First time using spirit gum. I think I messed up…

• Upvotes

Hopefully this is the right place to get some help. I have this gore-y clown look that I do sometimes. I use scar wax to make it look like there are triangles cut out above and below my eyes. Last time I tried the wax didn't stick well (it was a different brand of wax than I used to use), so this time I put spirit gum under it. It wasn't until I went to go take everything off that I realized it might not have been the best idea to use it so close to my eyes. I was able to get the scar wax off easily without the remover, but there's still makeup and adhesive on my skin. Everything I read says you shouldn't use the adhesive or remover near your eyes. Is there a good way to get it off, or am I just screwed?

Please help me with this look - Zombie Thriller MJ

Hi All

Going for a variation of this look and wanted to see if my thought process is right - -

(Not a SFX guy but I am a professional sculptor so I'm also not like brand new...)

Was going to take scar wax and just exaggerate the orbital areas, add to the cheekbones, and kind of build up the nose where bone meets cartilage...

Then a layer of liquid latex over the wax to blend and seal it -

Then cream makeup over the top -

2 questions - will that work, and are there user friendly brands of wax and cream makeup that are recommended - "amateur grade" level?

Thank you

Hi trying to do a costume that looks like a stone woman. Wondering what material I could put over fabric to get this textured rough look.
I think these are done with concrete but I’d still like to be able to move in it

Upturned nose help Halloween

Hello lovely SFX people!

My partner and I are planning to go as Edward and Tubbs from The League of Gentlemen for Halloween this year, because apparently a normal couples costume just wasn’t unsettling enough. Niche I know 😅

I’m currently trying to figure out how on earth to recreate that wonderfully distinctive, upturned nose situation. I’m determined to get the look as close as possible, but I’m a little stumped on how to achieve it!

Would anyone have any advice on how to create the shape? I’m wondering whether prosthetics, latex, silicone, or some clever makeup wizardry might be the way to go. I’m very much an amateur in this department, so any tips, tutorials, product recommendations, or words of wisdom would be hugely appreciated.

I come to you humbly, with no SFX expertise of my own, but with a burning desire to look like I belong behind the counter of a shop in Royston Vasey haha!
Thank you in advance :)

Need advice on face & body paint for my Frankie Stein Halloween cosplay! (Beginner)

Post image

Hi everyone!

I’m planning to dress up as Frankie Stein from Monster High for Halloween, and I want to paint my skin a light, muted greyish-green color to match her skin tone.

My plan is to paint my entire body, including my face, arms, legs, etc. I want the paint to last throughout the night, especially since I’ll be partying, dancing and probably sweating.

I have quite a bit of experience with regular makeup and I’m pretty confident in my makeup skills, but I’ve never worked with face or body paint before. I’m mainly struggling with figuring out which products and techniques would work best.

For my face:
I was considering buying the Athena oil-based face paint palette, but I’m not sure whether that’s the best option.
I want to create a full makeup look on top of the green base, including contour, blush, highlights and black stitches.

I’m considering a few different approaches:
All oil-based: Use oil-based face paint for the base, contour, blush and stitches, thee set everything.

Water-based + powder: Use water-based face paint for the base, set it, apply powder contour and blush, and then paint the stitches with water-based paint.

Oil-based + water-based details: Use oil-based paint for the base, set it, and then apply the stitches with water-based paint.

Oil-based + powder: Use oil-based paint for the base, set it, and then use powder products for contour and blush.

Which method would give me the smoothest, most skin-like finish while still being long-lasting? I’m also open to completely different techniques!

For my body:
I’m planning to paint my visible skin, including my arms, neck and chest.

Would you recommend oil-based or water-based body paint? I’m especially concerned about sweating, rubbing and transfering.

Are there any brands you’d recommend that offer good coverage, durability and value for money?

Tights or body paint for my legs?
I’m also considering wearing opaque, light green tights instead of painting my legs, since it might be pretty cold on Halloween.

Would that be a better option? I’m a little worried about the tights not matching the color of my face and body paint. Has anyone tried something similar or have any tips?

I also want to recreate the black stitches Frankie has on her legs. Would it be possible to paint those details directly onto the tights using water-based or oil-based face paint? Would the paint stay in place, or would it crack, smudge or rub off as the fabric stretches?

Would fabric paint be a better alternative, or is there another technique you’d recommend for drawing detailed stitches on tights?

I’m open to using different products for my face and body if that would t better results.

Hair:
I have very long, thick, dark brown hair, and I want to recreate Frankie’s iconic black-and-white hair.

