Discussion Thread Star Pilots — Official Discussion Thread

Publisher's summary:

Wedge Antilles—hero, warrior, star pilot. The only rebel to face two Death Stars and live to tell the tale.

Wedge confronted death countless times, in battles large and small, where split-second decisions often meant the difference between survival and a fiery demise.

Now, he tells his story, and those of the brave pilots he served with and elite enemies he fought against. Aided by unsealed archives from the New Republic, and unreleased interviews of Imperial and Alliance veterans, Antilles gives the definitive account of what it was to fight the Galactic Civil War from the cockpit of a starfighter.

The ships, tactics, and weapons, but also the quiet times and camaraderie, the moments of fear and despair, the thrill of victory and the aching loss of friends. This is the untold story of the galaxy’s star pilots.

They were both super nice and really inspiring to talk to! They shared a lot about how crazy writing these is with what you are (and aren’t) allowed to explore, and how fast you have to crank it out (30-60 days! 😱) But they were really cool people, and I’m excited to read their new original books I also picked up (Calamities from Wendig, Monstera from Dawson).

Debate and discussion I've read Death Troopers by Joe Schreiber

I’ll admit I had my doubts about this novel at first. I’m not exactly the biggest fan of the zombie genre, so I went in expecting nothing more than your classic reanimated corpses and that was it. What a macabre surprise I was in for by the time I finished it.

The author did an incredible job with this one; the narrative moves at a brisk pace, describing the siege unleashed by a mysterious virus aboard a prison barge. The horror escalates slowly, eventually spiraling into a bloody odyssey of corpses and formless monstrosities, something that left me both fascinated and grinning from ear to ear. Perhaps it’s because the franchise is so often pigeonholed these days as "for kids", but I was genuinely struck by how visceral and creative the author could be (my favorite scene involves a mountain made of various severed limbs). He truly maximized the potential of the Star Wars universe to craft terrifying and conceptually inventive zombies. (I’ll definitely be checking out the prequel, Red Harvest, at some point.) On that same note, I have to praise the decision to set a big part of the story aboard a Star Destroyer. Its colossal scale creates a perfect, labyrinthine environment, where the constant feeling of being watched becomes almost oppressive. As a fan of ships, I loved every second spent exploring its corridors.

Of course, the story also relies heavily on its characters. Dr. Zahara Cody was an engaging lead, delightfully sharp, with a pragmatic streak that held up well amidst the surrounding chaos (I’d love to see more stories featuring doctors as protagonists). Jareth Sartoris was a fantastic antagonist for the most part, utterly despicable and a total jerk; I found myself wanting to see him fall just as much as I wanted to keep following his journey. My only gripe with him is his ending, which feels a bit out of character. The Longo brothers work well, too; I don´t find them particularly remarkable, but it´s nice to have the perspective of prisoners who are easy to empathize with, culminating in some truly emotional moments.

As for Han and Chewie... their presence didn't bother me much. I’d be lying if I said they didn't diffuse the tension in certain moments, but at the same time, I can't but fall over by the charisma they bring to every scene and interaction with the protagonists; Han, in particular, has a unique "horror hero" vibe that reminded me of Ash Williams. In that regard, I also have to give credit to Sean Kenin, the audiobook narrator; it is thanks to him that those sections feel natural within the rest of the story, not to mention the distinct voice he gives each character.

My only reservation is that the beginning is a bit slow. I liked some moments, but as I said, I wasn't really interested in following the brothers story. Oh, and I certainly don't see much reason for this to take place a year before Ep IV. I feel like Han would be the first to brag about this...

In conclusion, it is a grotesquely beautiful and enjoyable horror novel. Please, disney, let the authors get this creative in more horror stories!

Haul/Collection Haul #2! 13 Oct 26

Hey all,

Three days after posting my last haul, the same marketplace seller reached out to offer some more. He’s working through his collection and purging mainly canon - which is fine for me as I have loads of gaps!

Paid $125 AUD ($87.25 USD) for the above.

$4 for paperbacks, $6 hardcovers and this time $5 for comic trade paperback collections.

I’ve always been interested in the comics but here in Aus, the price is incredibly steep. I couldn’t say no to them!

Avg item cost of $5.00 AUD ($3.49 USD)

Total Haul:

New to the collection - 16

Read already / Returning to the collection - 6

Upgrading an owned book - 4

Unneeded duplicates - 0

DK’s ‘Epic Battles’ is by no means a big book, technically it’s not even a novel at all but rather a children’s early reader.

However, at the ripe age of 7 years old I had never seen such aura on a front cover before. It was particularly formative in curating my love for Star Wars and its books in particular. Now 20+ years later (💀) and after some lengthy internet scouring, I’ve been able to piece together a pretty faithful Heavy Gunner companion to display with my copy on the shelves 🔥

Appreciation Post As someone who never got into the show, this book was a wonderful way of experiencing some of the most lauded arcs

The book is basically a "greatest hits" of the Clone Wars show but with the twist of each story being told through the POV of one of the protagonists. I'm a bit of a weirdo that doesn't usually enjoy TV animation (and the Clone Wars "blocky" art style is not my jam either) and thanks to this book I can say I've finally experienced the amazing Umbara arc witth the clones, or Darth Maul's return followed by his attempts at revenge towards Obi-Wan, or the Dathomir massacre, or the "Rako Hardeen" infiltration arc with Cad Bane and co.

And apart from those big events there's also quite a few of stand-alone small adventures sprinkled in. I had a really great time. A great and holistic presentation of the war. Strongly recommended

Debate and discussion What's your favorite Star Wars stand-alone novel?

Post image

For me, Plagueis takes it by a mile, although Freed gives Luceno a run for his money with some of the individual scenes in novels like Rogue One. Overall, Luceno does an amazing job of making his stories work as virtually stand alone, while also feeling like they fully and meaningfully inhabit the Star Wars galaxy. Curious what other people have to say!

Question Why did most people only read Revenge of the Sith from the prequel trilogy novelizations?

"Prequels are much better and actually good as books" seems to be a somewhat common opinion, but when I look into threads where someone asks about the novelizations, turns out a lot of people only read ROTS!

Is it because of word of mouth? Is it because of it's place in the Dark Lord trilogy? Is it both? Is it because people actually like the Episode III movie and curious about the novel can bring to the table?

Question Am I losing it??

I swear when I listened to the audiobook for Alex freeds reign of the empire mask of fear last year - it was 3 different narrators each doing the povs for saw. Mon and bail.

Now when I look it up it says the whole novel is narrated by January lavoy...? Am I losing it? I've listened to all the audio dramas. I'm not confusing those. But if not this book. Is there a book where each of the pov chapters have a different narrator? Not including the "from a certain pov" books.

Thanks in advance!

Recommendations Dressing A Galaxy - similar books at a more affordable price?

Hi, the title pretty much sums it up. I ADORE Star Wars fashion, especially the prequel era so when I found out about the book Dressing A Galaxy (Trisha Biggar) I was disappointed to see that none of the bookstores in my area sell it (sucks being an Australian), and I could only find it on Amazon and Ebay for like $1,000. Again, I love Star Wars fashion but not THAT much.

Are there any other books that delve into Star Wars fashion, but at a more affordable price? Like anything less than $100. Specifically the prequel era but I'll take anything atp.

Thanks!
