Self-Promotion Wednesdays Free month of Pro for a tool that turns your clicks into a step-by-step guide

Post image
19 Upvotes

I'm Julian, I study business informatics and I work on StepGrab next to uni. It's my app, I'm posting it under the Wednesday rule, and the free Pro month below is the reason for the post.

THE DEAL

If you want a free month of Pro on Windows, just leave a comment and I'll reply with your own code. 100 codes, one per person, no card needed, and it simply ends after the month. Just comment!

WHY I BUILT IT

At my working student job I was the guy people asked when they didn't know where some setting was, or which button comes after which. Every time the same thing: fifteen screenshots, crop them all, red arrows, type the steps underneath. Half an hour or more per guide, and three weeks later some of it was wrong again anyway.

WHAT IT DOES

You hit record, do the task once, and every click becomes a screenshot with a numbered arrow and a sentence saying what you clicked. You can drag the arrows, rewrite sentences, reorder steps and black out names or emails, and the black bar is burned into every export. Export as GIF for free, or PDF, HTML, Markdown, MP4 and a vertical video with Pro. Screenshots stay on your computer, there's no account and nothing is uploaded.

THE HONEST PART

It's not fully free software. The free version is usable (unlimited recordings, 15 steps per guide, GIF export, the whole editor), but the other formats and the step text in exports are Pro. It's not open source either. Things I don't have: a team library, a browser extension, a company behind it. It's one student.

Windows (Microsoft Store) and Mac (Mac App Store), the page has both: https://stepgrab.net

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Replaced notification banners with a small light on the edge of the screen (got 10 codes for the pro)

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Each app gets a thin sliver of light on the edge of the screen, in its own colour. No sound, no banner, nothing covering what I'm doing. I can tell at a glance whether it's my partner or just another email, and most of the time I don't need to open anything.

If I do want to read it, I swipe the glow and a small panel shows up. When I'm watching something, the glows just wait until I'm done.

It's an Android app called Aura. No ads, and it doesn't have internet access at all. Full disclosure, I'm the one who made it, so feel free to tell me if this misses the point of minimalism. Curious how others here handle notifications. All the lights are fully customizable (size, placement, colour).

I've got 10 premium codes so if you would like to take one just comment and i will do a little draw later if enough people asks for it.

Thanks for reading!

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Time: a free, automatic, local time tracker for Windows

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi, I'm Jonah, the developer of a new time tracker for Windows. It's called Time, which is a very creative name, I know, but I wasn't planning to share it when I started.

I know there are lots of time trackers out there, but I built this one because I couldn't find a free, automatic, and privacy-focused time tracker that I liked. The ones I tried either lacked features, or had far too many, because they were made for businesses that wanted to track employees and generate invoices. But I just wanted to see how I spent time on my computer, without all that extra stuff.

Time is a pretty simple app. It has everything you'd expect from a time tracker: automatic logging, an option to record on a schedule, and an interactive dashboard that responds to any date range you select. The dashboard shows how much of your time is spent productively, which apps and websites you use most, and how your habits change over time. As a data scientist, I made sure the statistics are accurate and that the charts help you spot trends quickly.

Website tracking works through an optional browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, and Firefox. Without it, Time records your browser as one app. With it, Time records which website you're on, so you can see time per site and sort sites into your own categories. The extension shares only the site's domain: no page paths, search queries, or page contents, and it doesn't run in private windows.

Privacy was a huge focus of mine. You don't need an account to get started (or keep going), because all your data stays on your device and is never uploaded to a server. I don't collect any personal information about you, like your email address or activity, so there's nothing to sell to marketers. In fact, unless you email me for support, I won't even know your name.

For full transparency, Time's source code is publicly available to read and inspect, and the browser extension is fully open source under the MIT license.

Cost mattered to me too. I wanted to track my computer use for years, and even a $7 subscription adds up. That is why Time is free during the beta, and if you start using it now, you'll never be asked to pay.

Time only runs on Windows right now (Mac and Linux coming soon). If you'd like to try it, you can learn more and download it from the website.

I'm trying to find out whether the app is useful to anyone besides me, so I'd love to hear from you if you install it. You can email me at [support@trackwithtime.com](mailto:support@trackwithtime.com) or reply "I'm trying it" in the comments below. With your permission, I'll check in about a week later to ask if you found it useful. That will be the only follow-up.

