Six games into the season, the Blues have some pretty interesting underlying numbers

Post image
105 Upvotes

We’re actually generating more dangerous chances than we’re giving up.
At 5-on-5, the Blues have a 53.2% shot-attempt share and a 56.7% high-danger chance share (55 for, 42 against).
But expected goals are almost dead even: 12.3 for, 12.2 against.
So we’re controlling a decent share of the attempts and dangerous opportunities without translating that into much of an expected-goal advantage.

Our penalty kill has scored as many goals as our power play.

Power play: 2 goals on 14 opportunities (14.3%)
Penalty kill: 89.5%
Shorthanded goals: 2

That’s a pretty strange special-teams combination.

The Hofer/Binnington numbers aren’t particularly close right now.
Hofer: .920 SV%, 1.76 GAA in 4 starts
Binnington: .847 SV%, 4.50 GAA in 2 starts

Obviously six games is a tiny sample, and Binnington’s outing against Colorado skews things. Still, Hofer has been the more effective goalie so far.

Our last two games account for 57% of our season’s goals.
First four games: 9 goals on 103 shots (8.7% shooting).
Last two games: 12 goals on 53 shots (22.6% shooting).

Our two leading scorers are both offseason additions.
McTavish: 4 goals, 7 points.
McMichael: 2 goals, 6 points.

Between them, that’s 6 of our 21 goals. Pretty solid early returns.

There’s some encouraging 5-on-5 play, a good penalty kill, a pretty dramatic goaltending split, and an offense that’s suddenly finishing everything.

Prospect [Rutherford]: Blues’ Dylan Peterson fights in NHL debut as parents watch from front row: ‘That’s our son!’

Mom leaned back in her seat, grabbing her head with both hands. Dad stayed a little more calm, keeping his hand over his mouth. Peterson’s three sisters stood a couple of rows back, moving with each punch and recording the fight with their cell phones.

It happened late in the third period of the Blues’ 7-2 win over Ottawa, and when reporters met with Peterson in the locker room after the game, he hadn’t seen his family’s response yet.

“Unbelievable, I’m so happy they could make it,” Peterson said. “I can’t wait to see what their reaction was. But yeah, I’m super happy they got to come.”

Peterson made it through the bout unscathed and left quite an impression on a club that drafted him in the third round (No. 86 overall) in 2020. The 6-foot-4, 209-pound forward logged just 8:57 of ice time, but doled out four hits and was plus-1.

“Really good first game in the NHL,” Blues coach Jim Montgomery said. “As a fourth-line right winger he did exactly what you want a fourth-line right winger to do. He was heavy on pucks, he was relentless on pucks, he was physical. He executed really well with and without the puck. So overall, a really good game for him in his NHL debut.”

Can we update the sub?

• Upvotes

I get we're all busy, we all have lives. I'm certainly not volunteering to be a mod, I know I don't have the time. So I understand how things slip through the cracks... but can we update the sub a bit?

The standings and schedule on the sidebar of the sub are still from early April of last season. The banner of the sub touts our cup win from eight seasons ago. You don't see our rebranded look anywhere. The new colors, the new note, the new secondary logos, that we've been using for over a year, are nowhere on this sub's banner, logo, or even in the available flair options. It feels like we're stuck in the past, and I'm not sure why. It'd be really nice if the sub accurately represented the team's current look. If the new note and brighter blue were on the banner. If the new note was the upvote marker. If the new note, trumpet, treble clef, and vinyl logos were flair options. And, more than anything, if the standings and schedule were updated on the sidebar. Just throwing this out into the void, hopefully some change will come from it.

Across the last 5 seasons, the Blues blow less leads, but also make fewer comebacks, than expected

Post image
4 Upvotes

I did a version of this yesterday but folks pointed out some meaningful flaws, so I did a couple things different, and St. Louis popped out as a notable team.

First, I looked just going into the third period. So blowing leads, or coming back from a deficit in the third.

