[TS-x51] Mini-Guide: CPU Upgrade on TS-451 to Circumvent LPC Bug

Hi r/qnap, I wanted to share a successful mod on my TS-451. I was able to get my board reballed with an updated Celeron J1900 that doesn't have the dreaded LPC clock bug. This should work for all x51 and x51+ series NAS devices. I've compiled the instructions together with the modded BIOS files on Github here.

Preamble/Story:

TL/DR: If you want to attempt this on your own, I'm providing the necessary files for you to flash your own at the end of the post.

As many of you know the Intel Celerons that were used on the TS-x51 and x51+ series boxes had a hardware LPC bug, where the CPU would progressively become unusable. An initial fix was found by members here and on other QNAP forums where you could circumvent the issue by soldering a 100 ohm resistor to some of the pins on the motherboard, however this was not a permanent fix and either it would flat out not work for some, or the CPU would completely fail after some time.

Well, the incipient hatred I had for QNAP and their lack of fucks to give finally made me take the matters into my own hands. My box hadn't suffered this failure yet as it spent most of its time powered down, but I wanted to run this NAS to the ground and use it for another 7-8 years without any concerns in the back of mind that it might fail at any time.

Guide:

Available on my Github repo.

A TV player at the end of a NAS workflow

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m the developer of Sidstuga, a media player for Android TV, Fire TV and Android phones. If your NAS workflow exposes a library through Plex, Jellyfin, Emby or WebDAV, the app can connect as a separate player.

It also accepts playlists supplied by the user. The source picker can show details before playback, and the player includes audio and subtitle controls. More: https://sidstuga.app/

TS-h1277AXU-RP running QuTS Hero h6.0.2.3591 [Power] The system was not shutdown properly last time.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have two QNAP NAS units in my environment, both TS-h1277AXU-RP models running QuTS hero h6.0.2.3591. Over the past few days, one of the NAS units has been randomly rebooting, and the system logs show the following message after each occurrence:

[Power] The system was not shutdown properly last time.

Interestingly, the same issue started occurring on my other NAS on 6/24/26. It would reboot unexpectedly approximately once a week until the issue eventually stopped on 8/2/26.

I've run S.M.A.R.T. tests on all drives in the NAS and installed memtester to check for potential RAM issues. All tests came back clean, with no errors detected.

I've also reviewed the system activity around the times the unexpected reboots occurred, looking for any scheduled tasks, file transfers, or services that might explain the behavior. However, I couldn't find anything running at those times that would account for the reboots.

This issue seems to have started after installing the first QuTS hero h6.0 firmware release, h6.0.0.3500.

Has anyone else experienced random reboots on their QNAP NAS after upgrading to QuTS hero h6.0? Are there any known firmware-related issues or additional troubleshooting steps I should look into?

Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

QTS/QuTS Hero 6.1 Public Beta

QTS skipped version 6 but now we see a 6.1 version, alongside QuTS Hero 6.1 (which did have a 6.0 GA release). The new 6.1 is in Public Beta which probably means that we won't see a GA release until next spring but at least its been dropped for folks to try.

This is clearly the AI release since nearly all of the features are around AI (there are some interface tweaks including the adding of widgets and getting the Linux kernel to v6.6). The particular feature that intriques me is the AI Service Center, which brings all your hardware AI capabilities into one place and allows you to define frontier cloud providers to use for certain tasks (and even guesstimate how much you are using for said services). The example that was given was showing that you could have the system manage the AI capabilities of a AMD EPYC processor, an Intel ARC A770 card and a Nvidia RTX PRO 4500 card all in the same machine while showing what LLMs were available and which apps that the LLMs and the hardware were going to use ("App Routing"?). And in the release notes, it seemed like there was support for Open AI compatible servers which means you could, in theory, bring other local AI servers to work for the NAS.

Of course, there's a lot more that is unknown. Right now, if you want to use AI inn your NAS with a discreet GPU, you have to choose whether or not you are dedicated the GPU to the QPKG apps, Virtualization Station or Container Station....you can't choose multiple end points. It would be great if they could solve this somehow.

Unofficial Android app to monitor and manage QNAP NAS

Hi all,

I own a TS-251D and got tired of opening the QTS web UI on my phone just to check CPU, temps or whether a container was still running, so I built an Android app for it: NAS Manager.

