How much did the basketball court cost, David?

831

u/ElephantRedCar91 9h ago

he refurbished the tennis court and used a portable basketball hoop, it sure was a doozy of a project..

355

u/litetravelr 9h ago

He basically painted new lines on an existing flat surface. The right seems to think he build a massive basketball complex.

141

u/Turdburp 8h ago

It's crazy how easily people can fall for this shit. My dad's buddy for instance.....he's intelligent, well-read, a retired respected attorney.......mentioned Obama's expensive bball court to me one day. At least he is willing to listen and change his mind.

87

u/nohandsfootball 8h ago

He can't be that intelligent if he thought a basketball court costs a lot of money. Obama didn't build an NBA arena, he put a fucking hoop up on a tennis court.

63

u/Akenero 8h ago

Also, just for the record, basketball courts are less expensive than ballrooms

Source: I build basketball courts and have an above refrigerator temperature iq

19

u/nohandsfootball 7h ago

The only thing I can build is LEGO and I know that a basketball court, even from scratch (or tearing up the tennis court and replacing it entirely), is a relatively negligible expense.

This is the "common sense" that the GOP thinks trans people and their allies lack, I guess.

11

u/doll-haus 6h ago

I mean, it depends? For an actual indoor space the requirements aren't that much different; ballroom might have thicker joists, but I'd expect any indoor court to also be built to hold a surprise floor crowd and not just 10 guys with impressive verticals.

But they're disingenuously implying "basketball arena" when it meant "took down the tennis posts, put down new paint".

The thing that gets me is the ballroom is so very clearly a knock-off Versailles. I've never been impressed with DJT's intelligence, but this seems shockingly tone deaf.

Trevor Moore has something to share on this.

I have an uncle I use to have a lot of respect for. Well read, well respected in the community, was a SEAL, retired from the military after 20+ years, worked as a counselor for veterans- you get the point. Dudes CRAZY for the current administration. Spouts so much just blatant nonsense I’m starting to wonder why I ever thought he was smart.

The 1950s tennis court built by Eisenhower. Obama's renewal refreshed the surface, lines for both the tennis court and basketball lines were repainted on the surface and portable hoops were used so as not to make it a permanent basketball court only. IOW, the court can still be used for playing tennis.

Building one from scratch runs from $17K to $75K. The estimate I read was $30K, which the Obamas paid themselves.

This $376 million dollar claim is a bullshit lie.

100% - even a smidgen of research shows there is a staggering difference in price and effect of the two.

That basketball court was likely well under 10k  (every contractor would be vetted plus costs and travel, otherwise its a few buckets of paint and a hoop)

I don't think he has ever given up any of the annual $400k paychecks. He just pays lip service for his followers to eat up and when it comes time, he'll take that check anyways.

Heck, in the 90s, Spy magazine sent him checks as a prank to see what he'd do, and discovered he would deposit every single check, even if it's for 13¢.

If only we can see his tax records.

11

So I had to investigate a little ...

Obama used tax dollars to convert the existing tennis court into a tennis/basketball court. The rough cost was $8000, not including the savings from not moving Secret Service to an outside location (like a golf course)

Trump's tacky ballroom is expected to cost around $600 million, with about $307 million expected to come from taxpayers.

The Independent estimates Trump's golf outings (22% of his days in office) during his second term cost taxpayers approx $200 million

Do MAGA trolls really want to go here?

41

u/Vorgse 6h ago

It's insane to me how people can compare, essentially, resurfacing a tennis court and adding basketball hoops, to building a whole-ass ballroom.

Like, your local city's parks department does the former in a week with a bunch of high school & college kids.

26

u/Grumpy-24-7 6h ago

I’m confused, which is common i suppose, but how does one compare the refurbishing of a tennis court to a single side (from what i understand) basketball court that used 1/7th the annual renovation and refurbishing budget allotment to a gilded ballroom that required demolition of one portion of the Whitehouse grounds and cost 2000 times the previously stated budgeted allotment and wasn’t approved by Congress, has ballooned in cost on 3 different occasions and has been said to be paid by either tax payers, political donations, or something else?

Like o said I’m confused so clarifications would help if I’m incorrect on anything.

The Obama guy did not build the basketball court for the public, did he? Based on what he told the reporters, it was for his personal exercise and a cost savings for the tax payers. Think about how much it would cost the tax payers if the Obama guy decided to go golfing once. All of the secret service personnel, the security sweeps at the golf course, the perimeter security, etc. Far less expensive for him to stay on the White House grounds where minimal security would be involved, no over time, no extra expense.

16

It’s not about cost. It’s not about how many Americans will use it. It is about the president not having unlimited power over reshaping the people’s Whitehouse without the input of the people.

He knocked out an entire wing of the Whitehouse without zero congressional approval so that he could build a massive eyesore meant only to serve as a permanent vanity project that will outlast him and his failed presidency.

