Why is online treated like a game of hot potatoes?

Is there a way to set a turn timer instead of this crazy whack-a-mole system?

Yeah, set matches to 48 hour turns

Build up a few games, check in periodically

You get used to it! I found it so bad the first 10 or so games, but once you know the cards and formulate a strategy there's more than enough time to make decisions.
