Technically, there's 2 who served before the Democratic party started, Roosevelt ended his political career as a Progressive with the Bull Moose Party, and the only Republican up there, Lincoln, destroyed the Confederacy modern MAGA loved so much.

u/G-Man6442 6h ago

Well yeah he took down the disgusting democrats!

No wait, they were the confederacy and the south will raise again!

But they’re bad because democrats, but also we need those statues of democrats because history even though they were put up-

You know what even I’m tired of this bit I’m doing.

Yes the confederacy were democrats, but the jackasses flying their flag are Republican nowadays

The Republican and Democratic parties have switched political ideologies since the Civil War. Modern day Republicans would have been Civil War era conservative Democrats that supported slavery and the Confederacy. It doesn't matter what they called themselves, the conservatives have always been the racists.

55

u/Squatch-21 6h ago

It’s wild how much they refuse to believe this as well.

29

u/MorganL420 5h ago

They like to pretend the 1960's never happened. Too many things didn't go their way. They don't want you to know about the civil rights conflicts that happened across the nation, or that we lost the Vietnam war, or that government dollars can be spent in such miraculous ways that we can put the first man on the moon instead of having the first trillionare pretend to do the same, or that the EPA was established (yeah, I know that last one was 1970, but close enough).

16

u/SunchaserKandri 6h ago

It's more like they conveniently "forget" about the switch when it suits them.

3

u/Asimov-was-Right 5h ago

They actively disbelieve that it happens.

This story illustrates the change in its entirety:

Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Senator Strom Thurman of South Carolina were both Democrats and were also both senior members of the Klu Klux Klan.

In the later years in the Senate, Sen. Byrd while remaining a loyal member of the Democratic Party, repudiated his membership in the KKK.

This contrasts with Sen. Thurman, who, in his later years, repudiated his membership in the Democratic party. He became a Republican.

I don’t know why people are astounded by “stupid people of facebook” would find that a ton a actual really stupid people who can’t understand the party change and the politics. I certainly understand that the “daughters of the confederacy” have done enormous damage to the education of people in the “deep south” but anyone else is just being willfully stupid. Which really goes to show why we don’t need bots to influence our public perceptions. On the other hand it shows how much influence an entire army of bots and a handful of grifters can accelerate the entire process.

The daughters of the confederacy were openly pushing for something like this, but took a few generations. Now it’s “well I saw it on TikTok”.

2

u/Vyzantinist 5h ago

It's not a matter of can't understand the party switch but won't. Conservatives don't care about facts or truth and come to the table with nothing but lies and a determination to 'win' what they see as a competition. They either believe you are exactly the same, and trying to educate them on the party switch is just a ploy or tactic, or they're simply nihilistic trolls (so overwhelmingly represented on the right) who don't care either way and you're wasting your time on.

2

u/whiterac00n 5h ago

Yes but what I was talking about is generational conditioning to specific textbooks that sold all over the country depending on the town. People learned the dumb stuff for generations and our government never bothered with it. And those textbooks were “states rights confederacy” not the “cornerstone”. It’s the “long psyOP”

2

u/Mistress_Saff 4h ago

To be more accurate the New Deal pushed out the southern democrats (read "made them feel not listened to about being racist") who were courted by the Republican party.

2

u/Horns8585 4h ago

Yes, the New Deal aimed to help the country and the people that were mightily struggling during the Great Depression. Conservatives did not like that. Then the signing of the Civil Rights Act cemented current day ideologies for the parties. Conservative Republicans were against civil rights and Democrats were for civil rights.

Yeah trying going to a klan meeting or neonazi rally and screaming “you’re all a bunch of democrats” see how that goes for you. Something tells me you’ll be walking away with less teeth than you came in with.

In that case, walk in and ask for a smoothie.

It’s easier to explain to people who think a historical party name is a gotcha that conservatives live where they have always lived, in the states where their traitor ancestors lived.

They're all Liberals too. Washington and Jefferson were Liberals. Roosevelt and Lincoln were in the Republican party during it's Liberal phase. So all four are in fact Liberals. MAGA just love their Liberals.

