Seating at the Christmas Eve Bonfires?

Coming for the event and have some elderly folks wondering if it’s a fully standing event or if there are places they can sit down. Anyone have any info on this? I’ve looked online and can’t find a definitive answer.

Whats going on in Toas this weekend?

Long story short, I live in ABQ for a few years and regrettably never made the trek up to Toas. But Im headed back to NM this weekend and plan to climb Wheeler peak and spend a few days in Toas exploring. Are there any regular places to view good live music? What should I do? Best restaurants? Best place to buy crack cocaine ?(thats a joke ok.)

Trip report

I had asked some questions back a few years ago about visiting Taos here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/taos/comments/r6h4xj/questions_about_a_future_trip_to_taos/

Finally got a chance to visit for a couple days not that long ago, following some time spent in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and really enjoyed it. Took the bus up from the latter in the morning. Had no issues with the altitude here or in Santa Fe.

Decided to splurge a bit and stayed at El Monte Sagrado, mainly because they offer a free shuttle within 3 miles of the place, as I can't drive these days. Between the shuttle, the Chile Line (340 bus), and pre-arranging a couple Blue Bus rides, I was able to see almost everything I wanted. Very pleasant stay, the staff were very welcoming and helpful.

I managed to see everything I wanted in two days, one of the sightseeing days covering the afternoon I arrived. Most of the attractions took an hour or less.

First day: Harwood Museum, Blumenschein House, Kit Carson House, Governor Bent House, Taos Art Museum and Fechin House. Shuttle at start and end of itinerary, walked to everything else.

Second day: (Shuttle to Loretto Parking Lot, Chile Line) San Francisco de Asis Church, (Chile Line) Taos Pueblo tour, (Blue Bus) Millicent Rogers Museum, (Blue Bus to hotel), (hotel arranged a local driver to and from, there's no taxi, Uber, or Lyft) Martinez Hacienda.

Really enjoyed the Taos Art Museum/Fechin House (small but excellent art collection, impressive house with fancy wood carving), Millicent Rogers Museum (worthy collection of Native American and Spanish Colonial items), Taos Pueblo (brief, fascinating tour), the Martinez Hacienda, and Blumenschein House (different takes on adobe house living). Couldn't spend much time at the church as they had just opened for a funeral, but they were nice enough to let me come in and see it briefly (it looked similar to Cristo Rey, San Miguel Chapel, and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Santa Fe). The Kit Carson House was okay, worth a visit -- it also opened late. The Harwood was disappointing -- almost none of their permanent collection was up. The Governor Bent House was definitely worth a miss, but admission was minimal.

After having plenty of New Mexican food in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, decided to branch out a little food-wise. Had a light munch of toast and fruit at Bent Street Grille (pleasant and fresh), and a Chinese dinner at Song's (veggie chow foon and hot and sour soup, food was solid and portions were beyond huge). Was stuck for one dinner, decided to just get a cheap munch at Whataburger. Leonel's was closed for the duration, and no one at the hotel seemed enthusiastic about Mante's Chow Cart. Wasn't keen to drop big bucks at some of the other local food options.

Enjoyed it.

I have recently developed a fear of heights. Is the low road to Taos scary to drive?

Johnny Cash Taos letter in JC Museum, Nashville.

My wife spotted this while touring the Johnny Cash Museum in Nashville today. It reads.

Taos N.M. 1970

We drove from Santa Fe to Taos. The black table top mountains climbed up like stair steps toward Taos. The Rio Grande ran beside the road. Then we topped a last hill and on the plateau. The great beautiful plateau stretched to our left a hundred miles. The Rio Grande a million years ago cut a deep wide awesome gorge across the plateau. Proud, peaceful mountains look down on Taos. Proud peaceful, happy people, breath the clean Taos air. The only thing disturbing the countryside were giant dust devils and they're a thing of beauty. Upon our return from Taos, someone had the nerve to remark "Taos is overrun with hippies, isn't it?" If that's all you saw at Taos you've got no business going there. (Johnny Cash)

Argentinian here. I visited Taos, NM 3 years ago as a college student. That place made me the person I am now. This is just a little art I made about Taos. The ZIA was almost everywhere I went. I was at the TSV, one ZIA around every corner. I went downtown, ZIA again in every shop. Went to the gorge to be alone, ZIA in every place. Taoseños really love their native Taos Pueblo heritage.

Best/worst areas of Tres Piedras

Hello, Im an on/off resident of Taos for the past 20+ years. Im in healthcare, just graduated grad school, and finalizing a divorce. Im coming back because I can't stand urban life any longer. I have always lived in town or El Prado, but Im over the cost-inflated, run-through rentals with mold and DGAF landlords.

I also have two dogs (one is a large GSD), which makes it nearly impossible to find a rental for less than 4k a month. So, Im considering the Carson Estates area and maybe trying to work out a rental deal with someone selling. I know I will have both space and privacy out there... but I am curious about the crime as of late.

While I own multiple guns, I dont want to have to use any of them on a human. I just want decent, respectful neighbors who aren't trifling drug addicts. I work in psych so Im very familiar with the behavior.

Im curious if certain parts of the mesa are safer than others right now? As a provider, there are times I would be away from home for 12 hours at a time. I also leave for a few days at a time. Can anyone provide insight? The LAST thing I want to deal with is theft or someone shooting my dogs on my own property. While at home, I would not hesitate to defend myself, but I would also prefer to stay out of jail. TIA for some real talk 👌🏽

HVAC and Plumber recs

Got a tiny home out on the plateau. Looking for a HVAC guy to install a split unit and also looking for a creative plumber who can help set up a more comprehensive water system in the tiny home. Already have a cistern but the Internal plumbing is shoddy at best.

My fiancé and I are getting married in Eagle Nest, NM next September and are looking for wedding photographer recommendations. We've found some good options, but they're all in Albuquerque and we thought we should try Taos as an option.

Thanks for your help!

DoorDashers, let's compare notes

Hey, I've been dashing this week because I need to make rent. But I am trying to verify if DoorDash is doing something weird with my account.

I used to get orders regularly, but today I have dashed for 4 hours, stuck to hotspots, and still only received 2 orders.

Just came across this in one of the Facebook community groups. I don't know anything about it, so don't ask me. Just thought I'd pass it along in case anyone in the Taos County area would find it interesting.

There. That's my community service for the day. 🫡

Is Taos parking helping downtown businesses or driving customers away?

Post image
29 Upvotes

The town replaced meters at each space with 15 kiosks for nearly 500 paid spots. They’re hard to find, slow when there’s a line, and sometimes broken. A broken kiosk says “use another” without telling you where or how to pay by phone instead. How is someone with limited mobility supposed to search for another one?

If a quick stop means hunting for a working kiosk or risking a ticket, how does that help downtown shops? Has the Town Council looked at this?
