ROSTER MOVE Do Red Sox have enough left in farm system to trade for 30-home run slugger?

No and teams often dont trade 30 HR sluggers

61

u/TheOysterForager 16h ago

Very true. If anything the Red Sox do the opposite.

26

u/ScoresGalore 15h ago

No we will not trade Franklin Arias and Henry Godbout. And Gasper is only tradeable for Aaron Judge.

3

u/PsychWriter11 13h ago

You mean when they traded a GG 30 HR guy for literally the worst hitter in the majors?

That was Bloomie, though.

1

u/BosoxNelly 6h ago

Who are we talking about?

3

u/PsychWriter11 5h ago

Renfroe for JBJ.

I assumed there was another move coming. No, they literally replaced Renfroe with that 0fer.

22

u/MusicListener3 16h ago

It’s funny because I think people think 30 HR hitters are more common than they really are.

While Aaron Judge is an obvious omission (given the injuries), there were only 22 hitters who had 30+ homers this year: https://www.mlb.com/stats/regular-season

Which of these guys should we be selling the farm for?

4

u/RayDanielsOnTheAir Car Shield Actor 15h ago

But your standard is also a bit strict. It is really players who are CAPABLE of 30-homer seasons. There are more than 22 players in the MLB capable of it in any given season.

7

u/rwillh11 5 14h ago

sure, but by this definition the Red Sox already have several players on their roster who are 30 homer capable. (Contreras, Anthony, Abreu, Mead if this year is real, Casas showed that kind of power last time he was healthy...).

The focus on power seems a bit misguided anyways, productive hitters are what we need, however they get to that production.

5

u/RayDanielsOnTheAir Car Shield Actor 13h ago

I would argue Contreras is really the only guy capable right now. Roman maybe, but he has only had one month in his entire career to this point where he was on pace for 30-plus home runs, and Abreu is the streaky hitter that he is. We will see about Mead, especially off a wrist injury. And I’m not counting on Casas for anything at all.

But based on your list we have productive hitters, and yet we failed to produce.

1

u/rwillh11 5 12h ago

Well, more than half of the list was injured…

We could use another bat or two, but not clear to me that it must be a “30 hr guy”

1

u/BosoxNelly 6h ago

I’ll say it again the team as currently constructed isn’t enough offensively. F*** 30, we really need a 40hr guy, and almost as important, we need guys at the top of the order who don’t strike out 1/3+ of the time. I felt like I was watching the Red Sox during Cleveland’s elimination game vs the White Sox. Just embarrassingly bad offensively.

1

u/KingXeiros 6h ago edited 6h ago

The answer is Elly with the caveat that you absolutely extend him, but since he only has a year left till free agency you’re better off hoping he makes it to FA and then go full out to get him.

Yordan makes a ton of sense as well considering he is a FA in 29 so you have years of control, but Im not sure the Astros would indeed move him, and we would also have to finally do a hard clear of some dead weight on the roster (duran, yoshida, maybe story as well). I dont think our front office could properly do it.

1

u/PsychWriter11 13h ago

It just felt like they were common when so many were available last year:

3

u/will2fight 13h ago

Yoshida and a couple prospects for Schwarber sounds good to me

6

u/Mother-Associate1654 15h ago

We traded one for the corpse of JBJ. Lmao

7

u/Redbubble89 15h ago

Renfroe became unplayable by 2023.

-9

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

Maybe they would've made the playoffs in 2022?

3

u/Redbubble89 13h ago

You must be joking. No they fucking wouldn't.

Maybe if I put this horn on this horse, he suddenly becomes a unicorn that grants wishes.

Who was closing out games in 2022?

Who was starting?

They were not making the playoffs with Hunter Renfroe.

The outfield was really bad but Pivetta lead the team in innings behind Wacha, Rich Hill, and Eovaldi who were injured for long stretches of the year. They gave 15 starts to Josh Winckowski. They were out of starters by July. John Schrieber was the best arm but Hansel Robles, Ryan Brasier, Phillips Valdez, Jake Diekman, and Kaleb Ort were losing it anyways. The lineup was so injured, they had to call up Jeter Downs.

They should have sold and the only thing good about 2022 is that they traded for Wilyer who no one saw until 2024.

2

u/No-Artichoke-3593 5h ago

My favorite player when I was little was Philips Valdez, sounds so fake but I promise

2

u/Redbubble89 5h ago

are you like 12?