The people of the United States would not have approved this. Their Congress would not have approved this. Their Senate would not have approved this. The issue is that we are just letting a mad man run with scissors and tear down our shit with zero pushback.

They repurposed a tennis court into a basketball court. Maga tells you it cost millions, but it didn't. It cost about 100k. Expensive, but no where near the $600M that the ballroom is currently expected to cost (and this has increased every month)

Maga is counting the cost of making the tennis court, long before the Obama presidency.

And let's imagine for a second it did cost millions, maybe even billions, like the ballroom. Do you like Obama? Do you want to be like Obama?

every dollar a democrat spends is roughly equal to $1M of republican spending. that's why people who care about the debt only care when a democrat is president

Obama didn't build the basketball court. He added some painted lines and two removable hoops to the tennis court and paid for it all himself. He didn't demolish part of a historical monument and use between 600 million and 900 million tax payer dollars.

5

u/Small-Dog-4459 8h ago

Thats all the same to these trumpsters

16

u/NetSignal392 8h ago

You know the “basketball court” was two free-standing (not installed into the ground) hoops with lines painted on to a tennis court, right?

No construction/demolition was done at all.

6

u/Apprehensive-Fig6887 8h ago

They'll ignore this comment

The basketball court was important in my opinion. And it showed who Obama is and who America should be. A ball room is the opposite of what America is. And shows us exactly who Trump is

8

u/Shionkron 6h ago

One is a game of the common man and the other is for the rich and fabulous to fraternize.

5

u/FireAuraN7 6h ago

And as further proof Obama is the better man - he just converted a tennis court out of his on pocket, AND the hoops could be retracted to allow the court to be used for basketball AND tennis.

Obama was in every way leagues better than Trump.

Those two things are completely comparable. The basketball court cost millions and required the destruction of massive sections of the White House. Even now the hidden missile systems below the basketball court provide ongoing security and protection.

Why the fuck would you condemn the basketball court, OP? Seriously, fucking enough of the both sides shit. Obama paid for it. All of it. It can still be used as its original purpose, a tennis court.

It was done his first and second years in office, too, and it doesn’t have his fucking name on it.

→ More replies (4)

10

u/FreshLiterature 3h ago

Why should we condemn both? What historic part of the White House did Obama tear down to build it while lying about it the whole time?

3

u/Numerous_Creme_8988 3h ago

That was a sarcastic question towards him.

He painted a basketball lines on an existing tennis court, with permission. Republicans are mind numbingly stupid with this talking point they parrot.

9

u/EtheusRook 9h ago

Fun fact. During Obama's first term, Trump got super mad that Obama rejected his offer to build a WH ballroom. Because, you know, that would be a fucking awful look right off of the 2008 financial crisis.

7

u/golfwinnersplz 8h ago

If I'm not mistaken the Obama's paid for the basketball court and it was something around 50k.

Nuance has the left the GOP for a long time.

They post the dumbest shit over and over.

How dare Obama waste taxpayer money on some paint and a portable basketball hoop. That’s dozens of dollars wasted! DOZENS!

Obama got proper authorization first.

5

u/Sea_Green7967 8h ago

Why would we condemn making a tennis court dual purpose?

7

u/DrunkyMcStumbles 8h ago

Obama got 2 of those movable hoops. They painted some more lines on the existing tennis court. And they did in fact host tournaments for local teams.

6

u/Mixelphlick 8h ago

The basketball court that cost next to nothing and didn’t demolish existing parts of the building? That basketball court?

This is like comparing me putting 8 pavers in my back yard to tearing down my garage to build an airplane hanger…

5

u/Significant-Order-92 9h ago

I mean no one really championed Obama's basketball court as necessary for national pride or diplomacy. Most people were just like "ok, whatever" and that was the end of it.

Said championing of the Ballroom as somehow for the American people is the context around pointing out most will never be in it.

5

u/BrazenGamer 8h ago

Basketball court cost between 50,000 and 100,000. The ballroom is going to be between 600 million to 900 million by some estimates. Yeah that's a fair comparison. They also didn't have to tear down a third of the White House to build it.

5

u/Gh05t_0n3_5150 8h ago

His basketball hoop didn’t tear down a whole wing of the building plus an iconic rose garden. If he wanted to build a basketball stadium then you can use this argument

5

u/ford2black 8h ago

Building a basket ball court not equal to building a grand ballroom ....Just dumb. Waste of money

4

u/RabidJoint 8h ago

Obama didn’t tear down 1/3 of the White House either. These people are just looking for any answer to kiss Trumps ass

Obama basketball court cost under 50k not 600 million, and more importantly was paid for with Obamas personal funds and NOT TAXPAYER MONEY!

I wish i could believe these idiots can't legit be this dumb.