Questions and feedback are welcome in the comments either way.

Release [Big update] Pulse 1.4 – you asked for a BSOD analyser, so now it explains blue screens and sudden restarts

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

A few days ago I shared Pulse, a free and open-source app that turns the Windows Event Log into plain language. Version 1.4 is built from your feedback:

- Blue screens and random restarts explained: stop code name, likely cause and what to check, plus power loss, forced shutdown and WHEA hardware errors told apart

- Open an .evtx exported from another PC and read it the same way (great for IT support)

- Reports and exports can mask user/computer names, IPs and serial numbers so they're safe to share

- Exports no longer fail when Controlled folder access is on

Nothing leaves your PC: no telemetry, no account, no cloud. Read-only by design.

I build it with AI coding assistants and test every release myself; the full source is on GitHub (MIT).

Also on the Microsoft Store.

Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays [Self-Promotion Wednesday] Ctrl Deck V1.8 is out — I built a Windows workspace manager with AI, 20 years of business experience, and a lot more than prompts

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi r/software,

I'm back with a major update to a project I've been building and refining: **Ctrl Deck V1.8**, published independently under my software brand, **COM'BOX**.

Some of you may have seen an earlier version. This time, I'm not simply promoting the same application again with a different version number. V1.8 represents a substantial step forward in features, usability, onboarding, stability and the overall experience.

But before describing the software, I'd like to address something that comes up constantly in discussions about AI-assisted development.

### AI helped me build it. But AI didn't replace my judgment.

Today, almost anyone can open an AI assistant, type a few prompts and generate some code. That's impressive, but it doesn't automatically produce a coherent, maintainable or useful software product.

I believe I'm part of a still-small minority of independent builders who have learned to orchestrate AI across an entire software project, rather than merely use it to generate isolated pieces of code.

And there is an important distinction here.

**I'm not just writing prompts and hoping something works.**

I bring roughly 20 years of professional experience in sales and marketing to the table. That experience has taught me how to identify genuine needs, understand users, think about positioning, make decisions, manage complex projects and distinguish an attractive idea from a useful product.

I use AI intensively, but I remain responsible for the architecture, specifications, decisions, testing, quality expectations, commercial strategy and final result.

Different AI models and tools can contribute to different stages of the process. They still need direction, constraints, verification and continuity. When something doesn't work, the answer isn't to generate ten more random prompts. It's to understand the problem and resolve it.

**AI is an extremely powerful tool. It is not a substitute for product vision, professional experience or accountability.**

Ctrl Deck is my attempt to demonstrate what this approach can deliver in practice.

### So what exactly is Ctrl Deck?

Imagine your normal Windows working day.

You open several applications, search for documents, jump between folders, reopen websites, find browser tabs, switch between projects and repeatedly reconstruct the same working environment.

Your resources are scattered across the desktop, taskbar, Start menu, File Explorer and browser.

Ctrl Deck brings these everyday resources into **one customizable visual control panel**.

It is more than an application launcher. It is designed to organize your digital working environment and make it easier to return to the context you actually need.

### What's new and improved in V1.8?

**1. A much better first experience**

Ctrl Deck can analyze applications already present on your desktop and taskbar, then suggest an initial organization.

If Chrome is running, open tabs can also be considered.

You remain in control of what gets added. The idea is to help you start with your existing environment instead of forcing you to build everything from scratch.

**2. New Favorites**

Groups, compatible shortcuts and Workspaces can now be marked as Favorites.

The items you use most become easier to reach, so your important resources don't disappear inside an increasingly complex organization.

**3. A stronger application manager**

The Apps section helps you find applications and Windows utilities, search through them, and identify whether they already belong to a group or Workspace.

You can use these resources to build or expand your own organization without repeatedly hunting for the same applications.

**4. Workspaces: prepare an entire working context**

This is one of the most useful concepts in Ctrl Deck.

Instead of opening resources one by one, you can prepare a reusable Workspace containing compatible applications, specific documents, folders, browser resources and other elements.

You can create one manually or capture a compatible environment that is already open, then edit the result.

Think of a Workspace for a client, a development project, an administrative task or your regular morning routine.

**Workspaces existed before V1.8; this release improves their creation, discovery and management.**

**5. Live Spaces: make interruptions less disruptive**

Live Spaces serve a different purpose.