2

u/No-Artichoke-3593 5h ago

I was around that age when I liked him

0

u/Possible_Climate_245 13h ago

Yeah no I know they weren't making the playoffs in 2022. Who knows, maybe they should have resigned Kyle Schwarber. Him plus Devers, JD, Renfroe, etc would at least have kept their offense afloat. And I remember that although they were injured, Wacha, Hill, and Eovaldi had good stretches that year.

1

u/Redbubble89 13h ago edited 13h ago

Then why did you say that they were? They had the 5th highest payroll, over the luxury tax, and finished 78-84 which was last place that season. It was a miracle that they even won that many games. It was the main reason why Chaim got fired because the old rules had them needing to reset.

They had so much to JD, Eovaldi, Sale, Bogaerts in the last year, and still paying half of David Price. They couldn't throw more money at a grossly flawed roster. It was the worst pitching staff I have ever seen on the Red Sox between 2022 and 2023. They were not winning shit. The offense was fine. Losing 28-5 was the problem. I drove an hour to Baltimore that season and they lost 15-10 in a Kutter Crawford start. We would have killed for that offense this season.

-1

u/Possible_Climate_245 13h ago

Yeah, fair enough. I'll admit that 2022 is probably the least I've ever followed of a single Sox season in my life, so I may be misremembering what the actual issues were that year.

Regardless, they still should have resigned Schwarber.

2

u/Redbubble89 13h ago

As good as Schwarber is, signing a DH with no outfield, rotation, or bullpen is rather stupid. Every position on the field had a gigantic question mark going into 2022. As bad as the Story contract is, at least he plays a position. Bogaerts contract is a joke on the Padres. The only young players at that time were Verdugo and Duran and both didn't look like stars. Funny how the Devers thing turned out but he was the only thing they could really do. They didn't draft Anthony yet and Ceddanne was a run of the mill 21 year old in High A.

0

u/Possible_Climate_245 13h ago

Yes, all very true.

Now, I'm being a bit silly--but play along for a second. Imagine if they don't trade Betts or Benintendi, still sign Renfroe and don't trade him to reacquire JBJ, and then still make the mid-season trade for Schwarber and then resign him. Do you think THAT team sniffs the wild card?

Jesus Christ, who is downvoting every single one of my posts even when I agree with the person. You must be miserable.

-5

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

No, just the Sox (Betts, Renfroe, Devers).

3

u/RaymondSpaget 14h ago

They traded almost nothing for Tyler O'Neill, two years ago, and he hit 31. Contreras hit 27 this year. The fuck you talking about?

-6

u/Possible_Climate_245 13h ago

They traded almost nothing for one year of Tyler O'Neill who, to that point in his career, had only hit 30 homers once, three years prior (2021). He was a bargain basement, buy-low acquisition. Then he hit 31 homers for them in 2024 and they let him walk in free agency.

And Willson Contreras??? Let's not act like he's the cream of the crop when it comes to power-hitting. You mention his 27 homers. That's great. That's literally his career high for homers in a single season. His previous career high was 24. He's been a mid to low 20s homer guy for his entire career.

The point I made is that the Red Sox have not prioritized consistent, high-powered offense since the Betts trade. They traded him. They traded for Schwarber mid-season but let him walk. That was awful. They let Bogaerts walk although you can say that they accidentally walked into a good move with that one. They traded Renfroe for JBJ's corpse. They traded Devers for what effectively turned out to be Caleb Durbin.

In short, don't come at me when you don't have the facts and your point makes no sense. I almost feel like you looked at my icon and thought "woman doesn't know baseball." Fuck off.

2

u/RaymondSpaget 10h ago

I have no idea what you mean by your "icon", but since you went there -

u/hands0megenius 15h ago

I mean really. Who would trade a consistent 30 homerun hitter for a couple of unproven prospects in this day and age

11

u/maxfaigen1 15h ago

Those hoping for lots of big changes for the roster are gonna be disappointed. There isn’t much out there. I think they run it back out there with mead and arias and call it a day.

2

u/rhcpbassist234 8h ago

I think replacing Duran with Seiya Suzuki or Teruaki Sato isn’t unreasonable.

9

u/Majestic_Repair_7887 15h ago

Everyone needs to hit two extra home runs instead.

8

u/pi3Eat3r52 16h ago

idk about a trade unless its a team trying to unload a big contract, but sign Randy and hes built for fenway

-8

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

This team doesn't sign good position players to free agent contracts anymore.

31

u/Traditional_Half842 16h ago

Where do they have the room to add another positional player without making a bunch of subtractions from the MLB roster? They already have way too many positional players. They're in a weird place where they need to trade away several guys on the 40 man roster before they can even consider adding a new bat to the team - regardless of whether or not they have the prospect capital to acquire the guy.

