Calling Crafters, Builders & Creators!

Hey Santa Rosa gang!

I've had a lot of ideas over the years, and I've REALLY wanted to share them. Some good, some bad. Plenty I've built, plenty I've forgotten, and a few I got talked out of.

Years ago I ran a meetup here around Raspberry Pi and automated systems and was able to meet some really interesting people from different walks of life with all types of ideas and expertise! I want to do that again, but way more open ended. These days I'm "dipping nuggets you've never heard of into sauces you could never fathom." My interests have spread far past pure tech: bees, woodworking, music, gardens, weird data art, voice acting, sustainability, magic and whimsy.

So I'm looking for artists, builders, bakers, developers, improvisers, philosophers, psychologists, tinkerers, eccentrics, designers, writers, chemists, etc. Anyone curious who likes making things and talking to people unlike themselves.

I’d love to get people together and see if there is something we can build together, or a problem we can solve eventually. Or at the very least, have a safe place to share our interesting projects and special variety of knowledge. But the end goal is to accomplish something either with the help of, the the inspiration of this group!

The idea is to connect people and find a community around projects, and I envision this as getting in on the ground floor. I have all types of plans depending on where the group takes us.

I built a little website as part personal project resume, part call to action. Scroll through, see what I'm about, and if "it" clicks or something caught your attention, drop your name and info in the contact form. First hang will be casual for vibes sake.

Let me know either on here, or at the end of the site you can send me a message that goes pretty direct. I'd love to gauge the interest from the community here!

Kaiser Health Plan 2027 Premium Increase

Just received renewal information from Kaiser. For reference I am turning 27 in November and my plan is the Minimum Coverage HMO. My company does not pay for any benefits at all so I pay out of pocket for everything.

2026 monthly premium - $294.04

2027 monthly premium - $378.40

A 28.7% INCREASE

I'm currently in the process of interviewing for a county job in Marin for the benefits even though they have similar pay. The benefits alone outweigh the costs.

Has anyone else received a rate increase like this? This seems insane.

Anybody down for some disc golf?

Hey! I've just started disc golfing (I'm terrible at it!) and it seems like a fun group activity. Let's make some friends!

Anyone want to meet at 11am at Crane Creek Regional Park at 10am for a round? I have an extra frisbee, but you need one they're available at Sports Basement for $10-$15. There is a parking fee ($6?), which is covered by the Sonoma County parks pass permit if you have it.

Me: 34m, backpacker and improv-comedy lover, working in the legal field, bass-player, occasionally active in progressive politics.

DM or reply!

Looking for land to rent for my 20 ft camping trailer

I will be starting a new job in Santa Rosa next week and will be commuting over an hour from the east bay. I have a 20 foot camping trailer that I’d like to park in or around Santa Rosa to occasionally spend the night there so that I don’t have to commute quite as much in the evening and morning. The ideal location would also have a yard for my dog during the days she’s with me. Let me know if you or someone you know has a place to rent, thanks!

Fair price to paint a house? For a roof?

About 1350 square feet, plus a 2-car garage. No fancy details or complex shapes - basically an 'L' with two pitched roofs that meet one another, and it needs some trim replaced and some stucco repaired or patched. What should I expect to get ready to pay?

We're also going to need a roof in a few years and if I can, I'll do that now. Any guesses?

Friday we are hosting an event for TK-2nd graders and expected some superhero cosplayers to be there. Unfortunately the group we had worked with in the past are not able to make it.
Any cosplayers interested in a morning with a bunch of little kids that would love to give high fives while running laps? Friday 9ish-noonish in Windsor

Set of Golf Clubs Found

A set of golf clubs was found in Southwest Santa Rosa today. Most likely stolen as they were found stashed in our street-side trees for a later retrieval.

PM me with specific details and/or proof of ownership to be reunited with your clubs!

Do you like French culture and games? There's a Pétanque event at Matanzas Creek Winery this Saturday. Food and community. It's $10 if you're not a member of the Alliance Française.

