MOD POST Weekly Career / General Questions Thread
This is the career / general questions thread for the week.
Questions about radiology as a career (both as a medical specialty and radiologic technology), student questions, workplace guidance, and everyday inquiries are welcome here. This thread and this subreddit in general are not the place for medical advice. If you do not have results for your exam, your provider/physician is the best source for information regarding your exam.
Posts of this sort that are posted outside of the weekly thread will continue to be removed.

X-Ray What countries can we work in with an ARRT license? Can we get a megathread with info?
I know these normally get deleted or need to go into the weekly car*er advice thread (censored to avoid auto deletion)
But can we get a megathread going for info on international x-ray work - agencies/licensing/compatibility/ etc ..?
I feel like this would be helpful for a great deal of us Americans right now. I can't seem to find much help elsewhere.

CT Situs Inversus with Levocardia
I'm a 35 y/o male with Situs Inversus with Levocardia. We found this out when I was 10 and had X-rays done for suspected appendicitis. I thought this would be the place that would most appreciate seeing some CTs I had a while back. (I think that's what you can see here. I'm not a radiologist.) I can probably find the drive with the whole scan later if wanted.

Discussion Therapeutic radiographers (if any here) - measurements from tattoos
Hi all,
I am looking to gather information on how other departments utilise previous radiotherapy tattoos when setting up patients for a new CT planning scan (replans or different treatment area) where tattoo measurements already exist. Do you place a skin marker (for example, Beekley crosshairs or a similar product) over the tattoo location to provide a visual reference and facilitate post-scan checks, or do you rely on manual measurements alone? I am exploring whether introducing a visible marker could provide an additional verification step after scanning and help identify any discrepancies that may arise from manual ruler measurements. We currently use ball bearings for our reference marks but we wanted to avoid using a larger ball bearing on the previous tattoo to avoid referencing on the incorrect ones.
I'd be grateful to hear how others manage this process and whether any formal procedures or quality assurance measures are in place.

Discussion Question on scope of practice
A situation came up at my hospital concerning modified barium swallow studies. One of our speech therapists is pregnant and asked a tech to feed the patient the barium mixed with foods and operate the fluoro while they stood behind the control room wall watching on the monitor. Is feeding the patient in these studies inside or outside the scope of practice of the rad tech?

Career or General advice Starting over as a tech again.
I have a year of experience but had to step back from being a tech for about 3/4 years. Man, I feel so dumb again. Feel like I know nothing and it’s taking a bit to get back into the groove. This has been my 2nd day. Been watching videos and revising again. Anyone got any advice? Really want to get good again and have more confidence.

Discussion Old x-ray technique equipment
I was talking to a tech today who started in the late 80s, and she was trying to explain to me what the generators to set techniques were like when she was just starting out. We weren’t able to find any pictures of it, but she described it as a tall machine with a ton of buttons. Does anyone have any resource to look that up, or images yourself? Thanks!

Just wondering if anyone working in MRI has ever used them and if they actually make a difference?

Discussion Which is left or right from anterior view
This is a discussion between me and my father about one of the online questions in the procedures section of mosby's comprehensive review of radiography 8th edition, the vertebrae I believe it’s a vertebrae, anyways I believe it’s facing anterior view which means the right side is on the left side? And the left side is on the right side?, the red is the right answer just so you people know

X-Ray Male coworker SA'd at work
We got to talking today at work about this after recently one of our techs was assaulted and groped by a patient. I know this is a common thing for female techs to experience, but had not realized just how common it is for male techs as well (the tech that was assaulted was male). Hearing other older male techs share their stories was shocking.

Ultrasound polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS/PCOS)
Went in for a scan searching for endometriosis, doctors suspected PCOS/PMOS. Thought I'd share what it might look like on an internal ultrasound for anyone curious. (History of period pain, irregular periods, heavy bleeding, painful periods, ovulation pain, PMDD, fatigue + other) Both ovaries enlarged. The LT OVARY photos werent as clear as the RT when I looked through the photos.

MRI UIH MRI scanner - poor imaging
We have uMR680 and we are finding liver imaging to be poor, although the company says this isn't an issue in other sites. Has anyone else got a UIH MRI scanner at their hospital, any comments on how they are finding it?

Ultrasound Student survey: work-related pain and discomfort among sonographers
Hi everyone,
I am a college senior studying engineering on my capstone design project, we are trying to learn more about the physical side of working as a sonographer: where people experience pain or discomfort, what tasks or exam types make it worse, and how it affects you day to day (with a focus on musculoskeletal disorders).
If you're a current or former sonographer (or a sonography student who has done clinicals), we'd really appreciate it if you took our short survey:
Survey for sonography attachment – Fill out form
- It takes about 5 minutes
- For academic research purposes only, no information is shared publicly
- Responses are used only for the project to help guide and inform decision making
We're not selling anything. We just want to hear directly from the people who do this work every day. If you'd be open to a short follow-up conversation, there's an optional spot at the end of the survey to let us know.
If you have thoughts you'd rather share here, feel free to comment too. Thank you so much for your time, and for everything you do!

Career or General advice Tired of the "just scan it" mentality in Italy, is radiography growth possible in the rest of Europe?
Hey everyone! 👋
I’m a young radiographer working in Italy. Professional pathways here feel super static, and post-grad specialization masters rarely bring any promotions or pay bumps. Honestly, with current salaries here, you're just surviving rather than saving or thriving.
I'm really motivated, love learning, and ready to move elsewhere in Europe to grow professionally. I'm especially interested in MRI, Oncology, Radiotherapy, and research but open to anything, including stepping away from the hospital floor if needed.
For those of you across Europe who managed to excape the basic clinical routine:
Which countries would you recommend? Where is our profession best valued and developed?
What is your current role and path? (Reporting, Dosimetry, Application Specialist, Health Economics, etc.?) Did you need specific university degrees/Master's?
Does your salary allow you to actually live well and save money, or just cover basic expenses?
I’m completely ready to learn the language and put in the work—I just want to invest my time where growth and work are respected.
Would love to hear your experiences and advice! Thanks! ☢️💗

Mammo Mammo registry
How do you guys just study with Lange? I feel like answering questions / just reading the information does nothing for me. I make quizlets and flashcards but I feel like I’m just memorizing answers and don’t feel like I’m actually absorbing the material.
I’ve been trying to use LearnRadiologyWithMy as well but I feel like her info doesn’t always exactly or cover entirely what’s on the ARRT specs. I go through her Q&A videos and feel like they’re too easy.
The workbook type of thing that came with the class my work sent me too has different info as well so I just don’t know which numbers to trust and things like that.
I don’t know what to do, I really want to pass my boards on the first try but I’m not confident.
Kind of a vent, kind of seeking advice if there’s any to be offered.

CT A strange patient
Hello,
Today I met a strange patient who came in for a CT scan of her abdomen with contrast injection. When I did my interrogatory with her, she said there was nothing wrong. After the scan, it turned out she was pregnant. After that, I asked her why she wasn't telling me the truth, she said i was afraid of the evil eye.daaamn

CT CT tech to PET CT tech
Hello,
I’m currently a CT tech at an outpatient prostate cancer center in NJ. They are replacing their CT machine with a PET CT next year. They will have a Nuclear Medicine tech doing the injections and I will learn how to do the PET CT exam part. What I’m uncertain of is how much of a pay increase I should ask for?
Thank you!