15

u/BizarroWadsworth 15h ago

We just started Nate Eaton in a playoff game after everyone spent the offseason fretting about having 4 outfielders on the opening day roster

Worrying about having too many players before mid-March is silly (and even then it's not a big deal).

1

u/PsychWriter11 13h ago

Good point. It was a good point in the spring, too, when everyone was panicking over a ‘logjam’ that included an overpaid “OF” (LOL) DH with prodigious singles-hitting power.

-1

u/Traditional_Half842 14h ago

There's like 17 guys ahead of Nate Eaton they need to worry about. A lot of them were hurt which necessitated Eaton playing in the playoffs, but it doesn't mean the org can just go acquire guys that make Mead/Anthony/etc redundant.

2

u/PsychWriter11 13h ago

They dont need “guys” at this point. Its way harder to find a power hitter than it was last year when they passed on multiple options, but the addition of 1 legit 30 HR guy in a lineup that might also include added power in Mead and Anthony is a huge upgrade. Moving a useless singles hitting DH or an extra piece somewhere else is not an obstacle to finding a power guy and penciling him in every day.

1

u/BizarroWadsworth 14h ago

They don't play another game for 5+ months. There is no such thing as redundancy yet.

I'm not saying they should ignore positional depth entirely (no reason to use assets for another catcher or center fielder), but this team needs good hitters way more than the risk of having 2 second basemen on the roster.

1

u/Traditional_Half842 14h ago

There is no such thing as redundancy yet.

There are only 40 spots on the 40 man roster so there is always a potential for redundancy. I'm not saying what they should/shouldn't do just pointing out how the org operates and how it will be a little more complicated than just trading prospects for everyday starters.

31

u/dickieb81 15h ago

They have been clinging to a log jam of mediocre position players for 3 years and using it as an excuse to do nothing

4

u/Traditional_Half842 14h ago

I wouldn't say they've done nothing. They signed Bregman, they acquired Contreras, Durbin, and Mead. They have added some players. But the logjam is also probably bigger now than it's ever been.

0

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

Which is exactly what they want to do--nothing.

1

u/John_Self_2077 15h ago

There are several moves off the 40-man coming either way.

6

u/socialistbcrumb 15h ago

They need to trade from the major league roster, actually use money, and then probably trust in Mead, Arias, and Anthony being real players. I’m not holding my breath that all of that happens or works out, but they’re not completely screwed.

1

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

Sign Randy and trade at least Duran if not Abreu as well. Do what you can with Story and Yoshida--buy out, salary dump, whatever.

6

u/BizarroWadsworth 14h ago

You can't "buy out" contracts.

2

u/PsychWriter11 13h ago

Because signing a 30 HR guy and dumping a 20 HR guy and a 25 HR guy will solve their pathetic power problem.

-1

u/Possible_Climate_245 13h ago

Duran was one of if not the worst hitters in baseball last year. He's been trending downward each year since 2024. And Abreu doesn't hit .250, is way too hot and cold, and has never done anything in the postseason. I'll take the guy who rakes at Fenway and has better postseason results.

4

u/PsychWriter11 13h ago

I understand your take, but that Gold Glove in RF is something, too. I dont think subtracting Duran and Abreu for just Randy is a net plus, though. I guess Ive found him hot and cold, too.

I honestly dont know who I target right now. I wanted Alonso bad.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/HauntedFrigateBird 13h ago

We could trade for that Devers guy.

3

u/PsychWriter11 4h ago

Well, given the fact SF was actively trying to give his contract away last season proves dumping him wasn’t entirely a bad idea.

7

u/outsideroutsider 16h ago

Seiya Suzuki 👀

4

u/ChaimBloom 16h ago

Maybe. Contreras was traded for Dobbins, Fajardo and Aita last offseason. While he wasn’t a 30 HR guy, he was our best hitter and it didn’t cost huge prospect capital to get him.

5

u/No_Rule_2294 15h ago

Would you trade Story straight up for Stanton? Both on big contracts and in their last year and both have had health issues. But Stanton at Fenway.... Sheesh.

36

u/ishoweredtoday 14h ago edited 14h ago

If Stanton came to Boston the incompetent medical staff here would probably euthanize him.

7

u/Substantial-Key-6100 14h ago

i read that and nearly pissed myself laughing

6

u/BizarroWadsworth 14h ago

When you have a chance to have 2 salary albatross DHs on your roster who can't stay healthy or play defense, you have to take it.

2

u/PaceFace89 14h ago

Hell no

1

u/LowDrag_777 13h ago

I like your thinking I would do that trade

2

u/2dayman 15h ago

Which 30 home run slugger is due to tear his icl?

