Discussion [Mega-Thread] Posts for Recomps/Decomps/Ports for Current Generation Consoles are now banned.

I'm aware this is going to be an extremely unpopular post.

Effective immediately, individual posts regarding recompilations, decompilations, or unofficial ports for Current Generation consoles are banned.

This will fall under Rule 12.

To be completely clear, "Current Generation" applies to any commercially active console. For the purposes of this subreddit, this includes:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X / S
  • Nintendo Switch / Switch 2

Why the change?
While reverse engineering laws offer some protection for recompilation projects, hosting content for current-generation systems brings unwanted attention to the scene. Historically, decompiling a game was a guess-and-check process that took years of manual effort. However, the recent explosion of AI-assisted reverse engineering has fundamentally changed the landscape, with AI coding agents compressing that timeline from years to mere days.

By connecting AI agents to reverse-engineering environments like Ghidra, developers are decompiling and rebuilding games at speeds previously considered impossible. We are already seeing this impact modern hardware through projects like "AnyPS5," an open-source toolchain engineered to port PlayStation 5 executables directly to standard PCs for native gaming performance without traditional emulation overhead.

Because this rapid decompilation technology has made currently produced games incredibly vulnerable, publishers may start aggressively protecting their retail products.

Edit: I knew this was going to be an unpopular opinion, I don't mind disagreeing opinions, but abusive or hateful comments will result in an immediate and permanent ban.

Discussion Well this is unfortunate, Decomp.dev is shutting down.

This is a massive loss for the community, I respect their decision, it couldn't have been easy. I don't agree with them calling out r/decomps. Also please do not try to contact the dev to harass them. They have every right to do what they want with their own project.

From the site:

Sunsetting decomp.dev

decomp.dev was born in 2024 as a way to centralize matching decompilation progress and to help expand a community of talented, like-minded folks.

Historically, matching decompilation has been a brutally difficult, time consuming task, on the scale of years for any moderately-sized game with a number of active contributors. As we developed better tooling and shared knowledge around the intricacies of decompilation, the compilers, and the games themselves, progress began to accelerate.

AI's use in decompilation has been experimented with for years, with mixed results. Starting with the release of Opus 4.6 and GPT-5.4 in early 2026, it was clear that the models were being trained on matching decompilation (they appeared to know our specific tools and how to use them without explicit guidance), and could achieve decent results inside of an established, clean codebase with exhaustive documentation. However, those results still required a significant amount of human cleanup and fixes for obvious issues or cheating (code that technically compiles to the same machine code, but could not be reasonably passed as what the original developers wrote), and the cost per task was prohibitively expensive relative to the results.

Recent models (like GPT-6-Astra) shifted things even further: they are significantly better at following complex directions, cross-referencing resources for symbols or debug information, and writing natural code with enough guidance. They are also exceptionally good permuters: they can write small scripts that test many different source code forms and combinations to find a match, even across files and headers to cover aspects like inlined helpers, signature changes, and operation ordering. In addition, their ability to remain coherent and focused across long-horizon tasks allows them to work continuously without going off the rails. Finally, they can achieve these better results faster and cheaper than earlier models could.

It is now clear that, with the right guidance, human input, and code reviews, AI can expedite the decompilation process in a significant way. What is also now clear is that the community aspect of decompilation has been broken. Our projects have always been open source to encourage contributions and to benefit the community as a whole. Bad actors have been abusing this in increasingly troublesome ways:

decomp.dev was originally designed to gamify decompilation: watching the progress go up was a fun way to stay motivated when every fraction of a percent took real human effort. Today, that same idea has warped decompilation into a hollow numbers game, exacerbated by folks who just want to burn tokens to make number go up or "port game to PC", all else be damned. While the increased attention has brought in genuine folks who want to learn and contribute meaningfully, I believe that decomp.dev serving as a public index and leaderboard is now causing more harm than good.

decomp.dev will continue to track existing projects and serve individual project pages and historical data, but the main index and adding new projects are disabled.

No. decomp.dev's repository has never had an open source license, and I continue to reserve all rights to the (entirely human written) code. Any replica must not use decomp.dev's code in any form.

I have long held the opinion that AI is not the issue by itself, and we now know it can help tremendously when used correctly. "Slop" comes in many forms, is hard to define, and even harder to moderate. As a sole hobbyist, I don't have the energy (or desire) to define what makes a "good" decompilation and enforce that consistently across the hundreds of projects on the site.

As this era of decompilation comes to a close, I want to thank everyone who's been involved and contributed to our projects, communities and tools. The people and passion behind these projects have always been what's made them fun and rewarding.

Hey guys, Claude Opus 5.5 recompiled Twisted Metal 1-4 for me since I was feeling nostalgic and wanted to play them again easily on my PC, so figured I'd share them here. There is a unified launcher with common settings and controls, widescreen 16:9/21:9 support, 30/60fps support (experimental) for Twisted Metal 1 and 2, and Smooth Motion toggleable for Twisted Metal 4 (60fps). Built using psxrecomp, thank you to those devs.

Project - AI GitHub - YYOzcan/Tobiichi-Port: God of War PS2 → PC static recompilation port. Now Available!

Klexter, GoldenGTR and Waffle presents..

GOD OF WAR TOBIICHI PORT!