Full disclosure: I'm the developer, it's a solo side project, and it's not affiliated with QNAP.

Free to download and use for monitoring:

- System overview

- File Station

- Download Station

- Container Station: applications, containers, images, volumes, logs

- Firewall, Malware Remover, Antivirus

- Resource Monitor, Log Center

Making changes from the phone (e.g. managing containers, transferring files, changing settings) is part of an optional subscription, but everything above is free.

The app talks directly to your NAS over HTTPS.

I'd really appreciate feedback, especially bugs on models/firmware other than mine (QTS 5.2)

Thanks!

TS-873a - Both SSDs disconnected

Recently discovered that both SSDs in my TS-873a were reported as disconnected in QTS Hero. SSDs were configured for Raid1. Looking through logs, it seems the OS disabled them because of an 'unknown' error, no further detail.

Right now, shares on the 8 HDDs I have in it are working fine. Most apps in the admin UI won't start as apparently the volume on the SSD was used as the 'system' drive, so apps got installed there.

I guess I need to power down and reseat the SSDs. What I'm concerned about is if that doesn't resolve the issue? Will I be able to boot again without the SSDs connected? If the SSDs are both somehow dead, can I put two new ones in and have the OS rebuild the system install? My data from that volume was backed up, so not worried about that.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Frigate on QNAP

I anyone running Frigate in Container Station on a QNAP TS-x64 or similar? Any issues running it on that class machine or does it something like a mini PC for the Frigate compute end and use the QNAP as storage. I would prefer to avoid the extra complexity of running another little server.

Questions regarding QNAP backup to Synology using HBS3

Hey everyone,

I have a TS873 (QTS) and I want to re-do my raid group configuration on my QNAP. I was able to a small Synology unit so I can use HBS3 and backup my data to the Synology but I've got a few questions about this process.

I think I setup RSYNC properly between the QNAP and Synology because the test Sync job completed (1-way).

I'm not clear on how I would recover/restore my dad from the Synology back to QNAP once I redo my volume.

Initially I thought I would be doing a HBS 3 backup job but a new backup doesn't give me the option as RSYNC for destination. Only Local and Remote NAS. I've tried remote NAS and it doesn't work, so I suspect that may only work from QNAP to QNAP systems?

I was initially hoping I could plug the Synology into the NAS and have it detected as some kind of removable storage but that didn't work.

Is this the best way to backup/restore my data between both vendors?

Thank you

Need help in restoration of TS-453a

I have an old TS-453a that has all of my pre-addiction data that's sat untouched for over 7-8 years i think, and have no idea how to approach getting it running again with the data intact. It's recognized by qfinder when booting without the discs but wont boot with the discs, assuming it's some partition error and dont really know how to approach it from here. I see conflicting advice, ranging from reinstall the newest firmware to roll back to original firmware to running some usb tools and a variety of things in between

can anyone recomend an approach or link a tutorial or something? any input is appreciatted

I need help to identify space being used up in my system pool

Post image
5 Upvotes

It says I have over 254 GB of installed apps, but when I check the Installed Apps tab the apps do not add up to 254 GB. I don't know how to identify what is causing the huge consumption in space.

My system pool setup: 1 TB NVME and 500 GB NVME in RAID 1 (I plan to upgrade the 500 GB to 1 TB at some point)

Before I decide to reinitialize my NAS to use only the 1 TB NVME for system pool, can anyone help me troubleshoot what might be causing the 254 GB of installed apps?

I currently have 2 VMs on the system pool that add up to 95 GB but this shouldn't matter because the virtual disks aren't growing. I have no other shared folders on the system pool that would be using up more space.

I've had to disable snapshots and reduce ZFS Provisioning and pool over provisioning after running out of space multiple times. There is an unknown data growing.

Has anyone experienced this kind of issue?

Qsync Pro on Android - how do I keep actual local copies of NAS files for offline use?

I have a QNAP NAS and a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite running Android, with Qsync Pro installed. I’ve set up paired folders to transfer files between the NAS and the tablet.

The tablet-to-NAS direction is working correctly. My problem is getting files from the NAS onto the tablet so that I can use them remotely without an internet connection.

