Companies to work for Oregon

Post image
28 Upvotes

Looking for recs for companies to work for in Oregon- I've been looking at Deschutes or Rogue.

I've done 2 years guiding on the Arkansas river Bighorn Sheeps Canyon in CO. I also have my WFR.

Maybe it's a different culture but most of the companies I've seen don't offer housing/camper spot . Is that the norm for this region?

I'm also looking for a company that's female friendly... Toxic male outdoor bro culture is so exhausting.

I appreciate any info! 🌊

Edit- thank you all for the thoughtful comments!

Kayker who fell in love with rafting! How do I find overnight trips to do as a beginner? Google isn't very much help.

I'm in the middle of nowhere North Dakota, and I would love to take a trip for an easy 2-day, 1-night, adventure.

Are there any places down south that aren't booked out for the season? Any good places to check out for a beginner? I'm looking at taking my husband and 2 of our friends for an excursion. We do have plenty of open water experience (I'm a certified diver, lifelong kayaker, etc.) but not specifically rafting. Also, it's been a good decade since I did any whitewater.

Do I need to wait and start looking at different rivers/guides for next summer? Or is there any hope to find something for the fall? We all really need to get away from work and have an exciting (but not quite oh-my-god-im-gonna-die) trip.

Thank you!

Tilt deck trailer

Does anyone use a tilt deck trailer? I am wondering if it would be possible to load my 14' NRS Otter with a fishing frame, by myself if I had a tilt deck trailer with a winch.

Doesn't appear that many of the commercial operators in the GC require helmets? Why?

Tatshenshini rafters — campsite etiquette question

Looking for some perspective from people who have run the Tatshenshini.

This August our group of 5 and 2 guides arrived at the Melt campsite and found another rafting group already established there. It appeared to be a fairly large site with room for both groups and our guides asked the other group if we could share the campsite.

They declined and suggested that we camp on the sandbank next to the river instead. Our guides did not consider it a safe camping option, so we floated downriver well past the confluence till we could find an acceptable place to camp.

I'm curious about the normal etiquette on the Tatshenshini. When a campsite is large enough for two groups, is it generally expected that groups will share when possible, or does the group that arrives first normally have the discretion to keep the site to themselves?

I'd just like to understand whether what happened is considered normal river etiquette particularly when the alternative suggested by the first group wasn't considered a safe camping option by our guides.

Would appreciate perspectives from people with Tatshenshini experience.

Commercial Rafting Companies Grand Canyon

Why are OARS rafting trips +20%-30% higher than the other commercial rafting companies? Is it a function of you get what you pay for or reputation or other?

Zambezi River Rafting - any comps to U.S. rivers?

Planning a once in a lifetime safari trip in 2028 and we love rafting so had to add on that for sure. Zambezi looks pretty amazing but our agent called it "gnarly" and the videos I see are all carnage videos. Has anyone done this river and offer any advice on it? We'd be doing this in late September. For disclosure we call ourselves very experienced rafters - Upper Gauley, Animas, American, Russell Fork, Middle Salmon, Grand Canyon (J rig though) but we're also not looking to do some super technical river where you're just happy to survive and have all your teeth either. Needs to be legit fun. Thanks!

Gates of Lodore in July?

We are debating going on a guided multi-day family rafting trip on the Green River next July, ideally during the first few weeks (work schedule won’t let us go at any other time). Just me, my spouse, and ten year old. Next summer has the potential to be the hottest on record.

I keep thinking about the sun and heat as we have only floated tree shaded streams in the Ozarks. I had heat exhaustion twice as a kid and haven’t forgotten it. Will I be miserable even if I adequately hydrate, wear upf clothing, and take dips in the river? A friend suggested the lower Salmon but with airfare I think it’s out of our budget.

This would be a trip of a lifetime for us. We are thinking of using OARS, Holiday, or Sheri Griffith. Any feedback welcome; we want to have a good time and use an outfitter who treats their guides well.

DO NOT work for tributary whitewater!!!

I WISH there was a post like this around before I worked for this company. I’ve been a raft guide for a few years and worked for a couple of companies, and murked for a few more. Needless to say, I’ve witnessed so many rafting companies operations and none have ever come close to how bad tributary is.

There are the owners: Jeremiah and Eva (married), and then Marc and Zoe (the assistant managers, also a couple)

-Jeremiah and Eva do not give a shit about their employees and do not listen to what you have to say, they are so dismissive

-Zoe is incredibly two faced. You can tell her things in confidence and then you can bet she will go and tell the rest of the raft guides. If you upset her she will give you the silent treatment. She’s an only child and acts like it.

-Marc is the only good thing about this place. He’s reasonable and kind but doesn’t make up for all the other BS

Here are a few things to know:

-they disregard age limits and weight requirements on the river. There have been some young and small children that genuinely could have drowned if a boat flipped. (All for more profit)

-they try to charge $100 (per month) for a campsite (no electricity, bathrooms are a bit of a walk, the kitchen is a 2 mile drive away)

-Jeremiah and Eva (the owners) refuse to put up a Venmo board and scold you if you choose to do a tip talk (they say it’s tacky!)

-I chose this company because it provided an opportunity to work on multiple rivers, and they did not train me for any of it. They don’t teach you any history, what rocks to look out for, rapid names sivs, etc. They basically were like “you have rafted before good luck out there.” (Profit!!!)

-they NEVER wash pfds or helmets. They rinse wetsuits in WATER. It’s disgusting

-they have trip rates set before the season starts, (like south fork being 5 hours pay) and expect things to be done in a timely manner, but never train you on how they want things done and in what order, then would frequently get upset that trips were running over the 5 hours

-they would over book trips. Sometimes we would be given a 10 load of adults. There aren’t even 10 seats in a raft, we’d have to put some people on THE NOSE of the boat

-one employee broke his toe and they were so unhelpful with the workers comp, Jeremiah saying that he “doesn’t know how workers comp works.”

-while also laying off salary employees to pay out of pocket for a former managers SPINAL SURGERY

-when I started the season, everyone was new, maybe one or two returning guides. Said it was just a “high turnover season.” By the end of July more than half of the raft guides I started with had quit because of the BS. (And they were still so rude to the guides that stayed)

-if a trip runs hours over for circumstances out of your control, you are not compensated

-Jeremiah is so anal about things like boats needing to face the same way on the trailer, meanwhile half the boats are missing handles, the PFDs are ratty as hell, the vans are missing front bumpers, and the whole operation is disorganized as hell, he’s got bigger fish to fry for sure

-having the commissary manager working 60+ hours a week, no help, and overworking and underpaying her. They were only nice to her because they needed her to keep the company afloat. When one of her best friends DIED, Eva was talking about how she didn’t leave the day of saying “if that was my sister I’d be gone already” without knowing the circumstances. (She left a few days later for the funeral) They said they would take care of her work and have her back, and have her job for when she got back. While she was there for the funeral, they called and fired her out of the blue because “the walk in was a mess.” They said they would take care of it. And then fired her over it.

-they are only nice to people if it benefits them

Gasket on my dry box seems to be at the end of its life, trying to figure out what material to replace it with, rubber, neoprene closed cell foam, or something else entirely?

Travel Insurance

In light of the flooding on 8/30/2026, it has got me thinking about travel insurance/medical evacuation in conjunction with a whitewater rafting trip in the Grand Canyon. What has your experience been with travel insurance? Worth it? Pros&Cons? Recommendations?