2

u/Ok-Egg2108 13h ago

how about just paying money to get one in that crazy

4

u/carv1991 15h ago

This team has all these prospects that are supposed to be good. Which I’ll give it to Roman Anthony, when his on his good, but to be competitive in the MLB, you need players that are MLB ready. Players that have been in the league for a few years. Don’t want to sign a 30 year old to a 6 year contract is kind of ridiculous to me.

2

u/Traditional_Half842 12h ago

Don’t want to sign a 30 year old to a 6 year contract is kind of ridiculous to me.

Red Sox have always operated this way dating back to 2004. It's been true for all four of their title teams this century. The first thing John Henry tried to do when he bought the team was trade away Manny Ramirez's contract, because he hated long-term megadeals. And if you look at the 5+ year contracts this org has given out in free agency - particularly to positional players - they have mostly been terrible contracts.

3

u/BosoxNelly 5h ago

Most long term contracts haven’t worked out…Xander’s contract is an albatross, Devers will be. Even Betts (while I love him) is slowing down. If you can absorb infinite bad contracts then what’s the worry? But most organizations can’t. Could Boston? Probably. The irony is we really could’ve used Devers bat this year, but I don’t regret getting rid of that contract. My Giants friends are despondent over him and Adames contracts.

1

u/No_Tax8243 31m ago edited 16m ago

All of the megadeals you take your lumps on the back end. Even Pujols, Cabrera, and the greats of this era. But that's the price you have to pay/market value to get them in their prime.

Additionally, Devers' contract is only going to look better over the length of his prime. Vlad and Soto have already signed for nearly double his total contract value, and average players are signing for higher AAV.

3

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

This team doesn't want to sign big contracts, period. They don't want to take any risk whatsoever. Five years is the most they're willing to go on any FA signing. Ranger Suarez was their last big FA signing and that was a panic move because they fucked up Bregman and it was probably a way for Henry to make it up to Breslow since he loves left-handed pitchers.

6

u/carv1991 12h ago

Just frustrating. Especially when two players waived their no-trade clause to go to Boston. Them trading Early was shocking. They were in talks with Alonso who could’ve been the DH

1

u/DarkGift78 11h ago

No, he couldn't have. He didn't want to DH and considers himself a 1st baseman. Would've looked great hitting at Fenway in the middle of a lineup though.

1

u/No_Tax8243 33m ago

They lowballed Alonso with a laughable offer. Much like they do all of the elite players that come up in FA. Then settle for 2nd and 3rd tier guys.

3

u/LowDrag_777 13h ago

This team wants to run like a business. Young and not too extended on the contract you’re paying them. If you pay for pitching, you’ll keep the fans coming back.

3

u/Possible_Climate_245 13h ago

Precisely. Having good pitching and young, at least relatively talented offense is a great way to have a good but not great team that sells out in the regular season and makes the WC only to get romped in New York.

2

u/Artistic-Menu9914 10h ago

Yep. We have a real niece NL central team here, good for 83-87 wins a season, enough to make the playoffs and go nowhere since we don't have any real superstars or power hitters that command attention. Why should they spend money to field a team capable of winning a title? Fenway is a tourist destination and people will keep buying RS merchandise no matter what.

5

u/RaymondSpaget 13h ago

Five years is the most they're willing to go on any FA signing.

Nobody signed anybody for more than five years, last winter, except Toronto with Cease.

Ranger Suarez was their last big FA signing

Well, yeah, and it was the second-biggest FA pitcher signing of last winter. You make it sound like this was a decade ago.

it was probably a way for Henry to make it up to Breslow since he loves left-handed pitchers.

You're a genius!

2

u/WiseWinter6425 8h ago

You get it, you are exactly right point is they do not want to spend any money period. The only player they paid for was Suarez and that was because that did not sign Bregman.Main objective is probably to reduce payroll.

2

u/Cesar_Crespo 14h ago

That’s a lot of talent to give away for a catcher who hit .222 with a .688 OPS in 126 plate appearances and has only one more year of team control.

It's just 126 PAs and a player who plays + defense at a premium position where offensive production is scarce. I stopped reading here.

In any case this fandom's obsession with power is getting old. Yes, they need it, but it shouldn't be at the expense of overall value. The Sox need to be become a better regular season team before "built for the post-season" becomes a primary consideration for player acquisition, and that can be done simply by adding WAR where they have accumulated less. Power can certainly help that but also shouldn't be the only consideration.