5

u/lilbitze 8h ago

I mean one of em required you to tear down a history and protected part of the white house. Rose gardens gone too. White house can build stuff but you gotta follow the zoning laws.

→ More replies (6)

4

u/Both_Painter2466 6h ago

It wasn’t a half billion dollar basketball court. And ⅓ of the white house wasn’t torn down to have it

3

u/SourLemons2 8h ago

Who can blame Obama for being bored by a bowling ally built by Truman, updated by Nixon & Clinton. Basketball is cool!

4

u/1767gs 8h ago

Whats funny is they actually believe its a ballroom 😂😂

4

u/brotherhoodzero 8h ago

Did he tear down part of the White House to build this Basketball Court?

4

u/AshtonBlack 8h ago

One of them was paid for by the President in an already established place; no demolition needed, and it can easily and cheaply be removed if not needed.

They are not the same thing at all, David.

3

u/N-Toxicade 7h ago

Because the basketball court installation costed tax payers almost half a billion dollars and destroyed the East Wing of the White House.....oh wait that is the fucking ballroom.

What was destroyed to put the basketball court in? The edges of a tennis court...

These people are so fucking disingenuous with their bullshit.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/SuperKami-Nappa 9h ago

I’ve never heard anyone use that particular complaint about the ballroom.

3

u/Comprehensive_Cap290 8h ago

That’s because it’s not the complaint any of us have.

3

u/TucOlderMale52 8h ago

Now compare the cost of both.

3

u/firejonas2002 8h ago

The “basketball” court they love to harp on so much was a tennis court that had been there for years prior to the Obama’s, and Obama paid for the hoop himself. 😂

3

u/Maleficent_Memory831 8h ago

I find it hilarious that they use the face of Sydney Sweeney as the voice of "reason".

3

u/evilpercy 8h ago

They cost the same right? Right?

3

u/Bayamonster 8h ago

They put two basketball hoops in an existing Tennis court.

3

u/zonearc 8h ago

I don't argue about the Americans who will use it. I argue that it's a waste of funds when we're in an economic crisis.

Who cares that Obama spent a couple thousand $ on a portable hoop when he recovered the economy after Bush Jr.

3

u/vtdah 8h ago

Was it one of those 400 million dollar basketball courts with a diamond floor? If so, yeah that's bullshit man

3

u/bwsmith201 8h ago

They put up a hoop and painted different lines on an already-present tennis court. Totally the same as hundreds of millions of dollars. These people are insane.

3

u/ls952 8h ago

Obama didn't DEMOLISH THE EAST WING to build his basketball court, or trash Carter's rose garden.

3

u/CantModerateMe 8h ago

The "basketball court" was literally just a basketball hoop installed at the existing tennis court

do these idiots think that was a project that took more than one random dude an aftenoon of casual work?

3

u/metal_bastard 8h ago

Obama converted a tennis court into a multi-purpose court. Roosevelt installed the original court in the early 1900s.

Obama only added hoops, painted basketball court markings, and kept the court usable for tennis. Kind of like a high school gym that has markings for basketball and volleyball...

I should probably also mention it was privately funded.

3

u/AndJDrake 7h ago

Obama paid for the court and was just a repainted tennis court

3

u/pyrofox79 7h ago

Wasnt the court already there? Just was someyhing else before?

3

u/joeefx 7h ago

It was $399 million cheaper

3

u/SvartrKukkSceand 7h ago

He didnt "build a basketball court". He had some very minor modifications made to the Tennis court that allowed it to be USED as a basketball court AS WELL.

It also didnt cost 3/4 of a billion dollars, illegally destroyed a building he had no right to destroy, etc.

Stupid COnservicunt false equivalences and whataboutism.

3

u/OG-BigMilky 7h ago

Cost of ballroom vs Cost of Basketball Court?

Comparing diamond encrusted apple to plain old oranges.

3

u/Legitimate-Simple-20 7h ago

I think Obama didn't destroy the whole east wing and also made sure his basketball court could easily be removed by the next president. every president added something he wanted to the white house. Carter put solar panels on it's roof and got a lot of shit about it too, but he was just ahead of his time.

3

u/Immediate-Algae7975 7h ago

The basketball court didn’t cost a zillion dollars.

3

u/Professional_Scale66 7h ago

I believe this is what’s known as a false equivalency.

3

u/Temporary_View_3303 7h ago

Obama didn’t build a basketball court. He took the existing tennis courts and converted them to dual use for tennis AND basketball. It cost $75K. Staff and guests got to use it so I’m going to bet that’s more people than will use a ballroom.

3

u/Dry_Ass_P-word 6h ago

Did Obama knock down 1/4 of the White House for the basketball court?

3

u/Not_the_name_I_chose 3h ago

You mean the temporary basketball court that was easily removed and left no changes?