They help you remember a temporary working context, including compatible applications and saved documents, so you can return to it later.

If that temporary context turns out to be useful regularly, you can convert it into a reusable Workspace.

It's about reducing the friction of interruptions, not pretending Windows can magically restore every possible application state.

**6. Keyboard shortcuts with conflict management**

Ctrl Deck supports optional keyboard shortcuts for compatible resources, groups and Workspaces.

V1.8 also provides clearer handling when a shortcut conflicts with another application.

You can choose which application takes priority, change the combination or ignore the conflict for that occasion.

Your organized resource cards aren't deleted simply because a keyboard binding conflicts.

**7. Better customization and everyday usability**

I've worked extensively on making the interface clearer.

Important functions, contextual menus, group management, drag-and-drop operations, personalization options and license information are easier to find and understand.

There are also improvements targeting responsiveness, stability and reliability, along with numerous small fixes.

**8. Ten supported languages**

Ctrl Deck V1.8 supports:

French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Hindi.

I'm building this for an international audience, not just my home market in France.

**9. Detailed documentation and demonstrations**

The website includes a V1.8 Quick Start guide with annotated screenshots, visual explanations and video demonstrations.

I want people to understand what the software does before they decide whether it fits their workflow.

### Pricing: try everything before deciding

I also changed the commercial approach.

- **14-day full-feature trial**, extended from the previous seven days.

- **No credit card required** to start the trial.

- **One-time license purchase**, not a recurring subscription.

- A **limited free mode with two editable shortcuts** remains available.

- A permanent price reduction was introduced with V1.8.

The goal is straightforward: let people properly explore the application before asking them to pay.

### Distribution and trust

Ctrl Deck is available for **Windows 10 and Windows 11**, through the Microsoft Store and an official, digitally signed installer from COM'BOX.

The website also provides public installer security-check information, documentation and a direct download option.

Your original personal files are not uploaded to a cloud service just because you organize shortcuts to them. Configuration export/import is available, but it is not presented as a replacement for a full PC backup.

### Why I'm sharing it again

Because building the first version was only part of the challenge.

Improving an application, listening to feedback, correcting mistakes, maintaining compatibility, documenting features and publishing successive versions are what turn a prototype into a real product.

I'm an independent creator. I don't have the marketing budget of a major software publisher, and I'm not pretending Ctrl Deck is perfect.

But I am serious about the product, its evolution and the people who might find it useful.

I also think the conversation about AI-assisted development needs to move beyond the simplistic choice between "AI-generated junk" and "traditional software development."

What matters is **who is making the decisions, how the work is controlled, how the results are verified and whether the final software solves a real problem**.

That's the standard I want Ctrl Deck to meet.

### Take a look and tell me what you think

**Official website and V1.8 demonstrations:**

https://www.com-box.fr/en/ctrl-deck/

**Microsoft Store:**

https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9N2RWL5GNVH9

I'd especially appreciate feedback from Windows power users, developers, designers, freelancers and people who regularly switch between multiple applications or projects.

Does this kind of visual workspace manager solve a problem you recognize? Which features matter most to you? And what would you expect from V1.9?

Constructive criticism is as welcome as positive feedback.

**Ctrl Deck V1.8 is available now. Built independently, developed with AI under human direction, and improved through actual product work — not just prompts.**

Thanks for taking a look.

Discussion AI takeover

My entire Twitter feed is filled with people saying AI is about to reach a breaking point, that we’re all going to lose our jobs, cyberattacks are going to become more widespread and everything is about to change. 6 month to a year. It’s so scary. How much of this do we think is actually going to happen? Are we really heading toward a future where most of our jobs are replaced by AI?

Self-Promotion Wednesdays After months of work I released LunaDock, a desktop stacks app for Windows 10/11, and I'd love your feedback

Post image
2 Upvotes

LunaDock sorts the files on your desktop into tidy stacks by type: images, videos, music, documents, games, apps and more. Click a stack to fan it open, click again to tuck it away. Anything new you save to the desktop lands in the right stack on its own. Your files never move; it only changes how the desktop looks.