4

u/CustardLimp359 12h ago

Hrs are cool but the rays hit 6 more hr than us this year. We hit 1 more hr than the guardians and 9 more hr than the brewers. Teams apparently do not need tons of hr for postseason success.

7

u/Cesar_Crespo 11h ago

Yeah ikr? Was just looking at those totals.

You know what I think would really help the Red Sox in the postseason? Not having to face Fried and Schlittler in a best-of-three on the road! You can avoid that by winning a few more regular season games, which can be achieved in a variety of ways.

1

u/Artistic-Menu9914 10h ago

They do when they get to the postseason. The numbers tell the story. We don't need a ton of big bats, but we do need at least 1 guy who is a big power threat. Ownership needs to stop being cheap as hell and do what it takes to get that player, but they won't.

3

u/whorootbeerdatbe 13h ago

Rutschman was also playing hurt, so he could potentially bounce back into top-5 form as well.

3

u/YungLo97 10h ago

The only team that trades 30 home run guys is the Sox

7

u/cathandler2019 16h ago

Or just acquire one in free agency...

u/cossack190 Last soldier fighting on Kristian Campbell Island 16h ago

3

u/cossack190 Last soldier fighting on Kristian Campbell Island 10h ago

didn't say it wasn't. Just because you're mad about it doesn't mean there's magically going to be a premier player in this free agency class.

2

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

Could have had Alonso last offseason. O's paid him peanuts.

1

u/OkNeighborhood8365 12h ago

We added Contreras

2

u/Possible_Climate_245 12h ago

Yes and that was good. Contreras has still never hit 30 homers in his career and they should have signed Alonso last offseason as well. You don't need to trade Early for Curtis Mead if they have Alonso's 43 homers and 113 RBI.

1

u/cossack190 Last soldier fighting on Kristian Campbell Island 14h ago

I wish we'd added Alonso but 150 mil is not peanuts.

3

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

They spent nearly that much on Ranger Suarez. O's spent their money better.

-6

u/Sorry_Band2795 14h ago

I forget, which team made the playoffs?

3

u/PsychWriter11 13h ago

I always liked Ranger, but this team needed power, end of story. Alonso was the obvious, easy choice. And the fact is, they needed Alonso AND Contreras because they werent gonna pay for Bregman. It was an easy fix for a popgun offense and they dropped the ball..

Sox could have survived without Ranger by adding 43+ HRs quite well, thank you. They might have even kept Connolly Early.

1

u/Possible_Climate_245 13h ago

DING DING DING. The only thing is I'm not sure how the fielding plays out with both Alonso and Contreras. One obviously plays first and the other DHs. They would have had to address the glut of Duran, Yoshida, etc. and they weren't going to do that until they felt they absolutely had to because they're just so in love with Jarren effing Duran for whatever reason.

2

u/PsychWriter11 13h ago

They simply had to make the ridiculous mistake that was Yoshi go away. Contreras and Alonso could have time-shared DH and 1B easily, with Contreras the preferred fielder when it mattered. Those 2 in the lineup was the answer to SO many questions, including the Bregman drama.

I understand why they tried so hard to give Duran a long leash. His power/speed combo and ability to ignite a lineup was intoxicating at one time, but this years fizzle and weird behavioral unnecessary drama punches his ticket out of town now.

2

u/Possible_Climate_245 13h ago

Seriously, thank you. This subreddit be slobbin on Henry's cigar.

-2

u/Sorry_Band2795 13h ago

So I’m slobbin on a cigar but you’re saying a team who failed to make the playoffs had a better offseason than a team who made the playoffs. You’re sippin on haterade. It’s okay to have nuance in sports discussion

2

u/Possible_Climate_245 12h ago

I didn't say that the Orioles had a better offseason than the Red Sox. So you're putting words in my mouth.

What I said is that the Orioles made a better free agent signing than the Red Sox did, IN MY OPINION. I would have preferred the Sox have signed Pete Alonso over Ranger Suarez, and I still feel that way. As u/PsychWriter11 said, they could have had both Alonso and Contreras if they had simply also dealt with the Duran/Yoshida issue.

Secondly, yes, it is possible for a team to have a better offseason and still miss the playoffs. If a team makes three great free agent signings that help the team but everyone else gets hurt and they miss the playoffs, they can have a worse season than another team who did nothing in the offseason but has a really great bullpen and performs really well in one-run games.

1

u/Sorry_Band2795 13h ago

Or you know have some nuance or perspective. Ranger Suarez and Pete Alonso were both good signings for their respective clubs

-1

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

Alonso led the AL in home runs (43), RBI (113), with an .884 OPS, 4.9 WAR, and 161 games played. Suarez only pitched 148.1 innings, not enough to qualify for the ERA title, and had merely a 2.7 WAR although he did have a 3.22 ERA and a 3.16 FIP.

