I used to love rink skating as a kid but never had my own skates. My kid recently expressed interest and so we started going again almost weekly (shout out to Oaks Park in Portland). Finally bit the bullet and got my own skates and I hadn't realized how much easier skating becomes when you have good equipment.

Beginner skater I don’t know what I’m doing

• Upvotes

So I’ve been practicing in my kitchen for months now cause I’m too afraid to go outside. I bought the gear and then I finally went outside today. I just went on my driveway. I didn’t go far and every time I try to do what I was doing in my kitchen. I was having issues and somehow I kept rolling back even though my balance was centered, obviously I fell, but that’s normal with skating, but I don’t know what I’m doing wrong and I tried to do bubbles today, but somehow my skates weren’t letting me turn when my trucks are very loose
I just feel like I learned better if I went to a lesson or something with a big group, but I live in a small town and nobody really skates around here
I really wanna get into skating in all of that but it’s so hard cause I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m really lost even though I’ve been watching YouTube tutorials. I follow a lot of skaters on TikTok. I don’t know what I’m doing still.
I wish there was a coach or a lesson plan that I can follow through somebody because I have a lot of questions
I can always see those TikTok groups that follow each other or they’re learning together and I wish I was a part of that because I feel like I’ve learned better than by myself with a bunch of videos so I took off my skates. I’m just staying calm and I’ll reflect on it tomorrow, but I don’t know what I’m doing and I wish I did.

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades attachable wheels for regular shoes?

hey all! i just wanted to start off by saying im extremely new to skating. i tried as a kid but my mom sold my skates because i wasn't learning fast enough, so as an adult im trying to do things ive always wanted to do.

i know there are detachable skates called slades but they're very expensive and i was wondering if there was a better alternative? i dont have a lot of money but i need something to get me to work as my bike was stolen.

another question, is it possible to modify my own shoes to work with these things? i have very special shoes that help my feet not hurt as much since i have a minor disability.

Skate park 2.5ā€ trucks or 3ā€ ??

Calling all aggressive quad skaters: do you prefer 2.5 inch trucks or 3 inches?

I’ve gotten really comfortable with the 2.5s with coping/transition. I really want to start ledges but when I put my Skate up to the ledge, I just don’t understand how to lock in at all, it seems impossible and so small.
For the people that are into ledges, do you feel that the 3s make it much easier or not a huge difference? Basically, am I being a wuss and trying to make excuses or should I upgrade to the 3 inches before attempting ledges?

Thx in advance <3

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Plate help (small feet)

May crosspost this to the roller derby community as well!

I have been sat looking at the hardware at the WFTDA champs in Malmo today and finally accepted that my plates are way too big.

I skate on a gen 1 Quadstar boot in Bont size 2.5 (217mm foot length) and I have size 3 Arius Platinums mounted to them. They have an overhang at the back of about 3mm and make my toestop work really tiptoey and uncomfortable.

Previously I had Mota plates in a 5" length, but I cannot find any derby brands that go down that small apart from Bont - I have heard not so good things about the trucks and general manufacture of their plates. Are there any Roll Line plates that will go that small that don't way a tonne? I really like the Arius, they are just the wrong size for my feet. Any help would be appreciated šŸ™

If someone can please comment a photo of their size 4 Boardwalk insoles with a ruler over them, I will give you a smooch on the mouth. Size 5 is permitted but not as heavily desired, so that will only be a hug. Thanks.

Shopping: safety gear (helmets, pads, etc.) What Protective Gear is Easy to Get In and Out of?

I want to get into skating and I want to wear all of the gear. You know, helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. The main thing I'm looking for is the ease of use. I want to be able to take them off and on really quickly. Also it would be a plus if they were relatively portable. Any suggestions?

Progress & showing off Working on my bowl jump-outs šŸ˜‚

It’s so hard to think about everything at once: keeping your core engaged, using your arms, pushing through your heels and definitely not your toes, keeping your eyes looking straight ahead, not looking at the obstacle or your feet, bringing your feet together but keeping them apart in the bowl. Pushing through your legs to control the landing šŸ˜‚ There’s so much to think about! I feel like it’s never going to become second nature! And that’s without even mentioning the emotions you feel when you realize you’re getting more air than on your previous attempts! Anyway, I absolutely love this sport.

