I had one heck of a time at SFU. I figured after reading the posts in this sub that maybe some people can benefit from some of the lessons I learnt along the way. I got into SFU straight from high school and totally unprepared for adult learning. I got accepted into the engineering program. I messed up with a GPA of 0.00 in my first semester and that followed me through for the next few years.
I decided to change my major to Criminology. I Went on Academic Probation and then back on track. After 2 semesters after an exceptional semester I was taken off BOT only to mess up right away and got hit with a Required to Withdraw 3 years in. GPA was still barely 2.00 after all that time.
Took some time off and did some reflecting. Taking a semester to just work and then the following I semester I went to Langara. In that time I wrote to appeal my RTW. Going to Langara was the best decision I ever made because it supercharged me for adult learning. Its just so well geared to slowly teach you everything you need to know for post secondary.
My appeal was approved and I returned to SFU 2 semesters later. Returned with a new set of skills and tools and crushed a bunch of courses with A’s and B+. Retook the classes I failed in my first year because trying to up your GPA with failed classes is like trying to walk with a chain and ball around your leg. Once I redid those, I was able to declare my Major which was almost 4 years in and graduated 3 years after that. 6 years 2 semesters in total. 2.75 CGPA and 3.25 counting the last 60 credits.
lessons learnt
- Never go to university straight unless your goal demands it. Trying to get pre-med or pharmacy sooner.
- Failed courses and GPA will weigh you down forever unless you retake it.
- Back on Track is an amazing program with lots of power over your GPA. Use that time to refine your skills before it expires and don’t leave the program sooner than you need.
- Go to college first, your failed courses and low GPA will not follow you. Just your credits and all the lessons your learnt. its half the cost, friendly environment and more approachable profs.
- Don’t take criminology, it’s the greatest waste of your time and money unless you want to teach it. Any job in the field can be obtained without a Crim degree. A crim degree handcuffs you to a specific set of jobs that you may not like.
- I always took classes based on Rate my Prof. I had wacky profs just speak about random stuff and give us crazy exams unrelated to the text book and just their weird stories. In the end the prof gives you the mark not the class.