What it can do:

  • Classic "pile" look or colorful category icons, with 20+ icon packs
  • Custom stacks with rules (e.g. everything with "invoice" in the name, or every .psd/.ai file goes into "Design")
  • Group by type or by date
  • Stacks on any edge of the screen (top, bottom, left or right)
  • "Deck" view for big stacks: extra items pile up like a deck of cards, and you scroll through them with the mouse wheel
  • Your usual Windows right-click menu on every file, plus quick preview
  • Works with Wallpaper Engine (clicks still reach your wallpaper)
  • Multi-monitor support, 16 languages

It's on the Microsoft Store: LunaDock

I'm a solo developer, so feedback really helps: bugs, missing features, or things that feel off. I'll be in the comments. Thanks for reading!

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I made a webcam super-tool with background removal and much more. Need help for the new AMD and and testers.

Hi folks, I've posted here about this before, and lots of you asked if I could make an AMD version. So a month of work (was tricky! i have not slept much), I now have an AMD version! Beta 1.22 ready to go.

Here's the latest demo/tutorial video. I hope to find testers using RDNA 2-4, and also Nvidia 4-5k cards, to see if it works decently. Download the app (free trial/nopay) at camfiltergpu.com.

Because this is a whole new GUI and optimizations, if you've already installed (great!) you'll need to do a 'clean' install (backup is saved) that also first auto-runs the new automated web-camera diagnostic tool.

This PC app enables live video (webcam or procam) 'filtering' to greatly improve low light and high-clutter RVM background segmentation/removal, is optimized for GPU speed, and includes on-the-fly insertion of Python scripts, via my custom Node Editor with openCV and onnx and mediapipe lots of other libraries available. You can do anything to make 'special effects'. I made a bunch of simple example/template scripts that are included upon install (camfiltergpu.com).

I think it's a great tool for experimentation, education, and streaming (e.g. twitch, Zoom, OBS, etc.), and next is to get some libre YOLO and such in there. I would much appreciate if anyone has suggestions. My app is geared more towards presenters and fast/live experimental video-processing work, but I think I have a powerful framework setup here where I can rapidly make code GUI changes and improvements for scientific, statistically quantifiable work. I've already got a microscopy version in the works.

My biggest problem right now is that I only have older laptop GPUs (nvid 2080, 3060, and amd 680M), so I basically have no idea if it will work on more modern Gpu cards, so maybe some of you could help.

Well, hope you-all find this at least interesting. I'm not an AI by the way, just an indie coder. Cheers!

(edit) you can see more info and download the installer at camfiltergpu.com. Note it might get flagged as 'virus'. There are absolutely no viruses or anything like that. Downloading only requests an email, no payment needed for the trial (fully capable) version.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays [Free] MultiTab Print: combine browser tabs into one print job or one PDF, all local

Value first: if you ever need to print a stack of web pages (bills, eligibility screens, receipts, documentation), you don't need to print them one at a time or go through an online converter that uploads your pages.

MultiTab Print is a free browser extension I built after years of doing exactly that with health insurance pages at work. Select tabs, right-click → Print Selected Tabs, check the combined preview, then print once or download one PDF.

  • No account, no telemetry, nothing uploaded. Pages are processed in your browser.
  • Text stays selectable. It isn't a screenshot tool.
  • Fully usable for free. There's an optional donation link, never required.
  • Limits: regular web pages only (not tabs showing a PDF); up to 50 tabs per job.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Introducing Pawtween, a desktop-based editor focused specifically one Tweening!

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

A little while ago I decided I wanted to take up tweening/puppet animation as a hobby, but all the tools I could find wouldn't work for me for one of several reasons:

  1. They were only available on mobile
  2. They cost money to use
  3. They had a complicated UI

Pawtween aims to focus specifically on tweening and puppet-style animations, and I've added many features I haven't seen on other apps. The interface is shown above, and as you can see, there was an attempt made to keep things relatively simple, with a built-in tutorial, meaning an easy learning curve.

The project is still in beta, and there will be regular updates released, but I'd appreciate if anyone interested could let me know (DMs), and I can give you a key. I am always looking for feedback, so if you've tested and have something to share, DM me.

Pawtween is always going to stay completely free, and I hope some other people can get some use out of it! Windows and Linux desktop builds available, with a web demo, and plans to expand to Mac soon!

The current web version is public right now on Github. Again, if you want the desktop version built (with additional features and GPU rendering), DM me for a key.

