A pretty baby California King snake. Wiggling the tail is a protective behavior from the predators (birds) to imitate a rattlesnake movement.

TW: frozen feeders

I bought quail as a treat/more calcium in My rosy boas diet, but as you can see they are bigger than the mice she's used to........ And I'm unsure what to do with this quail now. I have cats but they are extremely picky. They also have breaks and feathers, I don't feel comfortable offering something THIS different in size and fully feathered to my snakes, especially my milksnake as you can she her head is barely the size of my thumb, my rosy boa just barely outgrew the size of my thumb. What should I do? How/where do I sell these without getting in trouble? I'm in Vancouver WA. Please help!

Update: reweighing my snakes, but I still think they are too big, and I've contacted a local family owned rescue and will most likely be donating to there.

her name is squishy, and she is very special to me. she was a bit spicy for the first 6 months, but she has calmed down very nicely since then. i don't handle her every day, sometimes i don't handle her every week, because i've been doing mostly choice based with her. i'll leave her enclosure open for like an hour, let her think about it, and she can come out if she pleases. her spice when i got her was because she didn't trust me and she didn't like being touched certain ways, but now that i have gained her trust, she's a very good girl.
not a beginner species, but certainly not as mean of a species as some people make them out to be. they're very opinionated, and if you don't respect their boundaries, they're gonna bite you faster than most other species would. but that doesn't mean they're all assholes.
squishy is my first advanced species, i only owned a corn snake and two boas prior to her. i got her for my 18th birthday, actually. far less experience than most people would recommend, but with patience and respect, we made it work out. i can't say i recommend them, but i absolutely love her. if you're ever considering one, don't write them off as being feisty their whole lives. she's 2 years old and very sweet. i can't speak for every individual animal, but if you treat them with respect, you'll probably have a better experience than most people say you will.

Pet Snake Pictures How many snakes is too many? (Help me talk myself into or out of more snakes )

I know this is subjective, but at what point did you feel like you had too many snakes?

I’m relatively new to snake keeping and have quickly become OBSESSED. I want ALL the snakes šŸ˜‚ But realistically, I know I can’t keep every species I fall in love with, and I don’t want to lose one of the things I love about keeping snakes: how relatively low-maintenance they can be.

I like being able to give my snakes proper enclosures, enjoy them, and still have time for my other hobbies and life in general. I don’t want to reach a point where my entire life revolves around maintaining my collection.

For context, I currently have two baby boas: a female BCI and a male Colombian rainbow boa.
Here are the species I’m seriously considering adding to the collection. Help me talk myself into or out of these! šŸ˜‚

Brazilian rainbow boa: This is the species that got me interested in snakes in the first place. A high-red BRB is absolutely stunning. I’m considering getting an adult or subadult because I’d love to have a snake with some decent size sooner rather than later. I know my female BCI will eventually get pretty big, but that’s still a few years away.

Carpet python: Do I even need to explain myself here? šŸ˜‚ I’m dying to own one.

African Cape house snake or an Antaresia python: These feel like relatively easy additions. I could fit another smaller enclosure into my existing setup without having to rearrange furniture or dedicate an entire room to the hobby. I also love the idea of having a smaller snake that I can handle without much fuss.

Super dwarf retic: I’ve bought into the hype, hahaha. I really want one! But even a super dwarf retic can eventually need a substantial enclosure, and I’m not sure I’m ready to commit that much space in my house to another large-ish snake.

I realize these are very different species with different husbandry requirements, and I’m not planning on getting all of them at once. I’m trying to be realistic about what I can responsibly commit to long-term.

Pictures on my 2 babies and their current setups. Feel free to give me your 2 cents.

Months ago my snake ā€˜Parasite’ ( yes that’s her real name I give my animals stupid odd names ) was adopted by me from a good local pet store. She was sold to me as a super vanilla ball python but I have noticed she has slight neurological issues like spider morphs and suspiciously looks similar to some spider morphs. Please help me I want to know what’s wrong with her.

