I was thinking about how many things Abercombrie says wrong, but I decided to go with this, inspired by the Bezos meme about a bookstore so evil lol. I like Abercombrie, and I wish he returned in more games, but Qwark was Jim's role; he was an amazing captain.

CO-CO-CO-COMBO BREAKER! Congratulations u/Do0oo00de for getting with Scrunch's sister, but WHERE'S THE PLUMBER?

  • Ratchet and Clank 1: 3
  • Ratchet and Clank 2: 3

Quest for Booty Just finished playing Quest for Booty for the first time

Post image
73 Upvotes

This is a follow-up to my post from yesterday where I had just finished playing Tools of Destruction for the first time, the start of my PS3 Ratchet & Clank journey. As a kid, I only played the PS2-era RaC games before jumping over to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One and sadly missing out on every RaC game from after Deadlocked/Gladiator. Yesterday, I posted about how much I loved Tools of Destruction, and now here I am with my thoughts on it's immediate follow-up: Quest for Booty.

I knew to expect this game to be more of a spin-off than a true sequel to Tools, but I wasn't prepared for how short the game actually was. I started playing around noon and was done in about three hours. I'm not mad about the length, just surprised.

I found the new puzzle solving stuff in this game to be interesting, such as the ways you use the wrench to manipulate the environment (such as setting up the spring trampoline things or pulling down bridges). I admire that a game so short still found a way to add something new to the franchise.

I also loved the three main locations of this game as they all evoked different feelings from me as a player. Hoolefar gave off a lot of Jak and Daxter: the Precursor Legacy vibes, which I love since that's my favorite game outside of this series. Morrow Caverns made me think of games like Fable and Elder Scrolls and I liked the mechanic involving using light to scare off the flying creatures. Darkwater Cove made me think of the Goonies a little bit with it's use of the piano puzzle. Loved all three locations.

I also thought the game was mostly pretty funny, the music was great (sad to hear this was David Bergeaud's last game), and the final boss was actually pretty well-done too, challenging but not unfair.

I did think the game felt a little repetitive at times though, such as the levels that require you to just fight endless waves of undead pirates. Though that was a fun callback to Qwark's vid-comic about Captain Blackstar in Up Your Arsenal, I just thought the level went on a little too long personally and could've ended after the first cannon part. Maybe that's just me though.

Overall, not by any means my favorite game in the series, but it gets enough right to be considered a good one. Better than Size Matters IMO, but not better than any of the others I've played. Fun little game overall. Very excited to check out a Crack in Time :)

Discussion Aside from making playthroughs easy, was the RYNO series also intended to make grinding less tedious especially for Challenge Mode?

Since the RYNO weapons can defeat enemies quickly and often have a large amount of ammo, were they also intended for Challenge Mode to make bolt multipliers much easier?

Merc and Green... I like them, but I wish we had more of them. They were cool characters, but I think it would have been good to have a couple of cutscenes that explained where they came from and who they are. I am glad they give us voice lines throughout the fights, but that's all we get.

We got a good portion of people upvoting the swap, so Starlene and Darla are swapped.

Congratulations u/DawnStrikAr for unplugging the Pumber. That's 4 in a row! Now he may not get a perfect game, but let's see how far he can go!

Tools of Destruction I just finished playing my first PS3 Ratchet & Clank game

Post image
172 Upvotes

In a previous post a couple weeks ago, I mentioned that I had never played any of the games past Deadlocked/Gladiator and asked what to expect from the PS3 era of the series. After carefully considering what all of you had to say, and completing Size Matters in the meantime, I began my playthrough of Tools of Destruction yesterday.

I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it tbh. I knew to expect it to be different tonally, visually and all that, but to my surprise, I absolutely LOVED this game. I expected to only sorta like it, but not as much as the PS2 ones, but I actually would put this above Deadlocked in my personal ranking. Maybe even Going Commando.

I had a total blast with this game, and the cliffhanger ending has me pumped for the next one. I technically should play Secret Agent Clank first but I think I'm gonna skip that one and do Quest for Booty next instead.

But yeah, really liked Tools of Destruction as a PS2-only fan. I think Insomniac nailed bringing the series to the next generation and it makes me wish I'd gotten a PS3 instead of an Xbox 360 in the 2000s.

Low rank fan planning on getting the whole R&C series collection

I have to say that Ratchet and Clank has to be one of the top all time favourite video games series I have played and that is coming from a low ranking fan that has only played 3 games being Rift Apart and the reboot/movie one that came to PS4 and of course Crack in Time.