While connected to my LAN Wi-Fi, I can browse the NAS folders and see and open the files. However, when I leave the LAN and have no Wi-Fi or mobile data connection, I can see some filenames on the tablet but cannot open the corresponding files. Other files do open offline, although I’m not certain that they are the latest versions.

My suspicion is that I’m seeing the NAS directory listing, or that some files have been cached locally when opened, rather than all the files being downloaded and kept synchronised. I haven’t established whether that is actually what’s happening.

What I want is straightforward:

* A complete, genuine local copy of a specified NAS folder on the tablet.

* New files and changes on the NAS automatically downloaded to the tablet when it is connected to the network.

* Updated files to replace their previous local versions, without me having to open each file individually.

* All files to remain accessible through Samsung My Files when the tablet is completely offline.

I also have remote access to the NAS configured through myQNAPcloud/CloudLink, but that doesn’t help when I’m somewhere with no mobile signal.

Can Qsync Pro do this with a one-way NAS-to-device paired folder, or is there another setting I need to enable to ensure that files are genuinely stored locally rather than being accessed on demand?

If this is possible, could someone explain how to configure it and verify that the files are actually downloaded and kept up to date?

Thanks

Correction... this is a rescue build... the unit has been used for many years, is in a bad way. and in need of some serious help.

Disassembly is going ok, have never seen so much dirt inside a QNAP. Everything must come apart. Even the ethernet ports are packed in dirt. It's at this point i decide to completely overhaul the chassis and all components. Save what i can, update where possible, replace if needed.

I am really fortunate to have a RAM kit to boost capacity. But finding used i7 4970T or 4970S CPU'S is almost impossible for my tiny $50 budget. So if anyone knows of any kind person with a deloaded 4790 T or S please send them my way.

Part way through cleaning the exterior chassis covers and it already looks a little more like itself. Now just have to hope the main board covered in dirt will work after cleaned. Any safe cleaning method suggestions?

Thanks for reading.

Data organization tools for QNAP

Hello everyone,

Having moved data around over the past 5-10 years has led me to have a bit of a mess on my QNAP.

Duplicate folder, files. Media files burried deep within shares, in wrong locations.

I've started to try to organize it using file station but it's been taking a considerable amount of time.

I was wondering if the community has recommended qnap store apps or 3rd party that can help identify, locate and organize data.

I'm not looking to automate this as I don't want to take chances of important data that will be deleted so I'm fine verifying everything as much as i can.

The biggest challenge is locating duplicate files in network shares and locating various file types in the various shares.

What do you use/do to keep a tidy NAS file structure? What apps/tools/features do you utilize to help you keep a clean and organized house?

Thank you!

Separate Quotas for Shared Folders on a QNAP NAS

it possible to configure separate storage quotas on a QNAP NAS?
We have two different shared folders on the same QNAP NAS:
Shared Folder 1: Fileserver
Configuration: Shared Snapshot Folder
Shared Folder 2: Home
Configuration: Home Folder feature enabled, using Thick Volume
We have integrated our Active Directory (AD) domain and would like to assign individual storage quotas to each domain user, but only for the Home shared folder.
However, when we configure quotas, they also apply to the Fileserver shared folder.
Is there a way to configure quotas exclusively for the Home shared folder on a per-domain-user basis, without affecting the Fileserver shared folder?

QNAP 253B red flashing light of death

My 253B decided to die this week, with a red flashing light the only sign of life at boot. When this happened before, I was able to re-flash the firmware with my TL866II and an SOIC8 adapter, but the same trick unfortunately didn't work this time.

Having failed twice, I don't think I can rely on it and so I've acquired a TS464 as a replacement. The obvious next step is that it could be LPC degradation, but a.) it's a bit unclear as to whether it's impacted by this issue (I haven't found anyone online repair a 253B), and b.) it's not clear if it's as simple as soldering a 100 ohm resistor to the board (also - this assumes that this is actually the failure). Has anyone successfully repaired a 253B? Thanks!

