Channel Island from 'The Sock Obsession' by Summer Lee

Thank you u/Swimming_Juice_9752 for posting about this pattern. I've just finished a pair in Rowan Sock, Coral and doubled the leg length to make them knee highs. I also added an inch to the cuffs in case I need to add garters to stop them slipping down.

I enjoy wearing knee highs as if you are going to knit a fancy pants pattern, you may as well go big.

The pattern appeals to me as my great great grandfather was a master mariner in the Channel Islands.

Question about sock knitting machines

Does anyone use sock knitting machines to create the tubes? I looked online and its either the 48 needle ones that are reasonable(ish) or the ones with 64 (which matches hand knitting) that are in the thousands.... is there anything that isnt thousands of dollars and can make adult socks?

Midwest Nice Socks

Socks for a friend based on Midwest Nice Socks by Sock Witchery but I didn't take the pattern down the foot. The yarn is unknown origin and fibre from a charity shop. Not sure the pattern and the yarn are a match made in heaven but kind of works.

A recent finished pair

This is the slip it simple pattern in drops fabel wheat and unicorn party and is now firmly one of my favourite pairs I've made!

My first time using fabel and my first time using self striping yarn and I'm really impressed with the quality of the yarn considering how affordable it is. These have been worn and washed a couple of times and have zero pilling

Tried to match the stripes but they still turned out like sisters not twins 🤷🏻

Calf increases for toe-up socks?

I’m making a pair of socks in the style of the Crackerjack Socks, where each row represents a game played by a baseball team. These are a gift for a long-distance friend who is a different size than me, so trying on is not an option.

I’m quickly realizing these are going to be taller than I expected (probably 7-8” in the leg before adding the cuff). Do I need to add increases as the socks get taller, to account for the calf? Or am I overthinking this?

Softest Sock Yarn

I'm on a mission to make the softest socks possible, and I'd love some suggestions for what yarns you'd consider for this project.

I'm interested in having them be sturdy, so ideally some nylon included. But I'm willing to sacrifice some longevity for softness.

Thanks for any suggestions!

My first pair!

Just came here to post my first pair of socks! After trial and error attempting to learn through YouTube videos I finally signed up for a basic sock knitting class at my LYS! These were originally for a friend, but given that it was my first pair, there was a bit of a learning curve! I decided to keep these for myself and make her a matching pair now that I’m a little more experienced!

Pattern is Vanilla Socks on 9” circulars by CrazySockLady
Yarn is Friends Sock Yarn from Hobbii

Let me know if yall have any fun tips and tricks I should know about! Especially on creating a more rounded toe.

I’d used DPNs before and wasn’t a huge fan. Picked up a 9” circular before after trip last week and I’m in love! We’ll see how the heel and toe goes (I brought a long cable for magic loop), but I think I may have found the key to making more socks!

Pattern: Hermione’s Everyday Sock
Yarn: Patton Kroy Socks FX in Clover Colors
Needles: Chiaogoo 9”, 2.75 mm

Heel Options for Blind Knitter

I’m looking for some help! Right now I’m working on a toe-up sock. There’s not a pattern per se, I’m just knitting with a formula. But my friend tried to show me how to do a heel turn involving wrapped stitches and I really struggled with it because I found it challenging to find the wrap.

When I did a cuff down the pattern used slip stitches at the end of each row, alternating which side it was on. Then you picked up through the holes at the edges of the rows as you went around after finishing the heel flap. But I’m not sure there’s a comparable technique in the toe-up variety.

Does anyone have heel turn technique suggestions for avoiding the wrapped stitches?

Question about pattern instructions

Hi, I just finished knitting the leg of this sock and the pattern says for the heel:

”Row 1: Knit heel stitches, slip last knitted stitch to instep needle, turn.”

I am knitting magic loop, so my stitches are divided in half. Does slipping the stitch to the instep needle mean like, physically moving it around to the other side of the cord where the instep stitches are?

Anyone have reccomendations for more advanced/complex sock patterns? + seeking advice on laddering with DPN's

In the progress of knitting my first basic sock (Bendigo Woollen Mills Everyday Sock Pattern free)

Wanted to know if anyone had any more advanced patterns (like with colourwork, ribbing or other designs) they can reccomend, ideally from Australia (I've found it very hard to find appropriate gauge yarn needed in international pattern that i can buy in Aus)

Regarding the laddering, initially I had terrible laddering, I watched some YouTube videos that reccomended keeping the two DPNs very close as well as tightening the 2nd and 3rd stitches. This has helped quite alot, although there is still some laddering visible.

Does anyone have any advice they can give me on what I may be still doing wrong or anything else I can do to prevent this ladder?

Thank you!

Substituting yarn - advice

I'm fairly new to knitting socks, just finished my first pair. And I wanted to start a new one and found a really beautiful skein for my new project.

Unfortunately I just don't understand how you substitute different yarn weight?

