Would guess those are UV reactive ducks. Which have had sunscreen applied.

Hoping they “react” by turning red, because it makes the duck with red armpits funnier. To me.

That is what they are. I think the idea is you put sunscreen on the duck when you put sunscreen on yourself, and when the duck starts changing color it's time to reapply your sunscreen.

Huh. Mining canary. But sunny days and ducks. That’s actually kinda cool.

The duck days of summer.

That's brilliant

No, that's not what they are. They're just a toy/trinket :)

If you put sunscreen on it, it wouldn't be a good indicator because time is not the deciding factor for sunscreen's efficacy. I believe that in this case, the sunscreen is actually absorbed a little bit into the plastic material, rendering the UV reaction obsolete.

I live/grew up in a beach town. People wear UV reactive jewelry to monitor their sun exposure. These people also wear sunscreen. If you get sunscreen on your UV reactive jewelry when you apply it, it doesn’t work anymore because it blocks the UV rays and prevents it from changing color.

cool. thanks!

so people would wear the jewelry when they don't wear sunscreen, to be earned if they need it?

is the jewelry reusable I assume?

I kind of love the dead duck design and want one haha

the sunscreen can't come off the jewelry?

People on the beach can have both sunscreen and a UV monitor. During the summer, the beach is so close I might go 2 or 3 times a week so it’s important that I don’t get sunburnt all the time because it’s terrible for you. These monitors let you know when it’s time to go home.

If you’re on the beach, your sunscreen is almost certainly waterproof so it’s harder to wash off the UV charm.

Live by the beach and we wear sunscreen, but it wears off throughout the day. The UV monitor helps when it's time to reapply.

You start off wearing sunscreen, with the jewelry, and when the jewelry reacts you REAPPLY the sunscreen. You don't start off without protection.

People just ignoring the question about the jewelry. It can come off. But it doesn't wear off like it does on skin due to sweat, skin oils, and dead skin cells shedding off, stretching and contracting of skin. Compare to something like car wax maybe, harder to get off your car than your hands.

I actually helped reply to this original post. OP had these little ducks which change color when exposed to UV rays that they would cover in sunscreen to test which one would help them. They were very pale or maybe they got hives in the sun?I don’t remember that part. They just wanted to test sunscreen without getting burned and this way worked for a long time. One of the sunscreens they bought worked too well though and made the duck useless. All the other sunscreens washed off or wiped off, but the one they used this time fused with the plastic or something and would come off.

I was there... I was there that fateful day to witness...

TlDR : OP wanted to test sunscreen on some UV sensative ducks they had (apparently normal for sun sensative peoples), it worked too well and they wanted to keep the ducks but the sunscreen soaked into the plastic and wasn't able to be removed.

That reminds me... did that guy ever figure out how to get that cylinder unstuck?

1

u/Drewnessthegreat Dec 25 '25

I watched a YouTube video experimenting on ways to resolve that problem recently.

They used a fragile cylinder attached to a larger structure which must not be damaged

OH MY GOD I HAVE A COUPLE OF THESE THINGS!!!

They inexplicably were included free with some glowing jewelry I bought for myself and my wife and kiddo.

I had no idea you could make them not reactive with sunscreen. That knowledge has… potential. 😏

Try dawn dish soap

Well first off I think those ducks wont need sunscreen anymore, second why did you apply it
