Recommendation request Looking for RPGs to play. Preferably mordern ones.

Some RPGs I have tried

Mass Effect trilogy - Absolutely loved everything except how bad the ending was for 3. And the gameplay for first two games were not that good.

Oblivion - Really Enjoyed it. But that leveling system was soo ass and combat was pretty meh.

Skyrim - Couldn't get into it. The combat was not that great. And Skyrim's more Nordic inspired setting didn't do it for me.

Witcher 3 - Couldn't get into it. The story felt like really relied on me caring about Yennefer and Ciri. But at the same time. I don't know who they are. That's not really the games fault. It's Witcher 3 after all. Based on Books as well. And I really don't feel like reading whole series of books and two whole games to finally be emotionally be invested in the games story. And the combat got old pretty quick. Really interesting world tho.

Dragon Age Origins - Couldn't get into it. Don't even know why I couldn't get into it cuz on paper everything about the game felt something I would want from a game.

Kotor 1&2 - Absolutely loved them. The gameplay was pretty straightforward but it still felt fun. It feels good to make an entire room full of enemies float in air and the story was really good. And really enjoyed the role playing aspect of them.

Fallout New Vegas - Enjoyed it but couldn't finish it. Currently putting it on hold

Fallout 1 - Too old for me.

Baldurs Gate - Too old for me.

Baldurs Gate 3 - Enjoyed it a lot. But eventually lost interest and couldn't finish it.

Divinity Original Sins 2 - By Far the best RPG game I have played. Loved everything about it.

Kingdom Come Deliverence - Enjoyed the combat but the overall game felt bit tedious and janky.

Alpha Protocol - Really enjoyed the Role playing elements of the game. But the actual gameplay felt soo janky and buggy. But overall enjoyed it.

Deus Ex Jensen Duology - Really enjoyed them.

Cyberpunk 2077 - Only RPG game I played and hated it. Dialogue made me cringe every second. And any weapon that isn't your fist feels terrible to use.

Tyranny - Currently playing it. Enjoying it so far.

Outer worlds - This one I haven't played. But I often hear people talk about it as suggestion for RPGs. The overall premise for the story didn't entice me

Appreciate any recommendations.

I don't have any consoles. So games available for PC would be very helpful.

Discussion Did memorable and unique dungeons live and die with Ultima and Might and Magic?

I was playing Oblivion this morning and I started to wonder if there were any truly memorable, unique, or exciting dungeons in the game and I couldn't think of any. I started to realize that I really couldn't think of in any of the Elder Scrolls games.

Fallout has a few pretty creative vaults and areas. I can't think of any in the Witcher series or Dragon Age, or even Baldur's Gate.

When I really think of the most memorable dungeons I tend to think of the Legend of Zelda. The dungeons are very interconnected with themselves, lots of puzzles, and the themes tend to be tight, building off themselves to tell a story.

What are some dungeons and games that you think back on fondly or go back to play? (Not just missions please, otherwise I'd put the mansion in Vampire Bloodlines in every time :D )

Here is a clip of one of their trailers. Check it out and let me know what you think of it.

Looks quite interesting and promising for me. Would you give it a try or not?

Recommendation request What to do after finishing KCD2

After 3 intense months, I’ve just finished KCD and KCD2.

Like many others, I was completely blown away—it’s on par with other great games in the genre. What should I play next that offers a similar level of narrative quality and the same joy of getting lost in a game world?

To give you an idea, over the last year and a half, I’ve completed Expedition 33, played through The Witcher 3 for the fifth time, and Baldur’s Gate 3 for the second. So, I’ve really been on a roll with absolute masterclasses.

Is Blood of the Dawnwalker just as good within its genre ? I’m particularly intrigued by it

Thanks!

Discussion I think RPG codices have become a place to hide parts of the story

• Upvotes

I like the idea of codices more than I usually like actually reading them.

A game will drop six new entries after one conversation, and apparently one of them explains the war everyone keeps talking about. Technically, the information is there. But if I have to leave the story and read an encyclopedia just to understand what’s happening, it feels like the writers moved part of the plot into a menu. Mass effect is the obvious counterexample. Its codex had its own atmosphere, and the narrated entries were easy to get sucked into. But most games aren’t mass effect, and unlocking a wall of lore doesn’t automatically make the world feel deeper. Codices work best for the stuff that would sound ridiculous in normal dialogue: rumors, field notes, biased history, little details about how people actually live. They should make the world more interesting, not explain why the current quest matters.

Was there an RPG where you actually looked forward to new codex entries? I can think of plenty that trained me to ignore the notification.

Developer The Lich Wars - Story-Rich Gothic RPG - Just Announced

Hello fellow RPG fans!

I'm the lead developer of The Lich Wars - a story-driven RPG where you live the life of a musket soldier over a period of 30 years, across two wars of the undead and a turbulent peacetime. The Lich Wars is the prequel to the CRPG The Necromancer's Tale which we released in 2025.

We have just opened the game's Steam Page:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2245710/The_Lich_Wars/

The Lich Wars unfolds through branching interactive fiction, with RPG skills and skillchecks, and a unique narrative-driven combat system. It will have 300,000 words (estimated) of hand-written narrative from our team of writers (the same team that wrote The Necromancer's Tale), with lots of side-content as well as three main career paths. We're augmenting this with maps and 3D 'tabletop' scenes as well as hundreds of hand-drawn illustrations and character portraits.

Expected release date: late 2028.

For more details please see the Steam page, and of course I'd be very happy to discuss the game here too.

Discussion Which RPG has the best Necromancer class?

Post image
567 Upvotes

Go for it ! lots of strong contenders out there. Which has the best overall in your opinion? think about skills, Depth, & the overall believability of being a Necromancer. Also just going to throw in here that I think an Open World Warhammer fantasy RPG would make Skyrim old news.

Any word on Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains?

I'm starving for turn base games, so I just found this one.

Seems it had a rough localization and the battle rate was crazy.

Still worths the he chance?

Looking for people that actually played it.

Tks.

Developer Sin corrupts your heroes in Myths from the Maw, my dark fantasy tactical RPG

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Yesterday I unveiled the Steam page and reveal trailer for Myths from the Maw, a dark fantasy tactical RPG where sin corrupts your heroes. Delve into an otherworldly abyss to battle rival warbands, eldritch horrors, and corruption itself.

  • Battle rival warbands in brutally tactical, turn-based skirmishes.
  • Sacrifice blood to alien gods for power that corrupts your soul.
  • Resist sin or greedy mercenaries will steal and prideful ones disobey.
  • Lose men to betrayal as sinners defect to the Cult of the Maw.

The corruption system is inspired by Darkest Dungeon’s stress system, but built around player choice, so it’s more about making tough decisions that have consequences. The combat plays like strategy RPGs Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre, but with emphasis on chess-like move and attack patterns, and a Battle Clock that mimics real-time while staying turn-based.

The story draws from Dante’s Inferno and is meant to be an examination of sin and corruption from a non-religious perspective. The worldbuilding is influenced by barbaric sword-and-sorcery realms, like those of Dark Sun and Conan the Barbarian. And of course Lovecraftian horror, where eldritch terrors represent sin made manifest, for a creepier and more perilous Maw.

As a dev, I just like to make games that mash up what I like about other games, worlds, and stories. Hopefully, I’ve tempted you to join my warband, and descend with me into the Maw.

The game will release on Steam (Win, Mac, Lin) and Steam Deck in 2028.
