Sewed This Made a skirt for our anniversary dinner and he hates it

He literally said „sometimes it’s not worth to spend the time to make it yourself“.

I am so sad. I made it in one evening after work, full 360 skirt, hemmed and everything.
it’s not ironed on the image, since it was late at night when I was done.

edit:

for this subreddit: didn’t have a pattern, since it’s an easy circle skirt, but I did look u a blog post on sartor on how to measure everything. The fabric is something plastic (I immediately burned it, but luckily I had enough, it was a second hand purchase and in its previous life it was a table cloth)

Thank you all for your kind words <3

We talked. And he did self reflect and apologised. Also he will buy me something he deems more appropriate for the event tomorrow and will pay the food, so I guess I’ll take that.

Project: FO Haven’t sewed in a year, so I took a couple of weeks off to garnish my autumn wardrobe

The overshirt (photos 1 & 2, details photos 4 & 5, construction photo 8) is the Arbor, from Merchant and Mills: https://merchantandmills.com/eu/the-arbor with an alteration (I added the lining), it was my 3rd iteration on that pattern (previously, previously), still the same size so I can wear a warm jumper under it. A day and a half to make it. First and perhaps last time I’m making something in tartan, it took me way too many tries to get the pockets alignments right!
The fabric is from Haute Couture leftovers that my local fabric shop buys in Italy, this specific roll was from a recent Prada collection. 100% wool. Lining is cotton satin from the same shop (but not Haute Couture).

The pants (photos 1 & 2, details photo 6, construction photo 9) are the Work Pants from Toshio Kaneko’s Casual Men’s Clothes: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1190812002/casual-mens-clothes-by-toshio-kaneko, it was the second time I made it (previously), instead of a size S I opted for a size M. Almost two days to make it.
I used heavy canvas (440 g/m²) from my local fabric shop. Very heavy. Broke at least two needles, and brought me some grief when sewing the belt with the elastic. Still a bit stiff to move around.

The short sleeved shirt (photos 3, details photo 7) is the All State, from Merchant and Mills: https://merchantandmills.com/en-eu/products/the-all-state, it’s the third time I’m making it, it’s a classic for the summer and half-summer we’re getting right now (half a day, no pattern-matching on this one because it’s a fun shirt for summer).
I found the fabric at my fabric shop, in the leftovers bin. It’s a very nice linen.

The chinos (photo 3) are from Toshio Kaneko’s Men Clothes book: https://www.etsy.com/listing/484080220/pattern-maker-toshio-kanekos-mens, first time making it (one full day). Next time I’ll make it a little larger around the crotch and thighs.
The fabric is from my fabric shop (they love me and my buying impulses), it’s a gabardine I had already worked with.

All in all a productive vacation, but I’m already thinking of the next projects I’ll make.

Project: FO My little bat is ready for Halloween!

Daughter’s school is celebrating Halloween tomorrow before their vacation—made this last minute but really happy with how it turned out!

Self drafted the ears and wings (used Stellaluna 🦇for inspo). Started with an old sweatshirt to work off of since I didn’t have much time (I unpicked the sides and sleeves to attach wings). For the ears I made sort of triangular pieces so they would stand up when worn. Fabric came from the 50¢ box at the thrift store.

Project: FO Corderoy pants complete! Fit questions

Hi all, third project here 😀. I used the In The Folds / Peppermint Wide Leg Pants pattern. My waist is 30” and my hips are 44”, so I initially planned to grade from sizes E to G, then got nervous and graded from F to G and ultimately had to take everything in 🤪. I learned how to do pants for the first time, including a fly and a curved waistband. I also had to troubleshoot after the waistband came out too short and the pants were a tiny bit short as well (now slightly too long, but that is ok with me). Still deciding on back pockets…

I love how they fit for the most part, but am wondering if there is more I should do about the front crotch area whiskers. The last picture of me standing is with me scrunching forward a bit to exaggerate them, but not sure if they are just how pants are or if I need to adjust something else. Suggestions on any part of the pants are welcome!!!

Project: FO An airplane dress for my two year old's birthday

Pattern is Roslyn size 3T from Little Lizard King. The cloud fabric is Dino Dreams from Iris + Sea, and the sleeves are a Fableism remnant. The inner is purple cotton poplin.

This was my first time making the Roslyn Dress. I know people prefer sewing the elastic back over sewing buttonholes, but I found it a lot more difficult! I really struggled with the top stitching and catching the lining correctly to make an enclosed waist seam. I was scrambling to finish it in time, so I left it as-is, but will unpick and redo it later. I might try using hem tape to hold it together, because pinning was a struggle.