We should all be fans of our liberal democracy 😇

Lincoln ran not as a Republican but the Union party his second term. Technically not a Republican (though it was basically Republican and some Unionist dems attached)

3

u/Icy_Fish_2154 5h ago

Lincoln was a lifelong Whig, only converting to Republican shortly before his presidential run.

The Democratic-Republicans were the party of Jefferson, founded by him in 1792.

4

It’s fun to ask republicans which of his policies they liked as they aligned more with Democrats of today.

MAGA are the dumbest thing in American history.

  1. Washington didn't belong to any political party.
    1. Thomas Jefferson was a co-founder of the modern Democrat party.

There are no modern Democrats on Mount Rushmore primarily due to historical timing and the specific historical narrative chosen by the sculptor. However, looking at the history of the monument, the absence of modern

Democrats comes down to three main factors:

  1. The Timeline of the Monument

Mount Rushmore was conceived in 1923 and carved between 1927 and 1941. The sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, selected the four presidents to represent the first 150 years of American history.

• Many of the most iconic modern Democratic presidents—such as Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson—served decades after the monument was finished.

• Even Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), who was president while the monument was actively being carved, had not yet established his full presidential legacy when the design and four selections were permanently locked in during the mid-1920s.

That's why there are no democrats on Mt. Rushmore.

26

u/biffbobfred 6h ago edited 6h ago

There are no republicans either. TR was bull moose. Lincoln technically ran on the Union party his second term. Mostly Republican but not quite he tried to bring in some Dems

Actually, Jefferson is one of the founders of the OG Republicans, which historians now call Democratic-Republicans to help distinguish from Lincoln’s Republican Party. The Democratic Party may have arisen from the Jackson split later down the line, but the party had little in common with the modern Democratic party. They were the states rights, small government, agrarian vision guys. Then again, the Federalists were also not a perfect fit for the modern Democratic Party with the big business, industrial support. They do have some elements in common like advocacy for a stronger federal government and an element of anti-slavery from voices like Hamilton. But neither is a perfect match. As I teach my APUSH students, the parties have undergone 6 shifts over the course of history, so any comparisons like in the meme are just straight up nonsense. The parties have shifted and switched to much to make blanket comparisons. The only real thread, at least in my eyes is the Federal Government-States Right debates which have happened since the beginning. But even that gets messy during TR’s era because there won’t be that much daylight in that era between his and Wilson’s overall approach on progressive issues.

2

u/IAteTonysLoMein 6h ago

Given what a raging dickbag Borglum was, it's a surprise he didn't put Jackson in place of TR

34

u/GrandMoffTarkan 6h ago

Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican, the institutional precursor of the Democratic party FWIW. The Democrats have a big fundraiser called the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner

4

u/Not_Allowed_to_Die 6h ago

Technically he wasn't either. They didn't have these parties back then. But he was a Liberal. So was the other three.

24

u/ActualHumanONReddit 6h ago

The Democratic party didn't exist until 1828, well after George Washington and Thomas Jefferson served. Gutzon Borglum selected these four presidents because from his perspective, they represented the most important events in the history of the United States.

George Washington - unaffiliated with any party

Thomas Jefferson - Democratic-Republican

Theodore Roosevelt - Bull Moose Party

Abraham Lincoln - Republican Party

27

u/mercuriokazooie 5h ago

And Lincoln's Republican Party is far more in line with the Democratic Party of today. But they never like hearing that part because they still think saying KKK were Democrats is a "gotcha"

26

u/B1G_Fan 5h ago

Republicans: “The party switch is a myth, bro!”

Everyone with their head on straight: “Then, why are you worshipping Confederate Statues built by Southern Democrats??”

u/mercuriokazooie 5h ago

3

u/sometimeserin 5h ago

Paraphrasing Jamelle Bouie here, but: That’s only because the Civil War briefly catalyzed the party system into turbo-racists vs everyone else. The ideological cohesion of the parties broke down pretty quickly afterwards and never really got close to the same level until the realignment of the 1960’s to today. There were some common themes, like the Democrats being a little more pro-labor but also a little more racist. And occasionally you had a president who had a popular enough platform to rally the national parties for/against said platform. But mostly both parties were pragmatic coalitions of regional interests.

