Wednesday Exceptions Dusk for Plex 1.6: SharePlay, better Apple TV playback, and more
Hey all, Dusk 1.6 is out! Last time I posted was around the Apple TV launch, so below the new stuff there's a quick catch-up of everything else that shipped since.
New in 1.6
- SharePlay: watch together over FaceTime
- Apple TV now matches frame rate and dynamic range to the content, and multichannel audio is fixed
- Subtitles: font size setting and OpenSubtitles download via Plex
Also new in the last couple of months
- Live TV: Plex Live TV with a full guide
- AirPlay: send video to an AirPlay receiver while Dusk stays the remote
- Plex Home: user switching with PIN
- Seerr integration: request stuff right from search
- AI upscaling for low-res content, on all devices
- Generic video libraries (home videos / clips) are now supported
Plus a lot of playback and audio fixes along the way.
Thank you ❤️
At least half of this list started as a comment or DM from one of you.
Dusk is free and open source, with no ads and every feature available to everyone. The only thing that pays for it is people choosing to support it through the app. So a special thanks to everyone who does, Dusk wouldn't be possible without you.
Please keep it coming. If something is broken or feels off, tell me here or on GitHub. I read all of it.

Looks good! I see Jellyfin support is “later down the line”. Any concrete plans yet?

My goal was to really perfect the Plex Experience before starting Jellyfin. That being said, I think I'm really close. I'm planning to release version 1.7 within the next two weeks which will be a big step especially for Apple TV. After that I think the biggest points are covered and I'll tackle version 2.0 which will be Jellyfin :)
Edit: So to give a timeline, within the next 2 Months (roughly).

As a Plex lifetime pass person, one of my biggest gripes when I use Jellyfin is how different the UI/experience is from Plex.
As of right now I use Wholphin, and while it gets prob 70% there, it's still lacking that level of refinement that makes me go "ah thats it, perfect, feels basically identical"
If you can achieve that across both platforms, you'll strike gold.

Yea, I feel you 100%. The client has always been holding me back on Plex but now the goal is to change that :)

Looks like Apple TV has allot of alternative Plex clients. Would love to see some more diversity for the Android TV/Google TV ecosystem.
PS. I know there is Plezy and Vidhub.

I love Plezy but I feel it's missing that "sauce" to really make it feel like it's own thing and level up that UX/UI. The closest I've gotten to that experience is with fladder on desktop.
It's such a joy to navigate and just very intuitive how everything works. This including the simple ability to minimize a show/movie without being forced to close it while you navigate.
But unfortunately the player itself isn't as stable and doesn't even offer the ability to configure mpv.

Yea absolutely! I'll focus my energy on the Apple Ecosystem but would be awesome to see more options in the space.

I certainly think so, yea 😜 But I've received really positive feedback so far. Would be great to hear what you think if you try it :)

Will there be a way to integrate external players like r/nativeplayer?
That would support TrueHD Atmos support and Dolby vision profile7

u/marvinvr_ch 2h ago
Right now we don't integrate external players, no. DV5 is in App Store Review right now. DV7+ will come in the next update :)

App looks great and I love that it’s open source. Some quick comments: It really needs a filter for unwatched when browsing libraries. On my iPhone 17 pro the home tab doesn’t size correctly for the screen so things aren’t visible or accessible on the right.

No that shouldn't be. can you DM me a screenshot and I will fix it in the next version.

Does it support E‑AC3 Atmos?

The new Version that's in App Store Review right now and it will support that. :)

I downloaded it on my Apple TV but when I hit the back button to get out of a setting or movie search it closes the app instead of going back one step.
So then I get locked where I have to force close the app.

I had the same issue. Once you search go to the search results and hit menu. It will go back without exiting.

Yea that was bad. The new version is in App Store Review right now and will fix that. Will be out in 1-2 days I presume.

Looks great! I'd love to switch over from Infuse on Apple TV, but from what I can see on the github page dolby vision and HLG playback still lag behind Infuse. Is that something you plan on improving? It's the one thing keeping me stuck on Infuse...no other player seems to handle all the various DV and HLG formats as well quite yet.

Dolby Vision Profile 5 support is included in the version in the release process right now, so will be out in a few days. The next update will Include HLG, Profile 7+ :) I'll post here for sure when it's out.

This looks very similar to plezy? Is this fork
1
u/marvinvr_ch 2h ago
No, it's not a Fork, It's a native app for Apple devices. As far as I know, Plezy is using some Cross-Platform technology.

u/MrRobot-403 2h ago
Ah yes I just saw. I am using plezy it’s more mature right now. Would be crazy to combine two apps in to one to rival infuse 😃
One can hope
App looks good, not yet fully polished but I don’t blame you. Fellow developer I know the struggle. SharePlay is something that’s niche for your app only so thank you!

I read this description and the website. Still no ducking idea what this is.
Perhaps next time, use your words.

There are so many words in the post that describe exactly what this is about, it’s hilarious that you had to scroll past all of the words to type up, read through, verify, and post this comment. It’s so painfully obvious what this app is trying to do
Perhaps next time, use your eyes and that pea-sized brain to figure out what the words mean