Github: https://github.com/Tornadowrath500/Pawtween

Again, I'm always looking for additional features to add, so if you have any ideas as to what I should add, please feel free to either comment here or DM me!

Disclaimer: This project was made with assistance from AI, all art that has been/is going to be added to the project will be drawn by myself, but the code was made with assistance from Claude. The project itself has no AI features or integration.

Yes, it's open source

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Workspace Launcher: a workspace manager and productivity toolkit built to make complex setups simple

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m the developer of Workspace Launcher, a Windows app I originally built for myself.

Preparing a work environment can mean opening apps and documents, configuring terminals, arranging windows across monitors and keeping projects organized. My goal is to make that process quick and intuitive, including for non-technical users.

Arrange your desktop, capture it as a workspace, and restore it when you need it. Save your apps, documents, browser tabs, terminals and window positions together. To update it, change your desktop and capture it again.

Workspaces can also include reusable app-specific configurations and automated actions. In supported applications, these actions run when you launch the workspace, helping prepare the tools you need. Word, Excel, Spotify and Docker are examples of supported integrations, alongside others — the available settings and actions depend on each integration. The aim is to restore a prepared environment and automate repetitive setup.

You can customize window layouts and zones across multiple monitors, manage virtual desktops and reuse existing workspace windows.

Workspace and window management are the core, alongside a productivity toolkit for everyday Windows use:

  • Keyboard shortcuts, voice commands and an omnibar for accessing actions quickly.
  • Transcription tools for turning speech into text.
  • An integrated AI assistant accessible through chat, voice and the omnibar, designed to provide proactive help throughout your day. It can use your desktop and selected windows as context to answer questions, summarize content, highlight controls, guide you through software and help perform supported actions. The omnibar also provides access to Windows system actions and lets you create custom functions for your own tasks.

As you use the app, it learns from your preferences, settings and recurring actions to offer more relevant recommendations and adapt to your workflow.

You choose your AI setup: connect providers such as OpenRouter or your own local AI server with compatible models and suitable hardware.

The aim is to make everyday Windows use faster, smoother and more comfortable — whether you’re developing, designing, studying or managing everyday tasks.

Want to see the app working? The full English walkthrough below demonstrates the main features, although it doesn’t cover the entire toolkit or every recent improvement. Development is ongoing.

Would this fit your workflow? What would you want it to save, restore or automate?

Available on the Microsoft Store with a free Starter plan, paid plans and a 14-day Ultimate trial.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays The 63 tool media processing app with wireless file transfer from your phone to your PC

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hello everyone, i would like to share an app that i have been working on for almost a year-- for web developers & engineers, e-commerce & store managers, streamers and gamers, and much more.

It's not like any typical file convertor or compressor and that's it-- it's a 63 tool, lightweight media processing toolkit for almost all day-to-day tasks that you could think of: change playback speeds of videos/audio, add/replace audio tracks, split image screenshots to equal parts, watermark, volume adjust, and much more.

It also has the Workflow Builder, which allows you to chain multiple tools into re-usable workflows (e.g., Resize ➔ WebP ➔ Watermark)

Recently, i released v2.0 which added the Local Bridge feature: it allows you to wirelessly send photos, videos, and audio directly from your smartphone (iOS/Android) to your PC over local Wi-Fi or mobile hotspot. You just scan a QR code on screen to pair instantly; no cables, no cloud uploads, and no iTunes required. Run various tools like compress, convert, extract audio etc., and watch a real-time progress bar directly on your phone. When processing is done, receive the new files back directly on your phone.

This app was built with Tauri + Rust. The installer is under 54 MB and idle RAM usage is ~6.2 MB. It is the perfect toolkit app that can sit on your PC for any media related task you can think of.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I made a free Windows app that lights up your side screens with the colours of your main screen (Overscan by StarSync)

Post image
1 Upvotes

About a month ago I posted my five-screen setup on an anime sub, with the side screens glowing in the colours of the anime I was watching. A number of people asked what software it was. At the time, it was just a pile of scripts. So I spent the last few weeks turning it into a proper app - and here it is.

What It Does

Overscan reads the colours at the edges of your main screen and paints them across the monitors beside it as a soft glow, live. Think of the backlight on some TVs, except it is your other monitors doing it.

