This is a follow-up to my post from yesterday where I had just finished playing Tools of Destruction for the first time, the start of my PS3 Ratchet & Clank journey. As a kid, I only played the PS2-era RaC games before jumping over to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One and sadly missing out on every RaC game from after Deadlocked/Gladiator. Yesterday, I posted about how much I loved Tools of Destruction, and now here I am with my thoughts on it's immediate follow-up: Quest for Booty.
I knew to expect this game to be more of a spin-off than a true sequel to Tools, but I wasn't prepared for how short the game actually was. I started playing around noon and was done in about three hours. I'm not mad about the length, just surprised.
I found the new puzzle solving stuff in this game to be interesting, such as the ways you use the wrench to manipulate the environment (such as setting up the spring trampoline things or pulling down bridges). I admire that a game so short still found a way to add something new to the franchise.
I also loved the three main locations of this game as they all evoked different feelings from me as a player. Hoolefar gave off a lot of Jak and Daxter: the Precursor Legacy vibes, which I love since that's my favorite game outside of this series. Morrow Caverns made me think of games like Fable and Elder Scrolls and I liked the mechanic involving using light to scare off the flying creatures. Darkwater Cove made me think of the Goonies a little bit with it's use of the piano puzzle. Loved all three locations.
I also thought the game was mostly pretty funny, the music was great (sad to hear this was David Bergeaud's last game), and the final boss was actually pretty well-done too, challenging but not unfair.
I did think the game felt a little repetitive at times though, such as the levels that require you to just fight endless waves of undead pirates. Though that was a fun callback to Qwark's vid-comic about Captain Blackstar in Up Your Arsenal, I just thought the level went on a little too long personally and could've ended after the first cannon part. Maybe that's just me though.
Overall, not by any means my favorite game in the series, but it gets enough right to be considered a good one. Better than Size Matters IMO, but not better than any of the others I've played. Fun little game overall. Very excited to check out a Crack in Time :)