9

u/biffbobfred 6h ago

Lincoln ran in his second term on the Union party. Technically none of these guys was Dem or Republican.

11

u/Away_Woodpecker8813 5h ago

Teddy Rosevelt was a progressive. His nephew copied his philosophies and is considered the most liberal president we ever had. They can’t let Teddy be progressive because then the most man of all men was a liberal.

12

u/nub_node 4h ago

Teddy Roosevelt is like Jesus, Republicans love him but hate most of his teachings.

3

u/MsMercyMain 3h ago

Teddy is basically impossible to put coherently on the political compass, albeit he's best described as a progressive. He's a lot like LBJ in that his politics and opinions when you really dig deep are all over the place

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Historytech 4h ago

He was a progressive in many ways for sure notably domestic economic policy, though he’d probably have been closer to a social Republican and absolutely a hawkish Republican.

2

u/Glad-Ride-1749 4h ago

It is important to also to note the HOW National Park Land was gained when it was founded. Fun fact, it was not chill.

3

u/SuccessfulRaccoon957 3h ago

He's really a kind of politician that basically doesn't exist anymore where he held a mix of both progressive and conservative values as a public platform. His trust busting actions are considered incredibly progressive even by modern standards but he also continued the policy of us imperialism in Latin and South America and continued to genocide the native Americans.

6

u/Other_Log_1996 6h ago

In the case of Roosevelt, it was actually more because he and Borglum were personal friends.

3

u/iismitch55 5h ago

It’ll take more than that to kill a Bull Moose!

6

u/Northman86 5h ago

The Democrat Republicans ultimately resulted in the Democrats and Whig parties.

4

u/Yeseylon 5h ago

Wasn't Jefferson's party the precursor of Dems?

3

u/braniac021 5h ago

George Washington gets a pass as "unaffiliated", even though he pretty clearly aligned with Hamilton's Federalists and after Jefferson resigned his cabinet was practically all Federalists.

2

u/Ok_Star_4136 2h ago

Can I just add, the irony of someone writing "Cause there fricken stupid" as a comment on that?

"Cause" is not the right word, the right term is supposed to be "Because".

"There" is the wrong word here, it should be "they're".

"Fricken" is just a bad spelling of "freaking".

There's also no republicans

62

u/MacPzesst 6h ago

Lincoln was the first Republican, but he was a staunch liberal.

24

u/Squatch-21 6h ago

It’s fun to bring this up and watch republicans melt. He’d fucking hate the current Republican Party.

Honestly makes me sick seeing them parade him around and have their “Lincoln dinners”.

10

u/codefinity 6h ago

That's why they have that Lincoln Project YT channel that facts all of the MAGA degenerates.

4

u/Truthseeker308 6h ago

Also, not for nothing, but Democratiic comes BEFORE Republican in Jefferson’s party affiliation.

6

u/Gingeronimoooo 6h ago

Watch them melt?

You wrongly assume the MAGA cult have shame, or critical thinking skills, or give a fuck about reality

Sorry dude, but you are right about Lincoln being a progressive for the time

4

u/Squatch-21 6h ago

Oh, I mean melt as in meltdown about how THEY are the party of Lincoln, THEY are the party that freed the slaves.

They would never in their life actually admit any wrongdoing.

I have a nephew named Lincoln. I made the joke when they named him that they would actually hate who Lincoln actually was.

2

u/biffbobfred 5h ago

Regan would probably hate the modern republicans also. Slurping the Russians?

13

u/factoid_ 6h ago

They were the liberal party back then

3

u/More-Conversation931 6h ago

Well at the time Republicans were liberals and Democrats conservatives.

14

u/Not_Allowed_to_Die 6h ago

All Liberals. Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt, all Liberals.