How It Works

The glow is drawn on the wallpaper layer, the same approach Wallpaper Engine and Lively use. On Windows 11 24H2 the desktop changed, and normal drawing on that layer no longer shows up. At first, it only worked on two of my screens, because they are scaled to 125% (they are physically smol) and that takes a different path through Windows. Probably also because they were plugged into the iGPU, where the other three were on the dGPU. The fix was to draw through DirectComposition instead, which is how modern apps hand frames to Windows. I didn't really mess with other things too much to investigate further. The colours come from a tiny 320x180 copy of the main screen, so it stays light: about 100 MB of memory and 25 updates a second by default.

Download: https://starsync.dev/overscan (installer, or a portable zip if you do not want to install anything)

It is still early; if it does something odd on your setup, use the "Report a problem" button in Settings > Help, or tell me here. I am particularly keen to hear from laptop and monitor setups, and from Windows 10 users.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Meet Notchify, a Dynamic Island for Windows.

Post image
0 Upvotes

A small island at the edge of your screen keeps your time, battery and music in view. Hover over it to open your widgets and controls.

Lyrics follow your music word by word, even when the island is closed. Expand the player for playback controls and fully synced lyrics, click a line to jump to that moment, or pin the lyrics widget while you work.

Choose from over 20 widgets, including weather, calendar, system stats, audio controls, world clocks, timers and Pomodoro. Arrange them in three layouts to suit how you use your desktop.

Keep text, links and images in your clipboard history, open image previews for a closer look, and drag files into the tray for later. Start a screen recording from the island and find your saved recordings in the same place.

Notifications, incoming calls and connected devices appear when needed, then make room for your work.

Personalize it with 14 themes and custom colors. Choose island or notch style, adjust the size, and place it at the top, bottom or either side of your screen.

Available for Windows 10 & 11 on the Microsoft Store.

Also, there is a live demo on my website: Notchify Live Demo

Discussion I’m making free, offline apps for old/budget PCs (not open source yet).

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Heyy, upfront: what I’m making is free to use, but NOT open source yet. I know that’s not the usual thing here, so I’d rather get honest opinions (and hear how I should even make this open source) than build in a bubble.

Some background: I started making these back in 2019 when I was still in high school. My aunt started a company back then and I saw how much software costs. I also saw that she had a legit budget laptop (Intel Celeron), and just running Outlook and Canva was enough to make it lag.

When I started uni I also didn’t have the best tech and struggled to use most heavy-duty software. I got an old 2016 HP all-in-one PC as a gift, with Windows 8.1 on it, and it was super slow.

All of this inspired me to make software that runs on Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10 and 11, and uses less than 100MB of RAM. I’ve managed that so far with Skets (a Canva alternative) and Email (an Outlook/HubSpot style email tool), and I’m busy working on 8 more. My main hurdle at this moment is making them as ram efficient as possible. Other tools like mini CRM / Stock Manager / Cash (which is a mini accounting system.) Are still too big at like 20+Mb each, whilst Skets is 301Kb and Email is 274Kb.

The idea: it’s free to download and use by anyone. It’s 100% offline (NOT web apps - the only one that requires the web is the Email one). It’s supposed to help startups with no money, especially in poor areas, get semi nice software that runs on older/budget computers. So when you don’t have money for HubSpot or CRM software, or you don’t have the processing power or wifi for Canva, you install Your Work (YW) apps. I am thinking of naming the model YW (Your Work). Idk I like the name.

So a few of the apps that will be in YW:

  1. Billing (This is for Invoicing / statements etc.)
  2. Clients (The CRM tool I was talking about.)
  3. Stock (This is basically an inventory / stock in / ordering system.) - I'm thinking of combining this with Shop
  4. Shop (This is a simple POS used to run idk something like a coffee shop.)
  5. Tasks (Escentially if Notion / MS OneNote and Trello had a baby and it links to your Ical (Icalendar) / Gmail Calendar basicaly.)
  6. Recon (My personal Fav, you upload the other companies statements / GL + your's.) Outline is basically like having 3 Excel sheets open at once. Left = Theirs / Right = Ours and middle populates as you match ours and theirs. You can also export the files.)
  7. WhatsThat (You export your whatsapps as a .zip, upload the .zip file here and it saves them so you can go back and see here what happened (Looks and feels like whatsapp web but offline.) Images also view normally.)
  8. PDF (This is my most ambisious one, it is escentially like PDF 24 (ya know the website) BUT it is offline and supposed to be less than 3 Mb (the .exe) in size and supposed to use less than 100Mb of data when active. I'm currently at like 240Mb and it uses a LOT of ram, so we have a long way to go.)

