian Manhunter was pretty good, at least one segment of his population had a wonderful civilization shame about the genocidal conquering other half.

There also the Martians of Zim that turned their planet into a giant spaceship, and worked to extinction in the process, simply because it was such a cool idea.

Sort of thier own AI then huh?

u/OBDreams 3h ago

The John Carter of mars series paints martians as similar to humans in morality.

Colonel Kassad in Hyperion was Martian. Savior of all

And me, with a terrible pain in all the diodes down my left side.

He's asked for them to be replaced but no one ever listens

u/Flabbergasted98 9h ago

No but this might be how they calculated the answer down to 42.

No fucking way did they not know this would happen after they witnessed how algorithms killed journalism and adjacent industries.

u/atehrani 7h ago

Right? This was very obvious at the start, everyone turned a blind eye for $$$

Now it’s a problem because it’s eating their lunch

Love how there are endless stories from these companies about how terrible this technology could be now but we should continue to let it prop up the entire market.

Maybe we’ll see a serious upending of the capitalist world order by it cannibalizing itself.

"We may be facing an inevitable culling by billions of killbots, unless we do something. Anyways, plans are on track for our new killbot manufacturing plant..."

Some of you may die, but’s that a sacrifice I am willing to make

It’s the building of the reason they will abandon it here soon and save stock prices.

The bottom of the article missed one little point.

Now we have AI generated websites which are just turning into blog spam. Finding help on the Internet used to be a whole bunch of forums. Now, if you just search for something in Google, it's an AI Answer followed by a list of SEO spam AI generated blog sites which just don't give you much info.

It's really frustrating and is part of why the Internet feels like it has lost the soul it had.

That and the fact that everything became a video. Videos are helpful but well written help guides are essential.

u/brightfutureman 1h ago

Yeah, well. Can we just build our own internet … with blackjack and hookers?

4

u/OBDreams 3h ago

The "answers" are not true or have nothing to do with what I asked more and more it seems.

23

u/MrStu 8h ago

This is like watching someone tell you how terrible a cake is, as they put another spoonful in their mouth.

Bruh im just big boned.

Just let the whole thing implode at this point. Every single AI company is losing money but over-evaluated. They’ve literally reached the end of internet for data scrounging and are about to start consuming their own bullshit data, so the accuracy is going to suffer. Each and every one of them keeps threatening existential societal collapse and asking for legislation while doing nothing meaningful to prevent it.

It’s a scam. They want strict regulation put in place so they can blame the tech limitations on it rather than let the world see that it’s just a bunch of resource-hungry neural networks eating and shitting themselves.

Just how far is your head buried up your ass?

They’ve reached the end of internet data?  Do you have any clue how they are being trained at the moment?  They aren’t trolling the internet for crumbs.

10

u/Ottiline 4h ago

Sorry - did you think they were buying old books in bulk and wrecking them in the process of scanning them because there was just too much usable internet data for them to digest? They've been up on their heels trying to avoid cannibalizing their own output for months. They're LITERALLY shitting where they eat.

13

u/absentmindedjwc 4h ago

There's a reason all these companies are buying up out-of-print books by the truckload, scanning them in, and then destroying them.. they don't trust scraping the web anymore. There are so much bot traffic now that training AI off of scraped data is starting to become more and more toxic.

There's a term for this: Model Collapse

As time goes on, and more versions are trained on more AI slop-content (to varying levels of 'slop'-iness based on the complexity of the model that generated that content), you start to see significant diminishing returns at best.. and at worse, it pollutes the entire model with significantly more hallucinations and errors.

I know people in the LLM industry, bud.

u/Suitable-Swimmer989 5h ago

And my dad works at Nintendo!

4

u/ouchmythumbs 4h ago

My dad's a pretty big wheel down at the cracker factory.

7

u/Albondip 8h ago

Windows: "Amateurs..."

7

u/Over-Dragonfruit5939 9h ago

Now who could’ve predicted the obvious… of course no one wants to make quality content when it gets stolen and they’re not credited or paid for it.

4

u/beders 5h ago

More marketing BS.
Microsoft, are you really telling us you don’t know the outbound traffic of your agents?
That would be gross neglect.

8

u/OBDreams 3h ago

I'm evil to feel this way I know, but I want the internet to be destroyed. I want it so destroyed that we can't build a new one ever.

7

u/debacol 2h ago

If we could destroy all social media but keep the internet for important infrastructure use, Id be down.

2

u/Swineservant 6h ago

Just unplug it before it gets broken(er)...

2

u/IndividualHouse8628 2h ago

I like the part where it explains what a doom loop is

2

u/SilverCarbon 1h ago

The article already appeared on The Verge and New York Times. Ironically the website has AI text according to Pangram with the telltale subtitles. So even that website is guilty of it.

2

u/theirongiant74 24m ago

Honestly a dead internet would kill advertising and lead to people finding smaller trusted communities rather than the handful of behemoths that rule it now. A return to the internet of 2010 would be magic.

4

u/timmy166 5h ago

I’ve been saying dead internet theory for the past decade… email spam, chatbots, robocallers and no one on the internet knows you’re a dog

1

u/time-lord 1h ago

Woof woof. Arf, woof woooooof woof. Bark bark!

1

u/StaticBroom 1h ago

I’m 85% sure that’s not a dog.

2

u/WeowDystopia 4h ago

WE CANT STOP DEVELOPING AI, HEEEELP!

1

u/Run_Rabbit5 2h ago

How many apocalyptic events do you think AI will perpetrate before we decide to unplug it?

1

u/bouncyrubbersoul 1h ago

The web’s initial enormous value was greatly diminished by paywalls, horrendous advertising, and the video-ification of nearly everything in order to once again force you to watch an ad. Now AI is 100% undercutting that and making all of it irrelevant. How this evolved is not yet set in stone. Will the providers be successful? Will they succumb to advertising based models? AI- payola? Oh god how bad it might get.

Doom loop? Sounds like a toxic relationship

1

u/Aetherpirate 6h ago

Doom Loops are on the shelf next to the Fruit Loops. Tastes similar, but even more sugary to hide the doomy aftertaste.

1

u/Stig783 2h ago

It's only a matter of time until AI destroys the Internet 😂

0

u/BoredOfReposts 3h ago

If only ordinary software bugs could get this much attention. Seriously thats all this is, the program has a bug and traverses the wrong paths in it’s weighted network. Sounds like the program didn’t run the way it should. Thats called a bug. But its ai so lets pretend it has emotions and shit, lol.

1

u/Decent_Window5 1h ago

The article was nothing to do with that.

Your comment looks like AI.

Epstein didn't kill himself afaik

0

u/1stUserEver 4h ago

Good they need to rebuild from the ground up anyway. Stock is still up.

0

u/firephreek 3h ago

LOL Called this out years ago at Google.
