Very cool! I am a professional video and photo guy. I use a smart phone on my TV through a usb c to HDMI cord for a teleprompter. I have the TV mounted to an old music stand so I can position it anywhere, it's awesome. Very cool idea op

Samsung galaxy phones are awesome with their full video output support through USB. On newer models, you can run full desktop like interface on external screen.

Its an S4 Active. Once I learned it had a native video out I knew it was worth saving. Even if it was from a proprietary 11 pin microUSB port. "MHL" apparently.

It's standard micro USB with mhl support. Had a couple of HTC phones with same port.

11 pin not 5 pin. Its wider then a standard micro USB. both kinds will charge the phone.

Oh yes, samsung did use a weird USB micro 3.0 11pin one on s4 and s5, apparently also on S4 active.

But Mhl allowed hdmi out using standard 5 pin micro USB.

Well not on the s4 active. I tried. But MHL And charging at the same time is nice.

It was / is the standard micro USB 3.0. Other devices like external hard drives, hubs, and monitors used it, some still do too. Nothing proprietary about it, it's just worse than type C.

Proprietary port also explains the cable length, was about to ask you if you couldn't find a longer one for a few more wrap arounds.

Some other manufacturers also have video out, but i haven't found any yet that allow the internal screen to be off even with an external connected.

Thought this was a raspberry pi running some homebrew smart tv firmware at first but nope, cell phone and a rubber band. Honestly a great use for old phones

Unironicly the Samsung devices that support dex casting over usb c are the best media devices for smart tv use. I broke my screen and kept using it plugged in as a media hub for awhile.