BTW, all of these have their own formats which can be used by other interlinked systems. E.g. on Skets I have a .emsign (Email signature template) and .emtemp (Email Template) which I can save somewhere / email etc.
I also have .recon (So I can work on a recon file, same where I have worked and send the .recon to a customer / supplier and have them see the recon.) Or just normal excel exports. etc.
Also .customers (Which contains emails and contact info, used when sending Marketing Broadcast messages and inside the Clients app etc.) etc.

Writing batch scripts and configuring Windows Task Scheduler every time I needed a Robocopy job was getting annoying, so I made a lightweight GUI tool called Robocopy Scheduler.

What it does:

  • Visual controls for common Robocopy flags (/MIR, /ZB, /MT, etc.)
  • Built-in scheduler (Hourly, Daily, Cron) so you don't need Task Scheduler
  • Keeps the PC awake during active backup jobs
  • Real-time log viewer + CSV export
  • Portable app (just extract and run, no installer or extra runtimes required)

Free for personal use. Hope someone finds it useful!

Software support I made a tool to choose which internet connection each app uses on Windows

Post image

I have two connections at home (cable + a second router over a USB Wi-Fi stick) and Windows kept putting everything on the cable. When something big was downloading, everything else was slow while the second line did nothing.

So I made Net Switch. It shows the apps using your internet, sorted by speed, and you pick which line each one uses. New connections move right away.

Other things it does:

  • Combine both lines: spreads new connections from the apps you haven't moved across both lines. Helps anything that downloads in parallel. It does not split a single connection, so one big single-stream download still gets one line's speed. That would need a bonding server like Speedify, which this doesn't use.
  • Failover: if a line drops, or stays connected but has no internet, its apps go to the other line and come back when it recovers.
  • Live speed per line and per app, and a tray panel for the common switches.

Things to know before trying it:

  • It needs admin rights, because it routes traffic through a virtual network adapter (sing-box in TUN mode)
  • IPv4 only while routing is on
  • The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn you. Each release has SHA256 sums and a GitHub build attestation if you want to check the file first.
  • No telemetry. The only traffic it makes on its own is a small connectivity check through each line.

It's MIT licensed, and the source is all there. I've mainly tested it on Windows 11 with Ethernet + USB Wi-Fi, so bug reports from other setups are very welcome.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Better Stickies: a simple, powerful and privacy-first note taking app. Paste anything in a note and it will format and save it on your desktop. Windows, Linux, macOS (soon). Offline, no account, no telemetry.

Hey,

I am the developer of BetterStickies and this my weekly marketing post (so more people learn about BetterStickies)

What it is, for anyone new

It is a note taking app with super cool exclusive features while it looks and acts as sticky notes app. It works on Windows, Linux, macOS (soon). Offline, no account, no telemetry. Built with PySide6 so it's actually native, not another Electron app eating your RAM.

This app is a hidden gem and I am not exaggerating, I received so much positive reviews to be confident when I say this, it looks like a sticky note but does much more than you could think a sticky note app could do and it can replace all complex note taking apps if you aren't into that type of productivity.

The main thing it does that other sticky apps don't: you can paste or drag anything into a note.

  • Files and folders become clickable shortcuts, and you can drag them back out to your file manager
  • Screenshots and images paste straight from the clipboard, PDFs and images get a hover preview, and double-click opens an image at full resolution
  • Pasted code gets detected and formatted into a code block automatically, no AI and no network, in about 50ms. Ctrl+M when it guesses wrong
  • Rich text, links, plain text, all formatted properly instead of rejected

The second thing it does so well over other stickies apps: customization, you can customize font, colors, transparency, add background image or even a moving GIF per each note, a real delight to use

Notes have tabs now. Up to three pages inside one note, each with its own text, scroll position and undo history. Ctrl+PgDown and Ctrl+PgUp to move between them, Ctrl+Shift+N for a new one, all rebindable. If you have a small screen this is the feature: one note on the desktop, three notes' worth of content in it.