Thankfully as per a previous post I have managed to grab a few games, and these have been with me for a long number of years, what I am 'stunned' at is that I got these ps3 games Nexus and Quest for Booty for literally 'pennies' when I got them from a trade in store, now they are rather high in value, is there a reason for this, are they the more desired/sought after titles or is it just perhaps lesser prints compared to the other games.

I plan on getting every Ratchet and Clank game in the future, thankfully there is not that many, I just need to go through Wikipedia and find the list of games, I remember ther being one for PSP that I think just had Clank on his own, think he was in a fancy suit kinda like james bond lol

BEFORE WE BEGIN: do you want Darla and Starlene swapped? I will make a comment and if it gets enough upvotes, they will switch.

Now on with the show, Darla is a lovely character. She managed to appear in all 3 Ratchet and Clank games; it would have been insane if she were in Deadlocked, but I am glad she became a recurring character in the series. I wish she would return; I find her absolute-unit hairdo hilarious, and she always delivered her lines so straightforwardly. Comedy always works when you have a straight man, and even though she isn't a man and her hair isn't straight, I found that her straight delivery to be a bite-sized delight in the series.

Congratulations to u/DawnStrikAr for Skrunch's sister, I think thats 3 in a row, a donkey in bowling terms! He may not get a perfect game, but I am interested to see how far he can go!

Replaying the catalog

I'm having a ball since I found all the games on PlayStation Plus. I haven't played through the early games in quite some time. R&C was one of the first games on PS2 that I played for myself. Ico and Kingdom Hearts I started because I saw someone else play them.

I honestly don't remember what turned me on to R&C- none of my friends played it, but I am so glad. Every time I've gotten the next console it has been because of a launch R&C title.

I just finished the first 3 and started to play Deadlocked. I remember why I wasn't a big fan of the title. I didn't mind the story line but playing them back to back and suddenly having the buttons completely remapped was jarring. (Fun fact, for me, I had never heard of a Snickerdoodle until the line, "what kind of cookie would Ratchet be? I'm thinking Snickerdoodle." I had to try one after I learned they were like a cinnamon sugar cookie. I've loved them ever since. Lol)

I've jumped ship after 20 minutes or so. I'm onto Tools of Destruction now. The difference in fidelity and graphics is amazing. His little furry face is so adorable. I remember being impressed with the panning of the audio back in the day. Today it's the graphics. Back to back it's really an impressive progression. I'm curious to see if there will be as big a jump once I hit 2016.

Discussion Retcon Idea: The Lombaxes created the Cragmites. Spoiler

I think there is nothing wrong to say that the story which presented in the Future Saga, in Tools of Destruction, related to Polaris and the Lombaxes especifically was generic and kinda blend for the most part.

Things like the the idealization and treatment of the Lombaxes as heroes devoid of nuance or plot conveniences like the fact that Alister, alone, had the full authority to give Tachyon the full acess to Lombax without any impediment from others members of the Council really give the narrative this feeling. Especially considering that everyone, except Azimuth himself, were wary about about the Cragmite and still no one did a damn to thing to try discover or stop any schemes that he might been doing.

Personally, one things that annoys the most are the treatment that was given to the Cragmites themselves, which were always treated like shallow monstrous conquerors, lacking any story or well-developed motivations. I always thought that the Cragmites always had a great potential of being the great final antagonists of the Ratchet and Clank franchise, given that they were the arch-nemesis of the Lombaxes and have a strong contrast to them, being a militaristic race. But, seeing the path that franchise has been taking, It seems highly unlikely that they will return in a future game, at least not immediately.

Look, it's not like I want to Ratchet and Clank to have a story and lore of the same level of Bioshock or something. I just wish the narrative had been presented in a more interesting and entertaining way, especially considering that the goal of the Future Saga was to deliver a deeper story—particularly when compared to the more cartoonish tone of the PS2 saga.

So, for that reason, I have a retcon proposal for the franchise's future game.

My idea is this: to reveal that the Lombaxes were actually the creators of the Cragmite species and the true culprits behind the Great War in Polaris.

My proposal is that, long before the Great War, Repoor—being a remote and isolated planet—was used and maintained by a faction of the Lombax Council as a secret testing ground for research and experiments that were kept hidden even from much of Fastoon's leadership. There, one of the projects they carried out involved modifying and altering the biology of one of the planet's life forms to create an army of self-replicating monsters, intended for use as a weapon if necessary.