Other Floor recommendations

Replacing the carpet in my family room and will be using the space to practice skating. Nothing super aggressive, but want to ensure it is durable and can withstand the forces from skate wheels. I do not want more real wood, I hate the upkeep- need to be able to mop it.

What I've gathered so far is it needs to be glue down with a thick wear layer and minimal bevel. Most residential options are floating and beveled or too thin.

Willing to consider different options and would love to hear how others' floors hold up to real life skate use? Please share!!

Beginner skater Outdoor Rollerskating Houston

Hi fellow Houstonians!! Can you please share your favorite places to roller skate for free outdoors? I used to love going to Bear Branch park in the woodlands, they had a multipurpose court that was so smooth and shaded but it’s too far from me now. I am okay exploring different terrain but want as many suggestions as possible! Safe places with little to no traffic. Thank you!

Skill questions & help Need help with coping stalls

as title says, I’m looking to add stalls to my repertoire so that I can work towards carving up a quarter pipe and frontsiding the coping. But for the life of me I cannot get both my feet up at the same time. I always drag my back foot as a safety precaution I guess. afraid to fall backwards down the quarter. I’ve watched damn near every tutorial I can find. Has anyone else dealt with this and have any advice for overcoming it?

Skate problems & troubleshooting Plate questions

Ugh please help

I bought some moxi jack 1s custom lightly used. They were sold to me on poshmark and in the listing it said they had avanti aluminum plates. However they actually have reactor neo plates.

I was able to purchase wider trucks (huck trucks) and install them on my skates, but i am nervous about the pivot cups. The tiny white derlin ones. They are soooo small and everything i see online is that they are just not meant for park skating, which is what i do. The trucks fit fine i think? I didnt have to shove them or anything they just sit in there.

They dont make rubber pivot cups for the neo reactor plates. Idk what to do because i do not have the money to buy new plates after already buying new trucks and then id have to replace the slide blocks as well when i already spent a ton on them.

Beginner skater Horrible Skate Today... But I Did It.

I got my skates about a month ago. My partner has been teaching me since they've skated in derby since they were a kid. They've been holding my hand, stopping me, staying right next to me the whole time, etc every other time we've skated together. I felt loved and cared for. I cannot even stop on my own. I decided to be brave today and we went to a local skating group on a crowded Greenway with pedestrians, dogs, traffic, crosswalks, and more. I am not at all qualified for this kind of skate, but my partner told me they'd help me.

For some reason, my partner did not treat me with the same tenderness and attentiveness that they have before. They barely talked to me, skated way ahead of me, told me to keep going when I said I was terrified and my legs were shaking, etc. I was skating on sidewalks for the first time in my life. I had to go over the bumpy sidewalk-end indicators. I had to go over train tracks. Strangers in the group were checking on me, but my partner wasn't. It was absolutely terrifying and I ended up stopping and sobbing out of complete fear and overwhelm.

I ended up leaving them because they weren't helping anyways and skating all the way back, about 1 mile in the dark, completely by myself. It was fucking awful and terrifying and I almost fell several times and almost got hit by a car once. But I did it, and I did it by myself. I don't think I'll be skating with them again anytime soon, but at least I know I'm tough and I don't need them.

I never would have gone if they hadn't promised me to support me and help me through. But knowing for sure that I don't need them feels so freeing. So I just wanted to celebrate my win for today. That I can skate completely alone at night and make it back to my car. I don't need anyone. I can do it. I'll be crying and terrified, but I can still do it alone.

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Thrift store vintage skates pickup

I was at a thrift store in the middle of nowhere upstate New York (literally, the town had no cell phone reception), and I saw these. By some miracle they fit me perfectly, I bought them immediately for $50.

The boots are black leather, they have "Chicago Roller Skate Co. Ware Bros. Pat.2719723" etched into the plates, and the wheels are made of wood.

According to a quick Google search, the patent was filed in October 1955.

Shopping: safety gear (helmets, pads, etc.) EU based shops

Hi hi , I need to get some better fitting gear and I wanted to ask for store recommendations? Shipping to Iceland is a nightmare to begin with so I want Europe based stores ?
I need xs protection gear and so far I have only found it in sucker punch shop but it doesn’t hurt to have options 😊