I did the applique myself and used one of the special stitches on my Juki machine to do the little sparkles around it. My daughter loves airplanes, so it was fun to make her something she was really excited to wear.

Apologies for how wrinkly it is. I ironed it quickly and then it was immediately covered in cake, as it should be!

Tip Get yourself a variarc for your sewing machine! You will not regret it.

*sorry for the typo in the title 🫠

Hello all!

While sewing aprons yesterday I realized how much this little piece of equipment helps me slow down my machine and make better garments.

This is my variac, there are many like it but this one is mine. She creates a variable alternating current and basically allows me to select between many many different speeds on my sewing machine. For context...my vintage Kenmore works like a champ but even with only my pinky toe touching the pedal...it runs faster than heck!

So I use the variac to solve this problem. I plug my sewing machine into the variac and the variac nto the wall outlet and it gives me multitude of speeds I can smoothly go between for delicate work. **Make sure to read the info on your machine so you do not overpower it, this can blow out your light bulb and your engine. Just do your research, youtube has tons of videos on this kind of equipment. **

Yes, they are kind of expensive brand new, but I see them on FB marketplace and estate sales regularly. They also come up on Ebay often, just make sure the seller packs it VERY WELL (they are pretty heavy for their size) One drop from the post office will kill it.

Hope this tip helps someone like it helped me!

Project: FO Alteration - adding tulle to a dress as a beginner

I posted before (here https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/s/9EB63wAmwK ) looking for suggestions. Long story short, I wanted to wear this dress for a wedding (so no white) and also, the white part was stained.
My options were: dying it, trying to sew something to match the rest of the dress, or something entirely different - like this tulle. Last one was definitely the most voted option.
I ended up doing it by hand (I need to get some more experience with the machine! And the tulle scared me), so it took a while.
I did have a backup dress, but ended up using this one.

I think the dress was way prettier before. I will still try to find a similar white (or other bright colour) at some point. Also, it became kinda “bumpy” at the edge? If I were to do it again now I think I wouldn’t sew the tulle so close to the edge, but manage to sew it higher (maybe attaching it to the lining), so the dress would just “sit” on top of it.

I wanted to thank you all for the suggestions! I have very little experience with sewing fabric, but was very happy to get this done.

Project: FO "Be there, or be square"

I found this cool pattern in a magazine at the library (Knip mode 2024-03, to be exact). It's a dress with a circle skirt, but the skirt is a square instead.

I used two nearly identical thrifted duvet covers to make this dress. They're 100% plain weave cotton, but a bit thin and see-through, so I lined every pattern piece with a copy of itself to create a double layer. This results in a nice weight and thickness for the dress.

I modified the pattern in two places: I added a button placket because I didn't like the original opening at the collar, and I added pockets (mandatory in any dress, of course).

Sewed This Sushi sleep sacks

Both of my other coworkers on my shift are pregnant. I made 3 month old sized sleep sacks based on the goober peas Orion pattern with modifications suggested by my friend with small children. The pattern called for shoulder snaps and sewing the bottom closed. I used velcro in both places instead after being told how important it is to be able to change the diaper without having to extract the baby and that snaps are hard in the dark for sleep deprived parents. The sushi fabric is a minky print and the inside is a cotton blend french terry. Hopefully they'll work well for them.

What happens when you simplify a pattern too much? Plain pants.
This is the third pair of trousers I've made, but this one is technically only "inspired by" the Alice Anna Hickory Pant pattern. I edited her gorgeous front pockets away and added side seam pockets instead. So happy that the waistband casing came out the right size for the elastic on the first try on this pair. I do find myself wanting to fold the waistband over, so next time I should chop 2.5" off the waist/rise.

I also added a large diamond gusset in the groin, because these were intended to be gardening uniform, but they just seem a little too nice to treat them that way yet. The inner seams are all frenched and sewn down but the side seams are serged because I'm still new to french seaming. Frenching the pockets was a little too intimidating.

Excited to have finally have decent 2" no-roll elastic. Every other 2" elastic I have ever bought must have either been low quality or not non-roll from craft stores or Amazon was kinda meh. I got the non-roll elastic in these pants from Wawak and I can't believe the difference. It's actually a little tough to sew but it does NOT FOLD OR ROLL.

Sewed This Sewing Competition

I’m a contestant in a local sewing competition, Project Runway style, and this week is advant garde/unconventional materials. I’ve been terrified of this week’s challenge since before the competition started but I’m really loving what I’m working on! The assignment is to make a costume - this is made entirely out of craft paper, duct tape (for stability), and maiden grass from yard and around my neighborhood. She’s gonna be a hawk!