From this research, the Cragmites were born. Originally nothing more than a type of insectoid or larval creature native to Reepor's ecosystem, they were molded into the conquest-hungry beasts we know today—possessing the ability to spawn Cragpoles upon death, a direct result of the project's goal to create a resilient and inexpensive-to-produce force.

However, the Cragmites proved too voracious and autonomous to control. They rebelled, breaking free from their containment and conquering all of Reepor—which would serve as an anchor for the species to spread throughout the Polaris galaxy—later igniting the conflict that would become known as the Great War.

The official Ratchet & Clank wiki describes the Cragmites as an empire that "traveled from galaxy to galaxy, conquering them, draining their resources, and then moving on to the next." However, this doesn't make much sense considering that the Cragmites are depicted as being native to Polaris—specifically, to Reepor.

So what? They left their home planet and galaxy, conquered a bunch of random star systems, only to then return to seize their native territory? That is where the basis for my retcon originates, because this narrative wouldn't be a plot inconsistency, but rather propaganda and a narrative crafted by the Council faction that backed the Cragmite project.

They created this story to dehumanize the Cragmites and prevent the populations of Polaris (including the rest of the Lombax population) from questioning their origins as a species. The Ranger Rumble game itself introduced Widget, a Lombax journalist who played a pivotal role in uniting the Allied Polaris forces against the Great Cragmite Empire.

All of this also serves to explain why the Council adopted Tachyon after finding him on the Kreeli Comet following his species' banishment. It wasn't out of pity or anything of the sort, but rather to recover the project's sole survivor in order to create a new generation of Cragmites—more powerful, controlled, and loyal—using Percival himself as the foundation.

This faction of the Council was also the reason why no one did anything to stop Azimuth from handing over his species' technology to Tachyon, and why there was no attempt to stop the Cragmite himself. It’s because they counted on the attack against Fastoon taking place.

I imagine they developed a desire to relocate the Lombax species to another dimension—especially considering the existence of the outpost on the planet Savali in Rivet's dimension, which indicates that the Lombaxes had begun researching and exploring other universes some time ago. However, what was missing was a reason to convince the Lombaxes to abandon Fastoon and relocate to another reality—something Tachyon handed them on a silver platter when he made his proposal to the Council with clearly dubious intentions.

So, they allowed Alister to hand over his species' technology to Tachyon and let the Cragmite orchestrate their genocide without interference—all to ensure the exodus took place under the guise of an escape route. They even commissioned the mapping of the dimensions under that pretext, concealing the true conspiracy.

To be clear: Tachyon, Alister, and Kaden never knew about this plot. As I mentioned earlier, the whole thing was orchestrated by a part—a faction—of the Council, not the Council as a whole. When Kaden commissioned the mapping project from Mags, it was with the genuine intention of saving his race. Tachyon never discovered the true reason behind his adoption, and his motives for revenge remain the same as those presented in the canon. As for Alister, he handed over the technology on his own initiative; he was never manipulated or anything of the sort.

Tachyon's plan and Alister's naivety were merely two coincidences that aided the faction in its endeavor. They never planned those events themselves.

Now we get to what really matters. The goal of this retcon, beyond dismantling the image of the Lombaxes as infallible heroes, is to create a conflict for the narrative of the next game of the franchise; which most probably will involve the Lombax dimension and also bring back the Cragmites as a bonus.

My idea is that this entire plot was somehow revealed to the public, triggering an extremely violent civil war within the dimension. In an effort to regain control and crush the rebellion, the Lombax faction decided to turn to their most powerful weapon: the new generation of Cragmites created from Tachyon.

Using the beasts, they were able to suppress the rebels and impose total martial law, with Cragmites openly patrolling the streets under their masters' command. Now, the remnants of the revolutionary army remain in hiding, operating as a covert guerrilla resistance, unable to face the Cragmite hordes head-on.

The game's story revolved around Ratchet, Clank, Rivet, and Kit arriving in the dimension and confronting the reality of a place that was not only living through the aftermath of total war but also remained under the authoritarian rule of an oppressive government—one that employed their race's greatest enemies as enforcers. Now, they had to face the reality that much of what they had heard about their own species was nothing more than a lie and a fabricated story.

This is basically my idea and proposal for the story of the franchise's next game, along with a retcon that ties everything together. This was an insanely long post, and honestly, I feel a bit embarrassed about it. However, I think it’s an interesting idea worth sharing, which is why I decided to go through with it.

So, what do you guys think?