Other things it does exceptionally well:

  • Reminders with sound and desktop notifications
  • GIF and image backgrounds per note (because why not)
  • RTL text support, and the app plus its full guide are in 12 languages
  • Pin a note to lock both position and editing
  • Ctrl+scroll to zoom text without opening settings
  • Checkboxes with strikethrough when done and nesting
  • Snap to grid with an adjustable grid size
  • Export to .txt, .md or .json, so you can back them up with whatever cloud you like
  • Proper Linux support, tested on KDE, GNOME and Cinnamon (COSMIC coming)
  • On the Microsoft Store and the Snap store, Flathub coming soon

The free version now has exactly one limit. It used to have three: a note cap, a reminders cap, and a cap on animated GIF backgrounds. The reminder and GIF limits are gone entirely, so the free version now has every feature, and the only thing left is a budget of 4 note slots (an extra tab uses a slot).

Paid version is very generous and cheap, it costs currently $7 and you get the premium version without any limits, free updates, unlimited devices, and also windows, linux and macOS (coming out this month) builds so you won't pay again if you move from windows to linux or use both.

This a side project for me and I don't intend to milk it, I want it to be sustainable to survive. The price is low to keep it accessible, not because the quality of the app is low, this not a vibe coded app and if you give it a try, you will understand the difference between Better Stickies and other Stickies apps.

As always, if you try it and something annoys you, tell me here. Most new features and fixes are built on users feedback (tens of thousands are using BetterStickies today)

Release Proview — An open-source PDF and image viewer with markup, handwritten signatures and OCR

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'd like to share a little side project that I hope you'll find useful. Proview is an app for viewing images and PDFs, with a few extra tools for everyday tasks.

I was inspired by Preview, the built-in viewer on macOS: it opens a wide range of files, lets you make basic edits to images and PDFs, and makes it easy to add a signature to a document, all through a simple interface.

Since I use Linux at work, I've always wanted a similar experience on my PC. With AI tools now available, I figured I was just a couple of prompts away from building one.

Proview runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, and it's free and open source under the AGPL-3.0-or-later license.

It currently supports:

  • Viewing, cropping, rotating and annotating images.
  • PDF text highlighting, redaction, page reordering, merging and splitting.
  • Reusable handwritten signatures: draw one or import one from a photo or scan, with automatic background removal and vectorization.
  • Optional signature-library sync between computers using Google Drive or S3-compatible storage. Sync uploads the saved signature library; documents opened for editing stay on your computer.
  • OCR for copying text from images and scanned documents.
  • Viewing STL files, a common format for 3D meshes.

PDF exports preserve native content: added text, ordinary shapes and vector signatures stay as vectors rather than turning the whole page into an image.

I built it with help from AI tools. The app uses Go and Fyne, with MuPDF and pdfcpu for PDFs and Tesseract for OCR.

I'd appreciate any feedback. If you run into a bug, please open an issue with your OS and the steps to reproduce it.

Other Software research (need helppp)

Hi everyone! 😊 I’m Jie Ying, currently working on my research about how AI coding tools affect the way software developers think, make decisions and spot errors.

If you use tools like ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, GitHub Copilot or Google Gemini in your work as a software developer, I’d really appreciate your help with this short survey. It takes just 5 to 10 minutes and your responses will remain anonymous.

Thank you so much for your time and support! If you know any friends or colleagues who might be able to help, please feel free to share this with them too.

Release I made OpenChatMix, a lightweight ChatMix app for SteelSeries headsets (no GG or Sonar needed)

Post image

SteelSeries moved ChatMix on Windows into their Sonar software, so the dial on the headset only works while GG and Sonar are running. That was the only thing I still used GG for, so I made a small app that does it on its own.

What it does

  • Reads the ChatMix dial over USB and balances game and chat audio per app
  • Optional virtual device mode like Sonar, with a 10-band parametric EQ, bass boost, voice clarity and smart volume
  • Native headset settings: Engine EQ presets and custom curve, mic volume, sidetone, gain, display
  • Screensaver for the GameDAC's OLED so it doesn't burn in
  • Works with any headset through hotkeys, even a single key like a keyboard volume knob

Size: about 1 MB, portable, a few MB of RAM.

I did the reverse engineering of the headset protocol myself, and the code was written with AI. I've been using it daily on my Nova Pro Wired. Source and download: https://github.com/Swiftlyx/OpenChatMix