I tried to find a pattern that fitted my skein but couldn't find one to my liking so I chose one with a different kind of yarn. But no matter how many articles I read or yt videos I watch I don't understand the concept of altering the pattern to fit to your yarn weight.

So if anyone has any advice or better explanation I would be forever grateful.

For example: I wanted to use this pattern for a size 41-43: https://www.garnstudio.com/pattern.php?id=12632&cid=19

They use a group B yarn, 50g and rougly 110m. Their swatch would be 21 x 28 rows

And my yarn is a lot thinner: 100g and 400m, with 30 x 25 rows for a swatch

I tried to calculate it and came to the conclusion that I needed to cast 80 stitches on instead of 60 but it seems way too big and now I'm just lost.

Messed up while purling on the heel flap of a sock :(

Thumbnail

I’m knitting socks for the first time, as well as knitting in the round for the first time as well, and I made a mistake with my heel flap.

The pattern is Vanilla Socks in Worsted Weight by BlueMouseKnits and I have just began the heel flap. This is the pattern I have to follow for the heel flap:

Row 1: SL1P wyib, K1, repeat from\*
Row 2: SL1P wyif, purl across
Row 3: SL2PW wyib K1 SL1PW wyib, repeat from to last 2 stitches, K2
Row 4: SL1P wyif, purl acros

I’m on row 4 (wrong side) I slipped the first stitch purl wise and then started to purl. On my very first purl I have messed it up. My yarn was in front but I definitely just fudged up the technique.

It produced a loop, that I put back on my left needle. Now my working yarn is on the 3rd stitch of my left needle. I am supposed to have 16 stitches on my left needle for the heel flap, but I have 17.

Is there any way to fix this? Or would it be best to frog my heel flap and start it over?

Any help would be appreciated!!

“Longer” heel flap: decreasing stitches

I’m so sorry if this is a stupid question. I’ve been searching all over the internet and can’t find a straight answer, and I’m starting to get stressed.

I’m knitting a test heel for my first sock, and the heel flap instructions state to repeat the pattern to 6cm. However, I then have to pick up 16 stitches. If you have to pick up 1 stitch per slipped stitch, then it implies that 6 cm = 32 stitches.

The problem is that my row gauge is a bit tight, and I’m going to have 38 stitches to 6 cm. I also suspect I’ll have to try a longer heel flap anyway, because I have high arches.

Can I just knit a few extra gusset decrease repeats, or am I going to have to do maths to accommodate it? I hardly ever start knitting fitted things because gauge is the bane of my life. I never meet it. I really appreciate any advice. I just want to be able to knit a decent sock.

Pair of socks #10
A little backstory - my partner and I have been going out for 2 years, in the last 10 months I've been knitting lots of socks, mostly for loved ones. My partner hasn't been wanting anything fibre arts related that I've made so far. However we went yarn shopping for me on my birthday back in August and after a lot of yarn squishing they picked out some yarn for socks for them.
Partner wasn't too sure if the socks would be worn as we are both quite sensitive to texture.
Originally I was going to knit these for them for Christmas but they were requested at slightly short notice as a birthday present.
In the week and a little bit they've had them they've been worn 4 whole times!!!
I was immediately given suggestions with how to improve for the next pair.

These were knit on 2.25mm needles, 72 stitches with a standard heel flap and gusset.
Yarn is Symfonie Terra in Midnight Orchid.
Going to try 68 stitches next time for a tighter fit and a short row heel as I've been told they can feel the "right angle" of the heel flap and gusset. I might also go down a needle size for the cuff.
As much as I'd love to knit these for Christmas they might have to wait until valentines day.

Handknit socks for the win!

Honestly just wanted to show off this yarns striping that I bought from Goodwill two years ago. I don't recall the branding but I remember it being 100% wool. This is the second pair of socks I have knit. The first pair I had gifted to my MIL and forgot to take pictures before I gifted them.

Using today to share my incredibly niche hydropower socks. I just started knitting socks this year, definitely lots to learn to get better, but I'm having so much fun!

I didn't find any hydropower patterns (shocking lol) so I ended up making my own chart to show a very basic overview of how water flows through a hydropower plant :)

side note, I'm impressed by how y'all are able to get good pics of your socks! this was hard!

Heel turn in vertical stripes, which color do I use?

Thumbnail

Hi all, I am making the Snow Under Cedars socks and am at the heel turn. The heel flap is made of vertical stripes in 2 alternating colors.

However now that I am turning the heel, I don't know which color of yarn to use when p2tog or SSK on the shaping decreases in order to maintain the striped pattern; the directions don't specify to use MC or CC.

I searched through project notes but no luck. The designer has sadly passed away. Has anyone encountered this issue with vertically striped heels, and what do you do? Thanks so much in advance.

Help with crafting a heel

I’m a newer sock knitter and was wondering if it is possible to combine two heel constructions. I like the look at durability of the slip stitch heel, but my favourite heel turn has been the German short row so there are no stitches to pick up. Is it possible to combine these two heel options?
