Ernie Cline held a rare public webinar on Oct 13th to promote the new graphic novel edition of RPO. In the webinar, he shared that he is currently working on a sci fi novel about time travel, saying:
"I'm working on a new standalone science fiction novel that deals with time travel. Kind of me geeking out on time travel. As you can see, I do that all the time. And so I feel qualified to geek out on Back to the Future and time travel. I'm a big fan and grew up adoring time travel stories and have always wanted to do my version of that. But — it'll scramble your brain like an egg, writing time travel, because of the possibilities. And so I'm still working on that non-stop, guys, when I'm not doing stuff like this."
I asked Ernie if there are any plans for another RPO book and he said:
"There is. I always envisioned and mapped the story out as a trilogy, with Ready Player One and then the sequel Ready Player Two, and then a prequel: The Middletown Adventurers' Guild, which I kind of set up in Ready Player Two. That's probably the book I'm gonna write after I finish this time travel story. So I always had an idea for the origins of the Oasis and Halliday and Morrow and Kira and their friends in high school in Ohio. It would be my version of Stranger Things and The Breakfast Club and a lot of my favorite coming-of-age '80s films like Dead Poets Society, kind of Dead Poets Society but with Dungeons Dragons instead of poetry. I've got it all kind of sketched out."
I'm excited about both of these upcoming books.
The RPO prequel has been referred to as Ready Player Zero. It wasn't clear from Ernie's comments if he was saying the book would be titled The Middletown Adventurers' Guild or just that the book would be about The Middletown Adventurers' Guild. I would guess he'd title it Ready Player Zero so it's obvious that it's in the same series.
When asked about the Ready Player Two movie, Ernie said part of the delay was due to the Warner Brothers acquisition. He said "I don't think Steven Spielberg would direct the sequel." He also said, "The Prince estate is playing ball now and giving people licenses to stuff. So I have a dream of my Prince planet being visualized in a movie."
Ernie also said that the graphic novel adaptation of Ready Player Two should be finished in 2028. He speculated that the graphic novel would likely be released before the movie.
It's rare to get updates straight from the man himself, so I hope you enjoy them!

I would love to see an oversized, hardcover annotated or illustrated coffee table book edition of RPO, filled with color photos of all the movies and games referenced in the novel. There are books like this, such as Harry Potter, the novels of Dan Brown or books annotated by author Leslie S. Klinger. I am sending a message out into the universe for this to be a thing.\ The money for this has been burning a hole in my pocket since I first read it.

I got the new RPO Graphic Novel and have been duo reading it while listening to the audio book while driving. I had a long drive today and finished the novel. I told myself before I started the audio book that I wasn't going to continue into RPT because it's character assassinating crap that retroactively harms the superior first book.
Yet I am. Because I love RPO so much. I love the characters so much. And I'm going to go into RPT AGAIN knowing the story isn't anywhere near as good and it just mischaracterizes everyone from Wade to Arty to Halladay etc. I honestly debate myself as to which character got ruined more.
I hope the RPT movie does an almost full rewrite like the RPO movie did.

Waterstones books held a one hour interview with Cline about his new RPO Graphic Novel and RPO in general. We got some great news!
- READY PLAYER THREE IS COMING! Cline is writing a "stand alone" novel (assuming unrelated to RPO), a scifi about time travel and after that one is done he'll write RP3! He'd always imagined it as a trilogy he said.
- After RP3 he has some spin off ideas including one about Kira, Og, and Halliday in college. Sort of a Breakfast Club but with D&D.
- RP2 MOVIE isn't dead! Cline sites WB mergers has at least partly to blame for the delays.
- He said he's love to see an RPO video game or MMO, and mentioned the attempt with Readyverse (boooo! hissss!) that didn't manifest.
- He also said seeing the graphic novel makes hime want an RPO anime.
I'll upload the full interview here once its ready - link here.

I've just started it, and am enjoying it so far. The illustrations are excellent :)
But does anyone else hear it in Wil Wheatons voice?
And do you find yourself automatically adding in the bits that are missing from the ends of sentences?

In the movie towards the end, he sounds a lot like Bob Newhart. Just an observation.

Hi r/readyplayerone, (this post was originally posted to r/moviesync but I'll also post it here without changing the below text)
I've done something a little different here, and I hope you'll enjoy my ingenuity.
I've been experimenting.
I've been thinking about the book Ready Player One, written by Earnest Cline, and the movie of the book, directed by Steven Spielberg.
In the book, the main character plays a "FlickSync", which is where, in the oasis virtual reality, they, as the first person to get to this stage of the contest, are required to play as the main character David Lightman from the movie War Games (1983) and recite the script and actions of this character, playing as them in a virtual reality recreation of the movie.
In the movie Ready Player One, this doesn't happen. Instead, the character has to win a car race long considered impossible or unwinnable. In the movie, the character finds a clue from the creator of the competition, who is also the creator of the oasis virtual reality. This clue leads them to realise, instead of driving forwards in the race from the starting line, they need to to reverse, driving backwards. Doing this at the start of the race, a trapdoor opens up underneath them, allowing them to complete the race through a hidden underground path. Winning the race they are given the Copper Key allowing them to continue into the next stage of the competition, and are the first person to do so.
Taking this as inspiration, I decided to attempt a "FlickSync" of the movie War Games myself, combining it with the backwards aspect of the race from the Ready Player One movie.
The War Games FlickSync can be viewed here: www.grandeyeall.com/acting?re
Enjoy.

Went to get my copy of the graphic novel the other day at Target. I didn’t even know about it till it was posted on here by a fellow gunter, so thank you!
Here’s a pic of the display they had for it. The other side of the display was all Dungeon Crawler Carl graphics and full of its books so I’m not sure why the RPO side has them at eye level and they were relegated to the bottom.
Anyways I’m super excited to crack it open. Good luck out there gunters!

That's basically my question: how would you feel if you were in the Ready Player One universe? Why were the winners in the mansion of Ogden Morrow ? I would suspect the winners were either mentored by Ogden Morrow or handpicked as his heirs, making the contest feel staged

Me&my class are reading the book for whatever reason and i just got passed the entire chapter about the sex dolls and whatever tf all that shit was,but after graduating wade got a steady supply of money, got to 99 level, got fit and became basically the opposite everything he used to be,meaning he lost everything that made him him,and don't even get me started on how he handled Art3mis's rejection oh that was so hard to read. Anyways anyone think the same way i do about this? I really don't wanna finish reading this because of the whole sex thing anyways,im asexual but im not normally sex replused but that made me sex repulsed, like i had to skip a bunch of shit of that chapter because of it.

I plan on majoring in computer science when I finally get to afford college and go. My main goal in that is to make the OASIS. (Beyond that, I plan on recreating the Gunt when I die (but with different puzzles and solutions, of course, otherwise it would be too easy.)) However, im not asking for ideas for new Gunt puzzles. Im asking: in a general play session, imagining the oasis is hypothetically currently real, what features would you want that aren't mentioned in the books or shown in the movie?

( English is not my first language)
Watched the movie and read the book and i still can't really understand what type of game Oasis is.
Like... does it has leveling? Classes? Rpg features? Or it's quite literally just a game where you can literally just do anything you want?
