Start with what is available to you, 1997s anime is best though.

Read the manga to get the full story and then watch all the adaptations in whatever order you want. They all have strengths and weaknesses.

Start with 1990s anime, watch until the legend of Kyoto arc. And read manga for the rest of the story (skip the episodes after Kyoto arc, those are fillers).

2023 might be good choice as well. Then 1997 But whatever you do.

Watch first OVA ( 2000 ) as a last part . It is peak absolute cinema on that.

No offense but anyone that voted anything but the manga is lying to you, not when none of the versions of the anime are completed and the live action changed a bunch of things and dont give much development to the secondary characters.

Even tho i started with the 90s ver when i as a child nowadays as an adult, i think if you have the option the best version is always the original source. After that is up to you to decided what ver of the adaptations you wanna consume as the 1st since all of them have flaws. i still recommend it to watch it all if you like the story but dont let the nostalgic fans trick you that the 90s ver is better than the manga (especially since you will have to tune in the manga to read the final arc).

1996 anime preferably English dub (mediablasters). Then Trust and Betrayal OVA. (subbed)

90s anime is the best introduction

Sure after the Kyoto arc the plot weakens a bit,but by that point a person is already interested in the story and can easily migrate towards the Manga and get the full story

Just read the manga. The 90s anime has lots of filler and the first arc is almost completely different to the original manga.

The live action is very different since they have to squeeze a lot of content into a small time.

And the remake has the first arc manga accurate but the 2nd arc is slightly different but at least should adapt the whole manga unlike the 90s one.

So yeah overall the manga is my recommendation.
