We got PS5 games playing through Moonlight, with the host running on the PS5
Imagine opening Moonlight, selecting your PS5, and seeing the game youâre already playing appear on another screenâwith sound and controller input. Thatâs what weâre building with PS5Stream: an experimental, Sunshine-style host that runs on the PS5 itself.
This is more than a tile that appears in Moonlight. In a watched test, we played FC 27 through stock Moonlight on an Nvidia Shield Pro for three minutes. The gameplay kept moving, game sound stayed live, an Xbox controller connected to the Shield controlled the game, and local DualSense control returned afterward. Weâve also had a five-minute Crash Bandicoot 4 session with moving picture and sound throughout.
The part I find most exciting is the setup: the PS5 is the streaming host. A PC is currently used for some temporary setup and pairing steps, but it isnât relaying the gameplay during the stream. The aim is to let a Moonlight client connect to your PS5 much like it would connect to a Sunshine host.
This is still a prototype on a jailbroken PS5, not a release you can install today. The Shield results are real, but weâre still working through reliability and controller feel. We havenât verified client-rendered 1080p60 or measured input latency, Windows Moonlight has not yet shown working live picture and sound, and Android remains untested.
Even with those limits, seeing a PS5 game appear in Moonlightâand then actually playing it with a controller on the Shieldâfelt like a big step. PS5Stream is turning âwhat if the PS5 could host Moonlight?â into something we can play and improve.