I prefer Alonso's production to Suarez's. Now you can say that Suarez and Contreras is better than just Alonso. Sure, but they could have added Alonso and traded for another pitcher.

-2

u/AerieElectrical3546 pedeyhof 16h ago edited 12h ago

could get Lowe and DH him

edit: he’s a 30+ homer guy, idk why this is getting downvoted

4

u/PsychWriter11 13h ago

You mean when there were multiple ones available last offseason and they never even made a good faith offer to any of them?

1

u/LOFan80 12h ago

Such as?

The only guy who I wanted was Alonso. If they had gotten Pete then no Wilson. Alonso but more HR but Contreras was probably the better player overall.

Who else would have made a difference?

The Phillies have done exactly what all of you want the Sox to do and not only ended up in the same place, are royally screwed for the future because of a whole bunch of bad contracts.

Who has never hit 30 home runs and requires at least 2 outgoing trades (that other teams likely don't want) to acquire

2

u/RaymondSpaget 13h ago

He'd also cost a draft pick to sign, and is going to be 32 years old on opening day. Someone (I'll guess the Phillies) are going to pay a horrible price for this guy.

1

u/No_Rule_2294 14h ago

I'm all for parades over prospects. You won't find someone with 30 HRs in FA27 or via trade. Unless you want to go after Suarez. I like Arozarena to play LF/DH with Anthony. We don't need another LHH like Lowe unless we trade one of the LHH OFs (Anthony, Abreu, Masa).

-2

u/Possible_Climate_245 14h ago

Randy rakes at Fenway. Trade Duran to the phillies for a bum reliever like the other duran or kerkering.

3

u/backwardsfittedcap 11h ago

Bottom 5 qualified hitter in the sport for top 5 reliever hell ya Dombroski let’s do it

1

u/Sirgolfs 16h ago

Yeah, but the analytics say…

1

u/rmullig2 15h ago

If the Dodgers decide to go after Sato in the offseason then they would probably make Muncy available.

4

u/will2fight 13h ago

Muncy is a franchise guy at this point, they wouldn’t burn that bridge. I know we aren’t use to it, but LA actually knowS how to treat fan-favorites

1

u/EnthusiasmMean6608 15h ago

We had schwarber and Cora let him go for Jd Martinez was DH then. Worked out well for us.

1

u/taco_jones 14h ago

What position is open?

1

u/AdDesigner6924 14h ago edited 14h ago

I don't think Seiya is an option unless you manage to get rid of Story, Duran, and Yoshida's money. So we're in it for the long haul. Developing Justin Gonzalez or signing Munetaka Murakami is your best bet. Maybe it works out. Maybe it doesn't.

1

u/LowDrag_777 13h ago

No, but we should on the active roster

1

u/Tricky-Watercress176 13h ago

We have arguably the best prospect in all of baseball.

1

u/TheToug 9h ago

Who out there could be the 2027 version of 2010 Adrian Beltre to come to Boston and ball out (.321 BA, 28hrs, 49 Doubles, 102 RBI). RH power hitters should love Fenway, like Beltre did. Bergman being the most recent example.

Idk who can fill that void but mannnnn if the Sox could find another Beltre. Man oh man.

1

u/peterlagoriosr 8h ago

How about someone who can hit a clutch single with RISP?

1

u/Taterbuggin2thebank 4h ago

I would just go all in on high contact rate and high obp.

1

u/No_Tax8243 34m ago

The Giants seem to be rebuilding with a young team. Do they have a slugger that hit 37HR, 98 RBIs that could help the Sox win now?

1

u/Silky_Mango 17h ago

No, it’s almost certainly going to take some MLB roster talent given how depleted the system is.

1

u/timbo_slice45 14h ago

Too bad we didn’t have one of these guys already. There aren’t many players good for 30 home runs a year anymore, you really shouldn’t part ways with them.

0

u/HauntedFrigateBird 13h ago

Yeah, like we could have had that Devers guy in San Francisco...

3

u/Sorry_Negotiation_75 9h ago

And we would if he wasn’t a selfish toxic asshole who refused to help his team and pick up a 1st Baseman’s glove.

1

u/HauntedFrigateBird 1h ago

After they told him he was their 3B for life....then immediately signed someone else. Then asked him to DH then asked him to play 1B.

1

u/No_Tax8243 31m ago

He was fine for 8 years though? You're going to prioritize a couple bad months? Lol.

He's exactly the bat the Sox need. They cut off their nose to spite their face.