Plex wont boot after changing drives

Hi Guys, the drive on my nas (QNAP TS-464) had started to fail with bad sectors, it was within warranty thankfully and a replacement got sent to me, after migrating plex and all the data to the new drive, I tried to pull the faulty, read only drive yet when I try to boot plex it cannot find the server. When I plug the faulty drive back in, it can detect the server and play as normal. If possible can someone here help point me in the direction of what I need to do to fix this, if more information is needed please let me know, thank you in advance

macOS users unable to access QNAP SMB shared folder

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, hope you're doing fine.

For the past few weeks, my Apple users have been unable to connect to a shared folder on a QNAP NAS. Users working on Windows PCs have no issues accessing the same folder.

When i log in with the same user (it's a domain user) on a windows PC, I have no issues accessing the share. I've also tested this with multiple macOS version (13, 26 and 27), and they all have the same issue.

The NAS in question is:

TS-H1886XU-RP R2 with Firmware-Version: QuTS hero h5.2.4.3079

I always get the following error: There was a problem connecting to the server "Name or IP from NAS". I have tried connecting using both FQDN and IP address, same issue. Ping works using both the hostname and IP.

When I try to mount the share using the QNAP Qfinder Pro app, it detects the NAS, but I'm unable to mount the shared folder getting the same error (error in screenshot).

When I connect to:

smb://ad.domain.com/share

I can see all the shared folders that the user has access to, including the problematic one. When i open other shared folders that are located on our file server, I have no issues. However, when i try to open the one located on NAS, it loads for some time and it opens but it's empty.

The same share works fine on an iPad running iOS 26.5.

I have also tried connecting to a shared folder that's on another QNAP NAS and it works without any issues. The NAS is: TS-459U+ with Firmware-Version 4.2.6

One thing I noticed is that this issues appeared around the time we updated some of the apps in the App center. One of the updated apps was SMB Service, which is currently running version: h4.15.008

Has anyone else experienced the same issue? Is there a known solution or any specific SMB settings i should change on QNAP or macOS side?

Any help would be appreciated.

10TB drives with TS-219P II

Hi all,

I have bought an older TS-219P II system with pre-installed 2x 1TB drives in RAID1 array.

I am looking for ways to expand up to 10TB in RAID1.
On the official site, I have found, that this model can take up to 10TB with specific drives listed.

Now I am looking all around the web for this specific drives which led me to a conclusion, that these drives are older and are not sold on many sites. These models were suggested on the official QNAP website:
ST10000VN0008
ST10000VN0004
ST10000VN0014

Will only these models work on the 219P II or will other 10TB drives work as well?

If I'm correct, the drives should be CMR and SATAIII?

My goal is to install two 10TB drives in a RAID1 array. Now I am struggling to find compatible 10TB drives.

Any help and suggestions are appreciated!

Tranciever compatibility of QNAP switches?

I am planning to buy a QSW-M7230P-2X4F24T-US switch and it will be my first QNAP device.
When I am browsing Amazon for 100g transceivers I see the usual firmwares: Intel, Cisco, Mellanox, etc but I cannot see Qnap.

What transceiver modules are compatible with Qnap switches?

Cannot connect to QNAP

Hi all…. I really need some help as I’ve tackled all the basics and I’m not getting anywhere…

I have a TS-464 at home that has been happily running for around a year.

It had a power cut at the weekend, and I took the opportunity to try and relocate it in the home. However, since then I’ve been unable to connect.

First of all, boot up and LEDs all indicate no issue. Long beep on start up, green ‘I’ icon orange network icon, green lights for installed disks.

Connection at start was via Ethernet, but I’ve also tried connecting to the router direct and to a pc directly.

Qfinder pro is not finding it on any of these.

In the router I’ve set it to have a static ip (137), but nothing is working even with direct IP connection.

Without qfinder and without a direct ip login I’m at a loss on how to progress 🙁

A lot of data that I need is on those disks and I don’t think now these have been formatted to qnap standard that I could put them back in my old d link nas enclosure….

Any ideas or suggestions on how I might move forward?

Gratefully yours….

Update:

So the best option was to remove all drives and start the device up.

One of the disks is degraded - tbc if recoverable as I’m awaiting qnap support.

But if I remove that disk (which was backed up) I restored the other two disks I have and I’m up and running. I just have no backup at the moment.

Hopefully this helps anyone else with a similar situation