10

u/joesaysso 6h ago

Both Lincoln and Roosevelt were Republicans while in office. The Whigs became the Republicans while Lincoln was in office. Roosevelt switched parties after he left office.

3

u/bravesirrobin65 6h ago

Northern whigs became Republicans before the election of 1860.

3

u/joesaysso 6h ago

Yes, good correction. Internet says 1854. I misremembered it for some reason.

3

u/biffbobfred 6h ago

Lincoln ran on his second term on the Union party. He won, so technically he wasn’t named a Republican. Though he was a Republican pretty much - the Union party was Republican and some unionist Dems.

3

u/DangerousDave303 6h ago

I had a history professor in college point out that the Republican Party leadership was so concerned about what T.R. might do that they put him in the position where he would, theoretically, cause the least disruption. That position was the vice presidency.

3

u/Not_Allowed_to_Die 6h ago

Because they were all Liberals.

4

u/Numerous_Photograph9 6h ago

I think progressive is a better descriptor. They weren't against conservative views, but they envisioned a government that was given power by the people regardless of how that fell on the partisan line. Roosevelt is probably more a liberal in the modern sense, but I believe he considered himself a progressive as well.

2

u/Not_Allowed_to_Die 6h ago

Who said progressive. They were ALL Liberals. Look it up.

13

u/blazelet 6h ago

They get so fixated on the superficiality of what things are named.

The KKK supported democrats a century ago. They support republicans today.

u/darthsploder77 6h ago

Washington did not have a political party, Jefferson was the founder of the Democratic-Republican party, (yes that is what it was called) and Roosevelt left the Republican party to run as member of the Progressive party. The only Republican on Mount Rushmore is Lincoln, he was the first and at the time it was a pro-union anti-slavery platform.

Because he was a Liberal like the other three up there.

Yeah. The meme mentioned party lines, not political affiliations. Mount Rushmore was commissioned by Teddy. And before the current political alliances existed. So it would make sense he would choose republicans who were liberal by the standards of their time.

All four of those faces are Liberals. MAGA are basically saying they love Liberals.

u/Khemul 6h ago

So, are conservatives claiming Jefferson now? 😂

1

u/Internal_Swing_2743 6h ago

Just for the record, 2 of the Presidents on Mt Rushmore were slave owners.

u/Vysce 6h ago

u/LNKDWM4U 6h ago

It’s not like it’s difficult to figure this stuff out, but they never put any effort into it.

1

u/balirosa 6h ago

Oh you mean the mountain the native Americans already had a name and a face on before white folks stole it and chiseled over it?

Liberal Mountain? You know they are uneducated when they say the south will rise again but they weren’t the confederates

1

u/macguini 6h ago

1

u/Bayamonster 6h ago

1

u/VW_R1NZLER 6h ago

1

u/zenmaster_B 6h ago

Hmm, it’s almost as if the Republican Party of old was progressive and flipped conservative over the course of decades— but don’t let that get in the way of a good fable to own dum, stoopid libs

1

u/PoopCooper 5h ago

Ohhhh, that’s why most people only recognize two of them!

1

u/Fox_of_Cintra 5h ago

I mean because republicans are obsessed with their reflection

1

u/hopeful7321 5h ago

I'm all for blowing those faces off and returning the land we stole back to Native America! Their Black Hills is a sacred place and we violated their treaty and just took it.

u/HaveaFuntime297 5h ago

What makes this so funny to me is the fact they used the wrong 'They're'

1

u/Oldmanprop 4h ago

Also, Washington was a Liberal Christian that leaned more towards being a Deist. Thomas Jefferson was a Unitarian Deist. Lincoln was not a member of any Christian church and leaned towards Deism. Teddy Roosevelt was a devout Christian.

That should get them going.

1

u/No-Group7343 4h ago

Try explaining Nancy Pelosi would have been republican in the 1950s.....

1

u/Elsupersabio 4h ago

1

u/Tripple_T 3h ago

Thomas Jefferson isn't a Democrat unless Republicans want to focus on him being a slave owner.