Why This Project Exists

Bringing the original PS2 God of War to PC as a native port—without relying on traditional emulation overhead—has been a dream project of mine for ages. Anyone familiar with the PS2 architecture knows how notoriously complex the Emotion Engine (MIPS R5900), VUs, and Graphics Synthesizer are to work with. For a long time, tackling a static recompilation of a game of this scale felt like an uphill battle. After countless hours of debugging, reverse engineering, wrestling with instruction translation, and resolving build hurdles, I have finally achieved what I set out to do!

What is Tobiichi-Port?

At its core, Tobiichi-Port takes the original PS2 MIPS executable binary of God of War and statically recompiles the instructions ahead-of-time into C/C++ code that can be compiled natively for modern PC architectures.

Key Highlights of the Project:

  • Ahead-of-Time (AOT) Static Recompilation: Translates PS2 Emotion Engine MIPS instructions directly into portable code for native PC execution, bypassing dynamic recompilation/interpreter bottlenecks.
  • Runtime & Hardware Bridging: Handles system calls, memory mapping, and hardware abstraction so the original game logic communicates cleanly with modern OS environments.
  • Clean & Legal Distribution: As with all standard recompilation projects, no copyrighted game assets, original binaries, or ISOs are included in the repository. You will need to provide your own legally obtained copy of the original PS2 game to extract the necessary data and build/run the port.

What’s Inside the Repo?

Right now, the GitHub repository contains the full source code, the recompilation pipeline/configs, and the instructions needed to set up your environment and build the port yourself. Whether you want to test it out, look under the hood at how the PS2 binary translation is handled, or contribute to making the port even better, everything is live and open-source.

Release Trailer Coming Tomorrow! 🎬

I know everyone wants to see it in action! I am currently putting the finishing touches on the official Release Trailer, which will drop tomorrow. It will showcase the port running natively on PC, so stay tuned to the subreddit (and the GitHub repo) for the video showcase!

This has been a massive milestone for me personally, and I couldn't be happier to finally share it with the recompilation community. Feel free to star the repo, test out the build, open issues, or ask any questions down in the comments. I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback!

Discussion It's the weekend!!

I've had a busy week and no time to get on the computer and delve into the wonderful world of decomps and recomps.

It seems that every couple of hours a new one pops up.

Its the weekend and I plan on trying a few out.

In your options, what are some of the stand outs that have controller support, wide-screen fixes and graphical upgrades etc?

I am looking forward Black and Burnout 3. but I'm sure there are loads more that are worth playing.

Project - AI Disgaea D2 on Windows: the first stable release of my adaptation is now available!

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a project that grew out of my love for Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness: a Windows adaptation based on Sean13128’s work and ps3recomp.

This is my first experience working on a project like this. I’ve been learning along the way, using AI to assist with development and testing the results on my own PC.

What started as “I’ll spend a little time on this on Sunday” ended up taking the entire day. 😅 Along the way, I ran into white screens, texture glitches, audio and save issues, plus performance drops in Castle Hallway and during Mothman’s attack. Working through those problems eventually brought the project to version 0.2.0 Stable, using DirectX 12.

What’s available:

  • A custom launcher, with an installer and a portable version.
  • Automatic preparation using your own supported US game ISO and US 1.40 update.
  • Importing DLC packages supplied by the user.
  • Internal and output resolution settings, windowed/borderless fullscreen modes, VSync and spatial FSR 1 upscaling.

In my testing, battles, audio, saving/loading, DLC recognition and closing the game worked normally. I haven’t tested the entire campaign or every hardware configuration, so community feedback will be valuable.

No game files, updates, DLC, firmware or keys are included. Preparation and compilation happen locally using the files you provide. The initial setup requires internet access and can take some time.

Vulkan support is in development. DLSS and Frame Generation are not available yet, and an Android version is a future goal.

Credit for the original project goes to Sean13128 and the ps3recomp authors and contributors. My work focuses on the Windows adaptation, launcher, fixes and testing. This is an independent community project with no affiliation with the game’s rights holders.

Download and release notes:
https://github.com/LUUKASR1/disgaea-d2-recomp-windows/releases/tag/v0.2.0

If you try it, I’d love to hear how it runs on your PC! When reporting a bug, please include your hardware, graphics settings and steps to reproduce it:

Discussion Sega Rally Revo - PC recomp issues

The fantastic Sega Rally Revo is a sublime experience on the PS3 when played with a modern wheel. The handling and force feedback is outstanding, and the game runs well at a locked 30fps. Meanwhile the PC version runs in higher resolutions and runs at a better frame rate... Although it doesn't. There are weird frame pacing issues where the game runs at a super smooth 60fps but then drops a frame every second. Also the modern wheel support is poor and the best result I've had involves no force feedback and funny workarounds to allow proper use of menus.

Sega Rally Revo is a fantastic game and is crying out for a decomp/recomp to fix all these issues. How easy to do would that be? A locked 60fps full wheel experience would be incredible.

So much more to come. Let me know of any issues, I've been testing a lot. But this is one of my favorite games, if not favorite arena shooter, ever. So I'm committed to polishing this up as much as I can. Yes I used AI to do it, but I tried to utilize the fact that it makes things 'easy' to spend my time polishing it up, and adding sensible, tasteful features, without slopping hopefully. And yes I was a 'dev' before AI and I will be after. This game means a lot to me so trying to use modern tools to bring it to modern justice.

Available here: https://github.com/wootbeer/PaxDino

Requires your own properly obtained ROM.