0

u/PsychWriter11 4h ago

100% spot on.

1

u/timbo_slice45 3h ago

Was he? Or did the Red Sox force him out on purpose? Did they do everything in their power to alienate him to make sheep like you think he was a cancer? And yes, Sam penishead Kennedy is that calculated

1

u/PsychWriter11 2h ago

Ha, sheep? Ok. His telling the Manager, GM and Owner he wouldn’t do as asked is me being “sheep.”

0

u/PsychWriter11 4h ago

Those players shouldn’t selfishly unprofessionally get themselves traded.

1

u/Pedroiaa15_ 14h ago edited 14h ago

The Guardians hit 162 HRs this season, and the Brewers hit 154. Both less than the Red Sox (163) and both teams are still playing. I agree power is a big component and the Sox should have signed Bregman last year. But Bregman also went 0-8 in the Cubs’ Wild Card series.

This is really about working counts and getting timely hits, wherever they land. They just need better hitters who can handle good pitching. Devers could, even though he is getting fatter by the day and got hurt this year as well… Also the Mets spent a ton of money and are terrible. Have to identify the right guys.

1

u/Patsnation0330 16h ago

Only way this happens is if they trade from the MLB roster.

1

u/Sirgolfs 16h ago

Why do we need a home run hitter? We all just listened to the front office Tell us how everyone’s hitting more home runs. /s

-7

u/LoudIncrease4021 16h ago

No - Breslow has more or less blown all his real chips on middling hitters in panic moves because he foolishly failed to sign cost effective veterans the last two off-seasons.

Next question.

2

u/Blanketsburg 15h ago

Everyone wanted Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso for a big bat last offseason, and neither would ever be called "cost effective". Wilson Contreras was literally the cost-effective acquisition.

2

u/Patsnation0330 16h ago

Wrong but hey at least you tried

2

u/Imaginary-Length8338 16h ago

Outside of Arias, name these high end prospects that can land us a big bat?

-2

u/Patsnation0330 16h ago

I agree with the first few words but the rest of the post is nonsense.

-1

u/LoudIncrease4021 9h ago

Low effort reply, Craig

1

Accusing me of low effort and following it up with that? LOL

0

Pathetic, Craig

1

u/Patsnation0330 4h ago

More low effort garbage. Hey at least your consistent!

u/LoudIncrease4021 4h ago

Thanks Craig. Be sure to log into your support accounts to like and support your posts.

1

Yeah man totally. I'm not the one who actually downvoted the other person's comments.... If anything the multiple accounts idea is a bunch of projection on your end. You certainly fit the profile of a terminally online loser.

I couldn't care less about Reddit votes or karma. How's that for low effort?

1

u/LoudIncrease4021 3h ago

Look at me… now managing to waste your time. How the tables have turned.

Try again

1

u/Patsnation0330 2h ago

Turning tables requires more effort than you're able to give. Try again.

-1

u/1up5000 13h ago

Nope, Sox are currently on a strict diet of 'just enough to make you as a fan be invested and spend money on fenway sports group merchandise (i.e. spending $15 per beer), but not enough to escape a first round wild card exit (proof: the last 2 seasons). I hope i'm wrong.

2

u/LOFan80 12h ago

What a dumb comment considering in the last two off seasons they traded for Crochet, Grey and Contreras. Which is WHY op is asking the question, they’ve given up a lot of prospects.

0

u/Tmac34002003 6h ago

How about spend some money in FA and not constantly gut the farm system for washed up catchers

-18

u/FuckHarambe2016 RIP Farm System 16h ago

No because we traded everyone for a past his prime catcher who can't stay healthy.

14

u/Jamaral11 16h ago

Apparently 28 is past your prime now

1

u/cossack190 Last soldier fighting on Kristian Campbell Island 16h ago

It's more about the fact that he's been injured and nothing special for three years in a row now.

3

u/Cesar_Crespo 14h ago

Adley has been above average defensively every year of his career and above average offensively every year besides 2025. That's very difficult to replace in a catcher. Of course that was going to cost a lot.

0

u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 12h ago

Liam Hicks won't cost $100M+ this offseason & was acquired for relative pennies compared to Adley. Adley's the better player sure, but the opportunity cost of the Adley trade was massive

3

u/Cesar_Crespo 12h ago edited 12h ago

Adley is under control for next year. If they spend $100 million on him it's because they have extended him because they see him as a solid primary catcher for the next few years.

The sheer value in the package for Adley might have been worse for the Red Sox, but when they don't have that many roster holes I think some inefficiency is an acceptable trade-off for the better player.