For me voting No on L is voting No on Flock Cameras.

Why would I want to vote Yes on Measure L when Santa Rosa sales tax is already one of the highest in the state?

Santa Rosa City Council wants us to vote on increasing our sales tax. This would keep an existing sales tax and add an additional 0.50%. It's hard enough living in this city and now they want us to pay more because of the council’s inability to budget properly and their spending excessive amounts of money on Flock Cameras.

What reason is there to vote to increase sales tax?

We've all felt that our votes don't matter, but this election we have the opportunity to elect a majority progressive Board of Supervisors for the first time in 50 years. Melanie Bagby and Joanna Paun are the candidates committed to ending all ICE collaboration.

Hosting an underground stand-up comedy showcase inside Deerfield’s wine cave next Saturday (Oct 24) — set up a discount for local Redditors

Hey everyone!

If anyone is looking for a unique date night or something fun to do next weekend, we’re putting on an intimate live stand-up comedy showcase inside the underground wine cave at Deerfield Ranch Winery in Kenwood on Saturday, October 24th.

The show takes place 50 feet underground surrounded by aging oak barrels in their 23,000 sq. ft. cave.

5:30 PM: Doors open, Deerfield wine bar pouring, and food available outside on the patio.

7:00 PM: Showtime inside the cave (featuring touring Bay Area club regular Alvin Duke Reid along with a solid supporting lineup).

Seating inside the cave is strictly limited to keep the room dynamic intimate. Tickets are normally $25, but I set up a 15% discount for the sub using code CAVE15 (capped at 10 uses).

Dropping the link and ticket details in the comments below for anyone interested! Happy to answer any questions about the venue or setup.

Flock Forum on Mon, October 19 - Location Change & Final Updates

Hi Sonoma County,

I'm Cecilia Sofranko, the Vice Chair of the Commission on Human Rights. We've seen the amount of interest around Flock in the county, and we wanted to create a forum for community conversation. We formed an ad hoc with the goal to make a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors and possibly local City Councils after we listen to the public's concerns at our event.

We have a panel of local law enforcement officials as well as city council and Supervisor Lynda Hopkins, and the director of research from Oakland Privacy. The program will begin with pre-submitted questions with the hopes of getting some of the big/common questions out of the way, and then it'll open up for public comment.

We have just changed locations for additional capacity, and will be offering a live stream on Zoom as well. Spanish interpretation provided.

RSVPing is strongly encouraged. You can do so here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/alpr-flock-community-forum-sonoma-county-commission-on-human-rights-tickets-2002759649023

You can submit questions ahead of time here: https://forms.gle/VxFqk3MtwCFPrVp17

We hope to see you there!

Experiences & opinions of SR middle schools & high schools for 7th graders

I have a 6th grader who has been at the same elementary school his entire school experience thus far. He’s had some minor instances with bullying due to his ADHD & mild ASD but it was always handled by teachers for the most part. He’s a little socially different but otherwise fits in in class and is capable of making friends. But bullying has happened and is on my mind in this post.

My concern is that next year is middle school, and the options are basically entering a raffle to enroll him at Spring Lake Middle School for 7th and 8th, or sending him at 12 years old to a high school campus to attend “middle school.” From some parents, I’ve heard bullying is actually pretty bad at Spring Lake Middle. From others, I’ve heard anxiety that young kids are among 18 year olds, and bullying could be worse on high school campuses. And yet others have said their kids have done well at the high school and at least they wouldn’t have to adapt to a new school after two years.

I’d like to hear anything from parents of middle schoolers who have experience at either the middle school or the high schools, or high schoolers on here who see middle schoolers at their school and how they’re treated being so young. What have you heard about bullying at the middle school or high schools? Talk to me, this is all new to me, I attended middle & high school in L.A. so I don’t have personal experience at any of the schools in Santa Rosa.