I’m debating between using white/silver clip-in extensions, temporary white hair color spray, or white hair chalk.

I’m a little worried that extensions might look unnatural or too obvious in my thick hair. Ideally, I’d like the white streaks to blend in and look like they’re actually part of my hair.

Has anyone tried creating white streaks on dark hair for cosplay? Which method gives the best results, especially for a long night of partying and dancing? I’d also prefer something that won’t transfer too much or get ruined if it rains.

I’m open to any suggestions, especially from people who have experience with cosplay makeup, body painting or temporary hair coloring.

Thank you so much! 💚⚡️

need some help!

Im doing a project where a bug has to pop out of a pimple like wound. The bug is pretty big, about an inch big. Does anyone have suggestions on how to achieve this popping pimple bug effect?

I’ve sculpted some tests with 3rd Degree and I just dont think it looks natural enough. If i make it too thin, it rips when popping. If i make it too thick, the prosthetic is stiff. Also, I’m using Vaseline & lotion as “pus” but they are release agents and tend to burst through the pros-aide I’m using.

I could use any thoughts or tips!!

How to make petroleum jelly + flour scar wax last longer?

I know there's buyable scar wax but it's a little pricey and I need a lot of it.

Some friends and I are dressing up as zombies for a party. I've made scar wax before but it feels really fragile, like a single bump can pull it off.

Any tips to preserve its structure and make it withstand a night of activity? (unrelated to sweating)

Ripping Open Chest Suggestions

Hello.

I have never done sfx makeup before, but wanted to try for a performance I have in December. I wanted to rip open my chest in the middle of the performance, but wanted to know the steps to go about that.

I wanted it to be very similar to this clip from the ending of Suspiria:

I did sculpt this prosthetic a few weeks ago and was finally able to wear everything together to see what it would look like... The hands were a quick project the night before with Latex, cause I thought these were necessary!

I am no professional, I am learning a lot by myself and most things are trial and error with what I do. This is my fourth time sculpting something for a silicone prosthetic 🦇🍷

Urine + feces (Obsession costume)

Hello Redditors :) I’m dreaming of being Nikki from Obsession this Halloween, specifically the scene where Bear comes home from work to find her standing in a puddle of her own vomit, pee, and feces.

I’ve got the vomit figured out, but am a total novice at sfx.

How might you recommend creating something that looks like a stream of pee down my leg that isn’t liquid, and maybe a small log of 💩? I’m going to a party so it needs to be relatively durable. Thanks so much!

First time doing SFX as a scare actorand it didn't end well... need advice NSFW

Hi everyone! This is my first time ever experimenting with SFX, and I'm a scare actor trying to create a bullet hole wound on my forehead. I tried it out tonight, but I ran into a few problems and could really use some advice!

I've heard that DIY scar wax made from Vaseline and flour can work better than store-bought scar wax, so that's what I used. It held up okay at first (picture 1), but because my bullet hole is raised and protrudes outwards, the weight of it makes it slowly slide down my face (the hole starting in the middle of the circle and slowly sliding to the bottom).

Things really started going downhill when I added blood (picture 2). I'm using VIOLA HOUSE Makeup Coagulated Blood. It seems like the blood started melting the scar wax a bit, changing its consistency and texture and ruining the shape of the bullet hole. The added weight inside the whole also made it slide down my face even more. Whenever I tried to push it back into place, it just made things worse, especially since it was ruining the consistency of the wax already.

By the end of the night, the wound looked terrible. It had slid from the centre of my forehead down between my eyebrows, and the shape of the bullet hole was completely messed up (picture 3).You may notice the outer circle is smaller in the last picture compared to the first and that's because I kept scrapping off the edges as the hole kept sliding further down to try and make it look somewhat centered in the circle again. I need this to last at least six hours for a shift, so this obviously isn't going to work as it is.

I used lash glue underneath when I applied it if tht makes any different but I'm wondering if spirit gum would help in any way. I'm also thinking of trying to make the bullet hole less raised tomorrow to see if that helps with the weight.

I'm really not sure what to do about the blood, though. Is the blood I use just not suitable for this, or is there a way to apply it without it breaking down the scar wax? Should I try a different way of making the scar wax? Should I try a different type of blood? Is DIY scar wax actually better than store-bought scar wax, or would I have better luck with a proper SFX product?

Basically, I need any tips, tricks, or advice on how to make a bullet hole wound that stays in place, holds its shape, and lasts at least six hours without melting or sliding down my face! I'd really appreciate any help or wisdom, especially from people who have experience with doing SFX makeup for scare acting shifts!