Pattern Question How to achieve this frilly waistband

Post image
20 Upvotes

I’m trying to make a clown costume and am having trouble figuring out how to make this waistband. Do you think it’s a regular elastic waistband with the frills added on top and a ribbon channel through there?

Or is the waistband folded in 2 to sandwich the pants with a longer side being the frills? (And the elastic and ribbon are in the same piece)

Thank you!

It's finally cooling off and my 9 month old is crawling a lot (and getting ready to stand 🫪), so time to break out the knit scraps! I used the Petite Peg Legs from Patterns for Pirates in the 6 months size. I didn't bother hemming them 🤷🏽‍♀️

I have always been obsessed with this yellow jacket/sweater Wendy Torrance wears in The Shining. I feel like I could recreate the embroidery relatively easily, but I'm unsure what the material is as well as what kind of pattern I should look for to base the jacket off of. Any ideas in either?

I’m making a wall hanging for my living room. The first picture is mine and the second is the inspiration. The inspo is quilted with straight lines and I like the way that looks but I’m unsure if I should quilt mine, and if I do what color should I do? I don’t think white thread would look good. I’m torn between a dark brown or a cream, but I’m just so unsure. I’ve never quilted anything before!!

I am trying to put eyelets (?) in this garment that I am making, but I have no idea how to use it. I have only seen people putting eyelets in with a bigger tool, but I bought this because it was the cheapest. I don’t even know what it is called so I cant find any tutorials on it.
I know that I am supposed to use a hammer I think, but thats about it.

Thanks in advance

Edit: I figured it out, its just a little ugly, but practice makes perfect ig
Thank you all for the help :)

Fabric Question Traitors themed blanket cape

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi y'all.

New to sewing, and planning to make a few of these capes as Halloween or Christmas presents for my friends. I'd love to make them as a blanket cape, so they'd get more use.

What fabric would you recommend? I'm tossing up between just using a thick fleece, or having a fleece lining and something else on the outside.

We're all autistic AF, so no velvet or similar please.

Sewed This Cotton Fabric Interface Advice

I am 90% done with making this fish bag with pink lining. The blue and yellow fabric are completely lined with iron on interfacing. When I flipped the bag right side up it looks super wrinkled. I have tried ironing but the lining has made it hard to look nice. Is it ok to hit it with my steamer or the steam setting of my iron? I have a cheap steamer that only has one setting and am worried the steamer will mess with the interfacing. Please tell me I don’t have to take it all apart! Any help is appreciated!

Other Question Advice for Improving the appearance of my bag

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Hello! I made this bag from scratch, including the design and pattern. It's the first bag I've made. However, I had to rush finishing it because of a move. As a result, there's areas that are really rough. But I like the design of the bag, and I'd like to be able to wear this bag daily and be happy with my work. Does anyone have advice for making it look more polished?

I Included a concept photo, though I opted for extra studs instead of a buckle as I was working on it.

Btw, it's an Ita bag, which means the front has a pocket with a clear section so you can insert pins, buttons, etc, and keep them protected.

Materials include clear PVC, black denim from old jeans, black pleather, cotton lining, and extra heavy fusable interfacing.

Here's the main issues I've noticed:

  • The messy stitching on the front cross.
  • The studs have some gapping between the teeth and the pleather, especially at any bends.
  • The glue showing around the back zipper
  • The ugly joint in the strap between the star end cap and the rest of the strap

Btw, for the back zipper the denim was not staying in place no matter how I ironed it, so I tried to glue the folded part down before sewing the zipper, but it ended up looking really bad with some of the glue showing.

I also tried to glue the ends of the cross down since I had to hand see them since they went around corners and whatnot, but some of the glue ended up showing.

I'm open to any alteration ideas you have! Whether it's removing glue, adding things, or sewing over parts, or whatever else you think of :)

EDIT - My drafting progress was that I drew up what I wanted the bag to look like, then made a paper mockup. Messenger bags are pretty simple construction wise since it's just a rectangle with a flap, so I just figured out what size rectangle I wanted, then the connecting strips based on desired depth. Plus, add a little extra to the top so I have something to sew the lining onto. The exterior pockets are just more rectangles stitched together. And the straps are just more rectangles, but this time turned inside out.

Alter/Mend Question Excess fabric - sway back

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey,

how can I fix this excess fabric at the back?

Bought this dress, however it was way too wide, so I reduced the gathers at the waist seam and took in the sides. Now I like how it looks from the front, but there's this excess fabric billowing out at the back.

What will help - add back gathers? Reduce gathers further? Let out the sides a bit? Or lift the lower part at the waist seam?

Any advice is much appreciated!