0

u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 11h ago

I mean yeah they're going to be extending him

& yeah I actually do agree with that general train of thought, I just think that inefficiency was huge in this case - it's hard to see a world where they're acquiring a ++ bat this offseason with assets or $$ & I think that's very tied to the Adley trade

3

u/Cesar_Crespo 11h ago

I just think the catcher position is extra worth it considering how scarce established production is and the Sox' lack of top catching prospects. Like, every playoff team's fanbase was hankering for a catcher this trade deadline and throwing outlandish proposals for names like Langeliers and Gooman -- and then the Sox got someone arguably better.

And I kind of feel like a ++ bat would cost Arias either way, and I personally hope they don't go that route.

1

u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 9h ago

Understandable, I just don't view Adley at a premium with the injury/performance questions & needing to pay him. I'd take Hicks+Eyanson+FA bat in a heartbeat over Adley - Who knows maybe they surprise us and really push the payroll with paying both Adley+a FA bat

-1

u/conrey 16h ago

For a catcher it’s closer than you think

0

u/jay_rodsep 16h ago

For the catcher we’re talking about, it is.

5

u/BizarroWadsworth 15h ago

The collective psychosis about the Adley trade is wild to me. He was one of the only hitters who had competitive at bats in the postseason and was elite behind the plate. None of the guys they traded have played in an inning in MLB.

1

u/cossack190 Last soldier fighting on Kristian Campbell Island 14h ago

He was one of the only hitters who had competitive at bats in the postseason and was elite behind the plate.

He was 1 for 8 hitting and allowed a runner to reach on a dropped 3rd strike and then let him get to third on a throwing error. Please be serious.

0

u/Qeltar_ 6h ago

Ever feel like you're in an episode of The Twilight Zone? :)

1

u/Qeltar_ 13h ago

The downvotes on this are hilarious.

Everyone really wants to fool themselves into believing that that was a good trade even though it is 100% obvious now that it was incredibly stupid.

-7

u/TheMikeD68 16h ago

If they had traded fewer prospects for Liam Hicks rather than emptying the farm for Adley, maybe…

-6

u/RicooC 16h ago

If everyone hits 20 then they don't need to trade away valuable prospects.

2

u/whorootbeerdatbe 13h ago

That monkey's paw is gonna curl and the whole lineup is gonna put up Jarren Duran numbers next year.

2

u/RicooC 13h ago

😟

1

u/bluedood 16h ago

The problem is they need elite bat(s) that can handle elite pitching in the postseason. I agree in the regular season you can get by with your approach.

2

u/RicooC 16h ago

There are few elite bats thar can give 30 home runs. How many elite bats that were in free agency last year earned their contracts? Three? ...and who would be available this free agency year? If you draft right then this isn't an issue.

1

u/bluedood 16h ago

Ya I don't have the answer on who they could/should aquire, just saying that come postseason the game changes and a handful of 20 HR guys who can't hit elite pitching isn't going to get the job done.

1

u/RicooC 13h ago

This is getting exceedingly difficult. Most of the big contracts are horrendous failures. Red Sox should have been in on Pete Alonso, but got Contreras. Not bad. The most painful thing to watch is Schlitler and Ben Rice on the Yankees. They grew up here and both were available to Red Sox in draft.

1

u/bluedood 13h ago

Ya agreed it's very difficult and almost always requires what the team and analysts would categorize as an "overpay", whether that is a contract via free agency or prospects. The frustrating part is the Red Sox have the ability to facilitate these deals without it impacting other areas of the team (obviously it takes a bit longer to rebuild the farm system than it does to write a free agency check), but they choose not to because they value profits over playoff success.

2

u/Cesar_Crespo 14h ago

Unpopular opinion but the Red Sox need to be a better regular season team before being built for the post-season starts to become a consideration.

Also, it's not as if only 30 homer bats have ever hit home runs in the playoffs. Bryce Turang and William Contreras account for both HRs hit in this NLCS and they had 21 and 18 respectively this year. More length could still help the Red Sox in those circumstances.

1

u/bluedood 14h ago

Ya to be clear I am certainly not saying 30 HRs alone makes for an elite batter. It's a small sample size but the last 2 postseasons the bats have been pretty silent. We all hope Anthony can stay healthy and elevate his game to match his potential; it wouldn't really matter to me if he hits 25 HRs or 35 HRs in the regular season. What I want to see is batters putting together tough ABs in the post season, seeing lots of pitches, wearing starters out and also, hopefully, see some power results as well.

-6

u/Prestigious-Echo-164 16h ago

They need to trade Roman Anthony now.