Wild Snake Photos and Questions - Not for ID A Young Banded Rock Rattlesnake in [Arizona]

Post image

I ran into this little Banded Rock Rattlesnake on a search for samples in the Sky Islands earlier in the year. It was found right where expected, in an isolated rock pile that gets a little more sun than the rest of the ground in the area. When it saw me, rather than rattle, it opted to silently slip into the rocks, but wasn't quite fast enough. I captured it briefly to get a blood sample from its tail and other information, let it go on its way.

Pet Snake Questions I have a problem.

I really like snakes, I think they're super adorable and cool I want one.

See here's the problem: I have this tendency to hyper fixate on one thing, idk why it just happens. And so I'm worried if I somehow get a snek my hyper fixation will wear off and then I will just ignore the snek and be a terrible owner and not care for it and I don't want to be an animal abuser, all sneaks deserve good homes!

So what's I like owning a snek? Specifically a ball python.

Another problem is that my dad thinks snakes stink terribly so he won't let me get one but IM JUST IMAGINING OKAY?

I've owned a bearded dragon and it lived for 7 years, I wasn't a super amazing owner but I really think reptiles are kewl.

Pet Snake Questions How long should I wait until I have my first handling session with my core snake after bringing it home? It has been here for 2 days now. I haven't touched it at all today but I did touch it the day after bringing it home so I could put things in the cage.

I only handle her briefly for a few seconds after bringing her home and after customizing her cage the next day. I didn't touch her at all today to give her time to rest and adjust through a new environment finally. But when should I have my first handling session to start getting her used to being held. We plan on feeding her tomorrow because that would be the time to do it since when we bought her she was Fed last Friday. So we can't hold her for 48 hours after is feeding if she eats. Would it be okay to have a handling session for about 5 minutes an hour before feeding her?

Pet Snake Questions My brother got his ball python a jar for her enclosure, but she doesn't leave it often, is it a good idea to keep it or not?

My brother got a ball python just shy of a year ago and after a few months, she got a bigger terrarium and we put a prepared jar inside. She seems to find it peaceful as she doesn't leave it much, it seems to me like a good thing, as snakes are rather nocturnal so it's normal she'll stay hidden during the day, I'm just worried that she made herself so comfortable that she doesn't use any other part of the terrarium than this jar in particular. She also seems to have grown more frightened of people ever since she got the jar, as if human interaction became frightening, because the jar wasn't all that close.

I fear that a jar can work negatively on her attitude towards us, but it's also the perfect environment for disease to spread. Animals are not knowledgeable in the medical department and any uncleaned snake skin, blood or even feces could be a perfect ground for health concerns.

I need some advice, I don't want to insist on taking away her hiding spot, I'm just concerned about her wellbeing and relationship with people around her. What would you suggest?

General Question / Discussion DIY Background for Bioactive Setup

Thumbnail

I’ve been having a hard time getting a straight, general ā€œrule of thumbā€ through YouTube and other groups (mostly due to my own inadequate descriptions) and I’m trying to figure out if I need to buy a sealant of some sort for my foam.

I’m planning this for a bioactive Garter Snake enclosure, enclosure size is 4x2x2.

Firstly, I’ve already started cutting my foam into fake rocks for ledges, etc. Do I need something to seal it for it to not be damaged by water in the enclosure or potentially toxic? I’ve got the cement paint and foam spray.

Second, silicone. Is there a safe silicone that I can use (preferably in black) that isn’t aquarium safe silicone, which I’m struggling to find? I’m going to use this to line the bottom for a water tight seal, along with a plastic painters drop cloth cut to size for added protection. Same with Gorilla Glue as I plan to use this for the wood I have to secure it, along with the spray foam for extra strength.

Third, my enclosure is made of a fake wood it seems. Is there anything that I can safely use to coat the inside to make it more waterproof?

I can’t really think of anything else in terms of the decorating. Pictures are of the babies I will be getting to choose from (they are unfortunately from a wild caught mom that my friend did not know was pregnant so if you can tell me any morphs you see, that would be cool), the progress I have been making on their enclosure and the materials I’ve currently got.

The two wood photos are a general idea of where I want to place them. The foam background will not be touching all the way to the bottom of the enclosure, but I want to be extra cautious.
