I've lived in Durban and Cape Town. Dry heat is worse than humidity!

No ways. At least in a dry heat your sweat evaporates

But in dry heat you don't sweat at all. You just turn into biltong

Sounds like you need to drink more water...

I lived in both too.

Shade is still bearable at 40 degrees in the Cape. 40 in durbs is death.

The one thing I have noticed though is that I get dehydrated a lot easier in Cape Town because I'm not visibly sweating and haven't adapted yet

No. No, it is not. Dry heat can be intense, but it's never made me feel like I needed gills to breathe

Meanwhile here in Cape Town we still have the tail end of winter. Not that I'm complaining, give me cold over hot any day.

Im sitting outside and freezing right now. We keep taking the winter bedding off then putting it back on again.

Dude and it's not even December yet.

And with global warming, this is the coolest it's ever going to be.

It’s even better when you have the hottest room in the entire house. (my window faces west so from noon to sunset i’m getting braai’d”)

You only feel it when you're told about it

It's nice to have some clouds, ne

You just burn without the clouds. At least now you can sit outside, have a drink.

Stay hydrated and reduce caffeine intake. That stuff will dehydrate you. Don’t forget sunscreen. Stress less. It’s too hot to be having many thoughts.

5

u/silverdotos 1d ago

Not to be contrarian, but caffeine intake in something like coffee is actually not that dehydrating.

The amount of water in the drink offsets the diuretic effect of the caffeine. Also, IIRC, you build up a tolerance to the effect quite quickly.

Cool and rainy in parts of the Garden Route. It has been up and down a lot, though. We're getting days with max of 15deg and then 32deg the next, and then back to 16deg the following day back to back. Never know what to dress for.