Then I looked at this controlling for team quality. Not in the worlds most rigorous way, just imagine this scenario:

  1. You play 100 games, and in 35 of them you enter the third behind
  2. You win 9 of the 35, which is 26%. Is that good or bad?
  3. Well, in your other 65 games you took about 78% of the points, and other teams in the league at that level come back from trailing at 15%, which is ~5 games.
  4. Therefore, you make come backs a bit more than expected, 4 more times than expected.
  5. Over the five and change seasons, anything within about 9 games of expectation is normal variation

I think this gives a much more interesting picture of teams that make come backs and blow leads, irrespective of just "good teams good bad teams bad."

BTW, in 466 games the Blues came back in 20 of 176, expected 29 (-9) and blew 22 of 192 leads, expected 31 (-9)

Hey Blues fans,

We've had these for a while now, and now that the broadcast has moved to Blues+ it's obvious that a diversified ad revenue is not the business model.

Almost every commercial break features our dead-eyed captain lost in confusion about APRs and how to operate a laptop in mitts. They even show up mid-period without a break in play. Last year's commercials were pretty annoying but I find these to be brutal, and the season has barely started!

Just want to know how everyone else is coping. Love the start from the boys so far this year - LGB!!!

[Rutherford] What I’m seeing through 5 Blues games: McDouble line is a triple threat and 4 more observations

Thumbnail
nytimes.com
67 Upvotes

1. Top line arrives

The Blues’ top line of Dylan Holloway, Robert Thomas and Jimmy Snuggerud finally had a breakout game Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

They accounted for six points, with Snuggerud scoring twice, Holloway racking up three assists and Thomas one assist. Holloway and Thomas hadn’t scored in the first four games.

2. McDouble line clicks

It’s only been five games, but you can see already that Mason McTavish and Connor McMichael are a good fit.

3. Defense a strength

Remember a year ago when the Blues were giving up so many goals they had to change their defensive system early in the season?

That’s not the case in 2026-27 under assistant coach Greg Cronin’s new system.

THE MOST AND LEAST DOMINANT TEAMS IN THE NHL LAST WEEK

This is an interesting topic. The blues certainly by the eye test looked like the better team across all 3 of those games. Didn’t realize it was that level of dominance.

Prospect [Korac] Dylan Peterson: "I’ve wanted to wear the ‘Note’ for six years since I got picked (in the third round of 2020). It’s a long time to wait, to work, to get here. I’m full of emotion and I’m so excited."

Prospect Dylan Peterson set to make his debut tomorrow, here’s everything you need to know about the 24 year old….

2020: Drafted 86th overall (third round) by the Blues.

2020–2024: Played four seasons at Boston University, totaling 60 points in 119 games and reaching two Frozen Fours.

2022: Named MVP of the Beanpot tournament after scoring the championship-winning goal.

2024–2026: Worked his way through the Springfield Thunderbirds, the Blues' AHL affiliate, producing 47 points in 112 games through the end of last season.

Today: Finally earned his first NHL call-up at 24 years old.

Why this is such a big deal to him….

It's the payoff after six years of waiting and wondering if he'd ever get his shot.

Peterson had a strong training camp this September and thought he had a legitimate chance to make the Blues. Instead, he got sent back to Springfield.
He kept working, earned the call-up, and told reporters Monday:

"I've wanted to wear the 'Note' for six years since I got picked."

There's also a special family connection: his first NHL game is expected to be in Ottawa, where he played hockey growing up. His parents, Vlaine and Angela, along with his three sisters, are among the family members planning to attend.

What kind of player is he?
He's a 6-foot-4, physical, hard-working forward who brings speed, forechecking and toughness. Coach Jim Montgomery sees him as a fourth-line player who can make life difficult for opponents.

Bottom line: He's not a highly touted superstar prospect who was guaranteed an NHL career. He's a guy who spent years grinding in the minors, fighting for his opportunity, and refusing to give up on his dream. Now he gets to wear the Blue Note in an NHL game.
